@wargameshobby haha it happens. Whilst I'm here, would you say that circular bases work better in Saga than square for infantry, or is it down to personal preference?
@@sonofsek69 personally I prefer round, but a lot of my buddies do square for foot, especially close order foot. Possibly round for open order, like slingers or javelin-men. But as you say, it’s down to everyone to choose. 😁
Excellent video. Thank you very much for taking the time to record and edit this. It is very helpful as I’ve just bought the rules and started painting Vikings.
I too am all in on the rules after watching this video. Also purchased the Age of Vikings, Book of Battles and Age of Hannibal books. Looking forward to another video on Saga. IMHO, GB owes you a commission fee, Lol!
Glad you like them! Your English is far better than my Austrian. As it happens, I am currently painting up an Austrian Napoleonic army. They do look good too.
I just found your channel, I’m scrolling through the videos seeing Saga, Lion Rampant, Rebels and Patriots - we’re playing all the same games! Greetings from Connecticut - subscribed!
Thanks so much for this great video. I really like how you use tokens to remember We Obey etc. I completely agree that if another person knows the boards better, they have a distinct advantage.
i just started playing saga and i gotta say its a great game i've had a few games and im hooked and by the way great video 👍 ohh and i have a an anglo saxons army for age of vikings, a roman army for age of hannibal and a horde army for age of magic
Overly complicated for such limited troop types. No rules, dice or army lists available when I tied this a few years ago. Then I bought some other stuff from them being happy to wait. And they lost my order. Abandoned since then. I have been a long time war gamer, starting out on WRG 6th edition in the 1980's. Writing a much better set of rules with a friend. Even the old Middle Earth SBG had better and more adaptable rules than these. But it was a quality video, thanks
I tend to agree with most of what you have said. I don't play them much these days due to not being the easiest to play and enjoy. They are unique, and many people I know do like them, but they appear to have become very competitive these days and I find they not a rule set for a relaxing game.
@@wargameshobbyI looked at and tried to like SAGA after someone gifted me the rules and two of the age of books. Only 4 troop types was a turn off though, made worse by the Battleboards that allow you assign buffs and de-buffs that can make units bear no resemblance to what they actually are. In fact the miniatures seem to add very little to what is basically a deck-building board game. The boards break the immersion from the table / minis for me and several of them are very OP and unbalanced. If you come across players that know their boards well it will be a very tough game. It’s very tournament orientated these days too, players deploying their units in MSUs to maximise their SAGA dice is very common. Lion Rampant and The Barons War give a better game IMO.
@@Edward-Plantagenet yes, I can’t argue against your view. I used to play a lot of Saga but not these days. It is a shame as the idea was good, but as you say it is hard work these days and has lost its appeal. Although I am seriously thinking of trying out ‘Age of Chivalry’ when it comes out as I have several armies ready to go and I hope the factions are more balanced. It’s been a long time in the making, and as long as they have play tested them enough it could revive the rules. Watch this space. 🤔
@ Yes it was the upcoming AOC that tempted me recently to look at SAGA again. Folks here are still pretty much against the idea as the core concepts will be the same, 4 warrior types with a janky Battle Boards. Hopefully I’m wrong, I’ll certainly tune in to see though. The other problem is that there are rules out there that are less gamey such as Barons’ War, Lion Rampant and even Hail Caesar (though I find that very bland once you remove the command activation mechanic). Now of course there is Midgard too. Enjoy your videos though, especially the LR battle reports.
Great video. You have inspired me to get some old figures back out. I have Germanic peoples from the Roman era. What rulebook and battle board do I need for them? Thank you very much. 😊
Not an easy one to answer. Lion Rampant is easier to play, and you use more figures. I like the simplicity of the game. It's a game easy to set up and just play. Saga takes a while to get the hang of. You have to concentrate on what you are doing. The boards for each faction take a lot to learn and if you play a board you have not played before you can miss things. If you play someone who knows a board well you will struggle. Some boards also dominate others, so getting a balanced game can be hard. Once you do get the hang of it, Saga is fun. But I find I have to be in the right mood to play. So, for a simple fun game, play Lion Rampant, for a more complex game with much more variety play Saga. Hope that helps.
Comment in the final part of the game. According to the rules, if you "rest" a unit, they cannot take any other action that turn. You activated the bow levy after resting them in the same turn.
Hi Don, thanks for the comment. I think you may have misread the rule. If a unit rests, it must be the first thing it does, then it can be activated to do something else. What you cannot do is activate it to do something like move or shoot, then rest it, so the rest must be first. It can also only rest once per move, and once rested it cannot rest again. Thanks for the video. This is the best video I have found describing how to play Saga.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks.
Just painting up Victrix 28mm Saxons and Vikings for this game, all because of this video. Cheers 2 years later
Great, let me know how you get on with them.
this is a good presentation of the rules, I have been interested in starting Saga for a long time
