Are rhubarb leaves poisonous? Rhubarb leaves contain a couple of different chemicals which are unfortunately toxic to both humans and animals. While you'd have to eat quite a few to become ill, it's still best to steer clear of them

@@dandangler8815 yes they are poisonous but the chickens ate them without any ill side affects, possibly birds have a different metabolism which makes them immune to what ever is in the rhubarb leaves.

After a lifetime of puppies, I can't emphasize enough how important it is to talk to them. They learn words and actions attached to those words so much more than I thought when I had my first puppy. Things like "Where is Sawyer?"; "bring the ball"; "find the boys." It's amazing to me that they then can figure out "Bring the boys" and off Obi goes to bring the boys to you. Such a lovely little trio they are.

Idea about keeping the puppy out of the chickens coop.😊 Take a roll of 24in wide roll of chicken wire and roll out on the ground with part on the ground the other side up the outside of the coop. Then either lay gravel over it or dirt. The other part wire it to the bottom of coop. At the door lay some large flagstone under the gate. Animals do not like to dig at the wire it doesn't feel good under their feet.

One trick to keep a dog from digging a hole under your chicken gate, is to bury dog poop under the gate and dirt. Just dig a trench about 4 inches deep. Put 3 inches of poop in the trench and about 1 inch of fresh dirt as a topper.

The new Olive tree arriving is great news, but I think even better is that those poor trees that you rescued from the forest are clearly just so happy to have sunlight once more!

I cannot EVEN with Sawyer walking with his hands behind his back 😂😂 no telling where he picked that up! Regarding the chickpeas, if planting them out this year doesn’t work, you may want to consider starting them in peat pots next year. They can be planted in their pots. So, no root disturbance.

To spread out your harvests separate your seeds into thirds. plant each third about two weeks apart. Less planting all at once, less harvesting all at once, prolonged fresh produce. Also try peat, manure or even recycled newspaper pots to start seedlings. You can plant the whole thing in the ground without disturbing the roots and the "pots" will decompose adding nutrients while the roots will grow right through as they get stronger.

I have a nice rhubarb sorbet recipe. Cut up 2 cups of rhubarb and cover it with a half cup of suger. Let it sit for a couple of hours and it draws out the water from the rhubarb. Cook rhubarb sugar and water mixture on low heat until it is mushy and starts to thicken. Add 1 Tbsp of lemon juice and additional sugar to taste. Rhubarb can be very tart or slightly sweet so sugar is subjective. Let mixture cool. Once cooled churn in ice cream maker until creamy. The ice cream maker breaks down the rhubarb fibers and makes a lovely creamy sorbet that tastes like it has dairy in it but it does not.

I recycled some large glass jar with sealed lids, labelled them spring- veg, spring - flowers, autumn- veg, autumn- flowers... you get the drift. And them popped them in accordingly! When it's time to grow , grab a jar and sow! Store them in a cool place away from light. It looks good & works so well 😊 happy gardening ❤

Seeing you struggle with bringing the glass doors up to their spot brought back memories of us doing the same. Only to later find out you can remove the heavy double paned glass doors and carry the frame and doors separately. If we had known, it would have been so much easier to do the job. Love seeing your creativity with the new addition to your home.

I bought three rhubarb plants last year, just the same size as yours, and was told I could fertilize it with chicken manure (slightly aged) and it would be okay "because rhubarb is okay with 'hot' fertilizer". I did. And they grew amazingly! They have come back just slightly larger this year, so I will be using the chicken manure again.
I hope yours does really well for you!
Love watching Obi digging and running around after you all. He is an adorable addition! 😍

"Olive" you guys and the way you live! I suppose many many of us allow ourselves to live vicariously through you perhaps, but only in that we choose to spend an hour watching you do your thing and marvelling at it rather than chilling out with some mindless drivel like a sitcom on tv like we might have done in times past after a hard days work. For my part I am inspired by your work ethic, your character and your parenting, and it makes me want to continue to improve myself, the way I care for my home, my garden, my grandchildren, my neighbors, and yes, my own body. God continue to bless you as you have been both blessed AND a blessing to all those around you and who watch your adventure unfold.

I strongly suggest using some wire around the rhubarb to protect it. Murphy a law is that 50 tomato plants won’t be touched, but the single rhubarb you care about will be a magnet for chickens, puppies and kids!

It is good that you hopefully planted the rhubarb away from the chickens immediate browsing area. If you didn’t know, the leaves of rhubarb are extremely toxic and almost instantly lethal to chickens. The stalks are fine though so just something to be aware of.

Good morning Tara, John, Caruso, Sawyer and Obi!
I'm of the opinion you can never have too many tomatoes. They are just so useful! Chickpeas, on the other hand, are only good for hummus. (Slight prejudice)
Sawyer, walking with his hands behind his back, reminds me of my 87 year old uncle who used to walk everywhere the same way. Very cute. Obi is adorable. How did it go with the chickens?
    Blessed Be!

Another super Sunday out with the Newbys including their own black and white digger. Gaining such adoration for the ancient olive trees. It’s good to see boys pitching in, learning the ‘ropes’. Digging and “No Digging!” might be a big learning curve though those dogs have great potential for following directions. Joel getting the business from the dynamic duo sounds like brotherly rivalry. You all are blessed and a blessing. Thanks again for sharing the wonderful life.

Hahaha I know the seed addiction well! This year I promised I would not buy anymore. I had 6 boxes full of seeds. I must confess I did buy a few Squash seeds as the first lot got eaten by a mouse and so did the peas. I also bought a few flower seeds. My two small greenhouses are overflowing!!!! Why did I do it ???? But...just think of all the beautiful blooms. I loved the way Sawyer walked after Crusoe with his arms behind his back, so very cute. Sending love to all and big kisses for Obi xx

Great news about the new tree. I agree that saying 'no' to a plant really isn't an option (or packets of seeds).
Those three boys (counting Obi) never wear thin. Sawyer with his purposful walk and that moment when there was suddenly a view of the sky - then a puppy nose sniffing (so funny) were the sort of things you don't get anywhere else.

Hi family, such a great episode. The farm is looking beautiful and your weather is amazing.. May I make a suggestion? Put stickers on your glass doors to avoid anyone walking into the glass, especially at the bottom for your little beans. I stuck beautiful 3 dimensional butterflies on mine and it looks lovely. Sawyer walking with his hands behind his back, just warmed my heavy. Cuteness overload. I'm very very excited to see if and when you get the amazing olive tree 🌳 Looking forward to that episode.❤

Oh how lovely, you will have the beautiful tree you fell in love with, in pride of place - the middle of the circle!! Hope all that was planted grows well, I am just now starting to plant rooted bulbs, sweetpeas and runner beans, salad plantings will come when it warms up. It is still cold here in central Alberta, Canada. Enjoyed sweet Sawyer proudly ploughing his one booted way across the garden. Obi and Crusoe are bonding well and delightful to watch. Hi Newbys. It's been a while since I commented. Been busy in my garden also. We just received 3 chicken, they are 3 weeks old. We are very excited!! Although in researching what chicken can and cannot eat, I came across that rhubarb is toxic to chickens.
No, rhubarb is not good for chickens because its leaves contain oxalic acid, which is toxic to chickens. Oxalic acid can cause jaundice, tremors, increased salivation, and liver damage. Frost-damaged rhubarb may have a higher concentration of oxalic acid, which is especially toxic to chickens. Just a FYI..
I suppose if you plant them where your chickens don't roam, then you should be fine
