Hello everyone. My interview with endocrinologist Dr, Janet Rubin on how to discontinue Prolia. We really appreciate all the support you provide by watching the videos and for your kind comments. We wish we had the time to respond to them all. Stay safe, stay active and keep well.
I took one shot of Prolia for my shin splints. I’m a healthy, physically active 59yo male (marathons and triathlons). Currently taking Vit D3 and Calcium daily. At least two orthopedic surgeons recommended Prolia after MRI showed a few micro fractures on my tibia. Both surgeons suggested either 1 or 2 doses only (6 months apart). Your thoughts please, on the risks of rebound effects e.g. fractures. Thank you.
PLEASE add subtitles in Spanish - so many people in South America are suffering because this drug is extremely expensive, sometimes the insurance companies do not continue giving the drug which makes people stop it. d we already know what happens if stopped with no plan. There's no information online in other languages.
My wife, a dance instructor, was diagnosed with osteoporosis and her doctor prescribed Prolia injection in the stomach. It changed her life. She has become almost helpless. Constant severe bone pain all the time, day & night. She has almost lost the use of her right hand, I have to help her dress, wipe her down after a shower, and cut up the food for her on her dinner plate. I wish I could sue the firm that makes this stuff.
I only took one Prolix shot and I could not walk or get up from a chair without help. Before the shot I was walking about 2 miles a day and after the shot it took about 6-8 weeks before I could walk a short distance. Only through pure grit was I able to walk normally without sitting down every few feet. I regret taking the Prolix shot and will not take any more.
I am so sorry 😢 Bless you for sharing. What the heck did the prescribing MD have to say about this ? 👉 Please demand this MD to Report this adverse affect. ... did you know that MDs are not even required to report the adverse affects. In the comments once a patient said how the doctor scoffed at the pile of paperwork he'd have to fill out from the pharmaceutical company... If the doctor does not, you can submit what happened to the National adverse Effects Drug database. Sorry I do not have the exact name... I at 62 take nothing ... Please let your darling wife know we are thinking of her.
I've been on it for several years and had the bone pain initially but pushed through it and have had some great success. I don't dance but I hike several miles 3-4 times a week and I row in a single scull with a group of older women with chronic illnesses 2-3 times a week from Spring-Fall. I'm sorry this happened to your wife, but for some of us, this drug has been wonderful. @@cryals4714
Yeah don't do it. My aunt was the same. Six months after is the risky time for going off it... my mom reversed her osteopenia with diet and excercise taking vitmin k2 of 45 milligrams not micrograms. And taking various herbs and minerals none of whcih were calcium. She is in her 80s and also reversed her type 2 diabetes. I am very proud of her. She got lucky and got a diabetes nurse who was ayurveda trained in India and supported her. Her doctors were very unhelpful and she had to go private to get the She needed as her doctors didn't support her choices to go off medications. Anyway if she can do it then it's possible. I'm aunt has been taking proliia I've given her raw cacao which helps if you take ut twice a day to procure stem cells which I figure must be a good thing and vitimin k..unfortunately she does not take advice very well or follow any diets whras my mom is very into a positive frame of mind that her body cna heal. My aunt is very stubborn and didn't listen to this video so she just tstopped taking it without a plan and six months later she seems to have a slight hip bone bruise and has some vertebral collapse fractures. I tried to help and inform her but she just doesn't have any interest in helping herself. So what can I do. Her sister my mom has tried too. But the diet and excercise and positively taking your health into your own hands seems to really work. My mom also reversed her high blood pressure too and basically off all her keds except for an emergency insulin needle she keeps in the fridge just in case. Good luck have faith and positivity and I am confident that doing that can really help a lot.
The difference between exercise and drugs: Exercise has measurable benefits and no harms. Drugs have some benefits and some harms. It's alarming that removal of the Prolia drug results in harms that did not exist before taking it.
It's bizzare that you're not meant to take it for more than two years or something but there's no way to safely stop taking it?? Same with antidepressants you're only meant to take them for two years but once you take them coming off them can cause worse issues than you started with. When such lack of common sense and safety and indeed informing patients of any of this...its very hard to think they have our best interests at heart at all. I kept going to my doctor about an ear problem...I got handed lexiprp for anxiety cos the doctor made me very anxious cos I had such ear pain and dizziness and itching I could hardly sleep and the doctors made me afraid ...cos they'd given me a banned drug already...she hands me lexipro which I knew had side effects and asked her what re the side effects she said there are none and I should read about it because it would make me have more anxiety. Lexipro isn't even for anxiety apsrently ...like wtf?
It also seems very counterproductive that a drug that was created to help your bones can quite possibly compromise your teeth. It also it doesn't seem a good thing that if you stop, you can have rebound fractures. Doctors used to follow, "First do no harm." That now seems to be out the window. Unfortunately, I've been on it almost 7 years. My new endo recommended reclast. I'm terrified of the idea I could be in worse pain than I'm already in. I feel stuck and just may continue prolia. No one explained I would have to relay to a biphosohanate. I was told tumlos/forteo.
I believe until more research is done or doctors have a much better understanding of these drugs then they shouldn't push then to the intensity they do. They fearmonger patients into making these choices.
Prolia and then, subsequently Actinel nearly crippled me! after the two injections th doctor said I needed. I could feel my entire skeleton ( but especially in my thighs and hips) almost feel hot. I would walk around and was conscious of every step I took. I would not have had a third shot as I believe I would have been crippled. My GP realised I had had a bad reaction. The doctor then swapped me to weekly Actinel and after about three weeks the same thing happened. I joined Save our bones institute, ditched all these meds. I take D3 + K2mk 7, Vit D3 extra 1000mg, magnesium, selenium, zinc, Co Enzyme Q10, vit C and collagen. I swapped being vegan for low carb, high fat vegetarian diet and eat vintage cheese, Greek yoghurt and open range eggs plus avocado. Reversed a fatty liver, lost abdominal fat. Ghee and Extra virgin olive oil for cooking and meals.I Exercise in the pool with hand weights, plus weights twice weekly and walking/run as I always have. My bone density has improved as has my skin. I would not care if the density had stayed the same there is NO way I would poison myself again and suffer terrible pain with these medications. I shall take my chances with thinner more supple bones than dry, brittle, painful bones.
Nice my mom in her 80s reversed her diabetes with similar strategy to you she refused drugs she also reversed her high BP and her type 2 diabetes ...she still has bad kidneys but her kidneys have stayed at a level of stage 4 from stave 5 at one point. My aunt on the other hand had menopause at 35 didn't take hrt took proolia wouldn't take any advice to get any excercise or change her diet took phosamac and the other one actinel and bisph9sphenates and back to prolia which she went off six months ago didn't look at any of these videos or take any advice for having a plan to come off it now she's got hip pain and agony all day long. All I can do is tell her where the water is. I cant makes her drink it. She eats very badly and its sad but also the choices we make for our taste buds over our bodies needs is a choice that won't end well. It might be pleasant to eat all the nice sugary foods but in the long run the vegetables and things are what e need. She also is afraid to eat any fat cos she has high cholesterol. Sigh. I send her videos but she doesn't watch them
Would you be so kind and put down what make of products you got and at what dose please I found your post very interesting and I hope you doing well I’m on alendrate at present but specialist want me to on zoldronate infusion for 3 yrs I’m not happy I’m scared incase the side effects don’t go and I’m stuck with them for 12 months and also what it can do to the jaw I want to try without but haven’t got a clue what to do Your help will be very much appreciated by myself and others that read your post I’m already taking calci-D 1000 along with the alendronic acid which I would love to sto taking Last yr I had two severe wedge fractures that gave me kyphosis Took dr 5 months to tell me because they were missed on X-ray A Ct picked them up and stated they were present on X-ray I was told the sim was muscular so carried on bending twisting possibly making matters worse because the pain now is terrible Iv had to request a brace so I can get used to adjusting my posture as best as I can Here in the uk they don’t tend to use braces unless absolutely necessary What ? Are severe wedge fractures that have caused kyphosis not warrenty a brace until there at least healed I’m going the vets next time I need help
Before my mama passed away, she took at least 3 injections of Prolia. Eventually she developed hip pain that couldn’t be explained. It was debilitating and we went from doctor to doctor, not understanding this could well be a side effect. At the same time, she was declining from vascular dementia. We had stopped the Prolia. She ended up in inpatient hospice care on morphine from the pain. She would grab at our clothes and beg us to help her with the pain. She lived about 2.5 more weeks.
Iam sorry to hear that why the physicians not tell about these effects My mom just recently to start ProLiant and iam concerned when I read the leaflet
Thank you so much for this. Last year, at 62, a bone density scan showed that I have osteoporosis ( neck of L femur) and osteoporosis lumbar spine and both hips. I am healthy, I exercise , I take vit d and k , I eat well. I am not overweight, I bought ( and use) your book exercise for better bones . My dr put me on a weekly biphosphonate but I couldn’t tolerate it. She then started me on Prolia. I did my research ( after my first shot) and have not had another. I have decided to continue on my healthy regime rather than take the Prolia at this stage. (I have also had a total L knee replacement and am having my R knee later replaced this year - old meniscus surgeries). Exercise is the medicine of choice at my age. Thank you! ( From Australia)
@Marina Harris, you can’t just stop Prolia, you could get rebound fractures. Prolia stores dead bone cells and when you stop taking it, the dead bone cells leave your body at a rapid rate. Then the chance of fractures is very high. Sounds like you have a high chance of ending up in The Prolia trap.
@@marinaharris4880 That’s good, you should get your bone markers checked to be on the safe side. Rebound fractures can happen even after only one dose of Prolia.
@@marinaharris4880 Also it’s a good idea to get your parathyroid checked. You should get that checked at the same time as your calcium and vitamin D levels. The test should be done early in the morning in the same blood draw, as you will get the correct result then. Best of luck with your osteoporosis. I’m also only using diet and exercise for my osteoporosis, I saw what happened to my Dad and Aunts when they took osteoporosis drugs, many fractures in their spines.
Have been on prolia for 10 yrs..no problems so far..in fact feel no ill effects so far..had multi fractures before the med..but did have 2 spinal thoracic stress fractures after 3 yrs on prolia..but none in the last 7 yrs..🇨🇦
I had one infusion of a biphosphinate and had a severe reaction. I was told not to have it again. 5 years later i have gone through a bad distal fracture of my wrist, 6 mos later an incomplete fracture of my forearm., same arm. Two years ago i developed a fracture in my top jaw which developed an infection. It was not until then was i asked if i had ever had a biphosphanate drug for osteo. This dental specialist did a root canal and advised me of this issue. Surprised? Oh YES! AND WHY had i not been advised of this issue??? Since only having that one infusion i have been adament to di this on my own i guess. Every doctor i have seen has strongly encouraged me to go back on these drugs for ny osteo. I carry items up and down my stairs, do other heavy lifting doing yard work, walk stairs, take Vit D3 and have that and a bone density every year...on my dime until i met Medicare age. If my doctors who are trying to get me to take these meds and claim they did not know of this problem, but an endodontist does what does this say to us elderly patients?
I’m due to have zoldronate infusion after being on alendrate acid for several months Iv had two sever wedge fractures which have caused kyphosis Ur post is now making me think Ditch them all and try via diet My problem is I can do much in the excersizes department with having severe emphysema I’m suffering enough I don’t want to take the chance of suffering more because of perscribed drug which are making the pharmaceutical millions of pounds whip people suffer because of taking there meds I wish u all the very best and hope diet and exercise alone keeps u strong and healthy
My doctor (Nurse Practitioner) tried for years to get me to take Prolia. I refused. Finally, I was coerced into getting one injection. She was aware of the fact that I am highly sensitive to a lot of medications. Nonetheless, She did not tell me about the black box warning nor examine my mouth as instructed in the black box warning. When I refused to get a second injection, she became angry and argumentative, then stormed out of the room,. I had one injection two years ago and immediately suffered every reaction mentioned in the warning. My implants and crowns fell out, my right jaw twisted to the right with severe pain in the every bone in aches as well as my muscles. I have difficulty walking or exercising, My weight dropped from a healthy 115 to 93 pounds. I can see my rib cage. My nipples inverted and breasts dropped to below my rib cage. My skin looks like it is falling off of my bones and it looks like crepe paper.. This drug should be taken off the market. It is a death sentence!!!! The doctors that recommend it should be sued and jailed.
I've done three injections and stop it .Had pain everywhere on my body, blur vision, high cholesterol, and many skin problems.I continue to exercise almost everyday and feel much better.Time will show..The fact that the pain is gone is very important
My mom has 2 injections . The third one will be coming soon My question is : Can we just suddenly stop it cause i have read a lot about Prolia that the side effect are very bad. Thank you
@user-zh5hy1zg8b hi,I am not an expert but my jaw pain stopped, my skin problems on my knees,my joint pain everything went away after about 2 weeks.even my period came back every month( i thought I was into early menopause)..I'm exercising 3-4 times a week and also stopped taking large amount of calcium.im on Mediterranean diet and try to take all the vitamins and minerals from the food.I take only vitamin d and k2 and calcium 500mg daily.i pray everything will be ok,and I hope for everyone the same
@@sofikoundourakis910 did u had skin problems during the treatment? im on my first injection and i have skin issues in face ( like dry skin and red marks ).. a few but its weird on summer . i know tit might be irrelevant to prolia.. but how can i know? i had skin problems occasionally years before prolia..
@bluebeam1141 I had many years ago psoriasis on my elbow,a small mark. These hard dark spots on my knees were something different. I went to the dermatologist and didn't knew what exactly was,she gave me cortisone (which is the worst for people with osteoporosis). So I didn't took it i just put my daughter's cream and vaseline.I forgot to mention that I had white flakes on a spot on my head and also after prolia I got rosacea on my nose.I don't know what to tell you but I will never ever take it again. No one is answering my questions, they didn't even hear me when I said I feel pain in my whole body, they just said ok one more year and then we move to another medication
@@sofikoundourakis910 im a young man of 48 and i had dermatitis for years before taking prolia.. so i cant say that my rush is from prolia. this condition (seborrheic dermatitis) comes and goes depending of stress, weather etc.. doctors dont know the cause.. like the one you have.. only medicine for this consists of cortisone.. doctor never told me that cortisone can affect osteoporosis or the treatment for it.. i understand that drugs can affect different people with various ways.. its better to have red mark in face instead of high risk of fracture.... my mother takes prolia for 2 years and she didnt had any negatie symptoms.. what i understand is that its a situation that u must observe and act accordingly . sorry for asking . r u greek? seeing your surname .. :)
Very helpful, thank you! Just had my second Prolia injection and am wondering whether to stay on it, so now have decided 'yes' and also to continue to work at my health and exercise. Wanting to live to be a healthy 100 years +. Life long vegetarian here and also very fit, former triathlete. I really appreciate you both, Janet Rubin, and Margaret Martin. 🍎🍎
@Margaret Martin, Please interview a materials science engineer to provide definitions of strength, density, mass, fracture toughness, etc. The focus solely on density is misleading!
I was diagnosed with osteoporosis at 30 and stopped the meds after 1yr. I am now 62 and should have started an exercise program with The Bone Clinic in Brisbane Australia which has evidence that exercises where you are doing weights changes BD. I need to start the program but have other medical issues I have focussed on. I have also been looking after elderly parents in pain the last few yrs & have neglected my own health.
I have had 3 injections of prolia but after the last one I'm having lots of side effects like terrible bone pain muscle weakness and I'm sorry I went on this drug. Also I wasnt told I cant come off it. But I'm going to come off it as My quality of life is getting poor. Why are these issues about this drug not highlighted.
I got my second shot and my dr didn’t tell me about any side effect or if I can stop using it without rebound effect ilI really want to stop it help please!
I am 69 years old and have had only one Prolia injection. I had lower back pain before I started the injection and it’s not gone away. My doctor had me start physical therapy, but it hasn’t really helped my lower back pain. I’m just confused about when this will stop. My physical therapist said pain could also be stress related. My husband had a stroke a few years ago, but I’m not sure I agree with stress inducing back pain. I see my doctor in December, so we’ll see.
Dr Rubin is an unbelievable physician and expert in her field. Very impressed with her work and knowledge, we need more women in medicine with her expertise and dedication.
Wonderful discussion! I am 74, had 11 Prolia injections. Actonel for a year before Prolia, Fosamax for 9 years before Actonel. I was diagnosed with an Atypical Femur (stress, not complete) Fracture in August. I was non-weight bearing for a while, so did PT to regain strength. I have officially stopped Prolia (due 10 days ago). My endo will start me on Actonel in January after he looks at bone markers to see what’s going on. Question: I have always been very active - taught ballet many years (still some now), I walk, I do Pilates (modified now), have started working with free weights - Is it recommended at this time (relaying off of Prolia) to back off of the exercise so as not to tempt the devil, so to speak? I am very worried about spontaneous spinal fractures. Thank you.
My mother has had 2 injections of Prolia in the last year or so. I believe her last injection was about 4-5 months ago. Well, about 2 or 3 months ago she started having severe pain in her jaw, arms, legs, hips and neck. We started to eliminate all her supplements thinking it was one of them. The pain continued. She's seen a couple of doctors and they have done blood work and just tell her it's arthritis. But this pain came on suddenly and is crippling her. She said she feels like her body is cramping up like a Charlie horse. I then remembered that she is taking these shots and read about the side effects and one of them being bone/muscle/joint pain. I really think that is is the reason for her pain. How do I safely get her off this awful drug and get her back to feeling like her normal, healthy self again safely. She already takes vitamin D3/K2, magnesium and eats lots of calcium-rich foods. Before this pain, she was working out 5-6 days a week. She is almost 84 years old and takes no other medication except for those two Prolia injections.
Check out Dr. Loren Fishman, physiatrist and researcher who did several trials in Yoga for Osteoporosis, he has written a book with the same title. The data are convincing, it takes daily practice and has no side effects. I am a certified Yoga for Osteoporosis Yoga therapist and some of my yogis who had taken a Dexa scan before they started classes and 6months to a year later showed improved numbers. Important is to start practicing with someone who is certified and knows the Dos and Don’ts. Loren Fishman has the First series of Yoga poses on RUclips. In the age of your mom I’d definitely would choose a chair yoga option. (I teach in LA county an online class that iOS Free, but it’s only within Los Angles county limit for citizens 60+)
Dr. Loren Fishman, a physiatrist and researcher has shown through various trials that Yoga can improve your bone density without any unwanted side effects. Aside from increasing bone density a daily practice would also improve your strength and balance. He has written the book: Yoga for Osteoporosis. I am a certified Yoga for Osteoporosis therapist and work in 4 different retirement communities in which I teach Dr. Fishman’s format adapted to the chair. I teach a FREE class through the Adventist Living Well Senior Program in LA for seniors living in the county 60+ As Dr. Rubin repeatedly said every individual is different. I have several yogis who discontinued medication bc of side effects like necrosis and whose values have improved with a regular yoga practice.
@sandooch6465, even though there haven’t been FDA approved studies of these alternative exercise programs, I would suggest checking out videos by Dr. Doug Lucas ( I think it’s called optimal bone health). He has a bunch of vids with a lot of good info. Also check out the X3 device by Dr. John Jacquish and a workout place in numerous parts of the country called Osteostrong that is backed by him and Tony Robbins. I’ve listened to a lot of their stuff, and I do not consider anything controversial-they are just working outside of the traditional medical big Pharma mindset. I’m 66, had my first vertebral fracture and am very interested in looking into many different approaches. Hope this info helps!!
When you look at the dilemma for patients and treating doctors of how to manage osteoporosis, it is abundantly clear that MORE needs to be done about treatment. I’m sick of the medical approach to osteoporosis for aging women. The attitude is that it is inevitable (bone loss is but not necessarily to the point of osteoporosis) and we’ve got drugs to treat it. Yes, all the drugs do achieve bone growth, but they come with side effects that impact quality of life. If we took more steps to support women during peri-menopause period, we’d be better off. Hell … we shoul;d be ensuring all our girls are doing impact exercise/sport from the time they are little to help grow bone density in the first place and continue to maintain healthy bone less likely to fracture. For some, medication is critical given the extent of the condition and/or other health issues. This is a condition that falls perfectly into the “prevention is better than cure” because there is no cure and the consequences of fracture can be life altering.
Well said!!! I was diagnosed at the age of 47, my GYN would not help me with HRT, now at 57, and at -4.3, I’m being told, I MUST BE ON PROLIA, or, I will SOON, experience FRACTURES😞has me so depressed.
@@mariamarino138 I’m sorry this has been your situation, Maria. It will be no comfort but so many women have similar stores. The medical profession KNOW osteoporosis can be prevented for most women and yet they do nothing until you have a fracture. Osteopenia can be reversed by non-medical treatments and osteoporosis can be prevented from getting worse if caught early. Your dexa score does show a worsening situation that has put you in a delicate situation. Doctors are not interested in older women. They rely only on “take the tablet” advice and now prescribe Prolia which has lifelong issues for the patient. I do hope you can make sense of the situation you are in and get some good advice on other things you can do to prevent falls and prevent fractures. If you haven’t had a fracture yet, that’s a good sign, but Margaret Martin is someone who does have exercise programs that assist people in fall prevention, developing balance and posture and exercising safely. I really wish you the best. I was totally depressed on my osteoporosis diagnosis but have been doing lots of things to try to prevent fractures and this has made me feel less depressed. You really have to be conscious of yourself now. Keep doing some research and see how the information sits with you. Margaret is a really sensible person who does understand osteoporosis so I’d be starting with her. Good luck. Be careful without locking yourself in a black box from the world. Someone like Margaret can give you advice on how to live safely but still live.
@@mariamarino138 Don't have this drug Prolia injected into your body. I was told by a doctor that if I were to have side effects from this drug, like extreme bone pain, it's not like taking a pill where you can just stop taking the pill if you have a side effect, this stuff, Prolia, stays in your body and causes bone pain until it wears off, which could take months.
True -- a spine fracture two years ago has literally destroyed my life. Prior to that I was VERY athletic for my entire life, so exercise isn't always enough.
@@jenniferroberts7581 I’m very sorry for your experience Jennifer. Both the condition and the treatments make this a hideous condition and as women we are not supported to prevent this. I’m os teoporotic in the spine and had no idea about spinal fractures as being a risk. Fortunately I haven’t had one but I live with the fear of it so am mindful of my movements. That in itself won’t prevent me from having one so am doing a series of bone strength exercises. Margaret Martin is excellent for this as is Sara Meeks who specialises in spinal fracture rehab. I really hope you come through this. Being active and athletic is not a guarantee that you won’t develop the condition so it’s a triple shock to get it when you e been trying to look after yourself. Can I direct you to investigating the work in Australia - the LIFTMOR study now developed into a program by the Bone Clinic in Brisbane, Australia, developed by Dr Belinda Beck. She’s currently trialling her exe4cise regime with the Maradyne device. I suppose you have been given medical advice Re your rehab and realise the importance of being under the guidance of fully qualified rehab experts. I wonder at your prospects with pole walking depending on where you are at in recovery? You could check that out including Margaret’s work on that. Best wishes and good luck.
an excellent and thoughtful interview. thank you. I'm turning 70 and my doctor is thinking prolia, but I do fear being on it for over ten years or the doctor retiring, etc. I think I should wait and try fosamax even though I think that 'eats' the stomach lining despite my best efforts to take it properly. I'm very healthy and active but old age is still encroaching on my body. I've been looking for answers about Prolia and I am so appreciative. I think it's a good drug, but too complicated to come off of should and when that becomes necessary. Unfortunately, my doctor hasn't really offered any answers about Prolia or making a plan for a 'holiday' or coming off or when to really think about starting it. Yes, you shed a LOT of light on this. thank you both!
If youre healthy and fit then strengthen your bones naturally. These drugs cause problems and it can cascade badly. Being fit and healthy is the most important thing. My mom and aunt both have bad bone density my mom is fit and actuve my aunt sedentary ...my mom has broke a few bones because she goes mountain climbing so...but shes generally noy in agony all the time like my aunt who has been on everythingm my mom cured her duabetes high bo etc. Using diet and although her bones are frail shes healthy and active. My aunt is a few years older but even ten years ago my aunt was not in as good shape as my mom is now. Take your supplements eat really well plenty of greens and vitmin k and sunshine. In ten years you might be fitter thahn you are now. Oor worried about what tthe drugs ahve done . I mean its up to you. But dont forget you have options.
Fabulous information ‼️ My bride is a 4-year post liver transplant recipient from Mayo Clinic, and doing very well. 😊 Praise God. She is now 73 and had been on Prolia for almost 4 years. When should we consider a 'holiday' and how long on that holiday? Generally speaking,as I realize there is no "box" everyone fits into. 😊 Thank you.
See she didn’t bother answering the question you asked and you can’t just stop Prolia, look up the rebound effect, also read my comments above. Best of luck to your wife.
I believe that I was dx just in the nick of time to do something about it without relying in medications so far. Since I am in my late 60s, I though my problems were the getting old theme. My testing and labs reported no OA at least not in my knees and hips, regardless how painful it had become to walk and raise my arm all of a sudden. My back has been injured from extremes of work and activity, but the scan cannot look good at your upper and even your lower back, drs just assume and visually assess. MRI can do a better job but still incomplete. My lumbar is stenotic that might have contributed to my right hip and knee issues, and my nursing job makes me sit for long hours. As I am typing this, two years after the dx of osteoporosis, I am feeling almost no discomfort, and I am pain free, just a little tick here and there and most of the time nothing. I am blessed that I have never have had fractures, but I have had a few traumatic falls. I read an article long time ago that if you were a very active child, free roaming (like me; kids today are not as active as kids from the last century) the quality of your bone stays with you regardless. So trusting that and my research (I am a nurse) helped me make my decision to go med free, at least for now. As a new partially retired, I am living day by day, but making sure I take care of my body to the best of my knowledge. Thank you for your work and the drs answers because it is my experience that many dr do only prescribe without providing the education and the facts. Mine never told me that once I accept the prolia, I had to stay on it for life, or the process to effectively discontinue it. I did not like the idea of a long life with the treatment, but I was willing to take it if I fell I really needed it. I had to do her job and do my own finding work.
Im really angry i wasn't told i had to stay on the prolia for life either or the bad effects, i would not have done it. I want to stop as I have been about 8 yrs on it😡
Hi what advice for males would be offered....and what side effects may occur whilst continuing on prolia ....can be adverse maybe causing discomfort to body.....thanks mervyn australia
Thank you for informations. I've listen to some videos concerning taking Prolia but my question is do I have a choice??? I had breast cancer at 72 years and now I have to take tamoxifen. My oncologist is concern about my osteoporosis and started me on Prolia because my score is -2.7 in hip-neck. Spine is ok with -1.9. I'm doing exercise for osteoporosis mostly squats every two days and do treadmill or walk and taking vitamine D and calcium. I'm seeing my oncologist in a month. I don't like to argue with a specialist but I'm concern about the effects of prolia after 3 years. What do you suggest?
I had osteopenia at age 70 and after being on Biote Hormone Pellets for one year, my bone density returned to normal. I have been on pellets for 3 years and plan to remain on them. My last bone density remains normal. My mother had severe osteoporosis and suffered greatly for several years before she died. There are many positive aspects regarding pellet therapy. This therapy is not covered by insurance but due to medical necessity is covered under a FSA. My GP does not endorse pellet therapy citing possible risk of clotting. But as the estrogen is in pellet form and not oral I believe the clotting risk is not a factor. Do your own research.
Hello. My 84 year old mother has been on Prolia for 3 years. After having a tooth pulled recently she developed osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ). We wonder how to manage her osteoporosis moving forward as the Prolia and previous Bisphosphonates seemed to have caused her ONJ.
I took one Prolia shot 18 months ago and stopped because of the side effects. I didn't do a relay and still have pain. The doc that give it to me didn't tell me about side effects and even said all drug have side effects. She didn't tell me what to do when I stopped. I've had to turn to the internet and now had to find a doctor to do a bone marker test. Tired of this crap.
At age 50 I was recommended by an endocrinologist (Prof Ian Chapman, of South Australia) to take Prolia, basically no other alternatives. Recently advised by another endocrinologist, that Chapman should not have put me on prolia at such an early age! This drug has made matters worse, now under the care of an integrated Dr. Warning, just because someone holds a professor title, dosn't mean they know everything.
And who knows what drs might be paid for signing 'crumbies' to a lifetime of so-called' bone drugs. For some of them, self interest may be important than our health.
I was prescribed Prolia but after one shot I decide to withdraw, mainly because all the info of side effects I have learned after taking the first shot which my doctor never told me about.
Thank you for this interview. It has been rather helpful. My mother had only 1 injection. I am in a country where it became too hard and too expensive to get the injection. Is it going to be a problem if I moved her to bisphosphonates? what dose?
I ate a lot of dairy which I never thought it would effect my endocrinologist putting me on2000 calcium per day. Now I understand 600 was sufficient. I’ve been off Prolia for well over 1 year. Went on 4000 d3 with K2 280 m7. Prolia for 2years did nothing for me. Calcium went to my mainairta instead of the bone. Doctor discover that because on Prolia I start getting worse. Through tests we saw my aorta was now 4,5 in a section which could cause bleeding and death. Yes I just went off Prolia. Last time my regular doctor had bone density done and it was better. This time they called me to come in as bone density got bad. I’m 83. Was on foxamax first before Prolia but it killed my stomach . Prolia caused me financial problems because with Medicare Humana my cost is 1200.00 every 6 months and throws me in donut hole which I can’t afford. So what do we do.
I've done two prolia inj this year April and oct. is there any harm if I were to stop it now? I've had joint and muscle pain and bursitis in my elbows and my knuckle. I blame prolia. I'm a RA patient for years. Supposedly I'm in remission from RA. My dr put me back on leflunimide to help with pain and bursitis. So what would be my consequences if I stopped now before 2025?
My Dr. said my dexa scan was better then 2 yrs ago, Then puts me on Alendronate? After reading up on it, I decided I'm not takiing it, especially because of the side affects and because my bone scans were lookiing better. He is a general practitioner. So what do you think of this? Seems like all the drugs these days may help, but cause so many other things with the side effects. I'm not taking Cholesterol medicines, because my neck got so stiff I could'nt even turn my head, it hurt so bad. He keeps trying to get me too take them.
I am 58 and dexa shows -3 in left hip. Other areas are under 2.5. My Dr has suggested Evenity and I was hesitant and then prescribed Fosamax. I haven’t started it yet and would like to know if it’s a life long thing once you start these meds? Thank you!
Bisphosphonates such as Fosomax do not create the bone resorption problem that Prolia does. A good doctor will explain that you take the drugs for up to 3 to 5 years then go on a drug holiday depending on your situation. You should be told to get a dexa scan after 2 years and from that the doctor can tell if the drug is working. Once, doctors left patients on Fosomax indefinitely until they realised that long term use of the drug actually made bones brittle and exposed patients to higher risk of jaw and femur problems.
Eye opening episode. Thank you for this information. Could you please suggest timing for when to stop Prolia: for a Very thin boned woman, Numerous fractures since childhood, diagnosed with osteoporosis at 52yrs old? Dr said numbers would be concerning in a 72yr old woman, but to have such bad numbers at 52 was almost unheard of. Insurance required Bisphosphonates to start but that caused problems with diverticulosis and stomach polyps. I've been taking Prolia 5yrs now.
Very informative lecture.Thank you. Question regarding Prolia: I read the drug effects your immune system making you more susceptible to infection and UTI infection. I was concerned about that since the infection is biannual.
I went off proliA Because the ca,ciumamount of 2000 per day went to my aorta and caused aneurysm of 4.5. He found this when he did a chest X-ray. Yes, he wanted me to go on Foxamax 😢 but I went on Prolia because I was on it before Prolia and it killed my stomachs. Now I try to be careful. My bone density is osteoporosis but was that when I was on Prolia like for #-3 years. Nobody warned me of the dangers of Prolia. Can’t believe your not talking about calcium with it and the dangers of this horrible drug.
@@gloriagolemboski4515 How many years had you been on Prolia before you stopped if I may ask? Did you take Dexa recently? I am 71 and been on Prolia for seven years. Currently I am osteopenia(vs sever osteoporosis before the injection). I wish I was told that I need to take extremely good care of my teeth for if I get cavities (deep) I cant get extraction.
I have been on Prolia for a couple of years for osteoporosis. I had previously taken fosamax for a short time and then a drug hat was given every 3 months-can’t remember he name. Just this year I have experienced bone loss in my jaw and have lost 2 teeth. Is Prolia or the bisphosphonte worse for tooth loss-which is worse? I am 80 and so have rheumatoid arthritis. Thanks for this video.
I was on prolia after bariatric surgery because other oral drugs were not an option. Since I started 2.5 years I've lost all molars on the right side top and bottom and the jaw pain is unbearable. I can live with the hip, knee, joint pain but losing my teeth is not something I can live with. I won't do RECLAST because should it impact my teeth as Prolia I can't have dental extractions for a year and RECLAST stays in your system for a decade according to my oral surgeon. What choices do I have? I see nothing?
I think your best bet is an appointment with an endocrinologist who is used to dealing with complex conditions. Local doctors just don’t have the knowledge.
Hello, thank you very much for the great video. If only I had seen it earlier. I received the second dose of Prolia/Xgeva. After three days, the problems started. For a month now, l've had respiratory infections, fever, fatigue, and no appetite. Before taking the medication, I used to go to the gym, but now I can't do anything. I have cancer, including bone metastases. However, with targeted drug therapy, the cancer has regressed. At the last check-up, unfortunately, a brain tumor has appeared, although I was stable before Prolia. I'm only 40 years old. Can I now skip two trial injections without any problems? Thank you for your time.
Greetings Ms. Martin. Thank you for sharing this video. It's my 1st time watching your channel and I appreciate the content. Im 60 yrs old, and was diagnosed with Osteoporosis (Lumbar) My primary dr wants to inject me Prolia. I'm very hesitant about this injection. My only health issues are depression, lung issues and I'm borderline diabetic (no meds) I honestly do not wish to have this injection. What do you suggest. I thank you.
69, chemo treatments radio treatments 20 years ago. Prescribed Prolia 3 times 6 monthly intervals. I’m thinking of stopping this drug now after 18 months. What’s your advice?
I just postponed my 1ST PROLIA infusion until i can learn more I was just diagnosed with RA at 63 after my 3rd covid vaccine and a month later I had my 1st of MANY compression fractures in my lumbar ( all crumbling but my l2 that just fractured last week ) my Dexa scan was -4.7 in my spine 3 months ago . I cant tolerate prednisone or luflounomide and am on methotrexate for my RA i have horrible teeth that need to be removed and cant find an oral surgeon due to covid and lack of coverage on my insurance. I am panicking I also have a rare defect in my dna that says i should be at risk of OsteoSTENOSIS or indicates i have an issue in my osteockasts that i have yet to get my drs to look at despite my trying to show her my dna results . Why am I the only one who is taking this gentic defect with my osteocladts into consideration when building my treatment olan for osteoporosis ? I comment but never see any one respond to my comments its SO FRUSTRATING and i gmfeel like im talking to myself
I read your comments. Im 62 and found out had osteoporosis after a fall abd fracture a couple of years ago. Not stated meds yet. Wanted to try exercise and supplements, diet, but not enough at this point, as i ended up with a couple spinal compression fractures since and apparently didn't do much. Moved wrong??? Scary. And now i it's a struggle to get out if bed, trying to reach bottom shelves. Cant pick stuff up off floor, cant bend over . Do start over with P T and now seriously rethinking re: meds. But, i hate the potential side effects, but I'd prefer to be mobile again and stronger. My spine dexa was -3.6 not good. I was pretty good after my fall 2 yrs ago,
I’ve just read your comment and am so sorry you are going through this. Have you asked to be referred to an endocrinologist to establish a management plan for the osteoporosis? There maybe another option given your dna situation or perhaps Prolia is the best thing for you, but you really need an expert. I do hope you find someone to listen to you. So many fractures is a terrible situation. There is another drug called Evenity that could be suitable. An endocrinologist is more likely to listen to your dna results and establish a management, ent plan. Very best wishes to you.
VERY INTERESTING DOCTOR AND PYSICAL THERAPIST I AM ON PROLIA BUT THE PPROBLEM IS I HAVE ODONTHOLOGICAL PROBLEMS, NEED IMPLANT OR OPERATION IN MY MOUTH WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO ? THANK YOU FROM ARGENTINA.......
I am an osteoporosis patient for 5 years now. I took Alendra medicine for 4 years and now on a drug holiday Last year my endocrinologist suggested for a PROLIA to be injected to me. I refused because I have read an article that it has good and bad side effects. For bad effects it can cause osteneocrosis of the jaw (am sure of the correct spelling). Is this correct Doctor?
All the bone medications run the risk of osteo necrosis of the jaw and atypical femur fracture, especially if on them for a long time. It is not just a side effect of Prolia.
I would go see my dentist first before decision. Get the small cavities filled right away before a root canal is absolutely necessary, because dentists would not do extraction if you are on prolia, even after one shot.
This was a great video. I’m a 71 yo who has been on Prolia for 2 yrs. That was the plan with going on biphosphonates after. I have a lot of GI issues, including a giant hiatal hernia. So I’m reluctant to take the orals. Can you comment. What about the Iv doses. Would I be a candidate in your experience? Thanks for your help. I’ve already had a spontaneous spinal fracture prior to going on the Prolia. I’m an old 71 yo btw. I’m morbidly obese, don’t exercise and have multiple mobility issues and deformities.
I was told I could take just 3 doses of Prolia, then transition to a bisphosphonate for 6 months and then stop all drugs. I would not want to be on Prolia long term due to the AFFs and also the lowering of immune system that it causes.
@@bilquiskabir494Hello. What are the side effects? are they due to stopping Prolia? How has the last 4 years been after stopping Prolia for you? My mom has been on Prolia for 10 years and experiences pain. Her bone density is getting worse. Thank you for reply
I've been on Prolia from the age of 61. I'm now 65 and have taken 9 doses so far. My bone density results show remarkable results. My doc has advised me to continue the drug. Doc says I can take it for 10 yrs. But what happens when I stop. I cannot take oral bisphonates. I get inflammation of the esophagus. Will the yearly intravenous Zolendronic Acid help ? Is it a safe drug ? Will the treatment close then. I'm otherwise in perfect health and do a lot of exercises and dancing. Please advise. Thank you
No mention was made of WHY there is a concern with long term use of Prolia. 10 years was mentioned as a possible appropriate time frame but WHY? Also if a person is taken off Prolia another Bisphosphonate would be used that ALSO has the same side effects including the jaw necrosis side effect so considering that what point is there of just changing to another drug with the same potential problems? A good interview but these important questions weren’t answered ( and it’s very hard to find answers!!)
It seems that What Dr Rubin is saying is that Prolia is the preferred, most effective first choice for osteoporosis, and then biphosphonates. I just started with Risendronate...should I switch to Prolia??
Depends on your situation - age, health and reason for the osteoporosis. Bisphosphonates increase bone density for most people but studies show the demensobub (Prolia) works faster. A further talk with the doctor would be best - if you don’t have to go on Prolia, don’t. You have to take it for the rest of your life otherwise you lose bone when you come off it if you don’t take a bisphosphonate. I’m pretty sure that bone resorption does not occur anywhere near the same rate as Prolia. The Mayo Clinic site has an interesting article on stopping pisphosphonates and suggests that if you’ve been on them 3 to 5 years, the effects appear to continue for several years, but that’s going to depend on a lot of factors, not the least of which is the reason for your bone loss in the first place. Best to talk with your doctor.
Just a thought, but find out if the company that makes Prolia (I believe it’s AMGEN in the USA) offers a Patient’s Assistance Program. The physician that prescribed Prolia for you should be able to assist you in some way.
The risk of necrosis and atypical fracture of the femur increase the longer you take any of the bone drugs. There is evidence also that Prolia affects immune cells and actually inhibits the bone remodelling process itself over a long period. With bisphosphonates, you can safely come off them and have a drug holiday without rebound bone loss and fracture. Doctors used to leave women on them indefinitely until it was realised that the quality of the bone itself. Dr Rubin stated that she prefers to not give Prolia to younger women because of the extended period of time they may need to be on it, so recommends it for her much older patients.
NEW INFORMATION: It isn't just bone density that is a part of the bone puzzle. This video, at minute # 25:24 explains that when strength training exercise occurs, bone DIAMETER increases which adds to stability of the bone. So while the density may not increase with strength training as much as with drugs, the drugs cannot increase the bone diameter. Think of trying to snap a small diameter piece of bamboo (which is hollow). Easy to do. But a wider diameter piece of bamboo is much more difficult, if not impossible, to snap despite also being hollow. This is what strength training can do for you. BMD is NOT the entire picture and doctors need to learn this new information. Here's the video: ruclips.net/video/32wcPznDigE/видео.html
I had 3yrs of Prolia, least Sept I stopped my last injection. My Doc said she will get me to have a scan in March and if I've gone downhill then she insists on me starting up again. I don't want to have another injection, I'm doing as much exercise (weight bearing). I've had spinal fusion from L1-L5 plus the medius/medius muscles on the right hip were torn. I had 2 failed surgeries to repair the muscles, the 2nd surgery the Surgeon used mesh which now has caused great irritation. I wonder if I'm now at risk. I worry about having foreign products. Cheers Rosemary Perth Western Australia 72yrs
Hi from WA. I’m 77 and have had horror spinal fusion. 4 op to get me right but he caused it. I’ve left messages here. My hip revision a year and half ago is now dreadful, the bone has gone around the ball and socket and the femur. Mmh I’ve only had 3 injections. I can’t have another hip! Was it Prolia, I wonder!
@@roslynewatt9233 I truly believe these terrible things have occurred because of Prolia. My own experience has proven that to me. I hope that it's not too late for my bones and muscles. I’m 67 and I’ve been on prolia 4 years (2 years of forteo prolia) and have developed bone and jaw pain. I have Osteo arthritis in my joints. Prolia is the only prescription drug I take. I have got to get off it. My GP doesn’t know what to do. I also have stomache and esophageal issues.
Please ask your doctor to refer you to an endocrinologist who specialises in osteoporosis and long term management. Local doctors do not have the knowledge of this complex issue.
How do we win. I was paying 1200.00 for six month on Prolia which with Medicare paying so much more puts you in the donut hole and you must pay starting May to end of year an high amount that I can afford. Plus they had me on 2000. Calcium with prolia tat went into my blood artery aorta and caused anorism. Now I got a call from doctor to go back on something after my last one density. I’ve been off prolia for two years. Do D3,k2/m7 and magnesium. I am 83. I need advise. I have to go get auorism test to see if it’s getting worse. It is above normal size already.
I know how bad these drugs are first hand. My only thought was that you had this doctor on so that people would read between the lines and ask questions and never take Prolia or any of the drugs like it! This doctor is just like all the others. No regard for patient safety.@@margaretmartinpt
I only had one shot of prolia and decided to stop it. Does that mean I have to take bisphosphonates? I refuse to take anymore medications they make me feel sick. Please help I need your advice. Thank you kindly.
I can't offer any useful help but please see my posting under @anmato11. If you are severely osteoporotic, seek help from a function doctor if you can afford it.
Correct. That is why starting Prolia at an earlier age in your 50s, 60s and even early 70s is not ideal because you’d be on them for more than a decade if you live into your 80s or 90s, and being on it over 10 years has some serious side effects.
I was having Prolia injections twi ce a year and started having a reaction so had to stop. I am now taking a tablet called Actonel my bone density is not as good. Please comment. I'm 88 yrs old. let
I am 83 noq have had osteopeosis for 30 was doing ok Doctor insistes i take prolia on the third one got terrible pain in my fermurs then a sore mouth which put me in hospital iam off it and on bone vitamines always in pain i would warn people do not take prolia it ruined my life Ann
I was on ProLia because I am a type 1 diabetic and have the rare side effects of man made drugs and took ProLia for 2 years and I had no real side effects since stopping but my Dr wants to do a bone density test in a few months and I previously had a-vascular necrosis in my left hip and eventually had it removed when I was 49 and am 57 now have fractured my right hip at age of 55 and it still hurts sometimes and I still have pain in my left leg but because my pelvis is twisted to the left plus scoliosis in the top left side of my spine and so I am trying to get back on ProLia from my family Dr soon ..❤
Hi, I m 57, my Bmd result ostepenia, with spine L2 -2,9 , and sugested have 4 shoots PROLIA (denosumab ,not Bisphosphonate, is this diffrent ? )2 years, already have the first, and now I confuse, continue the second shoot in august ? Hope someone can suggest me...thks
Dr. Rubin tries not to keep her patients on Prolia indefinitely. Instead she tries to give them a "holiday" - meaning that they stop using Prolia (the holiday) and transition to another pharmaceutical intervention. Depending on the situation, she may put the patient back on Prolia at a later date.
@@margaretmartinpt is there any data suggesting how long the holiday should or can last and if it safely extends the time prolia can be used? Thank you for this information.
Thank you for this very informative video. One thing that wasn’t real clear to me is why a drug holiday at 10 years is being recommended, of course understanding that each person may have different circumstances. My doctor started me on it last year and has said it would be for my lifetime with no mention of a suggested 10 year limit. Thanks again for your wonderful videos.
You must go onto a bisphosphonate, usually Reclast because that works faster. The doctor should monitor you every 6 months to see if the Reclast has prevented the bone loss. If it has, then all’s good and you will then be told to take oral bisphosphonates, but if not, you need a second infusion. They should do both dexa and blood turnover markers to monitor your bone loss after stopping Prolia.
I would hope your doctor is addressing the cause of such big bone loss at your age, not just giving you medication (which you need with that score). Prolia would be the preferred option with the dexa score you have, but at 57, you will face some issues as you get into your 60s if you’re still on it. I’d be seeing an endocrinologist if you can organise that.
I have been on Prolia for over 10 years I have some problems with my one leg. When I stand up there is pain on the back top and bottom back side of my leg. I have to stand and play with my foot before placing full weight on that leg. I notice that leg will not bend like my other leg. I was thinging this has been going on for long 7 + years if Prolia is the problem. Thank you for listening.
Prolia is known for causing atypical femoral fractures which can start a year or more prior to the actual fracture with aching or low-level pain in the femur. Please see your doctor immediately. You need to have x-rays/scans done.
I'm 77 years old and it's been 8 months since I had my last Prolia (I've had the injection a couple of times before the last one). I'm having problems getting the lab work and DEXA scan scheduled because of long wait lists. I'm getting very nervous about the wait, but have an appt for labs in two weeks. Of course, from there, I'm waiting for the DEXA schedule before I can have the NP give the injection. Any thoughts?
I took 2 injections. The side effects were awful. I had to miss my third injection due to an invasive dental procedure. I was not put on anything else because of an extraction and bone graft. It’s a year since I had my last injection because my mouth is still healing. That’s the problem with these drugs, you can’t plan for emergency situations that may cause you to have to get off them for things like extensive dental work. I am resisting getting back on any drug once my mouth heals.
@@janemerves7682 that is my understanding as well based on what I read, side effects are awful and I am not convinced of the benefits. For now I am doing exercise, vit D, K2 and magnesium.

Your thoughts please, on the risks of rebound effects e.g. fractures.
Thank you.
Very good explanation
PLEASE add subtitles in Spanish - so many people in South America are suffering because this drug is extremely expensive, sometimes the insurance companies do not continue giving the drug which makes people stop it. d we already know what happens if stopped with no plan.
PS the bone around my hip revision has gone, the bone in my femur has Lytic lesions…😱
I am so sorry 😢
Bless you for sharing.
The difference between exercise and drugs:
Exercise has measurable benefits and no harms.
What are the dosage on your supplements?
Sigh. I send her videos but she doesn't watch them
Would you be so kind and put down what make of products you got and at what dose please
I found your post very interesting and I hope you doing well
I’m on alendrate at present but specialist want me to on zoldronate infusion for 3 yrs I’m not happy I’m scared incase the side effects don’t go and I’m stuck with them for 12 months and also what it can do to the jaw
I want to try without but haven’t got a clue what to do
Your help will be very much appreciated by myself and others that read your post
I’m already taking calci-D 1000 along with the alendronic acid which I would love to sto taking
Last yr I had two severe wedge fractures that gave me kyphosis
Took dr 5 months to tell me because they were missed on X-ray
A Ct picked them up and stated they were present on X-ray
I was told the sim was muscular so carried on bending twisting possibly making matters worse because the pain now is terrible
Iv had to request a brace so I can get used to adjusting my posture as best as I can
Here in the uk they don’t tend to use braces unless absolutely necessary
What ? Are severe wedge fractures that have caused kyphosis not warrenty a brace until there at least healed
I’m going the vets next time I need help

Before my mama passed away, she took at least 3 injections of Prolia. Eventually she developed hip pain that couldn’t be explained. It was debilitating and we went from doctor to doctor, not understanding this could well be a side effect. At the same time, she was declining from vascular dementia. We had stopped the Prolia. She ended up in inpatient hospice care on morphine from the pain. She would grab at our clothes and beg us to help her with the pain. She lived about 2.5 more weeks.
How sad. I'm sorry.
that sounds so horrible
God bless her. 😢
I'm so sorry for your mom's suffering and your loss.
You are welcome
@Marina Harris, you can’t just stop Prolia, you could get rebound fractures. Prolia stores dead bone cells and when you stop taking it, the dead bone cells leave your body at a rapid rate. Then the chance of fractures is very high. Sounds like you have a high chance of ending up in The Prolia trap.
@@ronhef8849 Yes I have read that but I have only had the one injection so I don’t think I’m at risk. Thanks.
Thank you for a positive review. I have been on Prolia for a few years at age 69. I will continue taking it.
You're very lucky.
@@vickig7261Good luck, I suspect that you’re going to need it!
I’m due to have zoldronate infusion after being on alendrate acid for several months
Iv had two sever wedge fractures which have caused kyphosis
Ur post is now making me think
Ditch them all and try via diet
My problem is I can do much in the excersizes department with having severe emphysema
I’m suffering enough I don’t want to take the chance of suffering more because of perscribed drug which are making the pharmaceutical millions of pounds whip people suffer because of taking there meds
I wish u all the very best and hope diet and exercise alone keeps u strong and healthy

just hope you don't get that jaw disease from the shot
I have been on Prolia for over 6 years, my jaw is fine but one of my teeth broke in half and fell out.
@Margaret Martin, Please interview a materials science engineer to provide definitions of strength, density, mass, fracture toughness, etc. The focus solely on density is misleading!
Dr. Lani Simpson, 😊
It works good for me the last 5 years! My mom was so crunched over , that wasn’t for me if I can help it.
Thank you ladies for this discussion, this helps me to understand this better.
Now that you understand this drug better, are you shocked at the revelations of Prolia withdrawal?
I have had 3 injections of prolia but after the last one I'm having lots of side effects like terrible bone pain muscle weakness and I'm sorry I went on this drug. Also I wasnt told I cant come off it.
But I'm going to come off it as
My quality of life is getting poor. Why are these issues about this drug not highlighted.
I got my second shot and my dr didn’t tell me about any side effect or if I can stop using it without rebound effect ilI really want to stop it help please!

I love listening to your interviews, and especially with Dr. Rubin. She's what we all wish our doctors to be!
Thank you. Totally agree!!
Watch Margaret's interview "How Magnesium Improves Your General Health", dealing with calcium magnesium ratio and pain.
Have been using prolia for 10 yrs. feel fine..my physician is ok with me using it regularly…🇨🇦

Thank you.
What is a pellet form mean??
Probably Prolia caused the jaw issue, but at 84, maybe safer to stay on it than take a chance based on the Endocrinologist suggestion.
Amen! I sure do not feel any of these doctors are as knowledgeable as they should be concerning osteoporosis and meds.
Rubin kind of loss me at irregardless.
They are wooed by the drug companies
Yes, that's very true! Agree with you.
Love your scholarly recommendations, and nuanced approach to individual needs! Thank you so much!
Do you know if a supplement called Algae Calc in combination of Vit K, fish & lots of leafy greens will help with osteoporosis?
@@magpiegirl3783 thank you!
Eye opening episode. Thank you for this information. Could you please suggest timing for when to stop Prolia: for a
Very thin boned woman, Numerous fractures since childhood, diagnosed with osteoporosis at 52yrs old? Dr said numbers would be concerning in a 72yr old woman, but to have such bad numbers at 52 was almost unheard of. Insurance required Bisphosphonates to start but that caused problems with diverticulosis and stomach polyps.
I've been taking Prolia 5yrs now.
excellent! what is your opinion on Fosamax -- it was recommended that I take it and I see lots of different information
Same here. Not sure I’m going to take it. I’m 58.
Very informative lecture.Thank you. Question regarding Prolia: I read the drug effects your immune system making you more susceptible to infection and UTI infection. I was concerned about that since the infection is biannual.
How about incorporate cranberries into your diet?
how do these drugs affect the liver.
I am 84 and stopped it on my seventies. I take multiple d3, k2/m7 , magnesium etc. and pray to God.
The necrosis of the jaw and atypical femur fracture risk are about the same for either Prolia or bisphosphonates.
I've heard that bone density is not the same thing as bone strength???
You are 100% right. We don’t need dense bones. We need strong and flexible bones.

Dont do it , just begin weight bearing exercises

I thank you. I didn't go through it. My Dr. insisted, but I said no!

I am an osteoporosis patient for 5 years now. I took Alendra medicine for 4 years and now on a drug holiday
Last year my endocrinologist suggested for a PROLIA to be injected to me.
What are the sidd effects of prolia?
I’ve been on it for 3 years now… I’m terrified to stop but it appears I should … I’m 62…. What should I do?
I would go see my dentist first before decision. Get the small cavities filled right away before a root canal is absolutely necessary, because dentists would not do extraction if you are on prolia, even after one shot.
@@gate-gate6863 Can someone perform extraction if the person have stopped prolia shots over 6 months? , how long before its safe.

Wish she would talk about young (48) year old men and when she would chose an anabolic over Prolia
same age and i just did first injetion of prolia , since a year of fosavance treatment had zero results on me..
Find an integrative doctor, not one that has only invested in pharmaceutical drugs and knows no other way.
I was told I could take just 3 doses of Prolia, then transition to a bisphosphonate for 6 months and then stop all drugs. I would not want to be on Prolia long term due to the AFFs and also the lowering of immune system that it causes.
Same question as others - how long should this holiday be before restarting the Prolia?
Yes, and what is the reason for the "holiday" being needed? It was not explained.
I used prolia more than 10 yrs and stopped for 4 yrs. I’m having side effects. Can I start use again?

I've been on Prolia from the age of 61. I'm now 65 and have taken 9 doses so far. My bone density results show remarkable results. My doc has advised me to continue the drug. Doc says I can take it for 10 yrs. But what happens when I stop. I cannot take oral bisphonates. I get inflammation of the esophagus.
Will the yearly intravenous Zolendronic Acid help ? Is it a safe drug ?
Will the treatment close then.

Glad you like them!
Explained here: melioguide.com/medications/how-to-discontinue-prolia/
Risks factors after using for 10 years are higher..fractures etc. Best do a lot of research
What about discontinuing Forteo?
If you lose my job/health insurance, how could I continue Prolia?
Good question
Just a thought, but find out if the company that makes Prolia (I believe it’s AMGEN in the USA) offers a Patient’s Assistance Program. The physician that prescribed Prolia for you should be able to assist you in some way.
Thoracic I have three, lumbar L1, 2 (4 collapsed completely and now have bone density). I never want to take Prolia again
Why do we need to at some point stop Prolia? Why can't we just keep using it assuming no adverse side effects?
There are natural ways to fight osteoporosis. Google and make sure you get a good supplement.

Yes. You can learn about the low intensity vibration here: melioguide.com/osteoporosis-exercise-equipment/whole-body-vibration-therapy/
It means once we begin with prolia, we will never stop?
Correct. That is why starting Prolia at an earlier age in your 50s, 60s and even early 70s is not ideal because you’d be on them for more than a decade if you live into your 80s or 90s, and being on it over 10 years has some serious side effects.

She mentioned taking a holiday several times. Can you explain that please. Thank you
I would like this explained as well. I’m 71 and have been on Prolia for almost 10 years.
@@margaretgerth1067 has this drug helped you?
Thank you for this very informative video. One thing that wasn’t real clear to me is why a drug holiday at 10 years is being recommended, of course understanding that each person may have different circumstances. My doctor started me on it last year and has said it would be for my lifetime with no mention of a suggested 10 year limit. Thanks again for your wonderful videos.
But youfont tell us hiw to add top taking it
You must go onto a bisphosphonate, usually Reclast because that works faster.
I had a dexa scan which showed osteoporosis is -5.2 .I'm only 57 and am on Prolia shouldn't I be on it ?
Don’t get another injection.
