❤️UPDATE SEPT 21 - Just days after removing AI art from its Galleries Shutterstock took back its decision and restored removed AI content.
💥💥*Update Sept 19 2022 Shutterstock has begun removing AI images and rejecting new submissions of AI art. This video will still be useful to you in that it will teach you how to upscale your images into better quality for other purposes.💥💥
Many people getting into AI art are wondering how they can monetize this, one of the ways is to sell their generated images on stock websites. In this video I share with you some information about getting started as a shutterstock contributor submitting my AI generated art that was created in Midjourney.
I have been submitting to stock for a number of years for book covers with another agency so I also bring my experience with that to the video with some helpful tips to get into the stock image industry if you are completely new to the game.
The images that come straight out of Midjourney are not perfectly licenseable as is so I will show you how to prepare the image files for submissions.
If you are interested in learning more about my work with book cover photography check out my playlist ( please not as of todays date Sept 2022 the book cover agency I work with DOES NOT ACCEPT ANYTHING WITH AI GENERATED ELEMENTS) so if this is something you are interested in getting into you will need to illustrate your own images, or do photography.

List of Stock sites currently accepting AI generated art
Deviant art
Adobe stock
Possibly Alamy, their online policies state anything that is copyright free (AI) I tried to submit some illustrated jpg files, but their illustration submissions are for vectors in an EPS file
I messaged istock and havent had a reply yet so they are unknown at this time.
Stock sites that DO NOT ACCEPT AI generated art
Shutterstock
Arcangel
Trevillion (its ok if it’s a small piece of a composite or something not the majority of the image)
I will update the list and also keep people updated in the comments.
Strange, I had written a comment and now I can't find it. Anyway, Unfortunately Shutterstuck has now prohibited this type of content.
Really!! I'm gonna have to read more about this! Thank you
Thank you I did find confirmation they are removing ai content. Mine are still available right now, I'm not sure if they just haven't gotten to me or if because I alter my images they are considering them derivative...I will make an updated video soon.
@@WildEmpress I believe they are just removing images with tags like #midjourney or #aigenerated
Because this youtuber is ALSO an AI generated content. She is not real !!! that's why your comment dissapeared.
Yeh because they have creating their own ai generator now to use contributors photos.
Thanks for the website allowing us to upscale. I was looking for something like this for weeks! 😉
No problem!
This is early to ask, as I am only 1 minute into the video. :) How do you upscale the images, as SS needs an image to be at least 4MP? As a newbie, I got the images scaled to max 3MP. I assume the paid subcription allows scaling them a bit further? Ty!
use um site para redimensionar sua imagem em um tamanho 4k
Thank you for making this video and sharing your insight! It's going to be interesting to see how the copyright laws evolves as, as far as I last hear at the beginning of the year, AI-generated art can't be copyrighted so to be a derivative of a non-copyrightable work becomes... hmm (?) Then you should be able to copyright it as... a genuine derivative (?) with no rights reserved on the original work but full rights reserved on its derivative. (Now that I type that out, it makes sense I think...nvm, just curious if you have any projects on what we might see in terms of laws being changed.)
Excellent video - thank you.
Where is the official statement from Shutterstock that they don't accept AI content anymore, until now they still do that?
Is TinyWow licensing allow to sell images that you edit on their site?
I enjoyed the video and the experience you provided with us regarding the use of AI art, but what really drew me in was your crackly voice. I subscribe.
Thanks for sharing!
Absolutely ❤️
Beautiful work
Thank you very much!
Thanks! Very useful video
Happy to help ☺️
One question, to sell in stock agencies like Shutterstock don't you need to have a coorporate licence because of this rule:
"Corporate-User License Terms
If you are an employee or owner of a company with more than $1,000,000 USD a year in gross revenue, and you are using the Services to benefit your Employer or company you must purchase a corporate membership plan to use the Services or copy the Assets for your company."
I don't think that contributors are considered employees,
Thank you for the informative video.
Do Arcangel and Trevillion pay well? I've been contributing to SS (not AI images) but they for sure pay in peanuts.
Arcangel and trevillion have rights managed mostly libraries, the pay is much higher than shutterstock or Adobe. But neither Arcangel or trevillion accept ai work and Is very geared towards book covers.
Shutterstock only accepts jpg not PNG files do you convert your images? Midjourney saves them all as PNG right?
Yes excellent point! I do also convert my images to jpg.
Did you email shutterstock and they approve it or what? But what about from midjourney do they allow to sell? Please enlighten me, I am confuse.
If you are on any subscription tier in midjourney (I have the $30 subscription) all of your renders have a license for commercial work so I can sell them however I like. Different stock agencies have different ways to get approved, shutterstock is set up so you create a contributor account and your first upload is your submission.
Are you a Trevillion contributor as well? I'm asking because I would like to know if is true that their image resolution should be 16GB minimum?!
I'm not a contributor there, but I have emailed them in regards to finding out where they stand with AI and I can say they're client support was friendly and awesome so I would say go ahead and ask them directly and they will be glad to assist you 😊
Any updates on your progress and profits?
Lovely!
Update please ,hows everyone doing selling the Ai art ?
I switched to Adobe stock recently. I've got maybe 40 images there, and made about 11 $
My hobby is to create art by myself, oil painting. But to make money I think AI generated art is a good way to go fast, i'm starting on that and I hope they don't reprove my images.
Hello, thank you very much for the video. is there a final update? Do I still accept Adobe Stock AI studies? Because I couldn't find any work when I searched Adobe in the search engine.
I've been left hangin' they closed my help ticket without giving me a definite answer. I get the feeling stock sites aren't sure what direction to go right now...
@@WildEmpress Thanks for the feedback. Yes, I've been working as an exclusive photographer and videographer at istock for a long time. istock has stopped accepting AI due to copyright confusion. But I can still see AI work in alamy and sutter stock. I wanted to make sure it's the same in Adobe stock.
@@mustafagul3481 I don't know about Adobe, personally I think eventually it will get sorted and we will have clear guidelines. I'm just holding off till that happens.
My image was still pixelated. How are your images coming out better?
Another commenter has suggested topaz gigapixel as a good upscale tool. I have never used it myself so I don't have personal experience with it. But it might be something to look into
Did we need to add any additional information, when we uploading AI-generated images on Shutterstock?
As far as I know its not being requested at this time. I keyworded my images the same as I would something I illustrated myself. Might be a good idea to put AI in the keywords though, it probably wouldn't do any harm. I will give it a try with my next upload and see if I get any different feedback.
@@WildEmpress Thank you for this video and your replay! After watching your video yesterday I upload my first AI-generated image on Shutterstock, but my image it's still pending... How long it took for your images to be approved or rejected?
@@carlharvey9482 it took only 24 hours for me, however if lots of people are uploading now it might make it longer.
@@WildEmpress Thank you for your answer! I just one of my image was approved, but others have been rejected for reasons (1)
Rasterization Quality: Illustration has rasterization issues such as blurriness and/or artifacting. Maybe you have some hit how to solve that?
I guess you also needed to fill in the property release from the artist of the work.
midjourney pictures are in .png format, how do you turn them into jpeg ? did you just put your png file to shutterstock and it has been aprouved then ? thanks for reply
I edited everything in photoshop and save as jpeg. Shutterstock no longer accepts ai images, I have moved to Adobe stock. They do.
@@WildEmpress how Shutterstock detects that a picture is AI generated?
Update. This morning I had my first entire batch not approved because they no longer accept this type of content. :(
They have decided to create their own ai generator and only use theirs. Adobe stock is accepting ai submissions right now try there
@@WildEmpress Thanks so much for making this video Vanessa. Super interesting!
How do you know that they've decided to create their own AI generator? Did they tell you or they posted an announcement?
@@MorganGautier they made an announcement explaining what they intend to do
I have a question
The site rejects all images of artificial intelligence, how did you accept the images?
I have switched to Adobe stock, shutterstock has changed their polices since I posted the video
If you don't tell them it's AI then how do they know???
I personally don't like lying, but that's a choice each person has to make for themselves
Yes, please make a video about redbuble!
Thanks so much!! Glad I can help
Thanks for the video. I have been uploading AI art to Adobe Stock. Some of them were rejected due to poor quality. I upscale the images before upload -> 2x for illustrations, 4x for realistic images. I hope to build a sizeable portfolio soon!
Merhabalar, shutterstock'a ilk defa yapay zeka çalışmaları gönderdim ama işlerimi almadılar. Son durum nedir, artık sutterstock yapay zeka çalışmalarını kabul etmiyor musunuz? Sitede çok yapay zeka çalışması görüyorum. . İçerik yüklüyor musunuz?Do you have any idea which stock agencies are currently accepting AI?
As far as i know adobe stock is the only one at the moment
@@WildEmpress Thanks😊🙏
HOw d oyou get them aproved? they say i need model realease
Shutterstock doesn't accept ai anymore. Adobe does but you need to do 2 important things. 1 label all ai as illustrations even if it's photorealistic, 2. Keywords the images with ai generated art
What is the pixel size that Shutterstock needs?
im not sure the pixel size but I did have something rejected for being under 4mb
Btw, how do you mean to sell something that people can get for free same as you did? It's like trying to sell bags of mud
Maybe some people are to busy to make bags of mud but need some
Midjourney has a subscription fee. So it's not for free, also it usually take some time tweaking prompts and like I mentioned in the video I always alter the images and "fix" them in photoshop. Not everyone has a photoshop subscription or have the knowlegde of how to use photoshop to fix the images. So yeah if someone just wants one image rather than subcribing to midjourney and photoshop and then the hassle of writing in tons of prompts and learning photoshop than they might enjoy being able to spend a couple bucks on shutterstock for the image thats ready to use.
so the point we can upload image to shutterstock from generate midjourney?
Not anymore. They've changed their policy. I have started submitting to Adobe stock instead.
@@WildEmpress yep, I start upload to adobe stock and dreamstime
do you upload files as illustrations?
I do, and I haven't tried to upload anything that looks like a photo yet,
Awesome, thank you for this video!
My pleasure!
Nice scary easter egg - how 'body disposal' and 'world domination' is some of your bookmarking folders :o :p
Haha good eye!! 👍
Hello. Are you still able to upload those images in 2023? I need updated information.
Shutterstock Is not accepting ai images. Adobe stock is. You can submit ai generated work to Adobe stock
@@WildEmpress Oh. I have never tried Adobe stock. I’m going to check it out if is able to use in Ukraine. Thank you!
does adobe stock accept ai image pls tell me i want make some money 😅
Adobe stock does, you just have to follow their guidelines and make sure you tag it as generative ai art appropriately
Very good info Vanessa. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for watching ❤️
Is this still relevant?
Update NOVEMBER 2022- Shutterstock has decided not to represent AI contributions, it will be offereing AI generation to the clients looking to license images.
That's the most recent info I have
Have you had any success making money on Shutterstock? Or is this too new for you?
still too new and like I said in the video QUANTITY plays a big role so also filling my gallery up more will help with that,
AI Generated Omages not accepted by Shutterstock
Rejected my image rejection reasons non-licensable content
Shutterstock does not accept ai generated images right now
I'm uploading to Shutterstock, using Dall-E for creating my AI images. I'm unclear as to whether I need to provide release on file for uploading realistic images of people, since they aren't actually real people, but rather, are generated by AI.
I haven't tried to upload anything super real, in that situation though I would try to find a way to make it clear it's ai generated and doesn't need a release. Maybe ai typed into the keywords or the title description
@@WildEmpress sure enough the image got rejected because they think that the picture is a real couple and not AI generated. I may try that one again by adding an "AI" descriptor. One weird thing is in a different upload, I created an AI photo of an orchard, where I intentionally had the AI blur the background. I made it with hanging fruit, in focus, in the foreground, and it wouldn't accept the image because it said the image was blurry. And I'm thinking to myself well yes it's supposed to be blurry. Oh well.. I shall try again....
@@drawnhere Thats another reason that I rather work with an agency like Arcangel, they have a real person looking at every single image, if you read into shutterstock info you will see that it is only "spot checked" by real people, and the rest of them are approved based on a computer-approval, so I would assume thats what happened with the blurry one, if it had been a person, they would understand what was going on with the image. So frustrating!!
Gotta wonder if you're making any money with this
I haven't made any money from this yet, but its been 2 days so thats probably typical
Also the rest of the agencies, like Adobe, will apply the same rules soon.
And if you try to avoid them, you risk the ban on all your portfolios.
They already have 415 millions images, they don't need more millions of AI-generated images.
I think that stock-image agencies will never need AI images because they already have millions of contributors that upload authentic images to get paid a few cents of dollars for sale,
and AI images are not as good as human-made ones.
When human work is soo cheap, you don't need robots 😃
Wow. You are so beautiful, Miss
*sarcasm* They should ban all Photoshop/Maya/digital photos - since the computer did the work not the human. Doh... no digital art was actually physically made by a human - ever. Right? Oh it was the time and effort involved yah? The three seconds you took to point and shoot is more valid than my hours of creating init images and unique prompts? Blah blah blah - jealousy isn't a good look. Get with the times people AI is your new paintbrush and t is JUST as valid as any other form of art... bUT Ai aRt IsNt ReAl ArT herPeDerpe...
I feel like the people that make these decisions should be required to try and make a very specific thing on midjourney, maybe then they would realize how hit and miss it can be
other contributor: AI disrupt our job at microstock world
meanwhile: hey, use AI and sell in on microstock, boom... save your time 😅
I love how upset people are getting about this type of thing. Get money. Do you. It isn't "lame". Whats lame is hating on others and wishing for their failure because you're bitter.
Well I'm a bit of a stinker and find debate entertaining, half my interest in AI is reading people argue about things 😅
That's what burglar would say.... And yeah, it's extremely lame, selling something that you got for free with 0 effort.
Exactly! Unfortunately a good segment of the population is just that: insecure, jealous and can’t help but project their own issues onto others.
Life’s too short to entertain those people though. 😎
@@markomilojevic8122 lol.. AI art burgler > holier-than-thou wannabe artist (egomaniac)
@@markomilojevic8122 It's not zero effort.
Just don't, it's lame. Be creative, use an illustrator, draw something by yourself and sell it.
As someone coming from making my own images I understand this completely, while it's been fun to do some AI it certainly will not take over my usual workflow. I don't find it as personally satisfying to create as something I did myself. I think it will probably be a little flooded for a little while, but the non-artists will probably drop off when the new-shiny-ness of AI wears off.
@Norma Neumann absolutely, I think that a lot of artists will use ai kinda like a rough draft. I've also rendered things to use as textures and overlays in photoshop. It can be used in a ton of different ways aside from just straight up as-is.
@Norma Neumann in my previous video I talk about my predictions about how I think ai will trend, but ultimately people will get over it and traditional art will become more socially valued. It's called the future of ai if your interested in watching
@Norma Neumann Don't be worried. Its just a fad that news sources are making a big deal about to scare people because it generates numbers for them. And so many people are buying the idea that someone out there is trying to replace artists with machines. Just like they used to say that machines would replace chefs/mechanics/factory workers/any job. Its just fear mongering. And its working, obviously.
