As both an amateur stock photographer and AI researcher I have mixed feeling about this.
There is for sure a need for AI generated images/videos (yes it works with videos too). Only the most creative photographers will survive this, if they do.
The best we can hope for as stock photographer is that it will take time and that we will get compensation for our images being used to train future models (that must be the reason of the partnership with OpenAI). I doubt it will be the case tho !

What exactly is the need for AI generated images? I mean a real needfor it. I'm really curious about your answer.
@@chessshyrecat AI generated images are cheaper and more fitted to the buyer exceptation then traditionnal stock image. So they just adress the stock market needs better than us photographer.
But its more than that. It unlock new possibilities, e.g. user specific dynamic content, inspiration boost, etc.
Big companies like Shutterstock make the most of it while giving peanuts to the hard working photographers.
It’s difficult for to agree 100%, I know what you are saying and yes $0.10 per download is frankly ridiculous… but then I started this my intention was to learn while getting paid, 12 years later I’m still getting paid for work I did years and years ago, I actually haven’t uploaded for real in a couple of years, yet I continue to receive payments 🤷 I wish each photo sold for hundreds like they used to 20 years ago, but everything evolves or devolves depending on where we are standing 😅

how about the computer programmers that make the ai? is their work a little harder?
@@danielmanahan692 Dear Daniel, I wish it was that easy, I'd be doing it all day long really. It's not just a press of a button, a lot of stock photographers have to prepare the shot in terms of lighting and arranging the products if they are taking still life photographs, you also have to consider that you are creating a shot and not just taking it just for the fun of it. This is just the photography part, you still have to process the image and make sure it's sharp enough and do all the necessary adjustments for it to be accepted by Shutterstock's AI. You also have to input the description and insert key words and make sure they are relevant per image. Keep in mind that you're photos have to be good enough to sell. And the list goes on my friend, we're not looking down on the programmers, their work is truly brilliant and we appreciate it, we're simply asking for a fair share.

Now AI is also taking programmers and developers jobs slowly ,we had a stackoverflow which used yo help us solve the problems but now we have chat gpt which not only just solves the problems but also auto corrects our program , and builds much greater apps and websites than an average programmer . So yeah the situation of programmers is also like photographers , cant blame programmers but surely AI does take the fun in this little things which requires manpower .
@@danielmanahan692 Clearly you understand nothing about photography and never even used a single camera or processed a single photo besides the ones on your phone. A lot of work goes into processing to make a photo look the way it does on your wall or screen, it does not automatically come out of a camera like that. Next time don’t embarrass yourself commenting on something you clearly know nothing about.
iStock and 123rf banned AI generated image like Shutterstock, but Shutterstock just cut the middlemen by allowing customers to generated within their site an AI picture based on their library and will pay you probably 0,0001$ for it. From all the company I'm registered with, Shutterstock is the greedier by far.
I think I have to agree with you there, Getty doesn't pay much either, but im loosing trust in Shutterstock, they have been my best performer for a long time, and now im not sure what to think about the future, I guess we will see!
@@wollertz Well, since March I'm registered to another site, freepik, they are Spanish but their core customers are from Asia. They pay a little like 0,06€ per download but with less photos on their site I do twice as much as Shutterstock, plus there is like only 30000 contributors for now. I'm aiming to be in about 20 sites just to be safe but with about 18K photos in my portfolio, I just regret not having done it from day one because it will take at least a year to do so now with my internet connection.

Haven’t tried yet, I only work with about 8 agencies I say about because bigstock is dead… I used to get payments every month for years I got paid every mo th, now it’s every 3 months, I have 30 000 images and to be honest I stopped submitting, similar with 123RF, I’m focusing on the ones that to sell like Adobe, shutterstock, alamy, Getty even Dreamstime seems to sell more than it used to, I’ll check out freepik thanks for the suggestion!
@@wollertz yeah bigstock and 123rf, I download there but just in case. EyeEm, is ok, photocase, I don't sell at all and 99% of what I submit is rejected (they go for a specific style, which is not mine), Twenty20 shut down in August, Canva I do sell sometime but I barely have 120 photos there for now, Pond5 is ok but overrated, after, I'm looking forward asian stock agency lately, westerners are few so, it sell for us. The ever changing business that ours ;)

I’ve had a great run with shutterstock, I do wish I got in early on, but still I agreed to most of their policies when I started, I now seem to have much better results with Adobe, but then again all off the agencies have ups and downs 🤷
Yeah its a tricky subject AI. I had a play with it for a little while and popped a few up on istock. Made a few quick sales then a few days later istock/getty banned all AI images all together. I can understand from the copyright and model release side of things. As for taking part of your images from SS to create AI, yeah that gives off a bit of a weird feeling ey. Hope they are very honest and you can get some revenue from it at least. Keep up the great vids mate. Cheers from chilly Japan.

Hi Woll, I think this topic has a lot of edges to talk. I'm a photographer and I've been making digital photos for at least 20 years now, I saw the evolution of a lot of processes and tools with which I've worked. Also, I'm an Architect when I start my career all my works need to be presented drawing by hand but for the moment that I was finishing all new students only worked with AutoCad, photoshop, and others but this didn't make them better than me as architects, they only have the skill to work with a different tool. Regarding the jobs, I think it's the same, works as drawers disappear from the Studios but a bunch of new jobs pops up like renderist, cadists, etc. You will lose the cashier work but a new work for who set up the pcs is going to appear, developers for those programs, QA, etc. From an artist's perspective I only feel that we have new tools, nothing else, creativity is something that AI can't emulate. I disagree with the business model of ST in this case, if they are going to use one of my images to generate a new one I will expect at least the same income as if someone downloads in a regular way. I encourage you to get it early in this new tech, we're not going to stop this "evolution", and I think that if we adopt new technologies in an early stage we always can succeed better as artists in the future. @@wollertz Im getting now into this world I guess because of that YT recommended me your video. I encourage you to try for example "nightcafe" to get some images to look how personalized it can be. I think that customers are looking for these kinds of personalized images that are the opposite of the image that you can find in the stock market. Today, I'm trying to figure out how can I make new images using AI but using my own stack of photos, this could be a future for photographers. Really nice debate

Thank you, it is very interesting to me, as far as stock photography is concerned more agencies are saying they are not accepting AI generated images, but it does have other uses, I have in the past used old technology, (nothing like today) to manipulate photos and create art, so I definitely see uses for it . Just getting started in this and have decades of images to go thru. Not sure if I should continue with Shutterstock and just look at other sites.
Things are constantly changing, Ive been at it for 12 years now, and trends come and go, some images sell now, that never sold before, and some of my most populars form 10 years ago stopped selling, don't get discouraged, its time to think outside the box a bit and put ourselves out there, The images are not doing anything locked up in a hard drive 🤷🏼, Adobe Stock is doing very well for me at the moment, Shutterstock is still king, but Adobe is catching up
PROMPT Imagination into existence... It's the response from big movie companies I am waiting for. The writing is on the wall. ShutterStock doesn't need to accept the images; OPENAI and MIDJOURNEY are the go-to's for all things Image-related and NOW, video-related...
It makes me wonder if a future in stock images for photographers is mainly editorial images
I’m sure there’s a future for both RF and editorials, trends come and go, and people will always need images. I think anyways 🤷
I tried out the Shutterstock ai today as an experiment and the images it came up with were not something i would buy as a graphic designer. Maybe my text prompts weren't what it needed but the result was crap. My problem with the current craze for AI is that it's potentially going to eliminate not just jobs but human creativity too. Humans have been making art and music since we all lived in caves. If AI takes writing, music, art, photography and design away from us, i can foresee a very unhappy and unfulfilled human race.
100% The only way AI is taking over arts is if we let it 🤷♂️, we vote with our dollar as consumers, some way want to go that rout but not everyone, what I call peaceful non participation

It's not a surprise really given the move to AI generated marketing materials - like AI generated social media influencers. If you can have an AI generated influencer, then photos should be straight forward, although it will be harder to do this for editorial photo and video. Still, it's hard to see where this all goes. From what I understand, the move away from people content to AI content is about removing people from the equation so that brands can have complete control of the output 24 hours a day.
I just can’t see how removing people will be a good thing from a marketing point of view, I hope there’s companies that will continue to support humanity and use real photographers with real people. Hard to tell!

I'm not sure that there will be a transparent royalty payment system. How will they count? All contributors will be compensated for each generated image, or for some percentage? How does the contributors know that the machine used its image to generate a new picture? It's not clear at all
That is all up to them and their tracking program (AI) if the final AI generated image sold used any of part of one of your images, then you will be compensated (or so they say) but that also goes to stock in general, I have to trust in the company, I have no idea of knowing if they are honest when it comes to the sale of images and fair pay to contributors, I have to trust in their system or find a new one I guess 🤷♂️

It’s not the end, people have been saying it’s the end of stock since it went digital 20 years ago, it might change a little but it’s not the end, we just have to learn how to adapt and create content that sells, I’m still selling photos from 10 years ago, when people told me to get out of stock, I’m glad I didn’t 🤷♂️

as you said, out of million of images there is people not finding what they need, so, that means there is not enough stock photography, it may sound crazy, but they wouldn't be using AI if it wasn't true
And I’m sure there’s trends, and as time changes it will go in circles, like when HDR came out first, it’s all settled down now, it’s interesting for sure, I just wish I knew the direction the industry is going!

The last part of your statement suggests AI is only being used because human generated images aren't meeting demands. You must also consider profitability. It will eventually be more profitable for Shutterstock to sell an image created by their AI than to sell an image created by one of their contributors. They pay the contributor $0.10, but the pay the AI nothing.
@@occipitalexposure5059 As far as I understand, If Shutterstock sells an AI generated file, they have to pay the contributors who's images AI used to create the final image, so they are still paying contributors, its just not as transparent
@@wollertz I think the logical assumption is that Shutterstock has done the math to determine how they can pay a small percentage and still profit. Remember, AI will be able to create 10years of images in maybe a few days worth of time. Now imagine the ratio of human sales : AI sales. Even if they paid us exactly the same percentage as now, human creators would account for a small fraction of their payroll.
It’s quite obvious that they want to make as much as they can out of an image but if there is 3-4 contributors to an image and they are paying a percentage to each , it’s really not worth posting there to be paid $0.04 / image this will inevitably discourage any photographer from using their site and perhaps removing images and or deleting accounts ?
I agree, other agencies already pay as low as $0.02 cents, Getty, deposit photos, even Alamy, I haven’t taken photos down because all the work is already done 🤷. I have slowed down the amount I submit because of this, but yet I still make a decent income from work I did years ago. So it’s a tough desicion for many including my self

Corporations business is to make a profit. I saw this coming when I first watched Jurassic Park. Yeah, stock agencies might not need any photographers at all about 10 years from now.
Right now it's no worries. Just look at the junk that's offered as "similar" images on your sales. It's laughable. Keep up your fine videos, I really enjoy them.

Take a look at that "computer vision" speech and its link to their "Data License" that they're now throwing many of your photos to. THAT is what you're talking about. You'll find an uptick in normally accepted photos now being accepted but they're putting a purple label on the approved photos saying the image is allowed for a data licensing only use. People's photos that sell in other sites and won competitions for, it's going to that AI training under Data License.
Out of the last 800 photos I’ve submitted 6 have gone to data licensing, it’s going to be interesting how this pans out 🤷♂️
@@wollertz I’m curious if these 6 are more “abstract” and or colorful in nature. I put in a photo from a hike, really good composition, space for something to be inserted top left, and it was funny because that was almost like 24 hours it got approved but put in Data Licensing. I’ve never seen Shutterstock move that fast on photos. I put in 10 different photos, 3 others were move to data licensing. People online tell you it’s because your photos suck. 😂 🤷
they were similar images to the ones that got accepted, all coastal landscapes. The idea behind Data Licensing is that they would use photos that otherwise would have been rejected. I uploaded 100 more yesterday from the same trip, 30 got rejected for similar images and 1 went to data licensing @@DrunkPhotography
If AI creates a composite image from multiple original images, each contributor should be paid for their original image, in full. Not a percentage. The buyer of an AI image should pay accordingly. Question: How would using only yourself in images actually protect you from AI?
I can see your point, and agree but that’s not how the industry is choosing to pay their contributors, it’s a tough situation to be in, and I’m assuming it has all been decided by lawyers and high executives of the companies
Designers and companies that rely on stock photography would be using it, as a designer on a marketing team, we generally only hire photographers for large campaigns as they are expensive and you really need to know what you want to shoot. Because of that we use alot of stock imagery for daily tasks. I can tell you from experience, especially in todays cultural climate, finding the correct imagery that is of high quality and fits your companies branding AND that ticks of the correct diversity and inclusion boxes are nearly impossible. It takes up SIGNIFICANT portions of my day to constanly search for a suitable image. Stock has not caught up to todays needs. THAT is who is ordering this, at least until it becomes far less time consumiong searcing through thousands of photos to find the one that fits your needs.

More and more people are using AI photos, but there’s also a big need for real photography, I’ve seen many fads come and go in my years in stock, I’m sure AI is here to stay, but I don’t think it’s here to replace 🤷♂️ I’ve been wrong many times, but I just don’t see it for this

You’re questioning the wrong thing. It’s not that we can’t take pictures. It’s that companies will save millions of dollars by not paying individual human beings. Instead they will have AI do all the work. Same thing that happened during the Industrial Revolution and then with the IT revolution which is continuing now.

And no one takes into the fact that artists are now exploited and cheated because the property rights cost a lot and belong to the author. They should ask if the artist agrees to take part in this project. If they didn't ask and they didn't pay the same rate as for the original commercial license on their platform, it means they did it illegally.
AI-generated images are very problematic. I feel old school when I prefer real photos, unedited, unfiltered. Real talent is great photos without Photoshop, and now AI. AI and photo manipulation should be in another category: Photo Art. Art has a place, but AI is taking from real artists. On one side, it has its place as a tool for low-budget projects and artists who don't have the money to create the art they need, but it's such silent plagiarism. I think an AI that should be ok, should be from people volunteering art to it, not simply ripping off the internet. That said, I personally could not create art I wanted with it. It also felt too impersonal and generic in style. I don't have a proper answer on how to protect or remunerate artists whose creations contributed to AI. I just know it makes me cringe at the artificial world we're heading, where fantasy is over taking natural beauty.

I’ve already commented on some of your videos, Steve, which have been helpful. A part-time photographer years ago now long retired, I was excited to dip into stock photography, even knowing that I would never do it to the extent needed to be highly successful like someone like you at my age. That was OK. I got out of Shutterstock almost immediately, and settled with Getty, which accepted my work. I have been contributing and will stay there for now, but found this video searching around after reading some very current comments by photographers about the AI situation. I can see already where this is going and how it will leave smaller people like me with nearly nothing to show for our efforts. I’m an artist, have a good eye and can create content, so I will concentrate on that, and figuring out the best way to market POD prints & products. We’re all having sadly to adapt to a world that really doesn’t give a shit about human beings anymore.

Hi, cant you just add your watermark to the photos when you upload to shutter stock.
Watermarks are not acceptable for stock photography, the images would get rejected immediately, and if I understand the email correctly AI is learning from an image, and its tags and description, the more it learns the more it can generate a useful image =, its amazing what AI is going today, kinda scary actually
I create songs and often I want an image that represents a certain story concept that my song represent, and use it as a thumbnail in SoundCloud.
it is extremely difficult to find any image that fits what I am looking for.
I am looking forward to some kind of ai that can combine pictures to generate an image of all the specifications of what I want so I don't have to compromise by choosing a different image.
sure i can create it myself with hundreds of hours using a 3d software, but that isn't worth it. I can pay actors and shoot it myself, again not worth it. I would rather have ai do it for me. so I can spend my time making music not creating thumbnails for the music.
and even with billions or trillions of photos on shutterstock, it won't have the images I want. way too hard to find pictures that depict a story.

We the consumers are demanding the images ... Countless times we go to shutterstock and not get the image we want and end up needing to shoot it instead...
Plus everytime we take a photo in shutterstock it's has a high percentage that it's going to have been taken by another company already. If you generate one thats going to be unique at least in theory.
I'm seeing here is a person loosing a job and complaining about it and that's natural. Like coal miners loosing their jobs. You didn't mind when AI were solving your problem but complain when it solves others because it bypasses you now.

This is not a problem of copyright... it's about justice... AI does the same that humans when are indpired by other ones... compensate inspirators is an option, non a duty from a legal point of view. Photographers can show reality, AI does not. There are digital influencers right now but the most of people prefer the real ones.

People will just generate the photos they need and not spend money on them. Shutterstock will go belly up.
I’m sure that will happen for a bit, but big companies will put an end to it. The main thing with shutterstock at the moment is that AI creates by sourcing from pictures. So any image AI created using other pictures to sample from and and create it, in that case there would be licensing issues and royalties due to the original image that the rendering was sampled from, which puts lots of trust on AI and companies keeping track of this

I agree, I want to be realistic and prepare for changes, but also look for opportunity, AI won’t know future trends until it has time to learn, new clothing, new social events, news, etc, there’s still a lot of opportunities and possibilities
Contributing still images for pennies is not worth it. Video is where it's at, and so far Shutterstock by and large hasn't reduced video commissions to pennies, but video sales are a lot more infrequent.
video definitely pays more, but photos are easier and less time consuming, I do both, and see a big difference, I just don't think its dead yet 🤷♂️

I don't think that's a positive development for the contributors. Everything is getting worse and worse. For example, since Wirestock last introduced its premium program, people have sometimes waited weeks for photos to be checked. This is nothing more than an urge to set up a premium account..
I have 30 videos waiting over 60 days.... Until I see life changing results I don't want to upgrade to premium 😅.
Us contributors usually end up with the wrong side of the stick 😅. I knew what to expect when I got started with stock, I didn't know how it was going to change, but I knew it was a way to get paid while I learned, I never saw it as a full time thing, yet here I am 12 years later, making most of my income from Stock Photography, not sure what the future holds, but as usual time to adapt!
I think they need a lot of customers and your pictures and everyone else, to help the A.I to understand the prompts and generate better pictures, but sooner or later, when they're are confident 100% that the A.I model they work with, can generate accurate results, they'll will pull the plug on all the photographers and artists, and be like, we are sorry, now we have a model that can generate a better pictures than yours, and it cost us nothing.
I hope not. But this is where we photographers depend on the buyers to demand real images and not AI renderings, we are people have the ability to choose, and I hope we choose wisely 😅

@@marklimbrick it’s actually good advise, unless you actually like what you do, most people enjoy photography but the business aspect is tough and not for everyone, just like the ones that quit when digital came along because they couldn’t handle the change ( or didn’t want to change) the trick is to evolve as the industry evolves, diversify and continue to adapt as things change, otherwise we will end up in therapy and with no job 🤷♂️

@@IllusionSectorit is, I totally agree, the sad reality in my opinion is that as a society we keep getting further and further away form reality, at the same time disconnecting ourselves from the world and all others in it. Im a big proponent of voting with your dollar, If theres somethingI don't like i wont buy it, I don't want AI in everything so I wont pay for it 🤷♂, I have used Chat GPT in a couple of videos but only to prove it can replace experience.

Shutterstock Account Termination: A Refugee's Dilemma Amid War
Shutterstock has blocked my account, which I have been actively working on for 5 years and generating passive income from. As a citizen of Ukraine, I am a victim of the war, a refugee. My city is completely destroyed, I am from the frontline zone of Ukraine, where active warfare is ongoing. And to add to this, Shutterstock has blocked my account. Unfortunately, they are not providing me with any response. The contract states that Shutterstock can terminate the agreement at any time. It's a very strange and unclear situation. Please help me understand this.
That happens with many countries, unfortunately I'm not sure how to solve the problem. i will look into this a bit more.
‘A job I wasn’t trained for’ 😂😂😂. You need trained to scan your items and tap a screen? Oh bless, life must be hard for you. And no, as a Brit, those jobs haven’t all gone - some, yes, but they’ve just moved them to stock roles. Nobody here is crying about it.
As for the struggle of finding a decent image in stock - yes, most stock is rubbish and you can rarely find what you want. AI will be great. Stock footage takes very little talent.
Not too long ago in the uS and in other countries like Costa Rica, I remember not only someone scanning your items but also someone bagging and helping you bring the bags to your vehicle, not because as individuals we couldn't do it, it was simply a service to improve the customer experience.
Things are always changing and evolving AI has its usage, some people are thrilled, some are not, my photo sales and so are muy footage sales which I suppose puts me in the more talented category 🤷♂
Shutterstock is killing their own business model with AI, and its not only shutter stock that is doing this

This stock world is completely upside down :( I love new things but not stupid things...or maybe I am wrong? I thing ,,greedy,, is the corporations ,,demon,, but who jump high he will fall low.
As long as there’s a “need” or perceived need for AI generated things, we will continue to introduce them everywhere… simple supply and demand. I just don’t get who’s demanding so much fake reality 😅
We will see soon :) but for friends and family I will prefer real photo :)

😅I’m sure that’s what the original stock photographers said when it all went digital, the game is changing, but I don’t know that I want to give up just yet!
It is not the need for more pictures. It is only that they want to pay as little as possible for it and this will make it super cheap.
Also it is really stupid for shutterstock to go this way, because honestly, the way it is going right now, people will not need shutterstock to create images.
My recommendation to all contributors would be, to pull your content from the platform as quickly as possible and prohibit them from using your content.
Read the terms and get out of their somehow!

@@wollertz The thing is, it is impossible to remove yourself after shutterstock trained their model.
All the value you produced to make money will be rightfully owned and used by shutterstock to create infinite new pictures and they don't have to pay anyone anymore.
Their will only be value if photographers stay long enough for the value of their content to be removed from them.
You want to be valued for what you do, you need to go where you'll be valued.
They already only give yo ten cents.
After it is trained, they don't need you anymore.
The copyright will be with them, because it is a database owned and legally optained by them.
This will only fail if most artists and photographers will get out of their as long as they still can, so better spread the word.
If you leave you have the chance to make money in the future, if you stay you might make a little more money for some time.
@@wollertz You know what, after seeing what Adobe is doing now, it probably doesn't even matter, because Shutterstock will be out of business soon :D Adobe is ahead and most of their loyal customerbase is with Adobe already anyway and if they get Adobe firefly, they'll stop using shutterstock anyway.
I think it's too late for the Shutterstock creators, they probably already made copies. These corporations are not honest, they are greedy for money. It's like with charitable foundations, they say that the money goes to those in need, but many times it turned out that this was not the case, only organizations took it. Companies and organizations lie all the time and make fools of us. Shutterstock won't tell you that your image has been used, don't count on it, a small percentage of creators will get paid a microscopic amount and most won't even know. Everybody lies. It's good that I never started selling on these well-known platforms, I felt that the money was too small compared to your property rights.
well, back to wedding photography then. I just started doing Stockphotography and my first images where excepted,.....damn
I wouldn't quit just yet, im still selling photos form 10 years ago, stock always goes thru fads and even though AI is here to stay I believe at the moment its a novelty and pretty soon we will go back to natural images again
@@wollertz Thanks :) no I won't stop, I was joking. I've only just started and my first set of photos have been approved. And it's what you also say in other videos, stock photography is especially great to do, you feel more involved in your photography and you broaden your horizons. Among other things. It's just really fun to do, from a to z. I also think real photography and Ai in any form will go together in the near future. You shouldn't hold it back as a photographer.
