- Welcome back to the channel and the first battle report of 2023. I have been playing Saga since it first came out but this is the first time i have filmed a battle report. Saga was a really popular choice on the recent poll for games so we thought why not give it a go.
I'm sure that we have made a few mistakes here and there but we had a great game and look forward to the next. I'm joined by Robin who is using 4pts of Vikings and i'm using 4pts of Anglo-Danes

Great game love to see Saga being played. Just to help with future games 1) you can do a manoeuvre which allows for a free move as long as it does not come within L from enemy and stay out of terrain so Robin could move the levy without a dice so it helps keep the dice for special abilities. 2) when you wipe out a unit in Saga all friendly units within S of the unit destroyed gets a fatigue, so Robin's warrior would have 2 fatigues in turn 2. I hope that helps
Thanks, even though I've played it for ages it's still very different when you're trying to film and play 🙂 I was actually completely unaware of the manoeuvre rule so that's ace, thanks for that. We realised about the fatigue from destroyed units in turn 3 I think, I mention it at some point but thought it just best to continue. As we play more regularly hopefully we'll miss less 😁

Great battle report, the table and figures look awesome as well! Lovely to see a game of Saga on the channel.
Few rules pointers, there is a thing called "manoeuvres" on pg18 of the rule book, this allows you to make a free move activation with each unit, as long as they start and end their movement out of 12" of the enemy. This way you have a few more dice to load up on abilities to prepare for following turns. We played the first year without this rule as well, but it does make for a nice change. Also you can't double your starting attack dice pool, so those three vikings could only add 3 attack dice by using Valhalla (sadly).

Very interesting game and mechanics, Robin seemed to have his usual luck with the dice early on. Had not heard of SAGA before this video, may be looking it up. Thanks for and interesting and bloody game, looking forward to the next one

Thanks mate, I'm glad you liked it. It was when I was inserting the Saga abilities I realised we played some of them wrong, I misunderstood that the melee / response for example meant it was a response to a melee. I played it that it could be played either as a responses or in melee 😁
I've just so happened to get back interested in SAGA so for me this was a prophetic video release! Minis and battlefield are stunning. I can't wait to see more in the future! 😊

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it 🙂 I can do, they are quite old now, I did mine about 10 years ago. The next report should be up in in a day or so but in the next one I'll try and remember to add some stills of the units 👍

Fun to watch guys. I generally love that in Robin you have found an opponent who’s dice rolls are as ‘variable’ as yours 🤣

Look forward to seeing more Saga videos from you, good format and video work. Obviously you are still learning the rules which will come with more games. One thing that can be done is to use a dice to modify/track each units armour in a melee (very handy). Glad you noticed the fatigue should be spread to units within S if they all die. Other things that will help to know is that units with heavy weapons can't close ranks (never happened) Also Shield wall is a Melee or shooting/reaction which I am pretty sure can only be used as a reaction to an attack and not added to an attack you've made. Played in good spirit and gives a good taster - I am keen to check out what other games you've got battle reports on. PS Robin did really well on the 3 warriors getting 15 dice (could only have ever been 6, which is double his initial combat pool)
Thanks very much, glad you enjoyed it👍 the dice is a good idea for tracking the armour as the modifiers are applied, may have to use that 😁 thanks for clarifying on the abilities, i read the / as an either/or rather than as a reaction to that specific situation. The next game was played straight after this one but we'll make sure the 3rd one takes this into account.

Curious, what are you using for the sections of tall grass/fields? Looks brilliant.
Thanks, it's made from Teddy Bear Fur with various green, yellow and brown dyes splattered on it then I use a combe to rake it through 👍

So that's interesting that the models don't need to reach base contact for them to join in the close combat?
That's correct 👍 the models move as far as they can into the combat but then all contribute. The exact wording is; all the figures from both units participate, even if they are not directly in contact with the enemy (hand to hand combat is not as static as our figures would have us believe)

Yeah that would have added alot of pressure on my flank, to be fair we've realised he could have done with some free manoeuvres but all part of learning 😁

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. There is another one on the way shortly and two more planned after. I enjoy Saga as it's not precisely historical it's meant to be larger than life, like, well a Viking Saga, always enjoy playing it 👍
It's odd to see something outside your really great Warlord Games batreps, but this was a ton of fun

Great batrep! Just a quick question: Wouldnt you just get 5 Dice on your battleboard max as you just have 5 units? at least that's how we played the rules so far
also: where would one be able to acquire those lovely 7th son dice? :-)
Thank you 🙂 it's on Pg 10 of the rulebook, you always have 8 available, no more no less, it means you can leave some on and still roll all your dice if you are generating 5. It's quite handy, if I remember this was a change from V1 👍

@@Chrisbo123 hey, as long as you have a good game and the game keeps moving I don't think it matters, we got a fair few bits wrong but always try not to let it spoil our gun 😁
I thought this as well. Turns out it's a change from v1 to V2. It's better this way. Allows you to be much more epic even in a smaller game.
Using Shieldwall on the turn you charge, while legal, shouldn't be allowed. That's always bugged me how incorrect and unthematic it is.
Yeah agreed, but I've since found out the / on the board means it is played as a reaction to a melee action, so essentially if charged 👍
Oh, I really like those movement sticks as well. Do they come with the saga rules or did you pick them up elsewhere?
I picked them up elsewhere, it was 10 years ago but I think it was Arcane Scenery. 👍
