Comparing a job to a business though lol. If you can convert some side project into a startup you can make wayyy more than 100k in comparison, especially if it goes unicorn. But also as a job if you manage to make it to Sr Engineer + as a Software Engineer you will double that really just from going to work and doing what you do. Most trades cap because there is only so much you can do as a single person, so unless you expand into business space thats all he will ever make, and it will decline as he gets older and can't take as many clients. But Hustle is Hustle. Do what you love to do is more important doing what earns you the most money imo.
If its any consolation I still think you're in the better place because of job security. Every company uses some kind of software, but being a hairdresser is a social word of mouth game. It's subjective as hell. I do wish I could braid though, that's like $30 an hour across the board.

I make $33/hr as an avionics technician on private/corporate jets. If I scuff the leather on a seat I've just cost the company a couple thousand in repairs. If I nick a wire and don't notice it could arc to something else and cause a fire. There's a system they use during low-vision landing (dark out/storms) that uses an infrared laser behind a plate of lab made sapphire because sapphire interferes the least with infrared that I have to be very careful with. Etc, etc, etc. If I misdiagnose an issue with the jet I could potentially cost the customer hundreds of thousands of dollars. It's stressful. I want to move to a different field of work in something like IT.

I make $33/hr as an avionics technician on private/corporate jets. If I scuff the leather on a seat I've just cost the company a couple thousand in repairs. If I nick a wire and don't notice it could arc to something else and cause a fire. There's a system they use during low-vision landing (dark out/storms) that uses an infrared laser behind a plate of lab made sapphire because sapphire interferes the least with infrared that I have to be very careful with. Etc, etc, etc. If I misdiagnose an issue with the jet I could potentially cost the customer hundreds of thousands of dollars. It's stressful.
