    Such a cool video! Zoo vets are definitely underpaid. I didn’t even think of military vets, but that is interesting and I will definitely look into it. I originally planned on going into mixed practice but focusing on small ruminants because of the lack of vets that are experts on them especially around where I live. Currently volunteering at a shelter, with the vets I have already learned so much there about dog and cat care.

    • @lindseynichol94

      I agree! Zoo employees are underpaid in general, the funds just aren’t there I guess. But that’s awesome that you would think about that- there is SO many opportunities with this career so it’s good you are keeping an open mind and seeing where your journey takes you! ☺️

    Don't forget emergency veterinarians who can make between 100-200k too! Small animal veterinary specialists e.g surgery, neurology, opthalmology can earn 2-400k a year depending on the location. I would say professors/ the specialists who stays in academia tends to earn less than ER or even some GP small animal vets.

    With the current vet shortage and crazy increase in business we have seen in the past 2 years, working for a great base pay with profit sharing has made my income as an ER vet higher than I ever imagined when I graduated in 1990. But with that comes a proportional increase in stress, mental and physical fatigue. I am chosing to cut back hours so I can hang on and put off retirement for a few years.
    Good luck with your future career. I can't imagine doing anything else, but I did underestimate the toll it can take. Develop a good support system and the ability to step away from the role for balance in your life!

    I find this video both educational and interesting. Especially with the differences between the professor and the researcher. I'm in the VetMed program, and some of my teachers are doing both, but only because the teaching career didn't pay as much. Maybe it depends on the area and the school that they work for. I'm interested in wildlife, and I knew that they did not get paid a lot, but it shocked me to know that there was more that I needed to do to be certified in that field for less than what a small animal veterinarian got. But there was 1 thing that you said that stood out the most: "if you have a passion for working with exotic animals, then this is the career for you."

I wanted to be a zoo veterinarian since high school but my dad wouldn't financially support it. I love animals. They have the most beautiful energy. My dream is to hold a baby orangutan one day. I think they are so cute. Well, when (having faith) I become financially stable, I will take up zoo veterinarian just because of my love for zoo animals. I wouldn't have to worry about the salary. You could always see if you could work in that particular department if you’re really interested! Or maybe try indicating that on a shadowing job at a specialty hospital? You will more likely be able to just shadow vs. actually working but it’s worth a shot!

    I’m prevet but have recently been seeing so many negative things abt vetmed and have basically been scared off :( I don’t enjoy clinical practice at all but do like the idea of public health or research - do u think it’s still worth it?

    • @lindseynichol94
      @lindseynichol94  3 года назад

      Of course if you have a passion for it- it is definitely worth it! The field needs more veterinarians interested in that type of work so I definitely encourage you to keep going if you can see yourself being a veterinarian. There's negative sides to every job/career. Due to the pandemic, the hospitals have been crazy busy but since you're not interested in clinical practice, it might not affect you as much.

  • @kadencronick6796
    @kadencronick6796 3 года назад

    I’ve been watching a lot of videos from different people regarding animal careers and their pay and in those videos the supposed salaries vary greatly. For example, one video I watched said that small animal veterinarians are severely under paid whereas other videos like this one shows that they make good money, why is this?

    • @lindseynichol94
      @lindseynichol94  3 года назад +1

      Yes- compared to other doctors, veterinarians make a FRACTION of what human doctors make so in comparison it is not a lot for the same amount of school and same expense in student loans. Also, the veterinary field has been recently more in demand due to the pandemic and increase in 50% pet ownership, so practice owners have been compensating veterinarian's ALOT more than they have in the past. A few years ago, a starting 6-figure salary was practically a myth for a new grad (more like 90K) and now I have seen with my own eyes new grads starting at 6 figure salaries. So it's possible!

    • @lindseynichol94

      Hello! Yes, you can certainly specialize in feline medicine AFTER vet school. So after undergrad, then 4 years of vet school to complete your DVM degree, then extra training to become officially feline-certified.
