Seriously one of my favorite scenes in the history of games. The fact that "Eyes on Me" is actually canon in the world is such a unique twist on a main theme. Really incredible.
I only played a little of the first disk for FF8. OMG, I didn't know that the song Eyes On Me was by Julia for Laguna. Now the lyrics finally make sense. I always thought it was Squall and Rinoa's song.
That's actually the point. The writers made it Julia's song for Laguna and used it as Squall and Rinoa's theme, as a juxtaposition to draw attention to their similarities and connections.
I don't think it's sad. They ultimately only knew each other for a single night and it was superficial at best. From all implications, Fury Caraway and Julia had a far deeper relationship just like Laguna and Raine did. Sometimes, you have an intense but brief flame with someone and move on, but wonder what could have been.
Beautiful music for time immemorial. I've always wrestled with the question of which FF game is my favorite but finally settled on VIII after realizing that the love that never blossomed between Laguna and Julia was able to come to fruition and flourish vicariously through their respective offspring, Squall and Rinoa. That is some well written and weaved story for you.
I finished disc 1 when I was a kid after sooo much grinding and getting stuck and lost in the game I finally got to disc 2 and it didn’t work the disc was to scratched lol just started playing the remastered version now and I’m loving it ff7 8 9 and x are some of the greatest games ever made
This is the game that got me into Final Fantasy before I ever knew about other Final Fantasy game. I remember playing this game so many time but every time end up to Disc-3 either my disc is scratched or my memory card is corrupt LOL. But I still keep playing it cuz' I was hook. The ring is the same as Rinoa has on her neck before getting the one from Squall. I read that this ring was his mother's and in the menu's database and for the memories of Laguna in Winhill it is known that Julia was Rinoa's mother and that she married General Caraway (Rinoa's father). At first I thought that Rinoa's ring was Julia's wedding ring, but it may not be true since Rinoa and her father have a bad relationship and she does not want to know anything about her father and to keep something that Although it belonged to his mother, his father was the one who bought it in the beginning ?. My theory is this, maybe it seems crazy, but it's what always crossed my mind, maybe the ring was always with Laguna (assuming Julia gave it to her) when she fell into the void, when she ran aground almost dead in Winhill. I keep the ring to remember Julia, but when I started to like Raine and know that Julia was already married I would have kept it secret but without throwing it away because of the sentimental value I had, as well as her feelings for Julia. When recovering, it is known that Laguna and Raine began to leave together, and they even got married and after this Laguna left to fulfill his dream of being a journalist, it could be that in that exit Laguna would like to clarify things with Julia and finally finish everything with her, remember that she does not know that he is alive and he never let her know either because he had spent a lot of time and thought that she no longer loved him or maybe because he was already liking someone else and wanted leaving things like that or maybe it was just plain cowardice or shame she and the life she was initiating with General Caraway. My theory leads me to think that she traveled to Galbadia and saw her again in one of her concerts this time as a singer and there she would listen to the song for the first time. "Eyes on me" that is supposed to be the song that took her to the top as a singer and the time would be the song that she would dedicate to him as shown in the first memory of Laguna. Once the concert concluded Laguna would finally talk to Julia about the past would explain everything, also tell him that he had already married another woman and finally apologize by returning the ring. For her part, Julia would be happy to see him alive, since he never forgot it but his heart would break once more when he saw his reality with him and he would say goodbye to Laguna with a smile and tears in his eyes receiving the ring again. It would be the last time they would see each other. A year would pass and Julia would treasure the ring proof that she only loves herself once in her life, which would bring her problems with her husband, she would have Rinoa in that period and on her fifth birthday Julia and her husband Fury would have a discussion for this same question. Julia not resisting so much pressure would escape from home to forget everything not before saying goodbye to her daughter who would leave her ring to take care of it and remember it, Rinoa being very small would not understand anything would only know that it is a very important treasure for his mother and now she had to take care of him. Julia would pack and leave without hearing the insults and humiliations from her husband for being in love with another, ride in his car and drive with his head throws a bundle, thinking about what he left, his daughter and the man who I loved that I would not see the red light and a car would strike her killing her instantly. Rinoa who loves her mother deeply but with little reasoning for her age would listen to the discussion and in the end it would result in her blaming her father for the death of her mother and the ties between father and daughter would be cut. In the end Fury shattered and feeling guilty would plunge into depression and bitterness would emerge as a military man but as a father he would fail, he would end up raising Rinoa alone but never again would his relationship be more and more distancing himself, in the end a teenage Rinoa tired of living with his father would decide to leave on his own and enter the timber resistance and Fury would not know anything about it for a while. On the other hand Laguna would not know anything of this since it is known thanks to Selphie and its obsession with the one, that before entering the resistance against the witch Adel he wrote several articles I travel a little and I even work in movies, but the news later or early would touch his hands to see the article in the newspaper (same article we read in the database of the game menu about Julia and his car accident) this would make him feel confused and even guilty and always wonder if things they would have been different if he had been by her side, in the end he would feel sorry and he would bury his memories with her in the depths of his heart to remember that although he did not last long, he had a beautiful love story and would continue with his life. Thirteen years later, Laguna would meet her daughter and see the ring again but she would not have the courage or the moral to tell her about Julia or her past. The guilt would not leave her, however she would be happy for Squall and Rinoa because through them she would see what could never be with Julia and that her love never died was only inherited to her children. However Squall sooner or later if he would know the truth of everything thanks to the memories that Eleone showed him. I know it's crazy but every time I see that scene and it seems to me that Julia puts the ring I imagine what the fate of the happy ring is and the image of the mysterious ring that Rinoa takes care of with so much zeal comes to mind. this is one of those scenes. where you just stare with awe. as the true love flys through your screen to your heart. this is one of the reasons why ff8 is my faveorite Final Fantasy. and i'm not trying to pick a fight here. you FF7 fans say you dont get ff8 at all and think its trash. This is what its about. LOVE and REALITY. you guys hate it because. it barely has any mythical and mystical bullshit in it and it not like the others its different for the better.
After the whole Esthar thing happened, Laguna was essentially stuck there leading the revolution that he inadvetadly started when trying to go and save Ellone. Ellone was sent back to winhill- where she witnessed the fact that Raine was pregnant, however, before Laguna could get back Raine died and both Ellone and the very young Squall were sent to the orphanage. The whole point of the time jumps is that Ellone wanted to try and change history to make Laguna come back and see Raine/meet his child before she died. But not only did she fail in changing history- but in doing so learnt just how much Laguna cared, and how what happened was not something which she could do anything about.
The fact that julia and laguna never end up together but their kids do kinda makes me wonder about the road not travelled but then again what will it matter??? Who knows… its still a good day to be alive….
fair point, im sure i read somewere that squall and rinoa were somehouw related but that obviously false. julia was actually given a maiden name which is the same as rinoas so that makes it obvious that rinoas mother is julia, with regards to sqalls name it does make sense that he could have taken it from his mother as her name isnt mantioned in the game.
I don’t know why this game got a bad rap, the story was good, the Music was superb, and was just fun to play. I enjoyed the junction system... I also really liked Squall...a relatable character when you’re in high school playing this like I was. I love his thoughts during the past events he is reliving haha...he is so cynical.
ff8 is my favourite ff ! But to me disc 3 loses it and it goes south from there. In the two first CD's you have all this love story and drama that is blooming but you also have all this political / military aspect that gives a really nice and exciting context to the story. In disc 3 it feels like the whole world becomes secondary (of course because the story is told from squall perspective) but a bit more developement would have been enjoyable. For exemple I would have loved to have an arc where you see how seifer seizes power in galbadia and stuff like this while Fujin and Raijin start having their doubts, etc... I can understand why some people didn't like the cheesy love story.

@@hervederinel262 nah, the problem with ff7 was they got too much of expanded lore and spin-offs that made it confusing for the remake because they needed to tie them all together. I'm glad ff8 was able to wrap it all up but it could definitely benefit if they explain more on the Sorceresses like Ultimecia, Adel and the Great Hyne as a back story and streamlined the junction system and not make it easy to exploit

I've noticed something here. There are a couple of versions of this. One is where Laguna falls asleep on the bed, and another where the screen fades out and he is talking too much. Does anyone know the difference in the 2 scenes and what variables makes that happen??
one thing i dont understand is how - if squall is (theoretically) meant 2 b the son of laguna and julia - wud squall get the name lionheart?? he couldnt av got it frm his foster parents coz he didnt have any so thats got me confused. but i have heard from ppl that the storyline of the game (a majority of it being gud) wa quite shoddy. and also rinoa is carraway and julias daughter wich wud make squall n rinoa half related . . . straaaaaaange but great game all the same :)
Okay, this comment limit is too small to explain everything, but let me say one thing: It has been confirmed by Square themselves that Laguna and Raine (not Julia!) are Squall's parents. It's heavily hinted in the game. Also, Rinoa's parents are Caraway and Julia, NOT Laguna and Julia. They say this in the game. Rinoa and Squall are not related in any way. When you think about it, Julia and Laguna barely knew each other, really. I mean, they talked for like, one night, and that was it. xD
That would be Laguna and RAINE. If Squall was the son of Laguna and Julia that would make him and Rinoa half-siblings which would be kind of gross. Additionally, the name is Leonhart. Lionheart is his limit break. Remember that Raine was never given a maiden name, nor was Julia so you COULD assume, respectively, that they may have taken their names from their mothers. Or maybe they simply chose them themselves.
More like Rinoa would never have been born. Also if he had come back, he never woulda met Raine and married her, which would mean no Squall, and therefore, no FF8 =/

That would be Laguna and RAINE. If Squall was the son of Laguna and Julia that would make him and Rinoa half-siblings which would be kind of gross. Additionally, the name is Leonhart. Lionheart is his limit break. Remember that Raine was never given a maiden name, nor was Julia so you COULD assume, respectively, that they may have taken their names from their mothers. Or maybe they simply chose them themselves.

More like Rinoa would never have been born. Also if he had come back, he never woulda met Raine and married her, which would mean no Squall, and therefore, no FF8 =/
