  • The cost of veterinary care has become so expensive. I call this economic euthanasia....namely, people having to put their animals to sleep because they can't afford the proper care and treatment. This has become a greater problem than overpopulation. It's a topic on which Dr. Jeff is very passionate, and he explains the situation in more detail in this video.‪@DrJeffPPI‬

I wonder when this economic euthanasia starts to move to people. It could happen. Looking around, our lives are getting smaller and smaller while for certain groups, it's getting richer and richer. it's just greed. We see the same thing locally even with family owned practices. One of the kids goes to vet school, they get puffed up with classes on how to make a vet practice more profitable, they come out and take over their parents' practice and it turns into a money grab without investors taking over. My mother took her dogs to a local vet who was reliable, and was by no means hurting. One of his kids took the practice over and the costs doubled or tripled with constant recommendations for other services or products.

Thank you for sharing this. Another good option is to contact a holistic veterinarian. Even if there is not one in the area that you live, one can do an online search and call them. Some of these vets will do PHONE CONSULTS. You can call their office and set up an appointment over the phone. The ideal is to bring the pet in, but if that's not possible... the phone consult works. I've done this multiple times over the years and had good results at VERY reasonable costs. Holistic veterinarians are REAL vets but will include other remedies many times such as homeopathy, herbs, etc... instead of, or in addition to, antibiotics or steroids, etc.. Best to you and your companion animals.

They are becoming increasingly hard to find. Mars is the largest player, but increasingly, smaller investors are getting into the game. From their perspective, one where profit is the only thing that matters, the loss in volume of clients is more than made up for in higher bills for the remaining clients. For them, it's win-win. Less clients, less employees required, and less space required. That it will result in the increase of suffering and death for more animals is not a consideration.

Wish I had seen this when it came out. Here's my 2 cents.
My decades old family vet sold out to one of those corporate groups. Prices immediately went up, most of the long term staff quit and went elsewhere except one vet. Your credit card is scanned before anything is done with the animal instead of settling up with the receptionist afterward. I was waiting in a treatment room reading a list of 'Employee Rules'. Believe it or not, one of the posted rules is that 'Employees are not allowed to say negative things about corporate'. To be honest, if you have to post that as a rule, SOMETHING IS WRONG.
The final straw came when I recently had one of our dogs put to sleep. After the procedure and we're all crying, saying our last goodbye, the tech comes in and places a sheet of paper on the table next to our dead dog and says, "Here's your invoice". . . WHAT!? Absolutely no couth or empathy.
Time to find a new vet.

For example, my 12 yr old, but otherwise healthy, dog had lameness in a front leg. I agreed to X-rays. After taking 6 pictures, they determined he had arthritis in his elbow. Of course he was anethetized for the radiographs which were sent to a radiologist to be read! A vet goes to vet school for 4 years and read an X-ray themself? When the bill totaled over $1,000, I complained and they reduced it to $800 by removing some supplements and doing less extensive blood work. All this for simple arthritis.

My last dog died over a year ago (age 17) and I have made the decision to not adopt another animal because of the astronomical (for me) cost of veterinary care these past 6+ years. I haven't understood WHY costs have been going up and up. I was paying $68 office visit, just to walk in the door. I started going to a mobile vet for lower cost vaccinations and then to an older, more affordable veterinarian practice far from where i live just to be able to afford the care of my aging dog. And it was the only one i could find. My fear in adopting another pet is that i could face a potential veterinarian bill that I could never afford and HAVE TO choose "economic euthanasia." Vets are in it for the $$, not for the love of animals. It just plain greed. In 2016 I took my male cat in because he couldn't urinate. The animal hospital hooked him up to a cafeter for a week, and said he was still blocked so they tried another week 24 hr care, then they told me he needed surgery to shorten his urinary tube. By the time they were done it cost me $5,440.00. Another time I took my Ferret in because he was ill they looked at him, gave me some liquid food and a syringe to feed him and sent him home with me. It cost me $330.00. The next day he died in my lap as I held him. I thought I'd save money when my other cat got sick so I took him to the SPCA clinic. He died 2 weeks later. ASPCA clinics are good for vaccinations, spay, and neuter services and that's it. VCA of America clinics are good but it will cost you a fortune. I no longer have respect for vets that just plain rip you off, they're in it to get wealthy like regular doctors.

I'm priced out of owning a pet after 17 yrs of owning cats.
My indoor cat also got fleas 2x in 2 yrs even with Bracecto. That turned me off of pet ownership too. I needed my sanity, it is horrifically difficult to get rid of fleas in your house.

Dr. Jeff, you are 100% correct. We had a great vet who retired and he sold his practice. Prices tripled. Our family has discussed that if either of our dogs gets seriously sick we will have to euthanize them because it costs too much money to have the vet fix them. It’s very sad, but our new reality. And we don’t get their teeth cleaned anymore because it is $1,000 per dog for that. The prices are outrageous.

    You are so right!
Retired with a small dog and 2 cats that adopted us. All three had issues in the past 2 weeks. Over $600 of unexpected expenses. Quadrupled since we first got the animals.
Saved a stray 2 years ago, liver issues and got him neutered so that we could rehome him. Almost $2,000.
My vet has an "Angel Fund" that people donate to to help some who can't afford care, but still...quadrupled prices just in the last few years.
Beginning to fear for my ability to continue good comprehensive care, let alone unexpected issues.
Just sad that it always comes down to corporate greed!

Here in southern New Hampshire, KL Ranch Mobile Veterinary KLinic subscribes to and supports your ideals of lower cost veterinary care for everyone. We have provided our like minded care services for 30+ years. Sadly, the areas populace sees our practices not as lower cost care but as “less care.” Pet owners gravitate toward the bright and shiny hospitals with over-reaching technologies, redundant diagnostics, and over-priced treatments and surgeries. Yes. It is a “failure of our society” to throw away common sense for the bells and whistles that pad bills and drive up costs (& expectations).

On the last vet visit she had a couple of months before, I was afraid she was going to break a leg getting in and out of my little car. (I'm 80, disabled and was unable to help her.) 110 pound Great Pyr/Yellow Lab rescue had been with me 11 years after being in five foster homes. Two weeks without pain meds and she was unable to stand/walk, resulting in euthanization by a wonderful, compassionate vet I had never met who came 50 miles to my home to help. In three days she will have been gone 9 months. I still miss my sweet girl so much. Didn't realize how safe I felt when she was here...until she wasn't.

why didn't you look up some alternative pain/arthritis remedies? If the dog was healthy except for the arthritis, you could and should have had the initiative to do something different. There are other ways besides prescription medication of dealing with arthritis. Most pet parents don't seem to want to do anything beyond what was told to them by the vet. And in my experience, a lot of times it's done for profit and not for the well being of the animal. Question what they tell you. And you shouldn't be going back to that same vet clinic for doing that to your dog.

Thanks for speaking up. Something has to change.. many people cannot afford the care of their pets and they suffer…it’s very frustrating and sad. I was quoted $7500 for surgery on my dog for exploratory surgery.. I was told to bring full amount when I drop him off.. and should it require more money I would have to pay upon pickup. Thus, my baby has not had the procedure. I worry everyday. Worse thing is that they would not discount to help me out or accept a payment plan… how many people have that much money available??
This was very informative. Thanks Dr Jeff. Please do another video on this topic as updates are available..I’m willing to do my part…going to a Vet for a preventative checkup cost $96 just for a quick look over… then anything extra done is charged separately…All I hear is how Vets love animals and want to help them. Well that may be true for some but it is not for all…they are money motivated and if you cannot afford to pay then tough…To get my little guy surgery I was told to apply for Care Credit. You have to pay full balance in 6 months.. no interest. If you do not interest will then be charged at a rate that more than doubles your monthly payment! Sounds illegal…And you cannot extent the 6 months to 24 as they offer….they play on your emotions because of the live you have for your pets…Just to bring them in for a nail trim.. $25 plus $96 for the visit per visit per pet….also, if your pet must be put down….that’s even unaffordable…issues have come up about meds they use to put an animal down. Very shady.
    I’m for serious Changes…
I was so distraught I contemplated coming to see you. Actually it’s still on the table. With the plane fare and hotel fares, it’s still more affordable than what they charge here for the surgery..

We have to drive 100 miles to the 2 clinics who are working with us. Non of the vets around here is helping. What a shame.
It's not only the vets, people need to change their attitude about animals. Here is so much neglect and cruelty. People move away and leave the pets behind, let them breed and dump the kittens or pregnant cats. And all the backyard breeders....It's just awful and very frustrating. It's a lack of education.

It can take months to get your pets spayed and neutered and the corporate prices are getting towards $1000 to get it done. Teeth cleaning $4,000+. I was quoted a minimum of $6,000+ for my cat's dental work. Couldn't afford that so now his teeth fell out and he's having gastric issues. There's a list of all emergency vets and wait times for WA you can access online. There have been times when the nearest vet ER to us on the west side has been Spokane! That is utterly ridiculous! So many animals suffering because of corporate greed.

Dr. Jeff, you're speaking the Truth. Too many animals suffer and are put to death because of Money. I was a Vet Tech. for 45 years and you're right about many ways to fix health issues for animals. New Veterinarians would be well served to be fostered and trained under you. People don't understand that new Veterinarians still need to be exposed to the how of practice and medicine. All the new medical equipment is nice but the old practical way of treating problems works and people can afford it.if offered.
Pet animals are very important for people, and they shouldn't have to kill their companion because they don't have $10,000.00 when, in reality, $2000.00 to $3,000.00 or less could have saved their pet. I was in practice from 1971 to 2016. I've seen a lot, and I know there are many ways to approach a medical and surgical issue for our pets.
It's unfortunate that Veterinariary Schools teach only the top tier of treatment and don't offer anything else, when we all know there are many ways to approach any medical problem and most of them solve the medical or surgical issues.
To me it's just sad because I know there are many options and they are not being offered.
I'm glad you're vocal about this problem.
I can tell if bothers you like it bothers me. Too many animals die because of this issue, and it's not right.

Thank you for your honesty. Being in a orphaned and abandoned neonate rescue for the past 11 years. this is critical we don't and can't use corporate get clinics. We are 100% volunteer and 100% donation run. I see the young adults that have basically grown up in the rescues understanding this. They are working for non profit clinics while going to vet school . I personally think if students were required to work in rescues and non profit clinics before graduating from vet school. There would be a lot more fight for lower cost options. We are a very rescue small. With a bout 75 volunteers. During the height of the pandemic we were able to save almost 600 kittens and puppies. Last year was less but still hundreds of lives were saved and homed. Also because of the years of experience with neonate kittens and puppies from birth to five weeks on intake. We have a much higher infant survival rate then most rescues. There was a time not long ago when vets would ask us for advice. Vet students don't spend a lot of time on neonates. Now we and others rescues are doing a lot of partnerships with the universities vet dept in our area. This partnership helps us afford treatment and surgeries that in the past would have been impossible. We work closely with TNR groups, good Samaritans and high kill shelters. So as you can tell affordable vet care is very close to my heart.

I live in Canada and the same thing is happening here. My small community Vet practice that I had been taking my dogs to for 30 years morphed into a “corporate” Vet clinic. The old Vet back in the day was a reasonable, no nonsense kind of guy (like you) often prescribing at home remedies. My elderly dog has had some health issues in the last 2 years and have spent at least $5-6K and they wanted more for numerous tests. As a senior with health issues of my own this has been a huge expense for me. At one point I paid over $1,200.00 to have a simple UTI treated because the Vet ordered more tests than necessary but missed doing a urinalysis resulting in a 10 day delay in treatment. Too busy focussing on the “up-sell.” I asked them if pet ownership is only for the wealthy. I love having a companion dog but once my little guy passes I can’t afford another pet.

I figured this out last spring when things so drastically changed at my formerly locally owned and trusted large and small animal veterinary practice. The difference is attitudes and treatment happened overnight and was a nightmare -- even to the point of withholding my 17 year old lab's lifelong incontinence medication refill because her annual exam (that they've never required previously) was due LATER THAT MONTH. This was the final straw after a series of bizarre interactions. I was prompted to do some research to see if I could find any clues and sure enough, the practice was recently bought out by a globalist corporation. I will not be extorted by these evil people. @@ShikokuFoodForest Just the price increases in vet care an the crazy treatments being recommended. I worked for a vet about 30 years ago.
I have family that have had vets in the past 15 years recommend surgery and amputations and chemo therapy on old animals that are near the end of their lives. That kind of extreme care is not appropriate for old animals.
It is much kinder to provide palliative care when you have an old animal that has been diagnosed with cancer or some other serious fatal condition. Veterinarians need to be honest with the expected disease progression and not recommend these treatments when they will not extend the life of the animal and cause them pain and discomfort.

@@GO-xs8pj Hello. Thank you for sharing. I’m not completely familiar with all the changes in how the practice of veterinary medicine has changed over the years, but I have even noticed significant changes here in the countryside of Japan (I’m Canadian) where I live. 7years ago, I was fortunate to find a small, personal 1-vet clinic where the personal service and care was top notch. The vet was especially kind and prices were very reasonable. Unfortunately, he retired about 5 years ago. A very young vet took over the practice and the care wasn’t the same.
I just visited a new vet clinic yesterday to ask if they provide dental scaling for cats. They do, but I was shocked at the price. They need to administer general anesthesia first which I understand. I was quoted $500, which I guess is not outrageous, but the price was much higher than expected just to scrape calculus build up from the molar teeth. For now, I’m wondering if the benefits of getting my cat’s teeth cleaned outweigh the stress of general anesthesia and going to the hospital for the day.
What I really noticed with this animal hospital was that it is a huge business with 8 veterinarians and all the latest medical equipment. To me, it just seemed like the entire focus is on charging outrageously high prices for any procedure. Of course no one can get insurance here.
I completely agree with you. It makes you wonder the motivation of some of these veterinarians today if they are recommending all kinds of surgeries and treatments on an elderly pet. FYI, I wanted to be a veterinarian when I was much younger. I have mixed feelings about the practice now.

There IS a problem with the profit motive in ALL medicine. It shuts out huge percentages of people and animals from ANY care whatsoever, and negligent, painful, suffering and more frequent deaths ensue.

I was at an emergency vet once where my dog had surgery. I came every day to visit my dog. One day while I was visiting on a Sunday, 2 church ladies came in with a cat. They said they were driving home from services when they saw the cat get hit by a car. The driver of that car never stopped to help. But the church ladies pulled over and put the cat in their car and brought it to the emergency vet. They told the church ladies to pay or take the cat elsewhere. Of course, no other vet services are open on Sundays except emergency vets. The vets did not even offer to put the cat to sleep (about $250) in order to stop its suffering. The church ladies were not prepared to pay at that time. So they left in tears, still carrying the poor cat wrapped in a sweater. I didn’t know what had happened until after they left and the receptionist told me what happened. I didn’t have much money after paying for my dog”s surgery, but perhaps several of us in the waiting room could have put $50 toward having the cat euthanized. I just think that sometimes, when suffering is involved, the rules need to bend or be reevaluated.

I got so much respect for you. I am living in Canada and the prices are absolutely ridiculous. Many years ago some veterinarians went for monthly payments but not anymore. People leaving animals in the parks because they can’t afford to take them to vet

Now they want you to do something like financing so you get to pay third party dictated interest rates and best have a cosigner if making under $35K a year or have had any payments default in the past. It's basically like Money Mart payday loans except with pets and vet hospitals. Mars Pet Inc has bought up many clinics the past few yrs too so less vet clinic options to pick from too. I've had so many issues with vets making ridiculous mistakes or having such a big ego they can't even offer a simple apology and resolution when they mess up too, like I get there's high demand but if they can't even take proper care of patients then why are we paying such inflated prices for this? The oversight colleges are a joke too, good luck ever getting anywhere. Idk, it breaks my heart.

Thank you Dr.Jeff. I was so blessed to have an amazing Vet for 20 years and we talked lots about this. Sadly, he just passed away at only 60 and I am crushed. Such a wise, kind and smart man. This is evil what is going on now with the industry and people will not afford to have pets anymore. Here in FL so many rotten people dump their dogs andnit's so sad😢😢. Thank you for what you do fir us and our pets.

Why does it have to invade our fur/scale babies????? I am amazed at you and your wife’s dedication and stamina in doing what you can do. I'm in the same boat @ 67yo.
Instead, I donate to my local ASPCA as they practice TNR and they are overfilled with newborn cats & dogs. I wish I could give more.
Like you, I had a sweet cat but had to put Tigger to sleep a few years back. I only took him as the person who couldn't take care of him asked me if I would. I couldn't say, "No."
I never knew so much love. Nothing would make me happier than to be able to afford healthcare for my pet(s) but like human healthcare, it's too expensive. Now, both humans and animals suffer.
Private Equity firms & their greed are ruining our lives; both human and animals.

I know! Remember when you used to take your pet to the vet and they knew right away what was wrong with them - never any expensive tests and it seems back then the treatments worked better too. Now it's all about money but as more people cannot take their pet to the vet these corporates will lose on their investment by pricing their way out of business!

100% agree. I’m my community daily, there are people trying to dump there animals at the shelter, so much so that the shelters here in Los Angeles have turned people away and are killing for room. They are euthanizing 1 year old dogs and puppies just for room. Last week in 1 shelter they euthanized 20 healthy dogs. All this because people can no longer afford to take care of them and it breaks my heart. I just try to offer support and guide my neighbors services: to low cost vets, pet food drives, eviction protection, emotional support protections against evictions. All these services are awesome, but very inconvenient. What working class person, working 2 jobs has time to stand in line for $20 bag of dog food. We need convenient, fast, inexpensive services and support as well as legal assistance for people at risk of eviction due to their pets. As a community the only way we can save the animals in our community is by supporting each other.
