Super Mario 64 70 stars in 0 a presses by Pannenkoek2012

- EDIT: As of May 2024, Super Mario 64 was beaten in 0 A presses on God's chosen version: the Wii Virtual Console, by Marbler. His run (abridged) can be found here: • World First SM64 ABC A...
This video is made as a thank you to pannenkoek for such great content like this. All footage is made and owned by pannenkoek ( / pannenkoek2012 ) in this following playlist ( • Super Mario 64 - A But... ) and the spread sheet for help ( docs.google.co... ) except for the ending where i have to give a shoutout to zuri9138 for the clip ( • Super Mario 64 Ending ... )
I actually got the idea to make this once the last any% a press was saved in bitfs at the pole. But I never actually got the motivation until 1- I felt like making a 10 subscriber special 2- pannen mentioned me in the description his latest video (go check it out! • Miscellaneous Observat... )
This took me at least 3 hours to edit, 3 hours to render and another 1 and a half to upload. Made using windows movie maker and next video will be in august. (unless i get a 100 subs then i will make a 120 tutorial)
please note that this is not an official run, but rather a collection of the 0 a press TASes published on pannen's channel. Once an official run will be made, the route will make more sense than the one in this video

the fact that this is beating the game with no a presses like, 2-3 times faster than i can with a presses both upsets me, and amazes me XD
This is edited and sped up.
@@tamanakio7552 im aware XD i really mainly meant it as a joke, im sure i could beat it faster than this did. i just assumed some could relate to it and brighten their day a bit XD
Well I can't beat Mario 64 in one week so I guess I relate
Considering Mario waited 71 hours for the BitFS platforms to rise I think you could beat it faster. Other than that, yeah, the speed is pretty impressive.
Why is this so hilarious. I also like at 8:57 where Mario's just kicking sand for 40 minutes then suddenly teleports using parallel universes and, while laughing like a mad villain, literally T-pose helicopter descend on all the mortals of the dessert before vanishing.
Actually, the entire point of that A press save is that it DOESN'T use PU movement.
no PU's
no maps no weird cameras and not enough speed to get to a pu
I cant wait until somebody makes one complete 120 tas, start to finish, even if A gets pressed 19 times. It'd just be interesting to see how far we are already, and to maybe look back at it 10 years from now

I would love an explanation for some of the weird shit that happens for no discernible reason. Like pausing a big jillion times and shifting Sand land.
Watch this video for an explanation of the first star of the video: ruclips.net/video/goad2ijHBE8/видео.html
I've only just started watching [at the 47 minute mark] and something just occurred to me-
A lot of BoB was making use of the Wing Cap's hat in hand trick, which requires the wing cap to be unlocked. As such, wouldn't the order that this video was presented in be impossible? Or are there other methods to collecting those stars that just wasn't shown in this video? Since HOLP is important in ordering, I am curious what levels need to be avoided and what levels can be done whenever.
I'm sure this video isn't a placement for an official run, but it's at least a cool compilation of the videos made so far and it's a good idea to see how the run would ideally look.
i agree, i found out about pannen's excel sheet (in desc.) and found all the videos to make it happen. it can and will be improved.
Now that 70 stat is possible 0x, it'd be neat if someone made a complete TAS run. I'd do it if I were talented enough... Might be worth learning

I see mario was taking some rolling lessons from sonic
So this looks pretty cool, and when it's not 2 in the morning I'll probably watch it, but it would be cool if the title were a little clearer that this is stitched together footage of his videos. When I saw this pop up in my recommendations I thought it was an actual developed route. Maybe something like "Super Mario 64 70 stars in 0 a presses based on Pannenkoek2012's Videos"
Also, you may want to make clear that the route shown in this video is Virtual Console only, since the 0xA technique used in Bowser in the Fire Sea depends on the Virtual Console specific rounding behavior of the oscillating platforms that causes them to gradually drift upwards―behavior which is not observed in an actual N64 console, or in emulators that correctly handle floating point values. The ABC crew is hard at work (and have been for the last few years!) developing a method to clear BitFS 0xA on the original hardware, but as of today (2021-05-21) no such method has been verified to work yet, and on an N64, the any% A Button Challenge route requires a single A press in that stage.
Also, since this is based on the Virtual Console A Press count, you may have wanted to use the VC-specific version of the entry to the Secret Aquarium (I did peek at the first few minutes of this video). Granted, it's not nearly as cool as the version they had to develop for the N64, but if they were developing a 0xA Virtual Console "official route", they probably would have used that alternate version instead so as to loosen some restrictions the N64 version otherwise places on their routing―like having to do it first, having to skip the red coins in Bowser in the Dark World, having to do the extra-complex setup in Shifting Sand Land... You get the idea. Although I guess the N64 version takes less time to execute, so maybe they'd use it anyways? They did find a way to optimize building up speed in HMC, so I honestly don't know if the newer strat is still faster or not.
Shut up nerd

Why does the part where he goes into the castle already has 70 stars?
because this isn't one big tas, it's multiple of his videos stiched together into what a 70 star abc tas might look like. and it just so happens that the clip of him going into the caste that he made he recorded it with a 70 star file

@@the_furf_of_july4652 the tas team is currently working on one, and at the same time optimizing the previous tases to make it as fast as possible. because they want the tas to be on n64, it's going to be a 1 A press tas. to see the progress videos for yourself, head on over to fifdspence's channel, he's the main taser behind this and deserves more credit.
HOW DID YOU RLB OFF THE POLE IN BITFS?!?!?! (and why didn't you do that the first time instead of using the "stupid-not-possible-on-authentic-nintendo-64 rising platform glitch"? I was seriously worried about you when you grabbed the pole)
Because the rising platforms save an A press, it is possible on WiiVC, which is technically an official emulator, and Mupen (the emulator for n64) has a option to emulate WiiVC. This was caused by a different integer rounding method that WiiVC used. Everything here is possible on WiiVC, which as I said, is a official release.
that is not a remote lava boost, but vertical speed conservation. when mario lands on a floor, his vertical speed value does not change until he starts walking. but, we can exploit this by first landing on the floor from below (because the rising platforms do not have a ceiling hitbox) and whilst you can't walk with your speed conserved, you can punch, and the moment mario drops off a ledge, his stored vertical speed is applied to him, which in most cases is 0, but here the lava bounce gave mario a boost of ~70 ish vertical speed, thus saving an extra 3 more days of waiting.
is this all played in 1 version, because a any% 0 a press is impossible in every single version, the glitch in bitfs is only in a certain version (a version that can't do a full 0 a press run either)
the version that can do bitfs can actually do a full 0 a press run since the only a presses gained are the ones to enter ttt (not required to beat the game)

guys... wth is even happening in this video? I want to get some runner to react to this and explain it on stream or something cause for half the video I was just like: "why?"
Its a tas its meant to visualize a perfect run
As far as i understand, in many cases, the goal is to build a lot of speed inside a level and then exiting it and using the acquired speed to bypass obstacles. But building enough speed is tricky and even more so without pressing À, and it seems there's various glitches used in pretty creative ways in order to achieve the intented result. But it is terribly convoluted at times. However, you may thind some commentary videos on Pannenkoek channels that may help you understand what's happening.
So of you're still interested pennen has descriptions as to what's happening in most of his videos. I dont even play sm64 but I still find them super entertaining to watch
