Shutterstock vs. Alamy: Where did my stock photos earn more money?
HTML-код

- Shutterstock and Alamy are both stock platforms that I have used to bring in passive income. In this video, I compare earnings between photos that I posted on both sites. Which one generated more income in the long run? Keep in mind this is my PERSONAL experience. Perhaps other people have the opposite experience.

And you mean a lot to us. Always good to see you, Nicole! Best wishes for continued (and growing) success!
Shutterstock used to be on the top in terms of sales, but in the last few months Adobe surpassed it. It's also interesting to see how even if i have the same images on both, a part from the editorial ones, the top sellers are totally different.
I've also been uploading consistently in Alamy over the past 2 years, and i've had some sporadic sale. Personally i don't spend too much time on it, i just upload the pictures and fine tune them from time to time, luckilythe upload process is very easy. But this month something magic happened and i sold 3 images for 320$ each! That was quiet motivating, so i will def continue uploading there. Too bad i can't know who bought them!
Which platform did you sell for 320$
If they get used online a reverse image search can sometimes find them.
Could you tell me how to set the price for the photos, I thought that Alamy and all the stock pages set the price, what is the direct link to the Alamy prices section? I would like to set my own prices. Thank you for your help and for answering me.
Hi Nicole, I am fairly new, and therefore late, to the stock photography experience and I am an avid follower of your channel. I have more images on Alamy than I do on Shutterstock, but, out of over three hundred views on Alamy, I have not even had one person zoom in and zero sales. At least on Shutterstock I have a couple of sales. I really need to up my game so please, I know you were doing a bit of soul searching recently about your channel, please, please keep posting these videos, they really help.

Thank you Nicole. I really like straight to the point video, without 'fill in'. I just started on Shutterstock a few weeks ago, and now that I got the hang of it, I will stick with them for now. I upload mixed photos taken with a prime 50mm on a secondhand 5d Mkii. Although I only made $1.50 from six downloads (editorial), I can see the type of photos that sell. Stay Safe
We are just getting started with stock photography. I got a lot of good information from your video. Thanks
Love the live news story! I was in Hong Kong during the first round of protests and I had uploaded a bunch of photos from them. Alamy contacted me requesting more info and told me they were putting them out on the news feed and they seemed excited. I did not get any news sales from them. I sold some later including a book cover, but nothing at the time. Since they have been brought out, Live News access is much more limited. But Alamy is the only agency I really make money at. I have been there 16 years and should cross $500,000 in gross sales next month (around $225k net). Outside of Pond 5, I have not crossed $1,000 with any other agency. I sometimes think i should make my own video 😂😂😂
Please do. I love your experience. It is motivating.
Thanks Nicole, for posting just the information I was looking into. I will try them both, and will share my experience. The very idea of you taking off to take pictures at Alamy's request with no contract sheds light on how this industry operates.
We have to be more innovative at getting paid our effort's as we are creative with the content we create!
Thanks so much for covering this topic Nicole, it was very helpful info. Loved reading your responses which was very informative as well.
I’m new in the photography world, your video really inspired me, I’m signing up for shutterstock right away, thanks Nic 🤘🏼
Fascinating. It seems that I've made a huge mistake by using Alamy exclusively based on this & other videos. Thank you for sharing, Rich.
Glad it was helpful!
I've only uploaded to Shutterstock so far. I've got 59 photos loaded and had 10 sales for a total of $7.26. I'm happy with that though because it's focussed my mind on improving my commercial photography in general.
what? I get a quarter no matter what.. grrrr
@@_gatsby I usually get a quarter but for one photo I got $3+ and for another I got $1.88. No idea why! The first one was a London nightclub decorated for its birthday. The second was the Scottish flag flying in the wind at a harbour.
Loren's London You’ve been lucky! I’ve sold 48 so far but all for .25, except for two images. The highest amount I got was $1.88.
Thanks Nicole. My main gig is real estate photography which slows down towards the end of the year so I popped on this video for inspiration. I sell on Shutterstock, Adobe, some on Blackbox and noththing on iStock. I'll be uploading more stock content over the slow months. If only keywording didn't take so long :)
I’ve been on shutterstock 1 1/2 year and have only uploaded 52 pictures of my dog and have made over $77 in that time. I have uploaded the same pictures to iStock and had 9 downloads totalling $12. I will try other stock sites and do more pictures of other things then just my dog 😂
Wow, you must have a pretty good looking dog! It's a hard category to compete in. Definitely look into Adobe Stock :)
Nicole Glass thank you I will. I’m very lucky she is beautiful but very active which is the majority of the pictures sold. I have a good idea what sells now for the next time I take pictures or editing. I do like your videos by the way. Thank you 😊
Hi nichole completely knew to the stock photography game..I been on shutterstock for 6 months and have had 23 downloads and a good many was on demand...Thanks for all the information
My first sale was with Alamy back in 2012, made $275 on 1 photo, since then I have made about $50 with several photos on Alamy. Shutterstock is consistent, little money but lots of downloads.
Witch is best
For you
Hi Giovanni. Did you set the price
On your photo sale of $275 or did Alamy? Or does it depend on other specifics. Thanks
@@yazhassan5214 Alamy set the price.
Hello Nicole, enjoyed the Shutterstock VS. Alamy. I actually do up load to both but have stopped uploading to Alamy because of not having a single SALE on that platform to date. Although I find that shutterstock should be paying the artist more, my work sells a lot on Shutterstock. I mainly upload commercial work but have also sold editorial photos as well. On the other hand, I do upload to Adobestock and find that I make about 50% more money with them compared to shutterstock with much less downloads. AdobeStock pay’s artist more and tends to sell my photo’s at a higher price point. I started in the game much later, My first uploads in Stock was in August 2018 with steady growth each month. Thanks for the great video 👍🏼
Hi Manny. I'm registering on Alamy, have you sold at least 100 dollars on Alamy or absolutely nothing? Could you help me send me the link to fill out the w8ben form on Alamy, I can't find the link.
Good mentorship video.
I have had similar experiences over 2.5 years. Of all of the sites (Alamy, ShutterStock, Adobe, IStock/Getty etc) I have found ShutterStock (SS) is the volume site. So I upload all of my images there. If I have a very special image and my gut tells me that it is worth it I will add to all sites. But I watch my performance on SS and once I see an image that is constantly downloaded I will make sure I add it to all of the others.
I think the theme of what you are getting at is how to best manage your time spent uploading images. There is definitely something to that.
Keep up the videos as you are really building a nice collection of stock photographer lifestyle clips.
Phil R I upload all the same photos onto to Shutterstock, iStock and Alamy (and if commercial, I also upload it to Adobe). My best seller on iStock is NOT my best seller on the other two. What sells on one site does not necessarily sell on another. Not sure why that is.
Dazzling Deb different professional audiences. That said it keeps non sellers from taking my time
Alamy is mostly outside US it seems and Getty is more traditional national media, print and graphic artists when I see them Used...istock tends toward local news and bloggers
Adobe is strong graphic artist use
Phil R Thanks for that info. It’s helpful.
Thank you, this helped me a lot. I'm just starting out with stock photography to improve my skills. I'm not a pro in photography, and regular practice is something I need. I've been thinking about using SS to upload quantity of photos, and when my skills improve, start to upload better photos on other platforms too. :)
You make great video presentations A+. I have to start looking into uploading photographs. Thank you Nicole
Glad it was helpful!
I haven't started trying to sell any of my images for stock purposes yet, but watching your videos is definitely making me consider trying Shutterstock.
It's a tough journey but a fun one :)
Hi, nicole you are doing a great job, as sharing you experience, this is definitely a great help for me.thanks.
Thank you! I’m glad you find it helpful :)
Thank you Nicole for sharing lime you do!-
I have the same experiences with the two platforms. Lots of downloads at Shutterstock, most of them for rather small amounts of money. Only ten sales at Alamy but those brought me 5 to 20 dollar per sale. Overall however Shutterstock makes me about ten times as much money as Alamy. But since uploading to Alamy is very easy, I keep doing so.
I uploaded 500 photos to Alamy 6 months ago and haven't sold any yet :( I have the best return with Adobe Stock.
I don't have that many up only a couple hundred but I never sold one photo with alamy whereas I've done well with Shutterstock and Adobe stock
@@lctrail
Would you tell me please, what kind of photos preferred in Shutterstock vs Adobe stock ?
I'm a beginner and i don't know the difference.
Thank you
@@Balconatube honestly I'm still kind of figuring that out myself. One thing I've noticed is Shutterstock is much more accepting of phone images than Adobe. Another thing is Shutterstock will accept editorial submissions and Adobe will not.

They probably sold them and didn't tell you
Hi Nicole I am a real “newbie” in stock photography but old age actually in photography terms.
I only have 119 photos with shutterstock but have already had success with downloads so I plan to upload some every day
All depends what photos ... probably same as yours , or your skills sucks or not adding accurate keywords , title , description
In my opinion, at present, the strongest competitor for Shutterstok is AdobeStock, the rest are not competitive
My adobe stock overtook my Shutterstock
Sergiy Akhundov I have found it difficult to sell on Adobe Stock. Alamy too. I think it’s because they cost more per download when compared to Shutterstock. The one that’s neck and neck with Shutterstock is iStock. I’ve sold one more image on Shutterstock than iStock, but I’ve made more money on iStock.
Also, noticed that my content uploads to "graphic resources" in Adobe stock out performs my other - but that may just be the nature of my content(3d renders)
Good one Nicole. Same finding as you. What was interesting is that i sold a 3d wireframe render of a predator drone on Alamy for 175usd, and it was used in the Washington drone museum at an exhibition. And for some other news.....i found a niche in shutterstock which is not saturated at all, in fact, there were only one photo before i started uploading to it a week ago, already made some nice sales off it
What's the niche Hubert? Wink wink, lol.
@@SteveAtkinsonFineArt i can tell you if there is a way to private message

Thanks, Nicole Glass for sharing your experience about stock photography, my most photos editorial type i earn little but earn SS.
It all was true before June 2020. Now I’m refocusing on Alamy again
Hi Nicole,
Interesting analysis. I have pretty much the same images on both SS and Alamy (in fact more on Alamy as RM exclusive) and I make on average 4x per month on SS. I pretty much just submit everywhere (10+ agencies) and RF and let the market decide. Stocksubmitter is a godsend in this case.
All the best,
Alex
Interesting to hear your experience! Thanks for sharing.
Could you please share what are the other agencies?
Hey Nicole, love your work. Question. You speak of the platform, which WAY did you upload images to Alamy. Royalty Free or Rights Managed?
Thanks for sharing!!
Hi,
Really enjoy your videos and appreciate your sharing your wealth of knowledge regarding stock photography. I would like to get into stock photography but confused as to where to start, in particular what photos to upload for the initial screening. I have an library of over 20k photos of various subjects: landscapes, wildlife, flowers, trees, abstracts, etc. Is it better to upload beautiful images or the ones that are not so saturated and interesting but less glamorous? Or is it more important at the initial screening that they be good quality regardless of subject matter? Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Great Video!
thank you!
one is micro-stock so that really answers the question, one has a news service, one has contracts with uk newspapers
Hi Nicole, thanks for your sharing video. I have a question about the dimension and resolution. Can you give me the best resolution and dimension to upload on stock market? Thanks a lot
thanks for sharing!
I have tried so many platforms and I keep coming back to Shutterstock. It's just my workflow now. I know I should upload to as many sites as I can but I concentrate on Shutterstock and it pays off.
Other sites to time consuming ...if not create your own website and sell there
I also had bad experience with alamy, on shutterstock and adobestock I have a good shot !!
I'm not reading or watching before I guess Shutterstock. ... Now on to the video!
How do you caption your Shutterstock photos? Thanks! Your videos are so informative.
As usual you are fantastic. Question, Are there any photos that you feature only on Alamy now , since you did these two in competition? IE News heavy vs other that do better in SS? Am I making sense? See you around.
Alamy pays 50% if you exclusively upload images to them. They sell for higher prices. They have a very user friendly site. I wouldn't bother putting images anywhere else or you risk undercutting yourself.
Why wouldn't you ??
thanks for the video
Great insights thank you!
Glad you enjoyed them
@@NicoleGlass Just gave shutterstock a try and got all my architectural work rejected for not having image releases even tho was shot on abandoned public property. What are some tips for getting approved/bypassing all this?
@@MichaelShatravka Make sure you don't include the name of the buildings or anything in your description or keywords if you want to submit it as commercial (sometimes that will prompt the rejection). Look up other abandoned buildings on SS to see how they were uploaded. If it still gets rejected, then upload them as editorial images. The reviewing system is not black and white, different reviewers make different decisions :/
@@NicoleGlass Thank you so much for this detailed response gonna try again hopefully get it work!
Hi Nicole, I believe in you, I am a new photographer and I am very interested to learn more, you are my leader, thanks.
aww thank you
Hi Nicole, thank you very much for all your information and advice.
I registered as a contributor in Alamy few days ago, and I've seen the option of "distribution" that can be activated for all the accepted pictures, in my account config (another distribution partners channels to get more sales, I suppose). Do you recommend to use it?
Hi, i sold 10 photos on Alamy last year and earned 170 $, this year i sold 7 photos and earned 236 $ but sales are rare. My best sales in 1-Istock 2-Shutterstock 3-Adobe 4-Alamy but not same amount of images and footages on them.
This is really interesting. I've never heard of Alamy. As a buyer I just want to go to the place with the biggest volume of photos available.
It's very UK based and news heavy. I think it's primarily used for journalism.
@@NicoleGlass No there is a huge amount of worldwide images on Alamy and also archive or historical images which SS don't have so much of. They also sell live news and also editorial style images do very well.
I signed up with iStock in 2007. All I had was a point and shoot camera which just didn’t cut it for stock back then. Fast forward to 2017 & semi-professional gear. I signed up with Alamy SS and a few others. Within a month one of my photos on Alamy sold for $250.00, was 50 50 split back then. Sold a few more on Alamy, my take was over $400.00 in several months. Alamy was way ahead of the pack. With in 2 years SS has finally caught up and
surpassed Alamy in $$$. This year my sales on Alamy are very slow. SS on the other hand, sales are increasing every month.
What is better sold there? Not a secret? What size portfolio is needed to start sales?
Hi Nicole it's a great video from you.
I have a question, have you ever sell your commisioned photo's to microstock agency?
Thanks for sharing with us, good video! Guys, don't forget, this video is 2 years old, now Shutterstock pays only 10 cents per image, at that time was 25 average price
Yup!
I have not sold a single image on Alamy yet. I don't have as many photos there as I do on Shutterstock, but still… On Adobe Stock I sell here and there. Definitely ShSt has been so far the best one for me. And BTW, something curious happened just last month: I had been steadily selling on average 20-30 USD a month on ShSt, but just as I cracked the 1500th upload mark, I jumped to 74 USD in Sept, and this month I already have 117 USD, and October isn't even over yet. Coincidence? I try to upload constantly, but I only do a few at once. Now I stand at 1535 images total.
I agree completely
I uploaded to shutterstock, bigstockphoto, alamy, 123rf and istock.
Shutterstock is the only agency I had sales with.
Hi Nicole! Even though I just starting out and have small portfolio in shutter stock but I get more download from shutter stock then other three.
For me as a european definitely Adobe Stock.
Adobe Stock does relatively well for me as well :)
@@NicoleGlassHello Nicole, but, how can you upload editorial images in Adobe stock? Because currently, I can't submit images to editorial. Have you being invited by Adobe to join the editorial submission?
@@alvaro_bueno I only upload commercial images to Adobe Stock. Unfortunately they do not accept editorial images from individual contributors.

sure thing!
Awesome. Do you upload photo video on others
stocks? Do you know about stocksubmitter?
I was on Alamy more than 10 years ago exclusively, and I never sold a photo. They were all keyworded, and titled. I basically decided that Alamy just sucks. So now I'm going to give Shutterstock a try.
For myself, Alamy seems to be a harder to crack into. I believe that Alamy has more of a UK customer base and therefore my American images just don't seem to capture the attention. Shutterstock works better for me. I can relay on volume and repeat sales on Shutterstock. So, I am almost ready to give-up on Alamy.
Thank you so much for the helpful information, Nicole! I have one question - do you see the sales go down if you don't upload photos on Shutterstock regularly? Thank you in advance!
When I don't upload regularly, I do see my earnings decrease. But other people may have a different experience.
I have submitted several pictures in shutterstock and only one picture is approved. the others are rejected
Can i upload pictures made with my phone?(samsung s10)
I only do commercial, stock photography and of the 7 agencies I upload to, Alamy is the worst. SS brings me $ 1k per month, Alamy only $ 10-20. Alamy did a great marketing campaign and most of the authors fell for it, however, it is an agency that has no future with commercial microstock photography. Thanks Nicole.
Thanks! I'm curious, how long have you been doing stock photography? Seems like you definitely know what you're doing :)

Sure thing :)
Thanks for the video
When they asked you to do work they didn’t pay for the task?
I have had a similar experience with Alamy. I have made a couple sales on there but nothing compared to Shutterstock. I have had people tell me that Alamy is sometimes better for newsworthy photos which my photos aren't so that could be why.
Hi nicole. Could you give me the Alamy link, so I can fill out the w8ben form, I can't find that option anywhere on the Alamy page. Thanks for your help Nicole.
Hi Nicole, I think there is one major thing you did not mention in this video. Alamy is a MACROstock site, while SS is a MICROstock site. It makes a really big difference. As you say, you started in 2017, so on Alamy 2 years time is not enough to judge anything. To compare a macro and a micro site is like comparing cats and dogs :-) And one more thing: I have heard that Alamy now performs better in the USA than in the UK... (reading the Alamy forum, there are several non-UK contributors that reach massive monthly income).
All valid points :)
And yes... analysis is always better done with more time.
What is your personal experience on Alamy?
@@NicoleGlass As for me, I have been uploading to Alamy for only 1 year with 3 sales (one of them is 3 digit). I read their forum very often, and I meet there a lot of inspiring experience from contributors being on Alamy for several years. Another thing that may cause low sale number on Alamy comparing to SS (or other micro) is if you upload the same collection to both micro and macro sites. My personal experience: two of my niche photos were viewed on Alamy, then on the same day bought on SS for pennies. So it is obvious that customers search for the cheapest, if it is a niche photo they want. Maybe it was the case with your Trump photo? We don't know for sure, but could be. All the best for you!
Nicole, do you get luck on your referral links? I managed to get some good blackbox referral subs but no luck on the shutterstock front.
Not really. I’ve had hundreds of sign ups but most people make accounts and never really upload much
Hi Nicole, of all the Stock site I upload to I sell more on Shutter Stock
Please make a video about offset
After the horrible commission cuts in the new Alamy contract, that starts on July 1st, I am looking for an Alamy alternative. If I do not find one, I will give many photos to free photo websites. I often use photos from those free websites myself and would like to give something back to others.
Alamy & Shutterstock have two very different business models, which is probably where the difference lies. Over a period of 7 years Alamy is lagging behind by 50% and I upload the same photos to both sites. Shutterstock is the winner! 😉 @TTStock
Good to know ...what about dreamstime ???
Does Alamy allow people from all over the globe to be part of their photographers/sellers? And I'd also want to know whether an approval is required in order to join...
Thanks! ❤️
As always, such a nice post comparing the two stock platforms. I personally feel a photographer needs encouragement with the number of downloads. So, I prefer SS. 🙂
Thanks! Glad you found it helpful. Yes, SS is definitely the platform of quantity...
I uploaded 60 pictures to both shuttertock and adobe stock. Got 18 sells on shutterstock and just 1 sell on adobe, over he same period of time.
I have some success with EyeEm a European stock photography community of sort. I live in California, but not sure why I've joined it a few years ago:-) I've joined Shutterstock a few months ago.
I’ve sold two photos on shutterstock in the first month Alamy squat
Thanks for the helpful video.
Quick question: have you done a similar compare between SS and Alamy, but with photos that aren't uploaded to both? Given how easy it is to search for a photo on google, I imagine people would shop around for the best deal. $1-5 on SS vs nearly $20 on Alamy.
I'm just starting out (5 months, 300 photos on each) and I noticed that my SS photos start selling about a week after I upload the same photo to Alamy. Do customers shop around like this?
Valid point. I think there’s definitely plenty of individuals who shop around. Maybe not everyone. Companies I’ve worked for, for example, will always end up buying from the same site that they’re used to and price isn’t an issue. But individuals usually search for better prices
@@NicoleGlass thank you for your insights.
How to upload popular characters photoes to shutterstock web.?
Love from Pakistan. Question is how to write metadata in alamy after passing QC .

Hi Nicole! May I ask how did you get a model release for publishing that photo of Pres. Trump? Thanks!
How do you get model permissions everytime? I've just started playing with stock photography and even people photographed from the back requires a release!?
I upload those photos as editorial images
It should be obvious that the downloads from Shutterstock undercut Alamy's pricing ability, especially if you have the same image at both sites. In effect you are actually actively undercutting yourself. If a buyer can pick up the same photo from Shutterstock for pennies, why would they pay a fair price (to the photographer) on Alamy? It is my experience that stock photography license fees are trending down dramatically in the last 10 years. In 2010 my sales with Alamy averaged a return of $84.44 per license. By 2019 that has now trended down to $26.45. 2020 looks to be returning even less. It's a reality that stock photography is now a game for amateurs, happy to be making pin money.
Hmmm, if u uploading what everyone is uploading lol
Most of my photos on Shutterstock r getting rejected due main subject out of focus
yeah it really disappointed , sometimes I really hated them
Yeah it's the same for me, can you give me some info about it that how can I get it done correctly ?
Do you know Nicole......If you give up on a site can you take the £7.50 you spent 200 hrs making when you close your (ones) account? If not then these corporates are potentially making big bucks out of left over peanuts that the disenchanted are unable to retrieve... Hmmm 🤔
U have so nice content mam. Mam when I post a photo with logo can you tell me the catalogy ? And one more thing if I post a protest photo is it required property release or model release?
It usually depends how the photo will be used. For 'editorial' you don't need any releases. You only need releases for commercial advertising usage.
Defiantly Shutterstock Cz the downloading frequency in more higher than the other stock agencies in the market right now
I have been with Alamy since a few years after it started and the cut was then 60% to the photographer. It went down to 50% (16% cut)and the other year almost went down to 40% but stayed at 50% for exclusive images but from 1st June the photographer cut will be 30% for most people and 40% for those who have an annual turnover of more than $250. Also prices have been sliding down from $300+ to an average of $15.
Alamy are not pros in any sense of the word. They will encourage you to chase anything in order to stock their site.
Very deceptive practice !! Wonder if she telling the true or what ? Should've show the email if they really said that
Is there an opportunity taking pictures of older places and landmarks in Europe like in Spain or Greece?
Dude, people buy anything . Don't matter what it is...go shoot, a crack building or something
How about Adobe Stock if compared with Shutterstock?
Adobe Stock can be great. But they do not accept editorial images. Considering the majority of what I shoot is editorial, it's hard to compare them. But for those people who shoot primarily commercial, I would highly recommend Adobe.
I think Adobe Stock take editorial but only if you are employed by Getty (or something like that).
How about now 3 years later. How do they compare?

Nicole Glass I do ok on Adobe but without editorial it’s not near as good as SS.
I’ve actually have better results in istock (Getty) than in shutterstock or Alamy or adobe. I pretty much have the same photos in all 4. The problem with istock is the steep payout amount ($100).
Jose A Yes, I agree about the payout price. I’ve sold 48 on Shutterstock and 47 on iStock but I’ve made so much more $$ on iStock. Once I actually get paid, that is.
