I know it has not much to do with the video, but I need to know if I'm not crazy, my father is obsessed with the fact that I think is wrong to pay 7USD per hour as a minimum wage even if you work at McDonald's..... He defends the fact that is legal and people aren't obligated to work there.... I try debate a little but he is stubborn by nature and an economist so I know is useless to try convince him. I just want to know the perspective of other people.
no individual is obligated to work there, but the system relies on a permanent underclass of people that doesn't have any other option, because of disabilities, lack of education, criminal record, etc... so while no individual has a gun to their head there is a violence that comes from the structure of our economy. that's actually one of the main criticisms of liberal economists by Marxists so it is funny that it played out in your family

This is messed up, but depending on if you live in certain parts of the US and he works for a company it’s bound to happen- he’ll get fired right before retirement age. Then he’ll be desperate to find another job. Happens to a lot of older folks here in FL. My mom desperately trying to lock down three jobs to make ends meet has completely changed her worldview. She realizes how expensive it is to live, has apologized to me profusely and told me she wants me to inherit the house and to never have to strike out on my own. But unfortunately this was only something she understood once she was put in that financial situation. A lot of older people refuse to accept data as a fact and will throw out their 30+ year old anecdotal success as counter evidence. Unless they experience it for themselves, they won’t understand. It’s kinda like boxing, you can tell them repeatedly to keep their hands up, but there’s only one thing they’ll understand: getting punched in the face.
If the state isn't taxing the wealthy appropriately ("trickle-down economics!"), the poor has no money to be taxed, then the middle class is thus squeezed for everything they're worth. The stagnating real wage in th US _since the 80s_ is the easiest way to demonstrate that the middle class is being steadily eroded. Compare and contrast the data throughout decades if you have time, in real value terms only, so the wage erosion from inflation is already priced in.
With all this in mind, the country is doomed to a crumbling tax base. Tax is how the state pays for infrastructure like roads, etc, (was going to say healthcare, but it's the US, I don't know how much is from the state. Medicare, maybe?)
The future that is projected from this, is the state that is steadily diminishing in power and influence (failed state, much?). Plutocrats that will accumulate more and more power as most of their wealth (capital gains) stay untaxed.

He's a great lad, been on both ends of the income bracket, and he really knows what he's talking about. Just in case this is relevant (for people like your dad), he had his undergrad degree in LSE (economics and mathematics), and an MPhil from Oxford.

at best entertaining but a bunch of arguments between space cadets are not much use otherwise .
The debates were frustrating to watch. Watching conservative and red lefties try to ignore and distort reality was not fun.
A good debate or discussion is a wonderful thing, however I find myself in agreement with Vaush when he says the other side is no longer willing to debate. They simply spout their talking points and lie repeatedly, and nobody needs to watch that.
I think I would agree with your statement if I edited it to 'Vaush's content was at its best when he debated people with actual beliefs and the moral underpinning to defend those beliefs with good faith arguments.' And I suspect Vaush would heartily agree, but those people don't seem to exist on the right anymore.
@@charlesparr1611 I contend that such people still exist on the right and they are quite numerous. The issue is the topic about which they hold actual convictions. Namely, religion. Specifically, various forms of christofascism. Which is something Vaush refuses to debate. Which, fine, he doesn't really know enough to debate the subject successfully anyway. But the point is that he could still be debating if he'd put some work in. Then he might not get stuck in endless loops debating morons in chat all the time.
