I agree, I was 11 when my younger sister was born, and helping “raise” her, is still one of my fondest memories of my time at home. 50 years later, we are still very close.
I am so glad I found your channel. This is my first year homeschool my five kids, all elementary school age. Most of the time I am fine and I truly believe this is the right choice for us. But occasionally I have a small panic attack and think “ what if this was a horrible idea and I am somehow ruining their lives!!!” Lol, so thank you for the encouragement.
I realized we hadn’t been as consistent as we probably should have been recently, so I spent this weekend looking through curriculums we have, looking into new versions/brands/options and it’s been helpful. I also laid down a new schedule, made sure our zoo memberships were in place & found some work we can do that revolves around animals/nature so we can get outside more often. ❤
I was homeschooled straight through and I’m homeschooling our four kids ; oldest in 6th grade. We had to make multiple curriculum changes this January; totally agree don’t be afraid to ditch curriculum that isn’t working!
Yes! Thank you for this video and thank you for bringing up growing up feeling dumb because you didn't fit into the typical education model growing up. I grew up feeling dumb because I was dyslexic. I was always in advanced classes and scored in the top percentiles for standardized testing, but I never understood what I was taught how I was taught it. I had to figure it out my own way. I am now raising a high functioning on-spectrum son and teachers usually have a very hard time figuring out how to teach him. We're transitioning him into home school and currently trying to figure out the best curriculum for him. This is also a major reason I plan on homeschooling my daughter.
Hey I worked with all kinds of dyslexic kids and you might want to check out arts based learning for your kids. I have taught art to ASD students and they pretty much were about 3 years ahead of their peers. Not even exaggerating.
I can’t tell you the number of times I looked up local Montessori schools and saw the $10,000 a year price tag and thought, “Hmm, maybe I can keep going after all.” 😂
I don't know if you'd be remotely comfortable addressing this but i was curious if you'd consider talking about how to adapt homeschooling curriculum for special needs children 💕 I've struggled to find anyone who has addressed this but I know I'm not the only one struggling to adapt materials to a child who learns differently. *or if you could point out some resources that might be helpful
After reading your comment, I wondered if you have looked at the channel Living with Eve? Leilani on that channel has a young daughter with Down Syndrome and talks quite a bit about homeschooling special needs.
First year in our homeschooling and Angie you hit all the spots for me. I am already feel like quitting not because of my children but because I make it too perfect everyday for our homeschooling and it’s not possible. I just need to simplify, do the important things and have fun. ❤
You have always been such an inspiration to me! Always posting exactly what I need to hear, even if I didn’t know I needed to hear it. Thank you for all that you do for this community❤ you don’t realize how many lives you touch with the simplest of words!
Good advise...the beauty of homeschooling is time for kids to cultivate their interests. Have fun! It goes fast! Mine in college now! Miss those homeschooling years! 🥰
Thank you for the reminder that we don't have to cover everything. I really needed to hear that if the curriculum doesn't work, look for something else.
These are great reminders! My 5 year old son didn’t want to do his school which was unusual for him because he loves to learn. I couldn’t figure it out. I started telling him that the sooner he finished school, the sooner he could play. I then explained to him that I challenge myself everyday to get things done and try to beat a time. It clicked! I told him we would set a timer just like Super Mario has to finish a course with a time limit and he said I can do that too! As soon as I started the timer, he got super excited and started working on his math problems. You’re so right about having fun with school. We as adults forget to do that. I just remembered your video when you dressed up for poetry and tea time. That was so creative😄 Thanks again!
Thanks I'll Homeschooling my possible future six children someday ♥ Thank you for this I'll make my possible future six children to make Friends in their extracurricular activities and they will be Homeschooling in K-12 before they started college
I received so much encouragement from you Angela. May the Lord Jesus bless your family and life. I am following you from Romania. May the Lord bless you.
Morning beautiful ❤ It was so weird-I got a notification for this video and when I clicked on it , it said the video was private?? Now it’s working so not sure what happened but thought I’d tell you in case you didn’t know Have a wonderful day
Sorry if this is a stupid question but I'm British - what does Language Arts encompass? We don't have that subject here. We just have 'English' which is reading, creative writing, grammar, spelling, literature etc.
Nice tips. Some of these I learned and didn't know(years ago) in teaching my son who is now an adult, Some I'm putting into practice with my two little ones now. The way I taught my 1st grader in Preschool, I have to do things differently for my current Preschooler and it's going great. This really motivates me and encourages me that I'm doing an acceptable job. Thanks for always sharing.👍🏽❤
Angie, I have to thank you! I’m not homeschooling yet, but I am tutoring high school students, and am using the Learn Math Fast System with one, and wow, it is so helpful! We’ve gone through 2 books in 6 months and her confidence has grown so much. Mine too 😂 Thank you!
Check out Read Aloud Revival! We’ve also started listening to books that have movies that go with them - it’s been a motivator to get my crew through listening!
You know Angela, a lot of your tips are useful for life in general aside from homeschooling. Question; Will you be unsung your This Gathered Nest RUclips channel anymore? I subscribed ages ago and noticed it’s stagnant. Thank you
I believe that you probably would need to Google your local laws for homeschooling, but other than making sure you're following local guidelines, I think you could go about it in the same way as someone here in the states! Look at what curriculums you and your kiddo would enjoy and are the right level for where they are at academically and dive in, and be willing to do a little trial and error ☺️
I’m from the UK but live in the US. There are a lot of similarities. Some of her videos do cover what their schedule looks like. For us, my 12 year old has some one-on-one lessons with me. For Math he works on an independent curriculum, then gets help from me and my husband. The other curriculum we do one-on-one or as a family group lesson. His schedule is typically 9am-2pm with a few breaks.
GREAT TIPS! Thank you so much! But I do need some advice if or when you have time ;) I have been using Reading Eggs & Hooked on Phonics on & off with my 5 older children to help with reading. They are slowly getting, but my one daughter is NOT interested at all. I'm talking tears from both of us & IDK what to do. I thought about taking a month or two away from reading altogether, but I'm terrified she will never pick up on it. :(
Maybe try stepping back a month then reaproaching it. Focus on reading to her and making reading fun. It'll come. All.kids develop differently and thr beauty of homeschool is there don't have to be tears
Another tip: give your children the privilege of attending a real school with other students and professional teachers. Allow them to learn and grow in the community they live in so they can be citizens of the real world rather than being educated in isolation.
Where do you live?!? Our local schools are over crowded and children are not passing tests and being pushed through. My children previously attended an expensive private school and were still falling through the cracks. And our school system is desperate for teachers - gym teachers teaching math, bus drivers teaching language arts!?! I was a teacher at a public school and do not feel it makes me any more equipped to teach my kids than any other parent! Also, my kids are in no way being isolated being homeschooled- they play sports, attend American Heritage Girls, band and music lessons and socialize at different meetups during the week! Don’t stir the pot without any evidence!
She is bluffing on homeschooling but never acttually demonstrates kids' progress - Americans should have a system in place to assess these poor kids and whether they are actually developing
Yeah....America does have systems in place in many states. They have reviews and tests. My state isn't one of them but out of the hundreds of homeachool families I've met over the years, I've never seen any that didn't graduate from homeschool to be amazing members of society with great futures.
Wow…it’s none of your business! Also, have you looked at the testing / progress of public schools around the US?!? We live in NC and children are failing 3rd-4th reading tests at alarming rates!

Not a mum but I am a teacher and I can’t stress enough how much I love your notion that “no one covers it all”

You might want to look into relaxed homeschooling.

I am single but when I get married and have children I want to homeschool and you are my guide Angela, God bless you

You are amazing! Thank you for sharing things that we homeschooling moms need to hear❤ God bless you!
Nine years in and I agree with all of these!
I received so much encouragement from you Angela. May the Lord Jesus bless your family and life. I am following you from Romania. May the Lord bless you.
Hi 👋 I needed to hear this! “You don’t have to cover it all” ❤You’re right!
I homeschool🎉 this is great❤
We love Night Zookeeper my daughter even does it on the weekends ❤
Are there any witches, warlocks, sorcery, magic, ghosts, etc... in Night Zoo Keeper?

Awesome advice Ang!
Hi, im in the UK so slightly different, but please can i have tips on home ed for a 12year old, id be interested to see a typical day for teenagers xx

Hello Angie, do you have any tips or ideas for websites that might help a 7th grader struggling with the G&B 5th grade math?
I wonder if night zookeeper is covered with my charter!

I’m not sure why keeping her children’s progress private means she’s bluffing?
Why should she post about her child’s progress? That’s absolutely none of your business or anyone else’s.
Wow…it’s none of your business! Also, have you looked at the testing / progress of public schools around the US?!? We live in NC and children are failing 3rd-4th reading tests at alarming rates!
