Right before the 2025 Aquarius Party - Read the description for info

Who would expect that in the middle of winter, in the middle of nowhere (a remote area of Western Canada), on a night that's well below zero, if you take a drive up a 1km long icy, rough, hilly driveway, there's a bizarre house, where someone is hosting a dance party for the Aquarians in the hood, and their friends. An hour from a streetlight, or a sidewalk, or police, etc. Everything is prepar...

Hey Will… just checked out your latest video, and man, that Tasty Chips GR-1 is such a cool addition to your setup. The way you’re working with those granular textures feels so natural-like it’s already part of your sound. It’s subtle but really adds a fresh layer to your ambient vibe. Also, I’m really sorry for being so caught up lately… life’s been a bit crazy. I hope I can catch up properly soon or at least not lose touch as much. I miss our conversations
thanks for stopping for an ear...................I miss our connection too hope things are going well...Happy Now Here
exquisite - new plateaus in the search for sound
so eloquently expressed...............thanks
Nice 👍
For some reason, while I admit the Hydrasynth's interface is very good, I never really liked the sounds coming out of mine. I ended selling my desktop version, bought a Blofeld, and falled in love with its sound very quickly. There was something "blurry" about the HS, especially with distorted sounds, while the Blofed always sounds precise and sharp, even with dirt. It's menu divy, but with Edisyn, editing patches is very easy (I think it supports the HS too btw)
very interesting.......I loved my little Blo, but as with other Waldorf products, after a year or two, the data encoders began to fail. If you use an alternate MIDI controller, you can avoid those problems. Thanks for adding your voice to the conversation.
The bells of the backdrop Vehicles in the distance Body moving in sways Sounds exploring Momentary silence Awakening senses Accompanying the wind in the trees As dark sky begins its transformation Awaiting the rising sun Calming imaginings.
glad to know you're still dancing to sounds on YT
Sounds awesome! 🤩
thanks...............endless exploratory options............
Interesante 🔥🔥🔥
thank you
Hi Will, your approach to the process of making sound is so sophisticated as always and it's a pleasure to watch and listen to! My GR-1 arrived yesterday and wrapping my head around it is still to come, but I have an idea to share with you my results when they're available.😅
Can't wait to hear what you pull out of your GR-1. They ARE very frustrating and difficult to get to know, not the most user friendly, but I am impressed with the sounds available from them. I'm still just scratching the surface, but I think there are worthwhile rewards ahead.
@@willswitchcraft Yeah...for sure!
That sounds really amazing. A very colourful palette of sonic snippets 👍. Excited when you present your first tracks with it 😉.
Thanks, I'm trying to wrap my head around how I'm going to integrate it...............
you paint an awesome picture, glad you guys had a blast
thanks.................
Big thanx for sharing your thoughts about gr🙏,! That’s strange no audio input… only with an audio interface, that’s very pity… greetings 🖖👽
Yeah, the lack of an audio input is quite an oversight....still a cool box though
like and sign) just get ostirus and thats great. now im looking forVirus TI Desktop 🤣 thanks)
Hope you enjoyed the video
@@willswitchcraft absolutely, I like your style of presentation) may i ask, if you used ostirus vst - how much difference is there from iron in terms of sound quality?
I still haven't tried it...........sorry, I can't offer any insights there..............
@@willswitchcraft no problem, in any case, thanks for the answer) I basically thought so, because having a synth, it would be strange to look for its emulation)))
There are some great softsynths and emulations out there - no question.......nice to have cheap options
oooo this is vibey
thanks..............we have to be prepared • who knows who will materialize in our zone?
@@willswitchcraft ooo 100 percent
If you need more control just use MIDI
As you can see in the video, I have the ability (with my many MIDI controllers) to assign control that way.......The review is just meant to give any overview of the hardware....but thanks
I dunno... who would expect stained glass windows in a school bus..? Liberace's favorite gig was a snowed in ski hill. 11 people showed up. My favorite gig was backing up the Karroll Brothers in Merritt. We didn't make any money until the next day. We took a station wagon back and collected all the discarded beer bottles. Weird gigs are always the best!
Great comment. I totally remember the Karroll Bros.............I think perhaps they called it 'leather rock' or something, as I remember that during a fog machine section of the night, the guitarist would throw a guitar on the ground (the roadie gave him one that looked similar to his regular axe), and he'd beat it with a whip.....very dramatic.....................ah, the old stained glass in a bus trick - a good memory, but I guess we have to change with the times......
@@willswitchcraft the K Bros had a few different incarnations but always heavy. In the 70s I was drumming in a top 40 house band playing steady in a fancy new dinner club overlooking a river. It was a dress up dine and dance place. We were playing Joe cocker with a Little Help, Knock 3 Times, Ur Momma Don't Dance etc...all that junk was new. After 6 months 5 or 6 nights a weeks we took a break. Somehow the K Bros replaced us for the break. They were a 5 piece then so it was Pete, John (drums), Paul (bass), Steve Ballison on B3 and a singer named Chris something. At some point in the evening, when patrons were enjoying their steaks, the band would wrestle Chris to the ground onstage and then force him into a straight jacket...apparently it didn't go well. LOL Pete is an amazing guy.... responsible for women's mud wrestling in the 80s and then Bif Naked's manager of many years. He also brought Jeff Waters into the store one day when he arrived and started Annihlator. Seemed like every time I saw Peter he was up to something different.
Interesting.......I was doing something with Bif once, and it seemed to me that she and he were living together at that time.....
@@willswitchcraft Not sure but I think they were a couple at some point. Weird twist.. About 11 years ago I was in Trail for my Aunts 90th. Half the Kootenays were there. Some of my relatives were talking about her. Im not sure how but apparently we are related. Is she Italian?
No idea. Many years ago I had a friend who was hanging out with her, but my connection was minimal

Ah, now I understand..........if you're into listening or dancing to this type of music, you're cool enough in my books...............
I can't help thinking what you would be able to do if you had the keyboard version with the ribbon etc.. It's been 2 years since I got my 49er and I believe they will bury me with it.
Yeah, having a keyboard would be pretty sweet. I have a few different controllers that I use - depending on what I'm doing. (for this video, I just wanted to keep the main focus on the Hydra, so I decided not to use a controller, but I actually studied piano, so smaller keyboards are quite limiting for me)
Friend, DSP56300 emu for free!
Always been a little curious about the Hydrasynth. Especially because I started seeing it on stages stacked on top of a Rhodes. Excellent video and hard not to have gas for this little beauty .
If you live near a city, I'd recommend renting one for a month...........that's always gives the most relevant insights.........
DSP56300 Emu - our way
Despite the limitations you mention, the GR-1 is still one of the few synths that I would buy again if mine would get destroyed or lost. The new 3.0 firmware makes file management a breeze.
So glad to hear that. I haven't downloaded the new firmware yet, but it sounds like I should get on that.......Thanks....a great comment
Fantastic sounds Will. Really cool. Are these all your own patches and if so are they available? All the best for another tour round our star.
I played a few of my own sounds in the last part of the video. I have 2 small Hydra patch banks on Gumroad. Do you have a Hydra yourself?
@@willswitchcraft I have the 49 key and I don't imagine I will ever part with it.
Yeah, don't make the mistake I did, by getting GAS for something else............
I was planning on selling mine but maybe I'll wire it up and give it another play.
I'll be curious to hear what you decide......
dsp56300 - your friend now
That's my favorite synth, it replaces the Virus on that spot. I wish you could upload your own wave forms. And I wish they would had take a more traditional approach to FM,PWM and wave table. Especially wave table. I use Pigment if need wavetable or Operator for FM. Even though it's one hell of a synth! I just feel like there is a huge miss opportunity. FM is so easy compare to their mutators.
Hey, thanks for adding your voice to the conversation
I love my Hydrasynth Desktop, but I really wish they had a software editor like Modal, Moog and Arturia synths and a dedicated sequencer.
I just got an email from someone who's creating one right now.....his name is Ariel Nehmad. Keep an eye out. It sounds like it will be FREE software, (but I'm not sure if it will have a sequencer).
@@willswitchcraft Cool, Cool, Cool!
Yeah, keep your eyes open........From what I've seen (he sent me some graphics) it looks awesome
is it just me or does spoken audio sound weird? boxy?
Very astute......If you listen to my other gear reviews, you'll immediately hear the difference. I didn't realize it until I went to edit, but it seems like the Neumann mic I usually use wasn't active in my software, and thus, I was just using the mic on the laptop......What a shit show..............It won't happen again. I figured the content was clear, so I posted it instead of rerecording the whole session.
I’ve been on the fence of selling my hydrasynth keys, but I think I will spend more time with it now. I do use the hydramorph third party editor, but it’s a bit too deep to be something valuable compared to just programming on the hardware.
I haven't taken a look at the editor yet - interesting......I've been in contact with someone who's building another software editor, which may be an improvement (and I think it's going to be free)
@ I would be very interested in having an editor that is more immediate. Hydramorph is very powerful, but it’s basically a massive modulation engine that lets you sift through sound in real time and see all parameters moving. It’s good for exploratory sound design, but it hasn’t produced a lot of usable sounds for me personally.
agreed......hours of fun for exploring and sculpting, but that doesn't mean that you're going to be able to use those kinds of sounds, unless you're doing soundtracks, experimental or 'ambient' type work
Every day my Hydra is a new synth. Loving it!
Awesome!
Some amazing sounds here! I’ve always been intrigued by the hydra synth. Might need to sell my taiga and see if I can get one.
I'm really impressed......the more patches I hear people come up with (for different genres), the more it seems capable of
@ I’m not an analog purist or anything (although I love and tend to find I prefer the sound of analog..) but the one complaint I often see levied against it, is that is sounds ‘distant’ or ‘cold’… I suspect that’s more a matter of poor sound design choices though.
The 'distance' could be because so many of the patches are bathed in reverb. People are coming out with a really wide range of sounds from them: ruclips.net/video/OINrzQJvOWU/видео.htmlsi=k_VYc5CL0iv0vCJQ
Happy Birthday, Will! Whenever that was :)
thanks, that's very thoughtful.....it was just days ago
Wow! I’m 2 patches in and now I have to get one
Glad to hear that. I guess I should have added: WARNING: Powerful & Addictive
IMO Great workflow, very good mod matrix, good playability despite mini-keys (I've got the Explorer), good sounds (but too unbalanced towards the "digital territory"), poor onboard delay/reverb effects (I don't use the other effects).
Interesting perspective......thanks for adding your comment
The layout and workflow is unmatched.
I agree. At first it can be a bit daunting, as it's an usual architecture - but once you spend a few hours, I find it excellently designed......
Yeah, it's a sound design beast and extremely intuitive. And it's MPE functionality is top notch. It also for me was the first hardware synth that really made me not care about analog vs digital. Don't get me wrong, I have a couple dreadbox units which I love to death, but I use my hydrasynth way more
Ah....glad to hear your enthusiasm.......It IS a great synth, not matter what category it's in.....
Search midisynth hydra sigabort. Full screen comprehensive desktop editor. You're welcome.
Nice patches, hmm looking at my budget this "should" be possible hahaha
I can't think of any synth that offers more power and complexity for this range...........
I agree that it would be very good to copy paste macros and mod matrix bits. Best solution is make your own custom INIT template and copy it to a whole bank. But still.
good idea............thanks
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
thanks
The only thing I dislike is how it sounds on the lower octaves. It gets mushy and sample like.
I think it depends on the patch. I've created some really analog sounding patches. Quite tight and punchy
@@willswitchcraft the typical waves go down to the clicks. The Wavetable ones are the ones that get weird. I guess it would be expected for them to sound weird the further down you go but they do get weird in a not so useful way. Mushy and broken. Also, if you go down all the octaves, the first two repeat.
Really interesting, thank you
You should try also the irdium , i hesitated bewteen both , went iridium core for the form factor , but hydra is on the menu aslo maybe in the explorer format for a deadly combo ;) The screen is BIG and clear lol for our old eyes ;) The key word you said : inspiring
I like the Iridium, but there were a few things that I didn't like about it as well...................I think both are incredible pieces of gear, for sure!
@@willswitchcraftwhat didnt you like about it the iridium out of curiosity? *side note: i also sold my hydra like a dummy. i needed the $$ unfortunately and regret it.
The Iridium was amazing, but for Granular, I just picked up a T.C. GR-1, which has far greater granular engine capacity (16 times more grains, etc.) than the Iridium. I also found some of the programming felt like I was just working in software on a DAW, instead of working with a synth. Perhaps that's because of the touch screen - it's amazing, but to me - a less 'tactile' experience.
I have both. One of the most powerful combos available .
Wonderful
It's nice but can't do anything that my other synths can do so a waste of time for me
understood...............each of us has their own demands and requirements
Snow or Virus B for 500 usd?

I have the deluxe. It’s great to just sit down and noodle various vangelis sounding tunes
They all seem endlessly powerful
Awesome overview and jamming Will 👍👍👍. I am Lucky to own a Hydrasynth deluxe, and this is certainly the gear I am using most. Playing with the two layers and the poly AT makes it incredibly powerful. The modulation capabilities are also limitless and you easily get lost in it , and suddenly you hit THE sweet spot….I think I will never sell mine !
I'm sure it's incredible...............enjoy!
Appreciate the video Will, I don't think I could ever come to selling mine.
Good choice - keep it!
Just excellent. My Hydrasynth is already stored away because my movement (as the Access Virus too). Both synths are real beauties and offer a never ending journey for sound design. Your patches are amazing and beautiful. Hope to see more 😉.
Yeah, I should probably try and get around to another patch bank. I have a couple of small ones available from a few years back.................
Excellent. I always love hearing improv from the Bellcycle.
thanks.......this one was pretty minimal, but that's the way the Improv thing goes.......ya just never know........
I won't buy any gear without 'Will's Stamp of Approval!' :) After your description & pros/cons, I expected much worse from the demo, but I found it hypnotic and not that bad.. except for that palindrome.. that is bad. I wouldn't pay 500 for it, but for 100 bucks.. maybe 200, it could be a great, fun guitar pedal.
funny...yeah, don't buy ANYTHING without consulting me..............the Atler Y has a few good sounds, if it was true stereo, and didn't keep shutting off, it could really be a good purchase for some people......
I got the explorer (keyboard version)! Havent dug into yet !
Happy digging then.......................WARNING: it's bottomless
I got one. My fave thing to do is make a patch/patches before going to sleep :)
Ps. These patches you made are crazy good! Super impressed and inspiring. I've heard and made experimental patches but there are things I've never heard in other vids here. Thanks for sharing!!
