Abarth 500e Review: Is it a proper hot hatch?

  • The Abarth 500e is billed as the first proper electric hot hatch, but is that a formula that even works? In this CarGurus UK review, Vicky Parrott puts the latest Abarth model to the test, to see if EV power can equal a fun driving experience.
Powered by a 42kWh lithium-ion battery, the 500e gets a 164-mile range on the WLTP test cycle, while its 152bhp electric motor allows for a 0-62mph sprint of 7 seconds. In terms of acceleration, that might sound more warm than hot, but as Vicky discovers, the little Abarth is still an entertaining car to drive thanks to its sharp steering and grippy front end.
The synthesised ‘Abarth Sound Generator’ meanwhile adds a rumble in place of the petrol model's exhaust in an attempt to capture some of the soul of a classic hot hatch.

Vicky is one of the best at these first drive videos. This will be such a compelling used car. Please someone, buy this now at £42k, so I can have fun in 3 years time for half that or less.

Great presenter - she is doing a very well job. Unfortunately, the music is too loud, sound levels are not on the same level, she had one slip of the tongue with "Performance SUV" which should have been cut out..

Stand out favourite EV - absolutely nailed the brief on this car. So frustrating it's hobbled with such a short range - it wouldn't work for me and I suspect would put off a lot of potential buyers. Over 150 miles is where I would consider buying one - such a shame as I love it so much.

Probably the best review I've seen of this car. As the owner of an Abarth Punto Esseesse I can't see this really replacing the ICe version. Part of the fun of an Abarth is controlling the car with the gearshift and of course the noise of the engine. I notice that the artificial noise generated on the EV version does not replicate any gear change. If you drive it like an Abarth I doubt if you would get 100 miles range on a good day.
    Basically a rich persons toy.

Just goes to show how hugely heavy “small” electric cars are. This little city car is weighing in at 1.5 tonnes and by comparison, my 2010 Jag X-Type estate diesel weighs in at almost 1.6 tonnes. For a family estate! Crazy!

Very cool car that is! If only it was a but less expensive. I can understand the battery, but the price... Monthly lease in the Netherlands: Fiat 500e: 320 euro, Abarth 500e: 520. Eh, what now? Oh, a nice Kona Electric is 420 euros a month...

What's the point of an EV if it's trying too hard to "sound" like an ICE car? 🤔 Have they accepted that EVs are soulless machines?

No one would buy a Internal Combustion car with a 100 mile range, Perplexing they think its acceptable in a 40k roller skate.

What a totally rubbish car. The design is from 1957 and it should have been thrown on the scrap heap by the end of the following decade. Like the mini it's become bloated and still impractical. It's just nonsense! But I suppose some idiots will buy it because 🤷‍♂🤷‍♂
