    Checking out the picks that I've become totally addicted to! Chickenpicks are a super-hard plastic pick with a belvelled edge that creates an excellent attack! Pinch harmonics are a breeze with these!

    Hey Glen, just wanted to leave a quick bit of love for your channel. My singer and I (i being the bass player) have been using your videos to help us while we track our bands ep, So far the tracks sound better than we could have ever imagined and we are very happy with the product. Ill be recommending your channel to fellow bands and musicians looking for recording advice for as long as there is air in my lungs. Much love from Buffalo N.Y.

    Then your video came in for chicken picks review.
    CS guitars before you has up to 9mm thick!!!! 50CAD each ;(
    WOOOW they get thick, from my 2.0 Dunlop, to 2.7mm tri edge.

    I agree, recently got few different models and Badazz III is pretty awesome. I made it even better by sanding away some of the sharp edge on the back to make them more comfortable to the hand. They are super precise and sound like you have turned on a treble booster :)

    Thanks for turning me on to the Chicken Picks Glenn. I procrastinated on buying some for a long time, because I've been using, and was happy with using Jazz III's for over a decade. • @behemothokun

    2.2mm is way to thick; I have yet to find better picks then the 0.88mm Dunlop Tortex. I would try the Chickenpicks if they had thinner ones.

    • @JoshuaConnorMusic
      @JoshuaConnorMusic 9 лет назад +7

      Behemothokun They have 2mm ones, but I'm guessing due to the material they use and how their bevels are carved, any less would might not be feasible. To me, anything under 1mm is basically stiff paper. I don't see what benefit it'd have, thin tone, weaker, less accurate as they give more, resulting in not being able to play as fast, can't dig in etc. I have a few tortex picks lying around and I am yet to find a situation where they are any good. The lowest I'll go is 1.10mm.

    • @Infighter_
      @Infighter_ 9 лет назад +2

      Behemothokun Have you tried Tortex sharps 1.35

    • @behemothokun
      @behemothokun 9 лет назад

      Infighter I'm not a fan of the sharp variants of the Tortex picks, regardless of thickness. Of the rounded ones, I have thicker ones laying around, but I tend to use the 0.88mm the most. I would try a chickenpick if they at least had something in the order of 1.5mm but >2mm is just too thick for my taste.

    • @simongunkel7457
      @simongunkel7457 9 лет назад

      Behemothokun I've used a lot of different picks and the 0.88mm Dunlop Tortex is something that I tend to end up with as a default. I do switch it up for some songs and I have even recorded with a .2€ coin. and a 4mm felt pick. To some degree that's just a matter of getting used to a particular pick and it just feels right, because that's what you use the most. Then again, I know a lot of guitarists who end up with the 0.88mms and that seems like a place that is comfortable to many. My second most played picks are the 0.73mms.

    Ordered one of the try out packs the day this video came out and finally got them in today. Been ordering Dunlop Tortex .60mm picks in bulk for years so I was skeptical at not only the size of the picks but the price. I cut my teeth playing guitar on crust punk and d-beat, and have since moved into doom metal, so I never developed much skill in technical right hand patterns, but I find with these picks i'm able to pull it off with ease. Never thought of a pick as something that could improve my playing. Guess i'll keep the Dunlops around the home studio for the guitarists I work with that inevitably never bring a pick.

    Cool picks, I really like the bevelled edge. It allows me to hold the pick at whatever angle is comfortable and still hit the strings clean, without any pick scrape.
    Unfortunately, i find thick picks 2mm + bounce around a lot more than thinner ones, and chicken picks are too smooth to stay stable in my grip.
    I should probably man up and grip harder, i know.

    I have tried just about every kind of pick on the planet. And I have modded so many that there are no two alike. That being said, I have found the ultimate pick (for me) It is a little device called a Pykmax. Basically, it is a small curved piece of hard black plastic that attaches to one of three different thickness of picks. It fits comfortably in your hand and keeps the pick at the perfect angle. It takes a bit of getting used to, but in the end it has make my playing so much better, so much more consistent, and now I am hooked. I try to use a regular pick and I am struggling. I suppose it ruined my being able to pick up any pick and play, but it is well worth it. Check them out. Well worth the $10 bucks or so.

    Hi Glenn, what are your thoughts on picks for sound during recording? I've been told that really old, rounded picks give a bad sound and new picks give a brighter tone (or something). It would be something I'd like to see tested, along with thinner and ticker picks and the tone differences you could get just by changing a pick. Thanks

    • @ChuranuQC

      Robbie Williams The clear sound is due to the sharpness of the pick I think so a new pick should sound brighter.

    I got into making picks trying to find a material that held up under seriously brutal riffing and also something to color the tone in an agreeable way. I went through all kinds of stuff looking for what I was after and stumbled upon something that was so close to what I was after I decided to go with it.. It's the tinted lens material for these hip looking safety glasses. They have a rating number stamped on them which gives their chemical make-up. So I saw this lens laying on my workbench and I went over with a torch and warmed it up to soften it up. Then I placed a heavy flat piece of steel on it to flatten it out and let it cool. Shaped it to my liking and it's so fucking tough I still have and use that very pick and I made that one 6 years ago! Ive made quite a few more since of course and these fuckers are indestructible just about. I feel creating my own picks also made my relationship to playing a lot more intimate with the instrument and aware of certain flaws in my technique that needed some woodshedding.. I want to try these Chicken Picks too.

I myself buy $.25 picks at a local shop and they suck but I also lose them a lot. Buy yourself a nice pick and take care of it and don't lose it and the whole $8 it cost for one of these should go pretty far as he said after six month it's still perfect.

    I said "no way" to these and wrote them off when the video came out. Finally said "fuck it" and ordered a Badazz 2.0mm pick and LOVE it.

    I'll probably say some weird stuff about picks, but..
    Have you eve compared a thin pick with a thick pick SOUNDWISE? If you will, you'll find out that there's a HUGE difference in sound, much more than new/old strings, more like LP/Strat. It really affects the sound. And the rest depends on the technique. I play 0.5-0.6 pick having it turned like 45 degrees to the string and it gives a really nice and juicy tone, it probably affects a speed picking a little, but i get used to it.
    After all, you do a lot of things in the persue of good sound and everybody is missing such giant piece of guitar gear like good sounding picks. And after playing and comparing that picks, the thick and harder ones sounds dim and sloppy. Try it for youself. Get a good grip/pick lock with your hand so it would be fixed tight and play angled.

      @HeartcoreMitRA 9 лет назад

      ***** that's strange. It may depend on how sharp the pick is, but even for used and rounded picks i find much "clearer" tone, thinner pick gives much more highs in tone and the sound the pick itself produces as it goes off the string also gives more juicy tone. Or maybe i'm too slow, but 0.6 pick is seem to be enough for some technical difficulties.

      ***** It might be also the way you hold it. i hold it like my index finger is fully folded and the tip is touching my palm. The pick rests at the fold of my first and second phalanx and pushed tight by thumb. So the whole construction is really tight and not causing any wobble. Then it gets really easy to play soft picks, also it gets easier to play from cold, for example. You just lock all the fingers and use the whole hand, which is easier.

      flips220 It's very paradoxical that people are willing to shell out serious cash on tools yet barely anything on shit to use them with.
      Thirty bucks will go very far in this case, unless you're so clumsy with something as crucial to a guitar player as their goddamn pick that you lose several every week.

      @MrBrian-fq4lr 9 лет назад +7

      TheDoomerBlox That's a nonsense argument. Shell out serious cash on the tools but barely anything on the shit to use them with? That's because you can get regular picks for a fraction of the cost of this shit, and they do literally the exact same thing. Only an idiot would pay that much for a single pick.

      Picks that are this thick have a beveled edge to them, so they feel like regular picks but with a smoother attack.
