A few years ago I was contracted to fly older 737’s and 727s to the Mohave desert for destruction and reclamation of parts. As we were flying them I was looking at the logs and history of these airplanes one 727 first flew for Lufthansa in 1978 Then Piedmont Then Eastern then Amerijet first delivered in 1978. After its 40 years of service we were giving up on it . Of course due to its cycle life. It was sad. Every aircraft we flew down there was literally in perfect working condition with every system operating as they did the day they rolled out of the factory. Iv always been a sentimental person who loves history. The turn to final I would always say out loud “sorry old girl this is it”. And the other crew members in the FD all whispered up yep this is it. Very very sad. After we landed I touched the skin of these planes that hauled millions of miles safely and would say “Thank you old friend it’s your time to rest” These airplanes are not just another piece of machinery. They have true soul. Money and hours were good flying them down but I was a bit heart wrenching.
F Grau 737 What a beautiful story. I can feel your sensations. We do grow attached to specialized equipment. Some man-made iron feels far more personal than just a moneymaker.
19 years ago I worked on the 747-400ER installing the interior of that aircraft in the factory in Everett Washington. It is sad to see that the queen of the sky is retiring from service and I can say so long 747 and may your time be remembered as it should. The 747-400ER was always a special aircraft and had special features over the standard 747-400 as it had a interior more like the 777-200ER then the other 747's. I retired in 2017 from Boeing after almost 30 years there and it brings back the flood of memories working on all the aircraft that I worked on going into retirement. Edit: I should clarify that Qantas was the only airline that ordered and took delivery of the 747-400ER.
From my perspective I do feel like it is an upsetting time that Qantas will be retiring the 747s. 747s have changed not only Qantas but the whole Airline industry. Qantas is saying Goodbye to the Queen of the skies. Farewell.😞👋👏 R.I.P Loved by all Qantas 747s 1989-2020
The 747 was the first and only plane I've ever been on from 2003 up to 2007. The reason why I decided to take engineering now that I'm in college is because of this plane but I guess I won't be working on it in the future. Farewell Queen! You'll be in my heart forever
@@BrianMui the very last time for me is back in 1999. From KUL to CPT via JHB with MH. For some lucky reason my whole family get upgraded to business. A real surreal experience. As far as I know KE and TG still keep their 747 but yeah, we don't know when we able to fly overseas again...
As sad as the Japanese Phantoms. Thank you for going through this, thank you for not turning away. The queen retires with dignity from her VIP duties - all over the world. May she grace the skies with new liveries.
What a beauty! Sadly, I was not born in an era where her Majesty the "Queen of the Skies" was everywhere in the skies. Instead, I had twin-engined 777s, Dreamliners and A350s as my travel companions. I have flown on Singapore Airlines' 747 as a kid, but not as an aviation enthusiast, but I had the privilege of flying on a Thai Airways example from my home in Singapore to Bangkok and my god it was so yesteryear inside..... Had my first Jumbo flight with Qantas in June 1973 (London to Sydney) and my last in May 2018 (Sydney to San Francisco). I’m going to miss the old girls. They may no longer be the most efficient aircraft in the skies but they were always a pleasure to fly in.
Love the ‘back in the day’ shots when the economy seats were thick and comfortable, and people wore a suit and tie to fly. That was when if you actually flew overseas the whole family would see you off at the airport, and Qantas gave you a certificate for your first crossing on the equator. Only did a couple flights then, but went to many sendoffs!
Qantas is a great airline - probably the world's best airline with actually zero accidents. Approximately 80 percent of airplane accidents are due to human error (pilots, air traffic controllers, mechanics, etc.) and 20 percent are due to machine (equipment) failures.
Oh wow, I worked at LAX right next to Quantas hangar. Sometimes 6 747s would be parked and 1 A380. Maybe it's to early but I wonder if John Travolta was there in Australia or LA for its last flight? I saw him at the A380 first flight to LAX ceremony and he flew it to San Francisco and back. Sad more 47s are being retired, definitely a end of an era...
Really? They retired this beast? Aw man I wanted to fly on one so bad. Tbh I never flown on one so this brings a lot of tears 😭not just me, but those who haven’t flown on one. Many people got their chance to fly on one but not me and the people who wanted to fly on it. Now they can’t. Big tears at my eyes. Also we will remember you forever B747. I really Wish that Quantas had waited till the Lockdowns at least, so that way they could of offered Joy Flights on their last Qantas Boeing 747, as now anybody who has never flown on a Boeing 747 will get the chance again! It would of also been nice of Qantas to retain at least one 747 for the purposes of things like Joy-flights, Charter flights and such, as seeing that the 747's where only ever used on the International flights i never got to get the chance to fly on them, as now that Qantas has Retired their last 747 no Australians will get to experience that amazement of flying on a Boeing 747 again.. really sad day for both Australians whom have never had the chance to fly on the 747 Queen of the Sky's and the Aviation enthusiasts alike!
17 September 2019 we travelled on that very plane from Johannesburg to Sydney. Reg: VH-OEJ. It was such an honour that I flew on my favourite plane. Are we allowed to be emotional about an aircraft?😢🙈
Someone start up a go fund me or something and let's get this young bird back to Aussie soil, let's have the first and last beside each other, I feel that they should be with each other.
Gosh! He doesn’t even mention the even bigger A380 hiding around the place, or did he forget there’s 12 of them still in the fleet! The American built aircraft may have been retired, but the much newer European airframes still have quite some earning to do for the carrier to justify the investment in them one would have thought....

For sure she deserves to be retired but for sure there is nothing around with the same Queen’s beauty and soul.

It’s crazy.....all the carriers are retiring their 747’s. What are we going to do? 😪😪😪

Why Qantas 747 is end?
Because in the current day and age they're not nearly as economical to run as newer aircraft such as the 787. - TB
