I don't understand why so many people are hating on Max. I think he's doing a pretty great job with the material he has to work with. I haven't really found any of the things so far very interesting in and of themselves, but I come back for more because of his interactions with the guests.

I've been straight razor shaving for a while, and all of the sources I've dealt with have suggested three passes for the closest shave- with the grain, across the grain, then against the grain for finishing.
Personally I find that my skin feels softer since using the straight razor- though this could have more to do with the higher quality shaving lather I use.

The long solid body 'cut-throat' razor that needs stropping (sharpening on a piece of leather) is different to the one a barber will use today. The one that Kevin was using has a replaceable blade that inserts into the body. This ensures that time isn't wasted on stropping, the blade will always be sharp and hygiene standards are maintained. Do a search for double edge blades, the same as you would for a safety razor (you snap it in half for your straight edge).

I tried to get into straight razor shaving over a year ago.I both top of the line razor for $175, $60 badger brush (im allergic to), $70 strop, Strop paste, Shaving cream/bowl, etc... He is using a Feathered straight razor where you replace the blades. If you use a regular straight razor you have to know how to sharpen/ hone/ and strop it. I cant get my razor sharp enough to shave so I suggest replaceable straight razor blades (very cheap) so you don't have to sharpen and expect 20+ min a shave.

About 15 years ago had to grow a beard for a part in a play and Lord, did I hate it! (Seriously, beard fans, how do you tolerate the non-stop itchiness?) So to celebrate the end of the run I had my barber shave it off with a straight-edge razor. Could not BELIEVE the difference between a straight-edge and the usual disposable-blade shave! Smoother than the proverbial baby's butt--and didn't need to shave again for three days. Definitely worth it.

It's really hard to cut yourself unless you swipe it sideways. It can be a little awkward to hold and shave yourself with a straight razor, at least I found it was. I use a safety razor and get a shave ten times better than I ever got with cartridges. Blades are also about 10c each, too, so after the initial outlay for the handle it's incredibly cheap.
