Very interesting and confusing......I wasn't involved with BTO until 1984, so I'm not going to be any help with you question....I don't remember ever hearing that VH opened for VH, as their first album wasn't released until '78, and was a hit record. I think you may be remembering this wrong. When we opened for VH in 1986, if there had been any previous shared bills in the two band's history, I'm sure someone would have mentioned that.........Maybe some online concert history will be some help....lots of info out there......
Back again for another listen. I'm commenting on your drumming style now and what a showman you are. I love that choked crash cymbal at 8:56. Most guys wouldn't bother doing that. It's a subtle thing, but the devil is in the details.
Hey Gerald......what an awesome comment.....I truly appreciate it when someone takes the time to comment on an astute assumption....so great to know that, even 35 years later, someone notices something like that..........All the best to you .....with much gratitude!
I was at this show , The Halloween show. And closing night 86. The Palace ROCKED HARD!!!. We partied out in the upper parking lot for an hour before the show. Incredible night. Incredible year, insane show!
So cool that you were there, and you found this video.................Yeah, it was an amazing night, the energy was wild....and only 34 years ago!?????
@@willswitchcraft Whatever you got that you can find is always welcome. It's good show how things really go down for those whom don't know or are more importantly..fans...
JB that is one of my thoughts about you when you talk VH because if you had seen them from 78 on you would really freaking out.. I tell folks all the time when they say how lucky I was,I agree 100%
I was there. Remember thinking what a strange choice for an opening band. Just realized you are in the band lol. I'm just saying the pairing of the two bands raised some eyebrows, thank you
Yes, agreed. It turned out that VH was really happy with the response. Seems like their fans probably had older brothers who had old BTO records, because the fans seemed to know lots of the songs. It was a strange pairing, but it worked somehow.......
I saw this concert in Ft. Wayne, IN and absolutely loved the energy that BTO bought. I believe they recorded "LIVE, LIVE, LIVE" on this tour, which I listened to constantly....LOUD!
Awesome that you found this video. We'd recorded L.L.L the year before, mostly in Tallahassee, FLA, but took some of the tracks from another live date in '85 as well.......Back in '85, I wasn't playing drums yet, but I played a little keys on that album.....just stuff like the little piano bits in Mississippi Queen, TCB, etc......Glad someone still listens to some of that old stuff, loud.................
@@willswitchcraft one thing I noticed in this video, I could have swore that the drummer was left-handed though. I know it's been a long time but for some reason that's how I remembered it. Either way, good stuff and thank you for the response.
I saw this show in St Louis two nights in a row. The second night I was pretty much broke from the first and while walking up to the arena I found 40 bucks and a bag of weed. Myself my buddy and about 10 people around us at the show literally had a really high ole time. Ahh the good old days !!!!
What a cool story Jim. I'm glad you found this video. I totally remember the St. Louis shows. I got a phone call in my hotel room asking me to come up because Edward and a few other musicians were having a jam session, and they needed a drummer. I came up and just kept time on a guitar case (with my hands) so the other musicians could play. It was quite surreal and memorable.
No point comparing stories.....I suspect that we both have really awesome memories of that week! Glad that you got to recall them after seeing this video....
I’ve seen BTO, The Guess Who, Ironhorse, Union, Randy Bachman solo many times. I still went to the 5150 tour because of BTO as much as VH themselves. I’ve seen so many concerts but I have never seen a better response to the “opening act” in my life. Slightly younger people sitting around me would freak out when BTO would launch into one of their many hits because they didn’t always know who sang/wrote these songs. It was literally getting two major concerts for the price of one. I saw them in Seattle and even though Johnny Austin wasn’t working for BTO anymore I saw him backstage and had a chat with him. RIP Johnny Austin!
Thanks so much.....wonderful to hear your perspective and memories......Yeah, the opening act response on 5150 was amazing. VH were really pleasantly surprised. (we were just supposed to open the first leg, but they kept us on for the whole tour, as it went so well). I loved Johnny Austin, and am so glad you brought him up......What a kind, funny, optimistic and genuine human..................
I'm a massive fan here in England 🇬🇧. I've got albums box sets etc but never seen em live. Here in Britain they never hit the spot for some reason and its still a mystery to me the reasons why. You are very lucky. Treasure the memories!!
Hey Clive, yeah, I guess the band didn't have much support in the UK. I remembe being in London for a couple of nights, but we didn't play a gig - we were just on our way to Germany, where we did a bunch of shows......Glad you found the video
@Will's W I T C H C R A F T many thanks for the reply I even managed to find a copy of the 2010 album . Can't go back to memphis was a great track. My wife has a lot of family in Tennessee all of Scottish background so a few of them liked BTO also. 👍 all the very best from good old England 🇬🇧
I have Scottish heritage as well, so that's nice to hear, as I also have a recent upload on my channel about working with Nazareth.............I hope things are good in the UK.....I went through in Jan of 2020 on my way home from France......Had the original version of Covid (but didn't know it)
Heard Randy talk about this tour recently. He said BTO had just come off their own tour when he got the call to do VH. Fred Turner couldn’t do it, so he basically went out as the sole original member with some hired hands. Good stuff.
Kind of.....Timmy Bachman, Randy's brother was also on the first 2 BTO albums (and an original member). And true - Fred decided to stay home with his family, as we'd been touring quite steadily since '84.
I owned the LLL album back in the day. The live sound compared to the earlier Japan release captured the powerful BTO lumberjack even better. And CF's inimitable "gravel truck voice" on Mississippi ...... simply irresistible 💪.
Great Vid Thank you,I saw the tour in Toronto CNE outside, with Loverboy, was a crazy seen people were lighting pizza boxes on fire and tossing them like frisbees.
Was there at the Cow Palace for the 5150 tour but on Halloween!!! You guys had lit pumpkins around the edge of the stage! A lot of folks were wearing risky costumes that even for a 15 yr old shocked me. 😂
@@willswitchcraft - I know right? BTW, did you play a Ludwig 402 snare on that tour? I’ve recently gotten a late 70’s BB 6.5 x14 and it really cuts through.
Yes, I've quite a few over the years, both the 5" & the 6.5" versions. No matter how many snares I've played and owned, they still feel like home. Good eye....
Yeah, it was a strange dynamic. I was a little surprised that Randy took solos, but it's part of his habitual thing, especially the drums stick portion......and of course he's a massive LBreau fan - although not many people ever picked up on that........thanks for the comment
I remember none of bto from huntsvile hah. I just wondered who was in the band. No mags I ever saw had info. They were ok .the lighting was not good as seen here .vh had a bad night sound wise. I'm glad I was there .vh wouldn't return 4 6 years. Thanks 4 the share 😂

Dropped back in after hearing of Tim’s untimely passing. What a thrill this must have been for you!! Again, you have impressive drum chops and you’re a great showman. 😮 💥 I sure wish I could have seen this tour. Was Salt Lake City one of your stops?? I saw the OU812 concert in ‘88. I grew up in southern Alberta but was attending BYU back in the mid to late 80’s… and have lived here in Utah ever since.
I just reached out to Timmy's son, after hearing of his passing. ....Yes, I believe the 5150 tour did hit SLC, but honestly, I don't remember it....................thanks for your comment
Great footage. Always many questions about that Tour. Why a 3-Piece? Why Backing Tracks and Fred’s Vocals even being there? Thank you so much for this, wonderful. Powerful drumming, great job. I love the Live album (all versions) even if not totally Live
thanks for stopping to listen.......Answers: When we started the tour, I was playing keyboards, including piano on TCBusiness, and some guitar bits, including a handful of vocal samples.............Garry Peterson (from the Guess Who) was playing drums. After an accident, I took over as drummer (there's a whole video about it here 'Texas Jam')....For a while, we had 2 different people on tour with us playing guitar, a guy from the Pacific Northwest, and then, Leslie West (from the band Mountain)........We'd hoped he'd basically fill Fred's shoes (Fred didn't want to tour again, as we'd been out quite consistently for the past 2 years)......Leslie was great musically, but things didn't really 'gel' with the personalities, so we ended up just doing it as a 3 piece........Timmy tried his best, but neither he nor Randy can really sing anything like Fred. We decided to use a little bit of his vocals, to beef up the harmonies on 3 or 4 songs. The amount they got featured in the mix was up to the sound man. At some shows (we did our own solo shows as well during the VH tour), he'd use almost none, sometimes he leaned on them quite heavily......
@@willswitchcraft Thank you for the quick response and the answers. Being a huge BTO fan, I enjoy seeing/hearing all versions of the band. I have to say, this performance is stellar as a 3 Piece. Timmy looked and sounded really good and certainly had the energy. You killed the drums…fantastic show by all three of you. Glad someone had this on tape as I was always curious about this short-lived incarnation. Cheers to you!
Thanks for saying Hi Michael. I'm sure you probably heard, Timmy died a few months ago. I had been in contact with him over the past few years, which was great. He was a really friendly, kind, happy dude. A real loss. I'd been a BTO fan from the early years, so my 9 years working with Randy were a blast......
Should be interesting to see who's playing. Of course there was also the version with Randy Murray on guitar. I used to play with him a million years ago, and introduced him to Timmy, Robbie, etc....
You didn't hear this from me, but......................................yes, but only his harmony parts, as in the chorus of Rock is My Life, TCB, Roll on Down, etc........The sound man tried to use them very sparingly, but sometimes, they really helped........
You're probably one of the only people who would have picked up on that. Fred's voice is so amazing, he's like a Harley, growling low and powerful......I miss that guy.................thanks for your comment!
Fred refused to do tour. Wasn't Tim playing and managing at same time? Fred could not have been pleased to have his vocal tracks used on tour. Noticed how they were edited out before you can hear them on Fred's songs. I do wish Fred did the tour...
I'm quite certain that he was.. ........in another upload (on YT, about my VH tour) I include a photo of me playing keyboards on this tour.....I'm almost positive that it was taken at Folsom Field, and Leslie is just barely visible in front of my key set up....I remember that show......great crowd!!!!! (I've watched the videoed Dave Matthews concert at that venue a few times)
is somebody knows who was that drummer i have never seen plays with BTO , i was thinking Gary Paterson was there for that tour, i seen them opening for Van halen but can't remember, it was not the best year/era for BTO ?
That's me on drums. Garry Peterson broke his leg earlier in the tour, and I switched from playing keyboards to drums. The most iconic years of BTO were really in the mid to late 70's. There's another video on my channel about the VH tour, and another one about the Texxas Jam - also part of that tour.
@@willswitchcraft .....allright i appreciate your answer but is it possible to know your name , did you also made some recordings with professional band ?
My name is Billy Chapman. (I'm called Will now) I played keyboards on the BTO 'Live Live Live' album recorded in 1985, and drums on the Bachman "Any Road' album, with Neil Young, in 1992, as well as many other projects over the years.
@@willswitchcraft ....allright, thanks very much for the details, you know there's always somebody we didn't know about musicians, i'm a maniac of music of all styles and also a kind of archivist and a drummer for near 50 years but a little bit on retreat ....
when BTO reformed in 1984, Robbie and Blair did not want to get involved. They were reportedly frustrated to miss out on a big tour like this and rejoined a few years later.....there was also some drama between Randy, Fred and some of the previous members (very common in the biz)..... there are a lot of egos and differences of opinion involved, so for a while, there were actually2 different versions of BTO out on tour.
In the beginning of 1986, Fred Turner decided to stay at home with his family, so Timmy and Randy Bachman came out, with Garry Peterson (from the Guess Who) on drums, and me on keyboards. Part way through the tour, Garry injured his leg, and I took over on drums (starting at the Texas Jam - there's a whole video on my channel about it)......Also, for a few weeks, Leslie West (from the band Mountain) was touring as a second guitarist, as we'd covered one of his songs - Mississippi Queen, on a 1985 album....
@@willswitchcraft The piece being played at 7:04 is from Francisco Tarrega it's a classical guitar bit that Randy threw in his solo the title of the piece is" Adelita " he's playing the first part of the piece . . .
they weren't interested in working with Randy and Fred with the new version of BTO, which basically got 'reformed in 1984. (brothers don't always get along, as you probably know). I'm not sure why Blair declined getting back involved. Of course, when BTO was reforming, no one had any idea we'd be on a big legitimate current rock tour like VH.
Very Cool....... I remember listening to Not Fragile, as well as Fragile (by Yes) around the same time......very different, but each very cool in it's own way............Fred's voice on that track was exceptional.......
@@willswitchcraft great that you and John reconnected. He writes about these sorts of escapades, they may jog some of your memories. Frank Levi (road veteran, Yes, Billy Squier, amazing SIR Marshall modder) took me under his wing and all his stories were like this footage - cross sections of a media time capsule many don't consider to exist.
Pretty Sad, I know. I think it was Laura or perhaps Lori, but she wasn't with us for very long. Really cute and friendly, and had a great work ethnic.....
Yeah, I know, right??! It made me feel even more at home..........Still a Zep fan, decades later, but great to see that the VH crew were promoting that vibe....
Agreed.....100%..............I spent a lot of time on the road with Fred. He's an amazing bassist, a wonderful human, and......that voice!!!!! All the favourite BTO songs were sung by Fred too, From Blue Collar to Sledgehammer (chorus), Not Fragile, and some of the rarer tracks as well...............Even though I toured with a few different versions of the band, I have to say that, without Fred, it never really felt 'legit'
Understood....feel free to speak you mind and change your vote........You should know however, that it is NOT a term that I came up with, it was used by fans and even by some of the VH crew themselves - 36 years ago.....
I agree! They weren't Van Roth in the early years so I don't know why some people call this version Van Hagar. The band was named after Eddie Van Halen, and maybe to a degree his drumming brother. I do like Sammy better than David TBH.

And I think you might be the man to answer this question
Back in I believe 1978 Give Or give her take a year I'm not sure can't remember 76 77 78
I went to a BTO concert whom I like and like ever since I was introduced to that not fragile album
Van Halen opened for BTO
Now this was at the Spokane Coliseum in Spokane Washington
When Van Halen got done blowing the doors off the Coliseum BTO was up And unfortunately it was not pretty I always went to the front of the stage I took pictures
It was an open floor situation 1st come 1st go where you want I always went front center up against the hockey wall
When BTO came out to me it was great but the people just it was ugly there was whiskey bottles getting thrown on stage it was pretty sad people not appreciating BTO and I've always Is wondered What Had happened between BTO and Van Halen
Then to see your video in the eighties we're now BTO opening for Van Halen just kind of blows me away and just makes me wonder what really happened From the seventies to the eighties
I would love to hear any of your comments And Insight on that if I could even leave my personal email that you would send me I have been going to concerts for many years And have seen every rock band that came to Spokane Coliseum Up until about 1980 I believe the last concert I went to at the Coliseum was the cars in 1981 and it sucked so I quit going to concert
Disco moved in and I moved on
I would love to hear your insight on that situation of Van Halen opening for BTO back in the seventies

Saw this in Billings, Montana. Loved it!!!
Glad to hear that
Saw BTO on this Van Hagar 5150 Tour 8/11/86 Worcester Centrum, Mass. BTO kicked ass! Great show!
glad that you found this video........I have some VH video footage from that tour on a playlist called Evidence of Noise, on my channel.........
Saw this tour in NJ. I enjoyed BTO more than VH. VH just didn't have it any longer, after DLR left.
wow.................that was in the Meadowlands as I recall.............glad you found this video

No Lefties.....before me, for a couple of years, Garry Peterson was drumming (from the Guess Who)......he's also right handed
Ahh..the old days! So many great memories. Thanks for sharing. 🤘🏻🤘🏻🎸

Happy to supply some memories Daniel.....it was quite a time.....
Awesome stuff! I was at the second to last show at the Cow Palace on November 2nd. It was a crazy, great time.
Great to hear. All the shows there were great. I think the whole VH band and crew were really in good spirits and top form....
Thanx for sharing! 👍💪🤘
Greetings from Austria 🇦🇹
Hang in there, I hear things are a bit stressful there with all this CV19 drama.....Glad you liked the video
Caught the 5150 tour in Kansas City was awsome! And BTO great!!!
Cool that you found this video! ! !
I think your story just a little bit cooler than mine. Great time to be young. Rock on brother
No point comparing stories.....I suspect that we both have really awesome memories of that week! Glad that you got to recall them after seeing this video....
Saw you on the 5150 Tour at Alpine Valley Wi
You guys Rocked !!!
So glad that you found this video then.........
Fantastic stuff I always wondered what it was like on that tour! Big stuff!
Yeah, it was a trip......thanks for stopping by to watch...

Wow, don't remember the pizza boxes, damn!
Was there at the Cow Palace for the 5150 tour but on Halloween!!! You guys had lit pumpkins around the edge of the stage! A lot of folks were wearing risky costumes that even for a 15 yr old shocked me. 😂

Man, these shows are legendary in the Bay Area to this day. I was at night 2 and it was great!!!!
Good to hear you were there. Yeah, after a long tour, it was a great place to end off. Everyone was in a really good space....
Saw this show in Biloxi Mississippi. Freaking incredible
So cool. Thanks for stopping and watching
Love the nod to the Lenny Breau style in Randy's solo. Not many guitarists would attempt a solo while opening for Van Halen.
Yeah, it was a strange dynamic. I was a little surprised that Randy took solos, but it's part of his habitual thing, especially the drums stick portion......and of course he's a massive LBreau fan - although not many people ever picked up on that........thanks for the comment
Thank you for coming --goodnight! (?)

Saw this concert in 1986 in Hollywood, FL.
Glad that you found this video then!!
Even though you remember nothing, I'm glad that you found this video and were able to relive this night via the web
Saw this show at the Forum in Los Angeles. I think Leslie West played with you if I remember correctly. Didn't realize Fred Turner wasn't there.
absolutely right. Leslie did most of the tour with us, (I can't recall if he was there in LA or not), but yeah, Fred didn't do the 5150 tour......
Wow! So at that Texxas Jam BTO became a 3 piece Band? You did an Awesome job I remember going to first 2 concerts on this tour then the Texas Jam I remember BTO Rocked me.
Leslie West (Mountain) played at the Texxas Jam with BTO
I was also there. That was my second Texas Jam.
First was the year before with deep purple and the scorps before then. Missed 87, made it to the 88 Jam with VH monsters of Rock Tour. We are blessed that we even got to see these events another thing is I had no idea that that was going to be the last Texas Jam

Dropped back in after hearing of Tim’s untimely passing. What a thrill this must have been for you!! Again, you have impressive drum chops and you’re a great showman. 😮 💥
I sure wish I could have seen this tour.
@@willswitchcraft How cool that you reached out to Tim's son. I'm sure he appreciated that. Cheers!!
It must be tough for him, he lost his uncle (Robbie Bachman) in January as well

Not on a regular basis, but I think it's time to reach out again.....
Saw that tour in Reno
Awesome!!!! glad you found the video then
Randy's an all round Rock hero
@@willswitchcraft I did. Sad about Tim and Robbie. I have tickets for the “new” BTO in Massachusetts. Still waiting to see who’s in the band.
Should be interesting to see who's playing. Of course there was also the version with Randy Murray on guitar. I used to play with him a million years ago, and introduced him to Timmy, Robbie, etc....
Were you on the tour in Porland, OR? For some reason I thought it was Corky Laing, and I recall "Mississippi Queen" in the set list.
Yes, we did the Portland show, as far as I can remember........
We're Fred's vocals on tape and used at the concerts?
You didn't hear this from me, but......................................yes, but only his harmony parts, as in the chorus of Rock is My Life, TCB, Roll on Down, etc........The sound man tried to use them very sparingly, but sometimes, they really helped........
@@willswitchcraft The concert that I was at, I knew I could hear Fred's voice and I kept looking around for him. Thanks.
I do wish Fred did the tour...

is somebody knows who was that drummer i have never seen plays with BTO , i was thinking Gary Paterson was there for that tour, i seen them opening for Van halen but can't remember, it was not the best year/era for BTO ?

I saw that tour.
Good to hear - glad you found this upload!!
I saw Portland Maine show
so cool that you found this, then.....
Where was blair thornton and randy's brother the drummer?
when BTO reformed in 1984, Robbie and Blair did not want to get involved.
Who was in BTO during this video and tour? I know Randy has talked a bit lately about it!
I saw this tour in Pullman, Washington, at WSU Beasley Center. I thought BTO was great.
Thanks for that! Glad you found this video.......
What song is he playing at 7:04? Great video by the way
I can't remember the name, sorry........
@@willswitchcraft The piece being played at 7:04 is from Francisco Tarrega it's a classical guitar bit that Randy threw in his solo the title of the piece is" Adelita " he's playing the first part of the piece . . .
great insight...thanks!
Why wasn’t Robbie or Blair on this tour?
they weren't interested in working with Randy and Fred with the new version of BTO, which basically got 'reformed
in 1984. (brothers don't always get along, as you probably know). I'm not sure why Blair declined getting back involved. Of course, when BTO was reforming, no one had any idea we'd be on a big legitimate current rock tour like VH.
Can hear Zeppelin playing over the P.A at the arena haha
yeah, pretty sweet......"get the Led out!"
The first song I ever learned to play using bar chords was Not Fragile.
Very Cool....... I remember listening to Not Fragile, as well as Fragile (by Yes) around the same time......very different, but each very cool in it's own way............Fred's voice on that track was exceptional.......
