The Airbus a380 is simultaneously a miraculous airliner and an absolute dud. It’s certainly impressive - as the world’s largest commercial jet, it carries over 500 passengers with ease in a unique double-decker configuration. But at the same time, most airlines that own the jet have bemoaned its unreliability and suspect operating economics.
However, there is one airline has become synonymous with the a380 and has consistently sung its praises. That airline is Emirates, the flag carrier for a small middle east country that’s seen a meteoric rise to become a global juggernaut. It is by far and away the largest operator of the a380, and it’s widely believed that it’s the only airline to consistently turn a profit using the jet. But what exactly is Emirates doing differently that ensures its a380s are an asset, rather than a liability? Let me explain…

I dunno maybe if you compare to tiny planes on short routes, but much less gap in comfort when compared to other long haul planes of half decent airline. I've flown it 6 times & its just kinda ok? Less noise was only standout & Emirates service (but that doesn't count). Also for some reason I've experienced the most turbulence on A380s sometimes rather rough which was odd. On the whole good, but nowhere near even business class.

Having flown on both the A380 and the 787 a couple of times I was really shocked at how noisy the 787 was. The windows were also really annoying, in bright sunlight they don't block out the light enough for me to sleep easily. I suspect anyone comparing the two and finding the noise levels similar is comparing different positions in the plane, the front is always considerably quieter so the front of a 787 might closely compare with the back of an A380. Studies into the two aircraft found the 787 to be around 6dB louder on average, which actually equates to being perceived as over 25% louder.

Since then have flown London to Hong Kong - again on BA - and loved the plane. However its more for what it stood for as it's such a beast of a plane. On the long-haul route, it was quiet and relaxing but still prefer the b787 and the a350 for overall comfort. And of course, the b747 will always be the Queen of the Skies. Having said that, much like the Jumbo, it will be a sad day when we no longer see this plane at our airports and in the skies.

Actually Coby talked about average occupancy factor of Emirates versus that of world average (77 and 82%). I think Emirates uses A380 only on the routes where it knows it will be able to sell enough tickets to fill up or nearly fill up the gigantic aircraft. Emirates has no shortage of 777s and is not compelled to operate A380 everywhere all the time. I have seen a number of A380s between Dubai and Heathrow operating everyday. Likewise for other major hubs as Frankfurt, etc. So, I would tend to think that Emirates gets occupancy of more than 77% on many of its A380 routes.

The UAE put tons of money into Emirates because they wanted to diversify beyond oil to become a financial and trade center of the region and world. And they largely succeeded in that effort. Not everything Middle Eastern is Shariah and not everything Shariah is Middle Eastern.

The engines are barely audible (baring in mind i was on the lower deck next to the window) it was a very smooth ride and the aircraft felt very refreshing and new . The mood lighting was amazing and when they turn off the lights , there are little star projections on the ceiling of the aircraft which makes it very cool . It's very quiet in economy on the lower deck and i must imagine it is a dream to be n the top deck and probably even quieter . I love the aircraft !!

With Lufthansa in 2017, from Frankfurt to Shanghai at the business class and also the route back. What is impressive from the inside is the very low stall speed when taking off and landing and also the very low feeling of the atack angle of the plane (some airplanes you can see the difference when looking something far). The camera on the top of vertical stabilizer is amazing to see during takeoffs and landings.
