I wish that more people could have Rinoa's relaxed attitude towards shy people. A lot of people show some sort of stiff disapproval towards shy people, which just makes the shy person even more insecure, instead of just having an reaction like "yeah okay you are the shy type, got it, no big deal" and lightening up the mood.
Hes tries to push her away and shut down the conversation several times but she keeps it going really well. At first I thought maybe she was being sarcastic about him being a good listener, but then I realized he actually was intently thinking about what she said the entire time he was silent.
I actually don't find Rinoa or Quistis for the matter, to be good around shy people. I used to be a shy person myself. I had people who behaved the same way as Rinoa and Quistis do with Squall. I didn't like the way they always complained I am not talking to them. I wished they'd leave me alone and stop complaining to me to change myself to become a person they want me to become. I want to be myself and I wished people were more accepting of me. One thing I'd tell, shy people don't like people complaining to them about their personality. Shy people are not always depressed or troubled people. They generally feel anxiety at the beginning when they are with new people but gradually they grow and become more relaxed. People should just be patient and let them be. That helps more than telling them to change or open up and complain about their worries. Again, not all shy people are depressed or having troubles that is making them be shy. They just feel anxiety but it goes away on its own. So just be patient around them. It fixes on its own. Now Squall, I wouldn't say he was timid. He wasn't shy in the way that he felt anxiety. He just like to keep to himself. He's something of a reserved, cautious and logical person. He didn't like to complain and exaggerate or dramatize a situation than what it was. And I get the feeling that people complaining to him and trying to change him made Squall want to ignore and avoid forming relationships. You wouldn't like to be friends with people who do not accept you and always complain about your personality. One thing I noticed is that the characters have a problem with Squall being 'cool' and how he doesn't complains. Squall is the type of person who'd rather spend his time focusing on doing what he needs to do rather than complain and have people sympathise with him. For some reason, all of his friends want him to complain about anything that is troubling him. I don't know why. I think they wanted Squall to be talkative. I think they thought Squall had difficulty expressing himself. I don't think he had difficulty in expressing himself. He would express his mind when necessary. He just keeps his thoughts and opinions to himself and wouldn't express them until it is necessary. That's the kind of person he was. I think people around him misunderstood his personality.

Squall is a powerful gust of wind, his name is meant to be opposite of Laguna, who is calm like the summer breeze (despite being extroverted). Squall's actual personality is anything BUT calm. And he wants someone to let him open up a bit. Some guys are like that, they NEED a girl to basically grab their hand and force them to do what he'd loved to but is too shy to admit. The dance scene is their relationship in microcosm. He WANTS to dance, and he likes it, he just will never make the first move and will resist being forced, until he finally gives in... Really the start of the story is Rinoa being a kind of a Manic Pixie Dream Girl helping an introverted guy come out of his shell, think movies like Chungking Express, Roman Holiday, Fifth Element or Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. He (poorly) pretends he hates the attention from the crazy girl teasing him. He doesn't. He loves it. He is just too shy to admit it. Squall isn't the person he's pretending to be. Not the stoic serious commander with no feelings, he's very sensitive and easy to hurt, also afraid of rejection... so he rejects people on his own, his logic is "if I tell them to leave me _they_ will not tell me to go away". He is so afraid of loneliness he decides to be alone... It's a classic brooding hero archetype in a lot of romantic movies actually. BTW, they did the same with Cloud and Aerith relationship dynamic, except they don't end up together.

It was only on Disc 2 do we see Rinoa doing what you said - trying to get a quiet guy out of his shell. An example is when Squall gave her a tour in Balamb Garden. Squall only became the type of guy you mentioned - the introvert guy who wants to be an extrovert but can't do it himself - on Disc 3. This is more evident when he's in Ragnarok with Rinoa. The rest of the time Squall was the serious, calm type like I mentioned. Though I suppose there were a few instances when he was the type having difficulty to get out of his shell on Disc 2. Particularly when Rinoa was trying to open him up.

It's so cringey, but it's just like real life, when your friends come up with weird-ass ideas to try to hook you up with the boy/girl you like. I like that.
The conversation they have actually has a better outcome if you choose this song. Also this song's flute is a lot less ear-piercing in the PSX version lol.
God bless you for finding this scene! This is one of my favorite scenes. To me, it's a reminder of how we should appreciate the things we tend to take for granted. When our friends come together, even if it's just a small impromptu concert or a walk under the stars, it's a time to enjoy camaraderie. When you have a chance to dance to your heart's content, to open up your heart to someone you've fallen for, to tease and talk with those important to you, these experiences are precious and beautiful. I think that's what Final Fantasy is about. Regardless of whether war is upon us or the world as we know it is careening towards utter chaos and destruction. All that really matters is how we take the time to appreciate the beauty of the world, bringing people together regardless of our differences, allowing ourselves to be wild and carefree, and falling in love without letting fear and doubt stop us.

Eventually I found the PS1 version at a game shop and picked it up (even buying a PS1 memory card just for it to run on my PS2). I can certainly see the appeal of both the series and characters. Rinoa and Squall go so well in this. Scenes like this more than prove it was worth every penny.
One thing I really appreciated about this game is that we know what Squall is thinking through dialog boxes. It sounds simple, but few games since have done something similar. We know what our protagonist is thinking only if they say it or if the facial animations manage to avoid the uncanny valley. Part of the reason FFVIII does this is due to technological limitations to be sure, however, this offers a level of insight into the character that we rarely get in many modern RPGs. FFVIII's translation is a sight better than FFVII's, but it still needs some work (Squall comes off as more as a jerk than what was probably intended, and there are a few other oddities that creep up). This is just one example of just how ambitious this game was. It floundered in some aspects, but instead of redoing what its predecessor did (which essentially redid what FFVI did before it), the developers went all out making something unique, and the publisher let them do it. If there is any FF I'd love to see get a proper reboot, it's this one. I love FFVII, but it's done to death, and most of the offshoot games and other media were dogshit.
One of fails in translation is Rinoa comes off as less cute and childish, many in the West HATED her guts because she's pushy, but in Japanese she's more cutesy while doing it (so more non-threatening for shy guys).

For the time it was known for it's groundbreaking graphics and the characters/environment had been fully fleshed out. Plus the gameplay had changed from 4 Party Memebers to 3 and the feature of Limit Breaks, Materia, and Equipment made it stand out from Ff1 to 6.
