How does supercar performance in a practical hatchback shape for less than the cost of a basic VW ID3 sound? Good? Because that’s what this MG4 delivers. It’s called the MG4 XPower - and it’s the most powerful MG… ever made.
The MG4 XPower has 429bhp from a pair of electric motors, 201bhp in the front and 228bhp in the back. So it’s also got all-wheel drive. That means it’s got the grip to get from rest to 62mph in less than four seconds - 3.8 if we’re being picky - and on to a limited top speed of 124mph. And that’s basically as fast as a Porsche 911 Carrera S.
This is what we’d call a bit of a sleeper - a car that doesn’t look fast, but actually is.
In fact, unless you knew that the orange calipers for the big brakes behind those special 18-inch wheels were unique to the XPower, you might think it was the Trophy version. No massive bodykit, no huge wide arches.
It is a bit lower and a tiny bit wider, but not so’s you’d notice. But it’s got a similar face, the same double rear spoiler, the same general look. You’d never really know that it has TWICE the power of the normal one.
But what’s it like to drive? Join Nicola as she takes MG’s supercar-beating hatch on the road for the first time. Is this the perfect electric performance car? Will you be ordering? As always, we love to hear what you think, so please leave your comments below.

VW is already struggling in the Chinese car market, which it has dominated for some three decades. After selling just 13,665 units in the first half of 2023, the ID3 has just received a price cut and now starts at CNY 125,900 (approx. GBP 13,500 or USD 17,600). By comparison, more than 21,000 BMW i3s have found their buyers in the same period (That's right, I am not even comparing ID3 to their Chinese counterparts).

or you'll start seeing more accidents caused by the mg4's lane assist, it's possibly fatal, that's how bad it is on my mg4 nordic, and as a bonus even if you turn it off before driving it sometimes turns itself on again mid drive with no warning

Most of VW's problems at the moment are as a result of buyers choosing other, more competitively priced alternatives......Choice in the new EV market is growing quite steadily now......and not all buyers are bothered about paying a premium for a badge. Practicality and value for money are way up on many buyer's lists.....

I own an MG4 SE standard range and it is no slouch, trust me. I had my test drive in the X-Power on Monday 7th August at WH Brand MG. Arrived at 9am and Callum showed me to the car. As it's basically the same inside, it was easy to familiarise myself so off we went. I just drive it normally as I left the dealership so it was not really any different to mine at that point. I did give half a cup of beans as I left the village and it was at that point I realised I was in something very special. Callum had mentioned that it had a built in race timer in the infotainment screen but I didn't bother for the first run. As it was now about 9.15am on a weekday, there was very little on the road so we stopped on a nice long straight A road and engaged warp drive "I mean launch control". I asked the wife if she was ready and lifted off of the brake. Holy hell..... All I can say is that we bailed on the first run as it felt way too brutal. My vision seemed to blur and my sizable stomach nearly fell out of my arse. So round one to the MG. We then just drove it normal and gave it the beans now and again and it is truly lethal. Second launch control session my wife filmed which was fun. Then we found the race timer and went again. All I can say is that once again MG have been very conservative with the 0-60mph figure. I timed a run of 3.4 seconds to 60mph which was insane. As much as I hate to say it, it was too fast and the launch control is a party trick that you'd probably show off for the first month. Overtaking acceleration is mental and would never get boring. If I was going to change my Standard range, it would probably be for the new extended range model which has a more powerful motor and a 0-60 time of around 6.1 seconds. That seems more useful that this lunatic.

Also, did they ad the "oh shi*t" Grab Handles for the passengers to hang onto - also missing on the earlier models. Other than that it's a good bang for your buck option if you are into 0-60 bragging rights. This would have been so much better as an Estate car though & then I might have been interested.

I saw my first MG 4 last month, in the same blue colour, and it is even more attractive in real life than appears in images. The base model SE at £26,995 would match many ICE warm hatches and I would choose than over a car with power that you would rarely use, even if it is a bargain.

If MG don't clean up with this car, I will be staggered.
The standard MG4 seems to have struck a chord with buyers, as I see plenty of them on the roads, but the fact that they have introduced this X Power version with supercar matching acceleration for only a little bit more money on a car that is already well priced means that the waiting list for this thing should be longer than the Great Wall of China.
