What a lovely piece of work. Thank you for sharing how to do all the different stitches. I have never used chain stitch as a filling stitch, but it looks wonderful.
Rice bags for around the world - why not? Indian imagery is so rich, we could spend a lifetime and beyond, just exploring. Elephants are especially compelling and would join us in bugling your beautiful work, K3N. You put so much into these precious objects and sharing it all so pleasantly. Hope your days are brighter by the hour.
I love this project. I was looking at Indian motifs yesterday - thinking about using the elephant. How wonderful. I have been watching Pam Holland who is a textile artist based in Australia who uses a variety of painting techniques and she travels to India and is influenced by that style. I’m in my 70s and enjoying slow stitch as opposed to using a machine. You mentioned Tulip embroidery needles on a previous video, so I ordered some on Amazon US. I love them! Thank you for sharing the instructions on how to do the different stitches. I’ve been sewing since I was 8 yo, but all machine stitching so I’m at ground zero on slow stitching.
Marvelous beauties the Elephants. Love all the stitching, thank so much for all the details that went into them. This was wonderful to see all of the processes. What a wonderful insight into these designs. Can not wait until the finish bag. Bravo to you. Keep up all the wonderful ideas.
Thank you for sharing this wonderful "Elephant's " design for a new rice bag. I love it❤ I collected Elephant's since 1974 when I lived in Hawaii where I found they were good luck when trunk was up and place trunk toward door. I have quite a collection from all the years..of all types. So this is very close to my heart.❤
Thank you so much for sharing your incredibly beautiful elephants! Your thoughtfulness and generosity continue to inspire me! In fact I couldn’t resist watching before sleep and got so inspired I spent 3 hours afterwards in blissful mental stitch wandering and planning! Who needs sleep! What a treasure you’re creating ❤ again❤❤
Thank you, Katherine, really lovely. Also perfect timing, as I am making an elephant wallhanging from beautiful Indian silks my friend gave me about 20 years ago. For some reason, I thought the silk would be very difficult to applique, but it's not at all. The colours are jewel shades, so lush, and she gave me shisha mirrors at the same time. Now I know how to apply them! You are such an inspiration! From a windy Northumberland. Xxxx
Your charming elephants are delightful, and I plan on making at least one, maybe for a pillow top. This will take me an extra specially long time, but it will be fun. Looking forward to seeing the finished rice bag.
I love it 🐘! I immediately thought of my mother: she loved Indian things and elephants 🐘 It’s going to look absolutely fabulous! In fact, it’s fabulous already 👏🏻👏🏻🐘🐘🐘🐘💜🧡💛❤️💙🩶🩷🤎💚♥️🩵
Yes, I’m so excited for this. I made one rice bag and gave it as a gift to my daughter-in-law, and her mother saw it and asked for one so I’ve been trying to gear up to make another. Perfect timing for me, though I’m so much slower than you, probably won’t finish anywhere near the same time. 😅 I’m also in the middle of knitting socks using your tutorial videos. I have knitted socks before, but never seem to get it quite right. Maybe this time will be the charm!
Thank you enjoying my cuppa coffee with you this morning, I found the wonky Wednesday segment today very interesting and very time-consuming. I think up with this one on my list for later. Have a great day.
Thanks Kathryn. I am very keen to get started. Last week I was spending time with my 15 year old grand daughter who loves op shopping and I actually picked up a pair of cushion covers which had originated from India. I will give one to a sewing buddy who is following along with you too. The covers have elephants embroidered on them using chains stitches and sequins. The outline chain stitches use a fine gold wire like thread. If I tried I may be able to trace off the actual elephant and shrink it back....I will give it some thought...I love how my cushion cover elephants ....it is almost like our thoughts are channelling. Have fun at your exhibition. Hugs
That sounds great Maureen. There is an Indian embroidery technique using a little hook to pull thread through instead of a needle. Maybe your wire embroidery was done like that ❤️
Thank you for the detailed look at that open ladder chain stitch. I had a lot of trouble with it before because I just couldn’t see how it was working. For some reason now I see it as “delayed gratification.” It doesn’t look like it should work, but it does! 🤪. The elephants are wonderful but I think I want to look for some camel images( my favorite animal). I’m just having trouble keeping up with all my projects……
Glad it was helpful. I also found how to zoom in sections of the video in my editing program so the stitching parts can be closer, I hope it looks ok. Camels will be fabulous ❤️
Beautiful piece of work. I'm catching up on videos since I've been away from internet for a few days. I love the sound of your clock in the background, it reminds me of the clock in my pop's old farm house I used to visit at a child.
Oh my goodness Kathryn this is really stunning. Thank you so much for sharing so many stitches and techniques. My daughter loves elephants so I shall be giving this a try but in a simpler form. Lol 😊❤❤
There used to be a saying but I don't think it would be PC now. How do you eat an elephant? Answer: one bite at a time. Thanks for taking us through this project step by step Kathryn. Beautiful elephants, the bag will be magnificent.
I love this project. Your work is amazing. I had also been wondering if you could do a Chinese thread book. I like to make them out of paper but there must be a way to make them from cloth as well. If anyone might know, it would be you. Thank you and know you are being prayed for and cared for by many.
Thank you so much, I have seen them made from cloth by an ex colleague in my textile art group though I have never made one myself, but I would be happy to give it a go one day 😁❤️
The Mrs. Elephants are beautiful! I just requested a book from my library called Beasts of India which shows the animals "rendered by a variety of folk and tribal artists." I will have lots of fun imagining possible future projects like your elephant.
What a wonderful project. Your embroidery work is just beautiful. I enjoyed this video. I also never considered whether precision patchwork was the result of all the ruler and rotary cutter technology or was created to address that (supposed need.) What an interesting question.
Wow! This project is stunning and enjoyed your descriptions of the embroidery stitches. I have found an Indian elephant wooden printing block on-line but not sure if it will be too small, can you please let me know the size of your block, Kathryn. Thank you. Sue.
Ohh so nice , wow the embroidery is beautiful. I hope one day I will be able to do a small piece like that. I have just tried to do a hexagon snowman 😢disastrous his face is not flat & my circles for eyes, buttons and mouth 😢
Hiya 🌞, IMO, & sight unseen, your hexie snowman might just be melting a little?😊;- my first unicorn was definitely "a disastrous wonky" one but was claimed by master2 ( now 36!)who loved it to a friable ghost of itself! ( & according to wife is still up the back of his sock drawer!) Forgive the rant,Best wishes, Julia, Brisbane, Australia 🇦🇺 😅
Thank you, they are called shisha and can be bought. They are sewn on by stitching over the edges, no holes. I show how in one of the weekly Slowstitch Monday videos ruclips.net/video/kkHbqBUFu7g/видео.htmlsi=Nim9DRZjCsyjsdVM ♥️
@k3n.clothtales thank you so much. Wow that will be a challenge but it looks great. I assume you create a scaffold in same way for a square one? I really need to take a trip to India. Where to go? Where to buy some of these amazing things, comforter types or others. Love the pieces you can hang above doors. I'd never create something like that. They have very similar item in turkey but don't think it had mirrors. Took a picture will see mote of its details. We are currently in the US but have been planning since last year to move to Spain. I also follow Marion and communicate with her and told her once we move and settle I've got to go meet her and give her a hug! I heard it's hard to get embroidery supplies and fabric in Spain. I cannot believe it. I can always cross to France or maybe Portugal (though I have not researched on availability in Portugal). I know France has amazing flea markets with lace, fabrics, etc. Right now fabric in the US is outrageous. I refuse to buy. I follow some ladies from Australia that have gone to France shopping and I can't believe the prices. You would know that! I just caught your Enso piece. I will do one. Simple and different. Most if follow are Brits and Australians. We have family in the UK and we have visited many times, last time was early this year. I will see how i canmourchase shish or make my own. Have many Indian friends and waiting to see if they may hand down old sari or dothis or very loved old kantha comforters so I can see how i can reuse them.
I am not sure about Spain or Portugal but yes France has 'brocantes' where you can buy vintage linen and lace. I don't buy new cloth so I am not sure about prices. For the Indian pieces, there is a wonderful shop here in the West Country, Glastonbury called Dilliway and Dilliway. I was lucky to be given the shisha by a friend who has been to India but I expect you can find them on eBay or Etsy. Good luck with the move. ❤️
@k3n.clothtales thanks, will have to find my way to France after we get settled. Will research Spain availability some more. Or perhaps even Portugal. When we were there earlier this year no time to check put stores. You don't buy fabric but you do have fabric, like the ones you used for eco printing. Maybe they were gifted. I'll still need batting and anything else but i guess today ladies just order online.
The ones used for ecoprinting are all old linen and cotton, mostly given to me, some thrifted. I was gifted a bolt of silk noil 8 years ago by a friend who had a fabric shop. It's nearly gone now. Old blankets or cotton flannel are good for batting. ❤️
For some reason seeing the elephant reminded me of your lovely horse, Baldour, (they both have four legs? maybe? Sigh, my mind sometimes works in mysterious ways). I became concerned about his welfare and whereabouts? I hope he’s fine and is being well taken care of.
Yes Judith, my former farrier took both him and Raph so they have stayed together and are well looked after. It was such a relief although heartbreaking to have to give them up ❤️
It's a Japanese bag traditionally used to take offerings of rice to the temple, basically a square box with a drawstring. I made a video at the beginning of the year showing how to make one. ruclips.net/video/BSxaY6AtUqk/видео.htmlsi=t3Z-UVEh8MEjTue1 ♥️
Hiya K3n 🌞, thankyou for sharing again today😊 what caused the cut on your finger? Am doing catch up as helping son#2 to move house, the trio think its a fag and miss6 is resurrecting "lost " toys! Now she wants elephants 🐘 on everything! Good as a bribe for obedience! Happily l can cheat a little bit, havinga pair of stoles that will bulk out my elephants (she tends to acquire the rice bags for various games.) Hello Julia, busy times for you! I knocked something off the worktop while putting up shelves in my studio, went to grab it and stabbed myself with my finger nail. 🙄 It's healing fast with some magic essential oil skin balm I have. ❤️
This is so wonderful. Yet another idea to add to my ever increasing list!
Looks complicated, but as you broke it down into smaller elephant bite sizes it didn't seem so overwhelming 😊
What a lovely piece of work. Thank you for sharing how to do all the different stitches. I have never used chain stitch as a filling stitch, but it looks wonderful.
Thank you look forward to next week! 😊

Hi Kathryn, absolutely fantastic piece of work, so inspiring and thankyou for a wonderful demonstration ❤
Love elephants. Did some during lockdown,I used mainly seed stitch. I am now going to try chain stitch . Thanks💕
I am so inspired to try this now. Thank you.
