  • The Boeing 747, or the Queen of the Skies as the type is affectionately known, has become an icon of the aviation industry over the last half a century. Despite being much loved by passengers, the inferior economics of four engines has meant that most remaining passenger operators have said goodbye to the type…

The reason for the 1 hour Thai flights between Phuket and Bangkok is that during the busiest tourist period there were direct flights from many European cities to Phuket. Then they went to Bangkok on their second leg. Normally only Bangkok is served with direct flights from far away cities. I saw 2 Thai B747-400s in Phuket in 2019.

My first ever flight was with Lufthansa 747-200B in November 1973 from Frankfurt to Chicago. Ever since, I have ridden all passenger variations except 747SP (-100, -200B, -300, -400, and -8i). My mum is only one in our family to have flown with 747SP. She was so accustomed to the full length of 747 and found 747SP so bizarre.

@@JAMESWUERTELE Amazingly quiet and less bouncy as compared to -400 and older variations. The new wing design similar to 787 made the huge difference. The bouncy rides-characteristics of the "flappy wings" on -100 through -400-during the turbulences were more or less eliminated from -8i. In the past, I could hardly sleep on the eastbound flights from the US to Europe due to the turbulences, but on -8i, I felt nothing and slept soundly until it was time to wake up for the breakfast and arrival.

"Lufthansa : 8 (will be retired in 2025)" It's 7, not 8, but close enough. That depends on when Boeing gets the 777-9 certified and ready for the revenue service in 2025 along with the production start. Lufthansa "might" take four to six white-tailed 777-300 at deeply discount price that were already built but not taken by the customers.

The temporary nature of some of these things only adds to their beauty. The writing has been on the wall for the (passenger) 747 for many years now, its just sad to see it fade away. I flew the KLM 747-400s three times between LAX and AMS, in 2010, 2014, and 2019. We specifically chose the type because they have a Economy Plus section in the front of the cabin that has one row with 2 seats. That way my wife and I do not have to deal with any other passengers..... Yes, they are a bit older, but my iPad was loaded with movies and lasted for the entire flight of 11 hours. By 2019 we already knew it was going to be our last flight on the Boeing 747, as they were already phasing them out at the time and they would all be retired before 2022..... the pandemic forced the decision to retire them early, and 2020 saw KLM's final 747 flight. I am glad I had the opportunity to fly the Queen of the Skies several times, and am sad to see it go. But time moves on.... and two-engine models such as the 777 and 787 are much more efficient.
