      I am 71 years old I wake up every morning at 5 and work out for an hour every single day, I don’t suffer from low libido I do suffer from low libido in my wife, how bout some meds for women that’s where the problem lays.

    Sleep is huge and underrated. I'm 29, when I was in the Army, my sleep was extremely poor for obvious reasons. Now that I've been out for a year, I've found my muscle building plateaus conquered more easily, my mood is better, etc. Sleep is important, folks.

    I'm a 60 you male and my T levels were down around 350mg. I went on Keto, lost 15lbs, and added DHEA and boosted my T level to over 450. Really helped to reduce overall grumpiness according to my wife!

      Because it is bullshit. Workout with weights, reduce carbs and cut out sugar. Eat moderate to high protein and high fats. IF and Keto will increase your Test.

      That's not true. I can personally attest that everything the doctor is saying is true. Bok Choy, kale, collard greens, cauliflower are great and readily available. For me most effective energy booster has been broccoli.

    I remember my doctor recommend to get the best sleep is consistency. Same bed time and waking time pretty much sets your body clock in action. I believe Rena is right about all the points she made in this video with clear and concise evidence to back the claims. At the ripe age of 70, the best claim was about exercise. I average 6 miles walking everyday I work. I believe I don’t suffer from deficient testosterone levels. Thanks for the informative videos from your newest subscriber

    I made three changes from last year’s physical and my Testosterone moved up 200 points. I went on the carnivore diet which is high fat high protein diet and I lost 21 pounds. Started going to the gym doing resistance training about three days a week no change in sleeping habits normally about six hours per night. I’m 64 years old male but I feel like I lost 21 years not pounds. Thank you Dr Malik for all you do.

      Sir, I'd suggest taking 8 hour sleep, I used to sleep 6 hours but then I switched to 8 and can not imagine going back. Taking a sleep where you wake up naturally without any alarms is just amazing, trust me. Thanks

    Rena. Your one of the only doctors, I have listened to, who support a hypothesis, using statistics. Statistics was one of my favorite college classes, so when I hear u talking about changes being “statistically different”, I know your conclusions are fact based.

    After a heart attack I started to get a little more involved in my well being and one of the things I was told or learnt to do was reduce stress. I learnt transcendental meditation (TM) which was amazing but I'm really bad at routines so never got into the swing of regular practice. I knew I needed to build muscle to help in weight loss and as an older guy we have to look at those hacks that will help us increase testosterone. I now put a heaped teaspoon of ash. powder on my breakfast each morning because it helps to reduce cortisol levels. With lower cortisol levels you get higher testosterone and vice versa. A side benefit of taking the ash. powder IS lower stress levels - it is like meditation in powdered form!

    My story is I was starting my 60s and felt older and slowing down plus didn't feel like have sex but wanted to. I had my yearly physical and my testosterone level was just below 300 which is just below the minim level for a male my age. I asked to try some testosterone therapy and was given a prescription for gel. It took a while to kick in but in 3-4 months I felt a little younger and was able come out of retirement and go back to work, come home and exercise or do an hour of yardwork and my sex drive felt normal. I also could think more clear headed. It didn't make me feel 20 again but maybe 50 give or take. I now tell guys my age about the benefits of testosterone. It's like the fountain of youth for males my age.
    Oh I'm 68 but people keep telling me when they ask how old I am that I seem much younger.

      300 is considered normal by the medical society...but low to the bodybuilding society....you can build muscle and have a normal sex drive even in the 200 range ....Often body fat and medications can loser testosterone in older people ...that number may be higher and fluctuate during the day....People should try everything before using TRT ....unless nothing else works....last resort should be Cialis....which may clear up a lot of problems.

    yes ketogenic is awesome. I was diagnosed as mixed dislipedemia and have been in keto for 4 years now. In the first year I reduced my triglycerides from over 600 to below 80, visceral fat from 14 to 3. Waist size from 36 to 31 slim.
    By the way, I achieved this without changing exercise - actually did it a lot less.
    Ketogenic lifestyle is so delicious, easy, and honestly, addicting. Just so unfair that lifestyle so healthy is so cheiap, easy, and fun to live with.
    Now, I am starting to exercise big time to run 1 mile in under 5,5 minutes. Oh, I am 56 by the way.

    I’ve been taking the Irwin testosterone mega boost red with nitric oxide booster, and I’ve noticed a significant difference in my testosterone levels. I haven’t had it measured but I am much more aggressive and I have a lot more energy in the gym.

    1. For the pounds to melt off, incline treadmill walk first thing in the morning on an empty stomach 5 days a week for 30 minutes. Doing it in a fasted state forces your body to use stored energy, which is important for weight loss. You can do weight training in the evenings a couple times a week to rebuild muscle lost through weight loss - the net result being fat loss. 2. Exercise will then help u sleep better. Not sleeping enough is a stress to the body. The body doesnt lose weight when its stressed. 3. Eat more fibrous(as opposed to starchy) veggies and lean proteins and less carbs. Exercise, sleep and diet are 3 equal pieces of the fat loss pie. Without 1 piece of the pie, the process doesnt work.

      Incline treadmill walk works better for fat loss than running. Also it is not as hard on the body and joints and so it doesn't increase cortisol or appetite.

    I would be very much interested in the keto to testosterone video. Personally i did the keto diet for a full year. Im 6'4" and was 290lbs. I was very fit and active before i gained the weight. My avg weight back then was around 210. Weight crept up on me after marriage and the kiddo. Decided on keto to do something about it. I lost 45lbs in 2 months. Then it leveled off. The other effects were why i stayed on it. Digestive system functioned better, more energy..needed less food. I generally ate one meal a day. I lost the taste for alot of things. Especially sugary drinks. Any bottle of fruit juice feels like im trying to drink a bottle of maple syrup now. It was quite the interesting experience

I'm not sure why I'm even taking the time to comment on it, other than that it was refreshing to hear someone confidently say they don't have all the answers.     Over 60 male here... Started a Keto diet 6 years ago after the Doc diagnosed Type 2 diabetes with a 9.4 A1C. Yikes. Started my Keto Journey and noticed no appreciable weight loss per se... but, at about the 4.5 year mark, my A1C had dropped to about 6.3. I couldn't figure out what was keeping it up and so I then made a transition from Coke Zero to Zevia Cola and my A1C has dropped to 5.6. I sleep like a rock about 6.5 -7 hours a night, but I don't get to exercise that regularly (thanks C0vid) anymore. However, my T levels are pretty low. So, I've been taking a lot of supplements to help boost my immune system (helped beat C0vid without taking anything extra), but I didn't know about Ashwagandha. So, thanks for your immensely well done videos - they've been watched with much enthusiasm...! Off to the store for Ashwagandha...!

      u dont really lose fat from keto or any other diet, u lose weight from being in a caloric deficit, for most ppl its easier to eat less calories especially without counting them on certain diets

      Ashwagandha hasn't done anything for me the 3 months I've been taking it. (Using the liquid 'Herb Pharm' brand). But hopefully you get better results.

      Check with your doctor to see if you can try intermittent fasting. I'm 40 and 2 months in lost about 20 lbs and feel better. Starting weight 205 height 6 foot

    Interesting. I am in my late seventies and have been eating keto for a couple of yrs. Don’t know about testosterone but it has definitely helped bring down my blood sugar levels. And reduced my craving for sweets. It’s a diet that I can live with long term. Not just a fad.

    Overall great video I just recently found you. I'm 52 years old, I've been ketogenic for 7 years, I get up at 5am and do a mixed training routine of weight lifting and calisthenics, fasted, 5 days a week, sleep 7-8 hours/night, drink ~100oz of water/day, stay away from alcohol during the week. Just had my testosterone levels checked at my last physical and I'm tracking at the levels normally seen in 30-35 year olds. Maintaining ~15% body fat and added 3.5 lbs of lean mass over the last year, which is supposed to be impossible for men over 50.....never been healthier in my entire life per my blood tests and extra inflammation markers I pay extra to have tested. The only other thing I would mention is proper supplementation. I'm not talking about TRT or god forbid steroids that will shutdown natural testosterone production forever.... don't do it. I mean a healthy amino acid mix, vitamins and electrolytes daily. Also DHEA, which is a natural testosterone precursor that the body produces up until ~18 years old then shutsdown in both men and women. Taking it as you get older gives your body the tools it needs to make it, naturally, with the proper stimulation like weightlifting. Research it first if you are considering it, some hereditary cancers can increase if you take it.... so get educated first and know your family medical history. Mike Munzel over at High Intensity Health does a good discussion on it.

      @@Kronx1970 Hi, happy to list what I do, I've curated my supplementation over a number of years. In regards to aiding in weight lifting I take a BCAA complex before and after lifting which contains L-Leucine, L-Isoleucine, L-valine, Taurine. I also take a nighttime recovery drink which contains L-Theanine, L-Glutamine, L-Leucine. Both are sold by Jeff Cavalier over at AthleanX the BCAA is called "Alpha RX" and the nighttime drink is called "Reconstruction". In regards to Keto, you have to remember its not a diet, its a permanent lifestyle and you are rewiring your body chemistry when you switch to being fat adapted so the body needs different things versus a carb based diet. I take a ketogenic multivitamin called Ketocore (on Amazon) which also has a probiotic complex for high fat diets to aid in gut health. I also supplement Vitamin B5 morning and night. B5 aids the body in converting fat to energy so its mandatory for Keto, if you are feeling fatigued in the afternoon you are probably not getting enough B5 on keto. I take Berberine at night, this aids in reducing blood sugar levels (glucose regulation) and lowering insulin as well as reducing overall inflammation in the body and oxidative stress. Vitamin D 5000IU's/day, the body uses vitamin D in ~100 processes and most people don't get enough. A good quality Omega 3 containing DHA and EPA daily. Lastly in the ketosis process in the liver the body sheds electrolytes (sodium, magnesium, potassium primarily) as part of that chemical reaction so I take an additional 2grams of salt in the morning in pill form and get ~5-7grams of total salt a day which will sound crazy to most people but its totally normally for a fully fat adapted ketogenic lifestyle. If you are getting tired in the afternoon and are on Keto you are also probably not getting enough salt in your diet along with the B5 listed above. Magnesium and Potassium round out the electrolytes. If you are getting muscle cramps during the day you don't have enough potassium, if you are getting muscle cramps at night you are not getting enough magnesium. As you can tell I'm somewhat of a biohacker. What does all that get me at 52 years old?.... Testosterone levels like a 35 year old, insulin level at 3 which is super low, glucose in the 60's, triglycerides in the 80's, c-reactive protein of 0.3 - anything lower than 1 is optimal, and a very healthy cholesterol of 382 and LDL of 289, which is perfect for keto. Also my ApoB/ApoA1 ratio is 0.5 (perfect), which is a far better estimator for cardiovascular risk than the garbage cholesterol test which is just a number based on a math calculation and is basically meaningless unless you look at all the other markers I listed above. Hope this helps.

    Simple then, just lose weight to increase testosterone - either by regular exercise, good diet or sleeping well or any combination - but individually apparently increase testosterone as well - and feeling fitter also increases self confidence and so libido.

    Hi Dr. Rena
    I am 53 yr old lost about 50 lbs because of cut down on high carbs diet. When I was 18 and signed up for army training in was 172 lbs. Now at old age I am a healthy 160 lbs. Oh yeah got my T level tested, my doctor said I have high T at 953 .
    I take a pomegranate pill every night and I try to eat avocados every day. I enjoyed eating food with a lot of green.

    A remark from me as a chemist: Most food contact plastics (mainly PE, PP, PET) do not contain a single trace of bisphenol A (BPA), it's only in polycarbonate, PC, because it's a building block of that material.
    BUT: BPA is a part of many metal coatings for metal food containers, from cans to silos.
    Concerning BPA plastics are only a sideshow.

    Dr Malik I can test the fact that me personally working 25 years working nights and only averaging 4 to 5 hours sleep has caused a decrease in testosterone levels. Nocturnal circadian rhythm I really truly do believe is very important. I personally can see the difference. That's 25 years of testing on my own.

    As a person who has cared about my health (and read a lot) over many years, a study done in Denmark shoed that people that use low fat dairy in fact gained more weight over a time period that those who used full fat dairy products. So full fat may not only increase testosterone, but it may also help with weight loss. The brain runs on fat I think, so it doesn't hurt cognition either.

      correlation is not causation. Calories are king and potentially the full fat milk increased satiety meaning less overall calories consumed but the study sounds flawed either way

    Helps you sleep better.
    Improves digestion.
    Improves metabolism.
    Makes you happier.
    DON'T DO TOO MUCH THOUGH AS IT WILL BURN YOU OUT.

      And dont forget resting is a huge part of exercising since most of the metabolic benefits come actually while deep sleeping after exercise, if you exercise but your sleep quality is bad you wont get as good results as you could

    Ashwaganda has been good to me. 350mg per day. Helped me loose about 20 lbs. Down from 180 to under 160. Diet and activity levels play a roll but it isn’t like I run 5 miles a day. Currently age 45. Supposedly it suppresses cortisol production and cortisol suppresses testosterone… that’s what “they say” at least.

    I cut sugar out of my diet, tea, coffee, tinned food, sweetie cakes and biscuits. I didn't increase my exercise routine, or change other aspects of my diet, which was already full of fresh vegetables, fruit and cereals. I lost 7kg in several months. Now if I have anything sweet, I feel nauseous afterwards. I will indulge in a little dark chocolate with a coffee, but that's meant to be healthy. Now fruit and vegetables that previously tasted bland have so much flavour. I am in my 60's and people think I am in my 40's. I firmly believe that sugar is slowly poisoning our society.

      If you’re interested in trying natural supplements try fadogia and tongkat ali. I had my blood work done before I started taking both these and my T-levels were 523 ng/dL and after I started taking a supplement my testosterone levels were 950 ng/dL.

    As a person with over 25+ years of training at the gym, natural and very strong. I agree with a majority of what you are saying. Don't eat to much fat, but don't restrict it unless you are fat. Most test boosters, sups, pills, and so on will not do crap for you. Only way is if a person takes steroids. Then it must be for the rest of your life as it reduces your natural test and that has side effects. Such as heart issues. Make sure you get enough sleep. We all know that we don't perform as well when tired and it can destroy our day. Try to eat healthy and exercise. Do research into these to topics yourself and find foods you enjoy and exercises you enjoy also. Then do them.

    I am 53 years old and have a healthy libido. I get 5 hours of sleep on weekdays. Usually go to bed the same time and wake up the same time. My job requires physical activity on my part, but I think that helps my libido. I get deep sleep for the entire time I'm sleeping. And yes my phone does not rule my life. Some days I don't feel as pumped but hey, I'm 53, I'll take it. I am a believer most health issues can be solved by physical activity, eating a balanced diet, sleep, and drinking clean fluids. But our society these days can work against against what makes us healthy.

    I am a 75 year old male. Doing doing daily squats of 50 to a 100 makes a big difference in my sex life. One can do 2x50 day or less if one is a beginner, and increase slowly as one is able. No squats no, no performance.

    TLDR on how to reduce your testosterone level
    1. eat junk food you’ve microwaved in plastic container
    2. don’t exercise
    3. gain weight by doing pts 1 and 2
    4. Work hard, wake-up early, sleep less

    Studies say that in order to maintain hormonal wellness (specifically saying testosterone) we need some threshold amount of fat, that’s why it is the reason for better result in muscle gain when body fat is 15-20% when compared to that of single digit fat %age.
    What is your opinion doc ?

      But I think it's more about the caloric intake - the fat is just a visible effect.

    She's right. When I work some days are way harder than others, those days I'm way more pumped up and the ending is way more powerful. So it definitely does something when you work harder in a day.
    So work hard in the day time , so night time you can perform much better.

    I know the importance of deep sleep, but I've always wanted to experiment with Da Vinci's sleeping schedule. He only slept 20 minutes every four hours and is considered to be a very productive man. Is it possible, that our bodies can adapt over time, if we can adhere to this with absolute rigidity?

      A friend of mine tried the Da Vinci pattern as well as several others. He reported that all of them made him miserable and had no benefits. Da Vinci was clearly a black swan individual, and I doubt most of us can benefit from any of his life choices.

    I'm 5' 6" and weighed almost 250 pounds. I had an A1C above 8.0 and a testosterone level at 35 whatever the unit measurment was...... 3 months later (and MILITANT KETO)..I am at 205 pounds with an A1C of 5.3 and a testosterone level of 210 of the same units (the range has a spread between 250-800) so I'm still under the minimum necessary but a lot better than I was. I'll get back to you when I lose another 15 pounds....

    What helped my sleep is to get down pillows and better sheets. I also added mattress toppers. I added two, a down and a foam. What a difference. Tempur pedic is a waste of money. Losing weight I found is to fast. You don't need to do complete fasts but get rid of what you normally eat and instead eat fish, brown rice and vegetables in the middle of the day like 11am to 3pm. Snack a lot instead of eating a meal. Double your steps and use a health watch to remind you. 20k steps will help you lose weight along with partial fasting. I lost 14 pounds in a month doing this. Yes, take Ashwaghanda.

    You are rocking forward and back throughout this video. This causes the exposure of the video camera to flicker as the camera attempts to compensate for the varying light levels. It is quite distracting. You could lock your exposure and/or move your lights back further from your face. I hope this helps.

    I am 80 years old. I was married to a nurse for 45 years and she got me to use at least a teaspoon of
    Poedered garlic every day. On salads etc etc. My cholesterol levels are always good I became diabetic at the age of 75 and I know garlic helps keep my sugar normal I increase my garlic intake, and now I don't take any meds for my diabetes. Just thought I would throw this in here in case anyone wants to try it. It works for me.

    I went on a ketogenic diet and lost nearly 100 lbs and tripling my T. This was a high fat, low carb diet. Fat, cholesterol, etc. are crucial for sex hormone production and the absorption of fat soluble vitamins like D. Of course vitamin D is the building block of testosterone.

      For some people a high fat diet is not really an option. They can still lower their carbohydrate intake, keep their fat intake down and get weight loss and fat loss.

    The only problem is that Testosterone is directly linked to cholesterol, one effects the other and in cases where one has high cholesterol and I statin medication is percribed to reduce cholesterol, it effects testosterone. So balance of diet and exercise is very important.

      Cholesterol levels are markers for cardio vascular disease potential. However it might depend on your diet, LDL cholesterol is recycled by the liver, but sugar and oxidation, both linked to what you eat, will modify LDL, prevent LDL from being recycled by the liver and modified LDL will end up blocking arteries. I would recommend watching doctor Paul Mason 's RUclips video on metabolic syndrome.

    Good information, thank you. A tip for your video production. In this video, you were continually rocking back a forth from the camera. This caused your camera to continually adjust its exposure. Either sit still or set your exposure and take your camera off of auto exposure. Or do both. This will limit the distracting exposure changes throughout the video. Thanks again!

      I agree with all that but I’d recommend organic meat and avoid meat with hormones. Also sunlight does wonders even in the shade. Ultraviolet rays can boost T dramatically.

    I did a test on myself based on weekly volume facial hair shavings for various "T booster" herbs. Supposing there is a proportional effect there but it was an easy metric. Ashwagandha was the only thing out of several that caused any notable increase.

    Small bit of technical advice: either get much better (i.e. brighter) lighting, stop rocking back and forth, or turn off the auto exposure on your camera (i.e. set it manually before recording). It keeps switching as you move in and out and it’s VERY distracting.

    I tested my testosterone last year and my free testosterone was 47 with a range 46-224 being normal. I'm 49 years old and weigh 180lbs at 6 foot tall. I sleep 8-8.5 hrs a night and run 5 days a week 25-30 miles a week. I stopped lifting weights last year because I could not make any progress. What do you think about TRT?

      Honestly .. my own opinion is, I would never take TRT and I'm 55 years old. I wouldn't even take an Tylenol pill unless I needed to and forget about the statin drugs for cholesterol stay natural and you remain healthy. Never take a synthesized medication they all have side affects after long term usage. Basically all medication is poison. The body tolerates the substances, because the changes are engineered to be subtle. However, what is happening to the body is a function of lowering or elevating something with drugs. If you exercise and eat right you are ahead of the health game. Check into your natural habits first before considering TRT. There is to much focus in the world on a quick fix by popping a pill. Increase your testosterone by winning in life, competition raises your "t". Fixing and building things raises your "t". Being out in nature raises your "t". Accomplishing goals raise your "t". Speaking with attractive women raise you "t". Living life to the fullest raises your "t".
