i just caught a 5lb bass (best catch of my life so far) and it was on 6lb mono on small jig head with a 1.5" twister worm...we drove 2 hours and were getting skunked all day so i switched to small setup just to catch anything and bam caught my biggest bass...really made me rethink what i know about fishing
So far some of the best advice I’ve gotten was to use smaller jigs like small Johnson beetles instead of constantly using flukes/senkos/worms or med/lrg crank baits. Smaller stuff catches everything including big bass. Way more fun.
Fun times buddy! Thanks for coming along and catching them with me. And yeah I prefer 2lb mono for the super light stuff but the heavier baits, the braid is hard to beat!
In my opinion the right choice is using braid as a main line and using fluorocarbon as a leader material. You just have to get good at tying a line to leader knot such as the FG knot, uni-to-uni knot or my favorite the Alberto knot. The leader gives you the low line visibility to the fish and fluorocarbon line also sinks much better than braid which helps with ultralight line and lures, and the way fluorocarbon stretches makes hook setting better than monofilament. The braided mainline gives you better casting distance, higher line visibility, more sensitivity, and no line stretch which also means better hook sets. The only crucial part is getting good at tying line to leader knots, but once you get that down then this is IMO the best way to go
Thoroughly appreciate all the videos man! Just got started with BFS/Ultralight fishing out in SE Michigan this year and you, rawr, and Hobie Wan have all been massively helpful!
Awesome! So happy to hear that you have been enjoying the content and having fun with UL/BFS. Hobie Wan and Rawr are both good dudes - thanks for supporting all three of us :)
I've been ultralight fishing since the 1970s and the gear certainly has changed. When I got seriously involved it was mostly to pursue high-mountain trout in lakes and streams, plus I'm a bit of a techie engineer. My go-to rigs today are imported Daiwa and Shimano finesse reels on light and UL rods or fly-rod hybrids. My favorite rod is best described as a "fast" fly rod blank made up like a spinning rod. Nothing beats an effortless 1000-size reel with "infinite" drag; but there's no market for them in the US so they have to be imported from Japan or Australia. Regarding lines, I settled on 4-lb and 6-lb monofilament (Spiderwire) and 4-lb and 3-lb Berkeley Nanofil as on my UL spools. It's not unusual for neighboring anglers to ask me what I'm using because my casts appear long and effortless. Some of it's the line but also pairing the rods, reels and baits for best performance. My favorite trout rig is fly-and-bubble (either dry fly or nymph) although a hopper-dropper rig is perfect for stream fishing. NOTE: Users report problems with Nanofil (breakage, etc.). Somehow I don't have the problems with Nanofil, probably because I always use leaders and am gentle with set-ups. Best day ever was a 100+ day on a mountain lake with my SO and some friends, so many trout we honestly lost count after 40+ each. It seemed like every other cast got a hookset.
Right on. Sounds like you are an ultralight addict like me :) Nanofil is a very unique line. I tend to have a love-hate relationship with it. I don't personally like the "wirey" feel that leads to a lot of memory on a slow sinking presentation. I do love the super low diameter and castability though.
Nanofil is my mainline of choice as well but it’s my understanding that It’s been discontinued so now I’m trying Fireline which is nice but not the same. Maybe I need to size down (from 6lb to 2lb). I also like using a bubble and fly rig, I’m curious what your preferred bubble is with your UL setup. I e found most to be pretty heavy for UL rods
Dude it took me forever and a day to figure out what works best for me and it's trilene in a red box. This is good information to know for beginner's!!!
Honestly the basic stuff gets overlooked. Simply can't go wrong with a simple ol' spool of trilene! I like the sensation because it has given me very few issues but I think the standard red box is great too.
Yeah I tried Spiderwire and it is garbage haha the Fireline is pretty dope. Might have to try the 4# at some point to see if I can get some more casting distance.
Thanks Fitzy haha I try to make them seem fun because, well... I am having fun :D And yeah I have been meaning to do this video for a long time. Glad I finally got it done!
I ordered this to net the algae in a large pond in our backyard. ruclips.net/user/postUgkxphFK7ETiDP5G4IGsNcg7vbASDp_YfDpI The net is very sturdy and easy to maneuver in the water. The angled edges make it easier to get into the smaller spaces among the rocks. I didn't realize that the front of the net doesn't actually have a frame to it, just the sides do, but it seems to work just fine. The handle extends to various sizes, which is a great feature when I'm in areas that are tight with shrubs at the edges of the pond. I can collapse the handle so it doesn't get stuck in the bushes.
For trout fishing, I go straight Fluorocarbon. After using many brands, my choice is 4LB Kastking FluoroKote. Since I switched to Kastking I never have problems with wind knots or bird nests.
Interesting! Thanks for sharing! I like straight fluorocarbon but I honestly feel like mono has given me less issues. Probably need to experiment with brands more.
Mono is the one I like for years with no problem I can't see 2 lbs no more so I've been getting 4 lbs line for stocking the fish. I like colors is easy for me to see moving. I like bait fishing and sit and relax. And wach the grandkids great times.
Another fun and informative outing. Must say I prefer braid with a fluoro leader for just about anything. I don't see any reason to go lower than 6 pounds for the braid, since it's going to be thinner than 2-pound mono. But if you want a fair casting-distance contest (pound for pound) you have to go right down to 2-pound braid, which is so thin it barely exists. I've had fewer tangles and handling hassles with braid than with mono. I don't use fluoro for anything but leader material, and that helps keep me happy.
Yeah I am nervous to go any lower than 6lb test braid because I fear it will get a ton of wind knots and tangles. That said, I am sure it would absolutely TOSS a tiny jig. Maybe I will experiment with it soon :D Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts Jim. Tight lines my man!
I used 8lb braid with a 4 lb mono leader today and measured a 45 foot cast with a 1/64 oz trout magnet jig head. I'm now looking to downsize to 4 or 5 lb braid. Using a Daiwa Presso.
I love berkley 4lb nanofil or fireline for ultralight jig fishing. I can toss a 1/64oz. Jig 40-50’ in light wind conditions with my St. Croix 6’9” ul panfish rod with a 1000 sized Daiwa reel . Also, I really like how sensitive the line is. I’ve recently realized that the better balanced my tackle is the more successful my fishing has been.
For example, I recently went Crappie fishing and was catching way more fish than the other just because I could detect the bite better than the others around me. The Crappies were biting extremely lightly. I came home with a limit of fish. I recently read an article on In-Fisfermen about euro style floats, so I bought a few and let me say I sure paid off.
Yeah I also like Nanofil & the fireline! Nanofil is so weird though haha it feels like dental floss or something. I will keep experimenting with numerous types of line for sure.
It goes onto the reel in the same direction it comes off the spool. That's the key to mono. No more twists etc. I've been fishing with my ultralights since my early teens which is about 25years. Usually 6lb line mono is what I use. The reels I have are Shimano 500,750 spin cast. I've broken 3-4 rods, and never lost a fish die to mono. After 6-7 fish I always cut 10 inches off and retie.
'Ride or Die with one setup', love it man! Those Donkey Tail Jr. Chartreuse w/a Pink Head are my go-to's thus far, been killing the Crappie, Gills & Bass on em. And your Jig Heads are killer. Great Video & thanks for making a great Product!
Good video. I purchased my first ultra light spinning combo. And I am switching the mono with braid. I had trouble casting far. And i think the braid will definitely help.
Love your passion . Great video , you reignited my love for ultralight trout fishing 2lb nightmare to tie fun. You sparked my hunt for secret urban honey hole madness. Chucking a float and twitch bass rapala into snapping turtle rich environment see what hits.
Great video, lots of excellent info about the pros and cons of each type of line. I personally like using braided line with mono for leader. I think an important thing to note about braid is that one spool-up will last you all year and then some. When I use mono it seems like it needs to be replaced every couple weeks, it gets brittle and coiled up and line management gets annoying. Braid took some getting used to but once you do I rarely get loops or tangles, and it just lays flat in the water no matter how long its been on the spool. My ultralight has been spooled up with 10lb Sufix Performance since the beginning of last year and still going strong. Power Pro has been a let down in comparison - knots slip, more tangles, seems to fray more in less time. Although I've also had them both spooled up for the same amount of time, so that's the difference versus mono/fluoro to me is that braid just last forever in comparison.
Okay that is a superb point. Totally forgot to talk about the fact that braid can be fished for years on end haha. I honestly fished the same 10lb braid on one of my reels for almost 8 years lol. Mono in super low diameters tends not to last more than half a season. Thanks for sharing Evan!
@@FishAnything Wow 8 years is nuts but I don't doubt it can last that long. Glad to be part of the discussion, it's an important factor for me for sure. I was scared of the braided price tags at first, but it's an investment considering how much longer it lasts it's actually much cheaper and easier in the long run.
Thanks to your content I’ve been getting pretty invested into ultralight fishing, for my trout setups and some of the larger ultralight setups I use 6lb Copolymer. I wish you could have demonstrated it because I feel like it is a very good middle of the road between mono and fluro but to each their own. I use larger line because one minute it’s a dink bluegill, next could be a 24in smallmouth. I’ve caught huge bass on 6lb no issues, I usually do better ultralight than full-size baits. Probably because of fishing pressure but funny to note
Thank you for sharing! Probably should have talked about this. Good news is that I can always do another video :) so I definitely appreciate the suggestion. I will try some out!
🤠 When I'm fishing in these small streams, creeks and canals, most definitely I like to use 8 pound test extra tough super strong clear line. Mostly I just fish for trout, crappies, perch and panfish. Well once in awhile I will catch a smallmouth bass, here and there. Great review and great video.
I decided to try the trilene sensation, clear color in 2lb and 4lb test. Also got 2lb SOS that was the recommended to use with panfish magnets. It will be interesting to see how it does this season. FYI, for those with eyes over 50years old, that 2lb line is hard to see, lol! At least when I was putting 6lb mono on my other reel it felt like a was using rope, lol! If I stay with 2lb mono I may have to use some hi-viz just so I can see it to tie lures!
Yeah the light lines can be super painful to see and rig but they also can make a huge impact with casting distance and bites. Let me know how it goes with the sensation vs the SOS
I fish a lot and personally I like Lelands SOS trout monofilament in 2 and 4lb test its super limp lays flat and strong. I like it so well I bought a 7000 yard spool in 4lb test. In the spring time when the white bass run is on I use Onyx braid in yellow or the green color in 6lb test. As far as braid goes I like it and both these lines are very affordable. 👍
Just bought some SOS trout line today at my local Walmart. I was seriously debating if I should have gotten 2lb or 4lb test, but opted 4lb to pull through weeds easier.
@@christopherdelcastillo0077 I think you will like it. My WM use to sell it but no longer does. I pick it up at BPS for about 5.00 per spool. I fish a pond for crappie that has no structure or wood to hang up in with 2lb it works great and will cast a light jig a mile. When it comes down to it I really dislike most all braid I have tried but I do like the Onyx braid in 6lb green its cheap too Amazon. Try it you may like it also.
I love 10lb braid on a 6lb leader, it's nice to still have good castability without decreasing strength. Ive heard stories down at the Bridge I fish about people catching 30+lb Flatheads on Crappie lures, just gotta keep that braid from rubbing on the Pylons or you'll break off instantly.
Daiwa 8x J-Braid Grand (6 lb) with a Sunline Fluorocarbon leader (4 lb) is absolute FIRE on my ultralight. I can throw a 1/64 jig a country mile and it's sooooo sensitive
I will have to try the J Braid in place of the Fireline and see how it performs for me. I like the Fireline but I definitely don't get the same distance as my Mono.
@@FishAnything rod and reel are also factors (how "whippy" the rod is, for instance, or how full your spool is, etc) If you try the JBraid, be sure to get the x8 Grand (they also sell "regular" x8 and an x4)
I've been using P-Line Floroclear and am very satisfied with it. Also - you mentioned your braid liked to be wet first - try a line dressing like Lew's Speed Cast (made by Lucas Oil - smells great). It slicks up braid and is also a UV protectant. Easy to use spray bottle, and I use it on spinning and bait caster reels.
Just wanna say thanks for all the great info and help! I’ve always just been a bass fisherman, but have gotten into pan fishing and creek fishing ever since your videos. I went ahead and got a TFO rod and a Daiwa revros 1000 to pair it with. My next one will probably be the sierra, or a st croix I’d like to get a good verity of options.
Really surprised to hear that you've had success with straight mono/fluoro on ultralight size reels. When I first got into UL, I almost gave up due to line memory/wind knots on UL stuff. Now it's 5lb Power Pro braid to 2 or 4lb Sensation leader for all UL/Light BFS applications.
The thing is... Everyone has their own style. For me, the sensation has very few wind knots/issues with memory. Sure, after I fish it hard for a while, I will get some tangles. But that is inevitable for such a light line. Braid is definitely solid but I just wish I could still get the distance I get with my 2lb mono.
I feel like such an amateur because I am, as I sit here with my Walmart Lew's speed stick lM 6. I did pour warm water all over the spool which helped out with the potential tangling of the line. It's not a bad little rod for a cheapy.
Thanks for this video. I had some 6 lbs braid on a 10 series reel and felt like I wasn't casting as well as I did with even mangled up fluoro on it. It's my only ultralight, and it's a 5' rod, so I expected some shorter casts but my 10 foot with 8lbs braid casts FAR further...I may just try some of that Berkley Sensation Mono on my 10 series now. :)
Good luck! I’ve also found the quality of the braid makes a big difference. J braid grand x8, Phenix iron feather, and spro finesse braid are a few I really like.
@@FishAnything I've been using Fireline on my spinning reels. I tried some others, but spinning reels don't like anything but Fireline. I think it's because they actually reach a point of too limber. Though, I really like Berkley's new X9 and X5. Both my baitcasters have Spiderwire Ultracast at the moment.
Would it be possible to get the braid rod/reel/line/lure set up you used in this video? Came across your channel as I’ve been looking into ultralight fishing and just watched a handful of your videos in a row, excellent work!
Thank you! I believe I was using my Dobyns Rod paired with a size 1000 Daiwa reel in that video. Tatula LT 1000 I want to say... I was using Fireline braid but I don't recommend that. J Braid or Spro Finesse braid are significantly better options.
Call me strange but I prefer a copolymer line for my ultralight gear. It makes up for the sensitivity issues of mono and helps with the fragility and memory issues of floro its worked well for me for the last few years
I always do 6 pound mono but now I am thinking I need to do the big switch to 4 pound. Son and I fished a heavily fished pond today. No one else was catching. We had mule jugs with donkey tail jrs and mule jigs with live worms....we were pulling them in left and right. Told everyone about your gear...even though that could make fishing tougher in the future LOL
Haha thanks so much John! Yeah I think you should give the 4# or even 2# a try if you get the chance. I think you will be happy with the added casting distance :)
Just used 6lb fireline on my president size 20. Tons of memory. I had a crazy tangle 2nd cast. Other than that it seemed okay but you got to keep you eye on it.
@@FishAnything I have been using power pro and sufix so far. I like Sufix more so far. I will try out J Braid when I get my hands on some. But the funny thing is I like mono over fluro and braid, but my confidence in braid keeps me using it.
Just spooled my ultralight setup with 4lb Berkley flouroshield. Looking forward to my next street fishing session to test it out. To bad the weather got cold again 😔
Last trout season in socal i ran 5lb phenix iron feather braid to 2lb vanish flouro and it was plenty strong. I fought a few 3lb trout with confidence, no chances at anything over the 3lb mark yet.
I use braided line with about 4meters of really stretchy mono. I fish a quite big river here where i live and long casts sometimes pay of so braided helps me cast furthe while the leader helps me to make my combo not so rigid so the fish cant un huck itself. 5kg (0.1mm) braid 3kg (0.16mm) mono I use a Uni Knot to tie the leader (never, not even once failed) + it is low profile and it goes easily through the guides.
Nice! That sounds like a similar setup that I use for my bass gear. I like braid for anything over 1/32oz but it is a bit harder to cast the super light stuff in my experience.
im using the same size braid and .18mm fluorocarbon, if you get snagged with that light of line can you ever get it out?? i went fishing with the ultralight for the first time , and most the knots were either slipping while casting or breaking as soon as i got snagged
To be honest with the ultralight setup i fish 90% topwater and i hardly never get snagged unless i cast in very risky places and it ends up in a branch or something but that is very rare... It depends where you fish, what lures you use etc etc... Where you fish might be very different from the place i fish
I have been using 4-pound fluorocarbon with an 18" leader using monofilament. It seems to work well for me. Creek fishing needs some pretty serious abrasion resistance.
@@glxbe Sorry it took me so long to respond. My modem dies and AT&T too forever to get me a new one. I use a union to swivel to union. I fish areas with a lot of downed trees and rock bottoms in small streams. I hope it helps you out. I looked at "Hey Skipper" here on YT for knot tying tips.
I never do personally just because I like a longer leader. The main disadvantage is that a swivel can't go through the guides so you limit yourself to a small leader. It is fine for certain applications but not my style for most.
I love braid to fluoro for all my bass spinning outfits. I just find that straight mono is more simple and works really well for the tiny stuff so it is my favorite for UL.
I prefer mono, mostly for something you didn't really mention. With ultralight line, I use 4#, being able to get tangles out is a big deal. Haven't really tried fluorocarbon for that. But I do like fluro for salt water leaders. I like the trilene and landed up to 17 lb fish on it Main thing, constantly check knots and eliminate nicks. Interesting part of the video you were left handed, then right handed.
I'm also a ultralight fishing fanatic I find copolymer lines to be perfect for me I'm currently doing a big line test on a bunch of copolymer lines right now my favorites are Pline fluoroclear and Gamma Poly flex
@@FishAnything gamma poly flex has a bit higher line diameter but very supple and strong line, the Pline fluroclear has thinner diameter and more stretch great casting distance
I use the lemiglas x11 trout and panfish rod with a pflueger president size number 25 with Berkley 835 braid in 8 pound test and I'd Say its one of my personal favorites for the price point not totally a budget build but for the 160 price point it's well worth that in my opinion
I'd be interested to see you revisit this and include copolymer lines, and whether you have the same opionion 2yrs later! That said, feels really weird you never brought up memory in the line? In my experience braid is worlds better than mono or fluoro because it has ZERO memory, and on tiny diameter spools like those in microfishing, no memory makes life a lot easier.
I prefer 4lb Maxima Chameleon on my UL setups. It hasn’t let me down yet. I’ve been thinking about trying micro braid with a fluoro leader though. Switch things up a bit.
I feel like mono or braid to leader is just about the only UL line to use. Flourocarbon is fine but it’s expensive and I feel like mono is as good given the stretch is minor because you have a super light hook.
1) don’t use line with too large of a diameter 2) make sure the line winds on to the reel spool the same way it was sitting on the plastic spool it came on 3) keep it tight while spooling and try to go fish it and get some resistance to get it tight to the spool. Sometimes I like to go out and cast a heavier lure and get a lot of the line wet and accustomed to the spool.
If you don't want to use braid is it better to use low diameter monofilament or fluorocarbon line? I know that monofilament can be quite stretchy, so would it better to use a low diameter fluorocarbon all the way through?
I have found that ultralight line is a bit different than higher diameters. I have found that monofilament or copolymer are much better options than fluorocarbon in these sub-6lb test varieties. The stretch seems to help with some durability whereas the fluoro feels quite brittle.
Favorite braid : power pro No wind knots with 5 lb line, cast a mile Favorite mono: maxima ultra green Doesn’t bird nest as much as cheaper mono Favorite Flouro: Yozuri pink Thin and invisible I just got the daiwa samurai for 100% fluoro
Do you like that Daiwa Samurai line? I used that same brand last year, 15lb floro for my cranking/chatterbait rod and I personally hated it. It was pretty expensive and I just thought It would be better. I literally used it for one trip and despooled and went back with Seaguar Invizx.
I actually really like it in the 2lb test. I still prefer mono because it isn't quite as brittle. But the Samurai doesn't seem to have memory and it hasn't had a single tangle. I think fluoro is weird that way though... Some fluoros, I love their light stuff but hate their heavy stuff. Some, vice versa. For bass applications, I tend to just go with Sunline and call it good.
@@FishAnything 2lb test is really hard to find right now. I try to buy from smaller places instead of Bass Pro Shops but I may have to break down and buy that Trilene from them.
8# Power Pro braid (has a 1# mono diameter) with a three foot 6-8# mono or flouro leader works for me for 1/16 or heavier. Lighter leaders lose too many baits to snags. Never could stand the way mono and flouro twist and spring off the spool. The coiling memory is bad on both too.
I used to hate straight mono or fluoro but then I started using 4lb and lower diameters and realized the memory is not very bad. If you are fishing really snaggy areas though, obviously you need a bit heavier line. I will always have setups with both braid and straight mono. Pros and cons!
Great way to do it. Braid has become my favorite after trying several brands. I like J Braid Grand x8 or Spro Finesse Braid. Super good casting distance!
@@FishAnything just put it on but haven't fished the 6 lb yet . i did fish the x9 15lb last spring and summer and it was very decent . only a few wind knots over several months and never and braid breaks but i did have my 6 and 12 lb mono leaders bread sever times from snags and bush fish on the other side of the bank ;) . i can tell you it is VERY quiet going through the guides and roller . i hate the schwschwschwschw sound PP makes , it disturbs my peace and quiet when fishing or the sound of the water . but seriously i do appreciate the difference in sound . i hope to get out later this week . the x9 6 is on a fuego lt on a TFO trout panfish with 6 lb stren mono leader . i'll start with joes flys and a swivel . i'm in the mountains of southwest va and need to get to the trout they stock around here ! take care dude :)
I notice you cast with your right hand then switch to your left to reel with your right. Have you tried switching the reel handle to the other side and reeling with your left hand??
I always run copolymer or ice fluro which has held up to even silver salmon and lake trout incidents. Never tried braid as I feel like it is a bit much for the size of gear.
Thiner line means little more to think about but if you just sett you drag acordoly it will not be a problem shore it takes abit longer to land a bigger fish but you use them gears as they was meant to ;) me my self is a fierline kinda gy you just kant go wrong whit 0,10 fierline on ultralight ^^ keep up your god work and be safe out there :)
Thanks for the video. Been ultralight fishing with 4lb test for a little over a year. Started off with monofilament. Was wondering if I should switch. I liked Trilene XL.
Thanks - glad you are liking them! And yeah braid is solid, I have really been liking the 6# that I use. I do prefer the 2lb mono if I am casting super light baits though (which I do a lot of).
That is going to be an excellent setup. I personally prefer 2lb test but if that concerns you for the waters you fish, 4lb will totally work too. It will reduce casting distance but it will obviously help you around thick cover and whatnot.
I’ve been using a ML with braid to seaguar 6lb fluoro. Decided to bite the bullet and buy an ultralight. Used 2 lb trout magnet SOS line. Finally put it to use today. It’s so light that it floats in air for quite a bit when casting. The line twist was insane. Lost a lot of line. You’re right in that light line that that is Barbie hair. Lost a few of my tungsten jig heads. Kind of worried about losing more. It was also much more difficult to tie knots with thin line. I have 6 lb mono on hand so I’m trying that out. I think if this doesn’t work, I might just go with braid to fluoro again. Is 6lb too big?
Definitely just depends on what you like to fish! If you’re using slightly heavier jigs and lures, you’ll be fine with 6lb test. But if you want to cast the really light stuff (
@@FishAnything Hey! Seriously, thanks for your great response! The 2lb casts much further than I imagined it would. I think I’ll take myself out there and see the difference with 6lb mono. If it is awful I’m leaning towards giving 4 lb a shot. Thanks for your help again and for putting out great content!
6lb - 300m PE line for my deep sea jigging in my deep spool 4lb - 100m PE line for my freshwater game in my shallow spool both with 10lb or lower FC leader...
I wonder how much of this would carry over o BFS. I can see using say 15 lb braid to the equivalent diameter flouro (what is that, 6 lb?) leader. Just me thinking out loud, I’ve never actually tried it.
I really need to get some Mule jigs and Donkey tails. Which sizes would you recommend for a light-med light setup fishing for smallies, perch and panfish?
The 1/32oz will be a workhorse for all of those. Sadly I am out of stock right now (but should be back in soon). That said, a 1/64oz can be great too, especially for the panfish. Both the DT & DTJ will work. Go small if you want more quantity. Go big if you want a bit more quality :D Thank you very much for the support!
i just caught a 5lb bass (best catch of my life so far) and it was on 6lb mono on small jig head with a 1.5" twister worm...we drove 2 hours and were getting skunked all day so i switched to small setup just to catch anything and bam caught my biggest bass...really made me rethink what i know about fishing
That is so epic! Congrats on the big bass!!
So far some of the best advice I’ve gotten was to use smaller jigs like small Johnson beetles instead of constantly using flukes/senkos/worms or med/lrg crank baits.
Smaller stuff catches everything including big bass. Way more fun.
Yeah the bitsy bug jigs murder for me in pressured water. Smaller presentation they don’t usually see has caught me some of my biggest bass.
U used any leader line?
This was such a fun day great video once again dude! I personally love floro and braid but use mono because it is cost effective as a budget angler.
Fun times buddy! Thanks for coming along and catching them with me. And yeah I prefer 2lb mono for the super light stuff but the heavier baits, the braid is hard to beat!
Nah, mono you need to replace every 3 months. One spool of braid will last a lifetime.
@@FishAnythingwhat’s the best budget friendly mono or braid? 2-4 lb test? Thanks hope to get a answer soon.
The only crucial part is getting good at tying line to leader knots, but once you get that down then this is IMO the best way to go
yes to all of this, esp the Alberto knot! I'm about to tie my first one using 4 lb braid and 2 lb fluoro.
Right on. Sounds like you are an ultralight addict like me :)
Nanofil is a very unique line.
Love that FireLine! Over the years I've used Spiderwire, Power pro, but Fireline beats them all for spinning reels. Thanks for the video. 👍
Yeah I tried Spiderwire and it is garbage haha the Fireline is pretty dope. Might have to try the 4# at some point to see if I can get some more casting distance.
Great talk about line Ethan and a fun session of UL multispecies fishing. You always make things so fun 😁
Awesome!!
6lb. Braid to 4lb floro leader for my ultralight setup. Just in case you hook a decent size one! Still casts 1/32oz. decently.
Yep! That is the same I use for most of my 1/32oz Mule Jigs. For the super light stuff, I tend to go monofilament!
I used 8lb braid with a 4 lb mono leader today and measured a 45 foot cast with a 1/64 oz trout magnet jig head. I'm now looking to downsize to 4 or 5 lb braid. Using a Daiwa Presso.
I use 6lb braid with 2lb floor on my setup.
6 pound mono or flouro to big for 1/16th oz lures?
@@hoosierbassin1621 not at all. Should be fine.
New to the channel but you have got me when you started singing Morgan street by turnpike, love ultra light fishing
Turnpike 🧡 thanks for watching!!
Love the Turnpike reference lol. Keep up the great content fam
Thanks John! Great band :)
Varivas Bait Finesse PE 5lb has become my favorite for ultralight
I hear really good things about Varivas. Might have to look into it! Thanks for sharing :)
Totally agree! Nothing wrong with mono if you spool it correctly.
'Ride or Die with one setup', love it man! Those Donkey Tail Jr. Chartreuse w/a Pink Head are my go-to's thus far, been killing the Crappie, Gills & Bass on em. And your Jig Heads are killer. Great Video & thanks for making a great Product!
Thank you so much! Happy to hear it :)
@@FishAnything I'll be needing more of your awesome product before long I'm sure!
Go out there and catch some donkeys!
Yes First one here thanks for another video buddy!
Ayoooo Dave got the first comment :) you da man!
Awesome video! I definitely have to get in the ultralight game. FISH ON
🤠👊🏽 thanks!
@@FishAnything Ya, and it gets ruined in sunlight if left out... i had fireline on my reels for about 6 before they started flaking
I wish people were excited about my belly!
Just found your channel, great content
Thanks Britt :) holler if you ever have any questions/feedback!
🤠
When I'm fishing in these small streams, creeks and canals, most definitely I like to use 8 pound test extra tough super strong clear line. Mostly I just fish for trout, crappies, perch and panfish. Well once in awhile I will catch a smallmouth bass, here and there. Great review and great video.
Thanks Shawn! Always good to learn from one another 🤠👏🏽
I agree! Try Trilene Micro Ice Mono (available in solar or clear)…very tough and casts even the
I have always wondered about using ice fishing line in open water. I will have to look into that!
I love 2lb sos line from trout magnet
Wow I can't imagine a 30+ lb catfish on a little crappie setup haha that has to be a blast.
@@FishAnything oh yeah, caught about a 5lb Bass under there not too long ago r r
@@FishAnything rod and reel are also factors (how "whippy" the rod is, for instance, or how full your spool is, etc)
If you try the JBraid, be sure to get the x8 Grand (they also sell "regular" x8 and an x4)
Another great video. I use fluro on my true ultralight reels and fluro leader/braid for 6# and up (Medium - still UL to some).
Nice! What fluoro do you like for the UL stuff? I want to experiment more. I really like this Samurai but it ain't cheap.
Loving the turnpike troubadours spoof
Turnpike is fantastic :)
@@FishAnything and if I have read correctly. They should start touring again soon.
@@timg9404 they sure are! Doubt if I will make it to a show this time but I saw them in Harrisburg PA a few years back. Great time!
@@FishAnything last I saw them was in 2018 ish in St. Louis. That being said have you listened to The Dead South?
Just wanna say thanks for all the great info and help! I’ve always just been a bass fisherman, but have gotten into pan fishing and creek fishing ever since your videos. I went ahead and got a TFO rod and a Daiwa revros 1000 to pair it with. My next one will probably be the sierra, or a st croix I’d like to get a good verity of options.
Awesome! Hope you crush fish on it :) I am glad you like the videos
@@FishAnything I'm gonna have to try 2lb mono now, since I thought 5lb braid was king for casting distance.
I think you will find it works quite well for the spinning reel :)
@@FishAnything seaguar invizx is great! But I also use KVD line conditioner and never had a problem.
I find Nanofil to be superior to Fireline in every category other than durability. The casting distance is amazing. I always use a swivel as well.
I am here again watching i am thankful fo sharing this video it gives me an idea of changing my lines well done brother thanks so much
Thanks for all the support :)
8lb power Pro braid on all my ultralights. I'll use one set up for ultralight finesse bass fishing.
The light braid is definitely growing on me!
I feel like such an amateur because I am, as I sit here with my Walmart Lew's speed stick lM 6. I did pour warm water all over the spool which helped out with the potential tangling of the line. It's not a bad little rod for a cheapy.
I’ve heard good things about that setup! It’s not bad just because it’s lower priced / from Walmart. Hope you put lots of flex in it!!
Good splaining my friend. Actually never took the diameter into the equation.
Thanks Ronald! I have honestly noticed a +15% further casting distance switching from 4lb to 2lb mono. It makes a big difference for the little stuff!
@@FishAnything though, thanks to your video, I have been using as a leader material and it's fantastic for that.
It makes up for the sensitivity issues of mono and helps with the fragility and memory issues of floro its worked well for me for the last few years
I will definitely give it a try! Thanks for the suggestion!!
Talked me into trying an ultra lite set up😊
Haha that is great to hear! Hope you have a lot of fun with it :)
ik i’m late but what pound leader did you use for the braid?
I typically run 6lb braid to a 4lb copolymer leader
Most ppl argue you gain casting distance with braid over mono or flouro.
I need to update this video now that I’ve used a lot more braids. High quality braid definitely casts farther than most options.
@@FishAnything Came here to say the same exact thing. Do you have any current recommendations on braid brands and what pound test?
I so much like your explanations!!
Thank you :)
Just used 6lb fireline on my president size 20. Tons of memory. I had a crazy tangle 2nd cast. Other than that it seemed okay but you got to keep you eye on it.
Yeah I have realized the Fireline is trash compared to other braid options.
Awesome I hope it works out well for you and you smash them :D Also hope the weather gets warmer :)
I like using 8 pound J-Braid Grand for my ultra lights. 👌
J Braid Grand is great stuff!
@FishAnything Sure is! Just purchased 6 pound J-Braid too, to mix it up a little 👌
Last trout season in socal i ran 5lb phenix iron feather braid to 2lb vanish flouro and it was plenty strong. I fought a few 3lb trout with confidence, no chances at anything over the 3lb mark yet.
That’s epic! Sounds like a nice setup 👀
I use braided line with about 4meters of really stretchy mono.
I fish a quite big river here where i live and long casts sometimes pay of so braided helps me cast furthe while the leader helps me to make my combo not so rigid so the fish cant un huck itself.
5kg (0.1mm) braid
3kg (0.16mm) mono
I use a Uni Knot to tie the leader (never, not even once failed) + it is low profile and it goes easily through the guides.
I use 4 lb mono from my crappie fishing line
Can't go wrong! I have found I like 2lb a bit more just because it casts about 15% further in my experience.
I like Mr crappie 4 lb. Trilene XL is great too!
I have been using 4-pound fluorocarbon with an 18" leader using monofilament. It seems to work well for me. Creek fishing needs some pretty serious abrasion resistance.
That makes a lot of sense. Abrasion is something I should have mentioned more. Mono is hard to beat on that topic. It can take a beating.
you're doing fluoro mainline to mono leader? what are you using as your union knot? i've never seen that done before
@@glxbe Sorry it took me so long to respond. My modem dies and AT&T too forever to get me a new one. I use a union to swivel to union. I fish areas with a lot of downed trees and rock bottoms in small streams. I hope it helps you out. I looked at "Hey Skipper" here on YT for knot tying tips.
do you ever use a swivel to connect braid to leader? what are the disadvantages and advantages.
I never do personally just because I like a longer leader. The main disadvantage is that a swivel can't go through the guides so you limit yourself to a small leader. It is fine for certain applications but not my style for most.
Just about all my finesse is low diameter braid to fluoro leader. Breaking strains etc all depends on what technique/species. Great video
I love braid to fluoro for all my bass spinning outfits. I just find that straight mono is more simple and works really well for the tiny stuff so it is my favorite for UL.
@@FishAnything mono is 100% the worst for ultralight
I prefer mono, mostly for something you didn't really mention. With ultralight line, I use 4#, being able to get tangles out is a big deal. Haven't really tried fluorocarbon for that. But I do like fluro for salt water leaders. I like the trilene and landed up to 17 lb fish on it
Main thing, constantly check knots and eliminate nicks. Interesting part of the video you were left handed, then right handed.
You two are having too much fun 😀👍🏼
That is always the goal :)
I'm also a ultralight fishing fanatic I find copolymer lines to be perfect for me I'm currently doing a big line test on a bunch of copolymer lines right now my favorites are Pline fluoroclear and Gamma Poly flex
I will definitely try those out thank you so much!
@@FishAnything gamma poly flex has a bit higher line diameter but very supple and strong line, the Pline fluroclear has thinner diameter and more stretch great casting distance
Hello Ethan. Not trying to be rude but do you own 100% of mule fishing? If so please keep it that way if you can. Thats what makes it special.
100% owner with full intentions to keep it that way 🤠👊🏽 thanks Jim!
@@FishAnything thats AWESOME!!
Is 3 lb mono hood for casting?
I think it would work quite well, yes!
I use the lemiglas x11 trout and panfish rod with a pflueger president size number 25 with Berkley 835 braid in 8 pound test and I'd Say its one of my personal favorites for the price point not totally a budget build but for the 160 price point it's well worth that in my opinion
Sounds like an awesome setup!
I've been using fire line since it came out. I used to use 4 pound but switched to 6 pound which holds up better and no decrease in action.
This video needs updated for sure! I will plan to revisit this topic this year :)
I prefer 4lb Maxima Chameleon on my UL setups. It hasn’t let me down yet. I’ve been thinking about trying micro braid with a fluoro leader though. Switch things up a bit.
I will have to try that one out. Thanks for sharing, Ryan.
I feel like mono or braid to leader is just about the only UL line to use. Flourocarbon is fine but it’s expensive and I feel like mono is as good given the stretch is minor because you have a super light hook.
Agreed. Fluoro under 6lb test just seems so dang brittle too.
Any tips on putting new mono on a spinning reel to avoid line twisting
1) don’t use line with too large of a diameter
2) make sure the line winds on to the reel spool the same way it was sitting on the plastic spool it came on
3) keep it tight while spooling and try to go fish it and get some resistance to get it tight to the spool.
Favorite braid : power pro
No wind knots with 5 lb line, cast a mile
Favorite mono: maxima ultra green
Doesn’t bird nest as much as cheaper mono
Favorite Flouro: Yozuri pink
Thin and invisible
I just got the daiwa samurai for 100% fluoro
I need to try all of those out!
@@FishAnything I’m in love with the daiwa samurai. Super thin. Thinner than same lb mono and doesn’t twists.
I live i West Virginia their are lots of rocks so I use Stren Moss Green never had a problem with it !!!!!!
I will have to check that out - thanks for the feedback!
Hi Ethan STREN Magnatnin 4 lb. is my go to for ultra light Donkey Tails Jr. are killer
Ooooh lala me likey! I need to try that. Thanks for sharing!
Ultralight: 1/64, 1/48 and 1/32 oz jigs I like to fish are where I think a high quality mono is still king.
Yeah! That’s why I love the sensation 2lb test 🤠👊🏽
@@FishAnything 2lb test is really hard to find right now. I try to buy from smaller places instead of Bass Pro Shops but I may have to break down and buy that Trilene from them.
So what hand are you? I see that you switch hands between casting and reeling.
Lol I try to be ambidextrous but my main comfort is to cast with RH and switch hands as the lure is in the air and then reel with my RH as well.
Dude you are the best.
Well I don't know about that haha but thanks!
I use 4lb mono on a 5'6 ultra light or as a leader with 6lb braided mainline. Same on a 7' med light . Not that I know what I'm doing tho.
Great way to do it. Braid has become my favorite after trying several brands. I like J Braid Grand x8 or Spro Finesse Braid. Super good casting distance!
My Ultralight set up is 100% pure #4 test floracarbon line slap full on my 500 size reel.
Heck yeah! If it works for you, that is the most important part. I like the feel of mono but fluoro is obviously a great choice too.
on my UL i've settled on berkley x9 6lb flame green and stren mono for leaders .
How is that line working? I haven't used that particular model yet.
I have done that with a couple of my reels. I am trying to like it but honestly I just prefer to reel right handed haha
Hard to belive but 2lb excel, bps brand has been awsome.Landed a 7 lb carp fishing for blue gill. But was on a shimano static 1000.love the smooth drag.
I will have to test that one! Sounds like a good option for a budget friendly price.
What size fluro leader did you have on the braid set up?
I typically run 6lb braid to a 4lb copolymer leader these days.
@@FishAnything that’s your line setup for an ultra light, would you run the same thing on a light rod?
I always run copolymer or ice fluro which has held up to even silver salmon and lake trout incidents.
Never tried braid as I feel like it is a bit much for the size of gear.
Awesome! The Trilene Sensation is a copolymer I believe. I like braid in the 6lb size, but I agree that it is a bit of overkill for some fishing.
I use 2lb braid line 5lb floro leader line 500 siries reel watching from Philippines
Thank Jojo! Good points, tight lines my friend!
Great video! I used fire line but it kept peeling apart on maybe a bad spool I got? But I switched to the sensation line
Interesting! I know they have changed the line a bit. This Ultra 8 Carrier is supposedly a lot better than the old stuff.
That jfluoro samurai has a hue to it, it seems? Not just clear?
I think it’s just clear! Probably just looked weird in the video
Have you tried Suffix-nanobraid? I can't decide between it, nanofil, or 832. So many choices lol
Haven't tried it yet but I will try to one of these days.
I will make your life easier - J Braid X8 in 6lb is really nice.
I use 2 pound Trilene xl smooth casting on my ultra light.
Works great!
Thanks for the video. Been ultralight fishing with 4lb test for a little over a year. Started off with monofilament. Was wondering if I should switch. I liked Trilene XL.
Happy to help! Trust me, going to 2lb test will add a lot of casting distance and it still works really well.
Thanks!!!!
When we switched to braid I stop getting wind knots so that's my go to. Ps Love the Donkey Tail & Donkey Tail Jr on on the Mule Jigs! 🎣❤
Thanks - glad you are liking them! And yeah braid is solid, I have really been liking the 6# that I use. I do prefer the 2lb mono if I am casting super light baits though (which I do a lot of).
Getting my first UL set up, st croix pan fish 6' with a 1000 series reel , would you suggest 2lb or 4lb mono?
@@sunnybhai1904 I've had good results with 4lb mono. I'm thinking of trying the 2lb just because.
6lb - 300m PE line for my deep sea jigging in my deep spool
4lb - 100m PE line for my freshwater game in my shallow spool
both with 10lb or lower FC leader...
What brand was the braded line set up
It was fireline. After using other brands, I recommend Daiwa j braid Grand x8 or spro finesse braid.
What about the reel
What re the models
I wonder how much of this would carry over o BFS. I can see using say 15 lb braid to the equivalent diameter flouro (what is that, 6 lb?) leader. Just me thinking out loud, I’ve never actually tried it.
I tend to like all line types for BFS depending on what I am doing. I think I prefer braid the most.
Go big if you want a bit more quality :D Thank you very much for the support!
what do you think of copolymere
I actually believe Trilene Sensation is a co-polymer. I like it!
Ive only tried braid once and it just wanst for me changing leaders on the go is a pain so i like to keep it simple so i also use the Berkley Trilene on my Daiwa Legalis 1000 once i have my mini clip which is actually meant for fly fishing and is tiny im ready to go and changing lures is so easy 😁 ✌💙👍 from Scotland ❤🎣 ©® 👌
Gotta find what works best for you!
