This large painting has been in the making for a while, and I finally found time to finish it!
Get out your art supplies and scribble along with me as I have a bit of a candid chat about making 'personal artwork' for yourself vs for the internet.

Such aesthetic studio vibes. That pallete is so thick and coated! Its its own organism

Haha that palette is about 15 years old and it’s HEAVY 😂

So many yummy ice cream mountain moments in this one! Always admire how meaty and relatable your candid chats are without a script. Lots of food for thought and a feast for the eyes 💖

That is so bizarre! My mum was just telling me this morning about how she's also listening to the Harry Potter audiobooks as she paints and that I should try it too! We're hardly big HP nuts so I just find it a funny coincidence to hear about it twice in the same morning from two separate painters. XD
This painting is absolutely beautiful! I love the methodical and patient process of each section. I also agree that sometimes it's good to be selfish about work, and to keep it to ourselves when it really makes us happy. I feel like it's a shame that this idea of, like you were saying, artists feel a lot that everything they produce has to be sold or at least marketable in some way, and it's a shame because it really stunts a lot of our own self-indulgence, I guess if that makes sense? Which is important too! It's good to be alone with a painting and enjoy the process without feeling like everyone else has to see and judge it too.
Having said that, I really appreciate that you did still have the will to film this. XD It's such a visual feast.

Haha! HP is a great thing to listen to while painting - Stephen Fry’s narration is just 👌✨ perfect. Haha!
Yeah! It can be hard when making art is both your job and your hobby! Where’s the line sometimes? Going into a new piece with the idea that it’s private/just for me and THEN a deciding to post about it once it’s done can be nice too. Perhaps that way it dissolves a bit of fear of judgement etc ! Maybe! 🙃

You are an incredible artist Sophie. Only just stumbled onto your channel but I instantly subscribed. I love your work, your style, your personality. This piece is so beautiful and thank you so much for sharing it. I've only just started making art 'Just for myself' again and I'm really having a lot of fun.
I know what you mean when you said you were originally making it for yourself and then suddenly wanted to share it because you love it so much. I had this happen to me only the other day and I thought to myself "this was supposed to be just for me" but here I am sharing it. By creating something just for myself it seemed to take all the pressure off - it gave me the space to just create and play around. Just wanted to say it was really nice getting to know you a little and to say thank you for sharing this work, having a chat and inspiring me to get into the studio again :) - Christine, a fellow Aussie (from WA here)

Thank you so much Christine 💖 making art just for ourselves is so important from time to time. It’s like a hug and a comfort blanket all in one. A time to try something you’ve always wanted to try!

@@SophieMcPike I completely agree. It's such a soothing and healing process. I'm kind of shocked at myself for not doing this more earlier. But as soon as I decided to do more work just for myself something has just clicked within me where I'm making better decisions about my art which has lowered my stress and anxiety levels (across the board) and puts the fun back into creating :) Thank you for responding 🥰
