How to play Lion Rampant

- This video is about how to play Lion Rampant, the medieval wargame rules. This video shows how a wargame in the Crusader period works using these rules. One force is from the Military orders army list, the other is a force from the Saladin list.
It is 80 minutes long so you may prefer to watch it in smaller parts. I tried to make this video shorter, but with so much to cover, I could not do so. I hope you enjoy it, and it helps you understand the rules more. Please ask any questions you like, I will answer them if I can.

I just spotted an error. At 28.36 I said the skirmishers need 7 or under, of course I meant to say 7 or over. Dohhhh. Sorry about that. I am sure there are other minor errors, I hope not many though.
I just spotted a mistake in how I played the religious leader. He only gets to use his special ability once per turn, not on every attack in that turn. So I used it too often. Not that he used it more than once every turn, but it was a mistake on some of the turns. Sorry.
Hello Alec, here is a fan from Germany. I recently stumbled upon your RUclips videos. I'm excited about that. It's good for me that your English pronunciation is so easy to understand. I had bought the books on this some time ago. But through your videos I finally delved deeper into the topic. Now I have to translate the rules of the game into German for some of my friends. But I'll have fun with it. It's your fault! You have now put a flea in my ear, as the German saying goes. Daniel Mersey has probably hit the jackpot with his Rampant rules.
@@bernardoko4593 hi, great to hear from you. I am glad my videos have helped, and hope your friends enjoy the rules when they play them. They are easy to learn the basics and when you do they give a good feel of the period without the complexity of some rules. It is a pity they have not been translated to German. Thanks for the feedback and enjoy your games. 👍
@wargameshobby Hello Alec, I'm currently connecting some potentially interested and experimental figure collectors. Fortunately, many of them know English well enough. Books are also patient. you can always read it again if something wasn't understood correctly right away. and you can also pause and repeat a video. The school was good for something too. English is part of it! In any case, I'll be beating the drum hard for Lion Rampant in Germany. It really doesn't always have to be that complicated to have fun.
Thank you so much for this video. I've taken the rules and simplified them to make a game my 6 year old and I can play. You did a fantastic job explaining it.
Fantastic! Yes, the rules would be good for that, easily simplified. A great way to start a youngster, let's hope he grows to love the game. :)
Thank you for helping realise that Lion Rampant are the rules that I've been looking for! Most of my gaming was WRG 6th, back in the day, these rules seem to be bringing back the fun into Ancient/Medieval wargaming. I'll be madly converting them for 15mm Sumer armies.😂 Am currently rebasing!
I like them. Not everyone does, but we have quite a few club members that have now tried them out and they all agree they are simple and are fun. That is what it is all about. :)
Looks like the rules I've been looking for for small scale skirmish games. Saga battleboards were getting me down 😅. Ordered the 2nd Ed and planning my next army around this for 100 yrs War era.
Great , very interesting. Sounds fun thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it. And thanks for the feedback.
Well done Alec very enjoyable. I have played one game of Lion Rampant, but in French with a group of Gamers here in France.
Good to see your persisting with yet another set of rules.
Thanks Leslie. I do like to vary what I play, but these days I also stick to rules that are not too complex. These are fun rules. 👍
Thank you for putting this together. I just got the books and enjoyed watching you work through the rules.
You are so welcome!
Excellent presentation even allowing for the odd mistake. Our group was playing "Sword & Spear" but we found these took to long for our 2-2 1/2 hour Wednesday evening meetings. Had our first "Rampant" game last week and though hardly a simulation thoroughly enjoyed learning the game. We prefer to leave all figures on the table and mark losses with dice. Again, great stuff, subbed. Cheers.
Thanks for the comments. I agree, leaving the units on the table and using markers works just as well.
Cracking let’s play video. Got the rules for Christmas and always like to watch a play through while I’m reading them myself
I very much enjoy your "How to play" video's. Thank you for taking the time and effort to make them for us.
Thanks for that. You are very welcome. I quite enjoy it, as long as I don't make mistakes. :)
Really helpful as I am just learning... thank you very much :)
A pleasure. They are very good rules, so I hope you enjoy them.
Thanks for doing such a helpful video!
Excellent content as the channel itself.
Good job!
My pleasure! Glad you found it helpful. Thanks.
Thank you for taking the time to do your video. I've just got the LR rules and it was very useful.
Shot in the dark here. To anyone around the comments: Are there any Medieval tabletop games similar in play style to that of Middle Earth Strategy Battle Game? I know, I know, it’s a GW product, but it’s great! And I’m looking at getting into medieval/dark ages minis as a new project for painting. Might as well find a game to play as well…. This game seems awesome, but I’m trying to get away from ‘unit’ mechanics. More akin to MESBG where every mini can chose to move independently.. anything come to mind? Deus Vult might be good with the Burn & Loot book, but that’s really the only other one I can think of. Warlord has Shieldwall… anything else???? Let me knowwww
I don't know of any. But I remember some years ago there was a skirmish set of rules where each figure moved independently, but because of that the force on each side was only about a dozen figures each, which for me is not enough. But there must be some out there. I will ask around.
@@wargameshobby the supplement for Deus Vult seems reasonable. Burn and Loot. Units move independently, but there a still a unit coherency… I’m gonna get that book soon 😌
Thank you for the awesome content!!
Thanks for sharing 👍
Thanks for watching!
just found this video a great game but at least in the 2nd edition one fail will no longer end a turn and with your alternate rule you can ignore the two fails to give a "better" flow to play
Yes, I much prefer that.
I just got LR rules and looking to get some Perry plastics (Agincourt french and english) to the table.
Great guide, thanks. What size board are you playing on?
In my bolt-hole (garage) I can only manage a 4x3, which is fine for a small game. But usually I play 6x4, or even larger depending on the size of the force. A 24 v 24 point games needs 6x4 really.
@@wargameshobby Thanks for getting back to me. I'm new to these rules. I only have a similar-sized table, so would you advise lower-point armies - would 18 points be possible? Are you squishing 24-point armies into the available space on your video?
@@hobhood7118 yes, you will still get a good game with 18 points. I have had plenty of games using less than 24 points. 👍
What does 24 point and 18 point mean?
Lion rampant is a fun game!
I agree, they are fairly easy to pick up and work well.
Nice video Alec.... I think my issue with the rules is the fact that all orders fail when one does. But when we can all get together maybe we can try a game using my Normans in Sicily forces
I agree it can be harsh. We can either drop that rule or allow two fails instead of just the one. Although it does stop the game being predictable, and should even out. But as I say I am happy to try something different. 👍
This is great - so thoughtful and well done. I wonder if you think the second edition is worth the investment?
I am wondering that myself. It will probably be worth it, as the rules are a very reasonable price, but let's wait and see. :)
Can heavy cavalry with bow move and shoot
Hi Iain, no, they are not as flexible as light cavalry who can do a skirmish move, so move/shoot or shoot/move. Heavy cavaly with a bow have to remain stationary while shooting, which can be handy at times.
great video! i am looking into historical crusade battles and would like to know where did you get your figurines?
The crusaders I bought from someone, so I am not sure of the make. My Arabs are mainly Gripping Beast. I do like their s4 point tarter sets. But there are loads out there to choose from.
@@wargameshobby thank you
Hi,great help thanks. One question, I can’t seem to find where it says to half dice for skirmishing. I found the -1 to hit in the Mounted Yeomen rules for skirmish. If you can point me in the direction to look that would be great as I am painting stuff and planning some games after lockdown.
Haha, you got me there, you spotted my deliberate mistake. 😬 That is what happens when you play several sets of rules, you mix them up. Of course you are correct, they still roll the normal amount of dice, but at a -1 on the roll, so they hit on 6 rather than 5/6. As it happens it is the same chance of hitting, but that is no excuse. 😳 a slip of the tongue on my part. Thanks for pointing it out. 👍
@@wargameshobby thanks. I was just reading the book as you went along and was panicking that I missed something. Minis ordered, so that will be my next task in paint queue 😆
@@kyrellification paint queue's, yes, I know all about them. 😁 Also, I easily get distracted.
@@wargameshobby I paint quite fast, but the bloody thing never ends lol. Keep up the good work, subscribed.
