A bicyclist in Oconnowoc, Wisconsin on Tuesday, August 20th was not so lucky. He got hit at full speed, 79 mph, by Amtrak 1333 going from Chicago to Minneapolis. The crew had to be relieved and the whole incident delayed the passengers by over three hours. The train was captured on a webcam a block down from impact; but was taken down because of sensitive radio communications that were recorded as the bicyclist was hit. I’m sure the crew will be forever impacted by what they saw.

@Coaster_F59PHI The Amtrak Hiawatha has a maximum speed of 79 miles per hour (127 kilometers per hour). The Hiawatha is Amtrak's busiest line in the Midwest and its sixth-busiest route overall. It runs between Chicago and Milwaukee, with stops at Glenview, Sturtevant, Milwaukee Airport Rail Station, and Milwaukee Intermodal Station. A typical one-way trip between the two cities takes about 90 minutes. Amtrak wants to increase the limit to 90 mph. If you go on the Amtrak tracker you see actual speed the trains are running. The 79 number is what the crew reported at impact with the bicyclist.

@@icosthop9998 _“People do not have the Patience anymore…”_
      People never did.
It's in part because trains have become _stupidly_ long in Canada and the U.S.-nobody want's to be stuck at a level crossing watching a 2½-mile long train pass for several minutes. At a respectable 30 mph (~50 km/h) clip, a 2½-mile (~4'000 m) long train takes 5-minutes to clear a level crossing, if it isn't forced to slow for curves¹ or transition through switches (points). (At 25 mph (40 km/h), that 2½-mile long train will take 6-minutes to clear a level crossing.)
Here in Canada, max train lengths are between 3.7 km (2.3 miles or 12'140 ft) and 4.2 km (2.6 miles or 13'780 ft)-the latter max length is allowed for double-stacked intermodal. I would imagine max train lengths are similar in the U.S.
In Europe, goods (freight) trains are limited to 750 m (~½-mile or 2'460 ft) in length and will clear a level crossing in 1½-minutes at 50 km/h (30 mph). At 120 km/h (~75 mph)-max track speed for freight in Europe-they'll clear a level crossing in just under 23 seconds (less time than it takes for an intersection traffic light to make a full cycle).
      --
¹ The max speed (mph) around curves is determined by the formula:
      Vₘₐₓ = √((Ea + 3)/0.0007·d)
where _Ea_ is the level elevation of the outer rail above the inner rail (a.k.a. _‘superelevation’)_ in inches and _d_ is the _degree of curvature²_ of the curve.
² _Degree of curvature_ pertains to the change in tangential direction, a train makes as it moves through a curve per 100 ft (30.48 m) cord length travelled.
i.e.: a 3° curve with no superelevation limits track speed to 38 mph (~61 km/h); with a superelevation of 1" that max speed can increase to 44 mph (~71 km/h); a superelevation of 6" (max allowed superelevation) permits a track speed of 66 mph (~106 km/h). A 6° curve would limit track speed to a max 27 mph (0" superelevation), 31 mph (1" superelevation) or 46 mph (6" superelevation) respectively.

Seriously, *DON'T DO THIS!* It wasn't just the bicyclist that got a hell of a scare, it was the crew. Imagine you're driving that train and see someone fall almost right in front of it. All they could do is hope like hell he got out of the way in time, throw on the ebrakes and call in. They even checked to make sure he was okay, despite the fact the entire thing was purely his fault. Absolute kudos to that crew. They really went above and beyond here. There's going to be a bunch of regrinding that probably needs doing to those wheels (and maybe the track) but at least the dude got away with his life. And hopefully learned their lesson!
Seriously, do not screw around with trains. They *always* win.

(Regarding the slip-up itself, not the decision to be dumb when a train is crossing…)
I’ve been in a act-fast situation similar to this and when you (well, some people) know you are absolutely screwed you tend to slow down and keep ultra calm just to stay aware of the situation in order to handle it. After a fall like that, you have this subconscious belief that if you panic, you’ll just slip up again somehow.
TLDR: Fight/flight/freeze response is going out the wazoo. You almost FEEL drunk with the panic while you try to stay calm.

      @alwhalen3488 4 месяца назад +11

By the rules that event would have required much better radio transmissions. Either before or after hitting the 9-1-1 tones the crew should have broadcast something like the following, "EMERGENCY, EMERGENCY, EMERGENCY Train xxxx moving East on Track 2 at Story St in emergency due to crossing incident. Dispatcher xyz do you copy?" Pretty much this is required by every US and Canadian rulebook, especially in double track territory because of the possibility of a derailment affecting the adjacent tracks and also getting the airwaves clear for coms related to the incident. The 9-1-1 tones are supposed to open the receiver on every dispatch panel in the office and any available dispatcher can respond if the designated dispatcher is unavailable.
It is a very unnerving situation for the crew. I have been there several times. You can forget what to do in the moment, but that is what is required.

If you want to play with trains then create yourself a model railroad. DO NOT play with the real thing, they can kill ya.
Not to mention inconvenience a "bunch" of other people at the same time. All to try and cross the tracks ahead of the train. (shaking the head)
18th vehicle stopped on the crossing.
--- My Timeline; additional to as noted.
    0:02 crossing equipment activated
    0:15 gates down
0:16 oh, no, not a cyclist attempting to beat the train? !!!!
0:36 Train is visible to the camera clear of a utility pole at right of screen; and cyclist still coming
0:44 cyclist crashed (loses a hat?)
    0:45 train horn
    0:48 emergency application audible
0:52 cyclist and bike clear of train (inside the second) (37s from gates down to on the crossing)
1:22 brakes start to apply (34s and 7 vehicles after application across the crash location)
1:53 train stopped; 1 minute and 5 seconds to stop (3 locomotives +
    15:16 train starts to move
18:00 train clears crash location (2m44s for rest of train to clear)
18:15 gates up (started rising at 18:09) & traffic moving
18 minute delay to everyone else for a FAILED attempt to beat the train. Something tells me that he has done that before without issue. If he had waited, a wait of less than (37s + 2m44s =) 3m21s of train movement to clear the crossing. Probably less than a minute without slowing down or speeding up.

Once the train is put into emergency it takes a lot of time to release the brakes again especially on long freight trains. That is because there is s something like a hose (or brake line I don't know the correct word in English) that needs to be filled up with air again and that takes time depending on the length of the train

I don’t blame the engineer for putting the train into emergency, unfortunately when this happens and there is no collisions that happen, it can cause a crew to get in trouble. As stupid as that is, managers don’t care and neither does the corporate side. There’s an unwritten rule I’ve heard of which is “don’t shoot it until you hear the crunch” thankfully that guy got out of the way though because the emotional and mental effects of something like this actually taking a life is something no one can understand unless they go through it themselves.

    • @alwhalen3488

Very true. "Don't dump until the bump" is a pretty general idea in the locomotive engineer business. One of the reasons is that from the height of the cab you will lose sight of the object just a bit before the train gets to it and some people (like this guy) manage to get out of the way with a split second to spare.
