  • Attica! Attica! One year after buying a brand-new home, Donna discovers she has no insulation in her attic, resulting in ice dams on her roof and water damage inside. Mike Holmes investigates the situation with the help of renovation expert Jon Eakes, and discovers some surprising new-home building practices.
Crappy Capping Paul and Donna hired a roofer friend to install 13 new windows. After a quick job, they are left with sloppy capping and drafts in the house. General contractor Mike Holmes pulls off the capping, insulates the windows, and supervises a proper capping installation.

I have watched Mike Holmes and his children practically from the start. Watched them grow into their jobs. Get married and children of their own. Hope they continue in his footsteps. As well as Damien and the crew. I miss watching them on TV and also now glad to see them on You Tube. Keep up the good work!

This was almost me. We had actual window installers show up to put in new windows because the old ones POURED water when it rained. When they were putting in the windows however they didn't bother to look between the trim and the framing to notice that it was just a wide open gap between a quarter and a half inch! And of course when it rained the new windows POURED water. So we took off the interior trim and realized that we could see the window frames from inside. We spent a solid 2 days filling in the open gaps on 8 windows to fill in the gaps with Window/Door spray expansion foam. Something they could've done in hours when the windows were out, we solved 6 months later. Honestly it makes me never want to pay someone to do something when I can do it better myself.

FYI that foam absorbs water, the windows aren't flashed correctly. The foam will hide it but in the end will absorb water and hold water against the houses framing.

I am so happy that Mike decided to release his shows again on RUclips. He should get the monetization for his product that the rip off artists have been garnering!

Mike, I know you're in Canada but I really need help. I live in Ohio. Bought a house 2 years ago. It's an older house but since I moved in I've had multiple issues. Small septic tank that over fills with drainage water, flooded yard that smells like sewage, bedroom floor collapsed because the floor joists had rusted nails and no joist hangers. Floors are all wavy, toilet stack is cracked, no insulation in walls or ceiling, no ground wire on electrical plugs, old windows that leak water when it rains, shallow crawl space, no furnace only wall mount propane heaters. In the garage all the sill plates and studs are rotted out, garage is leaning, concrete is cracked and crumbly, old style ceramic fuses in garage, no ground plugs, ceiling is sagging, garage door has 2" cracks on both sides, too low to get my van into.
I know I should have gotten an inspection but that was a condition of the cash only sale. I did take my dad and an Amish contractor to look at the place but they both agreed that it was a good investment. I bought what I could afford and now I'm living in a house that's crumbling. There has to be something you can do to help me. I'm not married, 54 yrs old and disabled. no kids except my 2 GSDs. They love the fenced in half acre but the yard is so muddy right now that when they come inside they are caked with mud. The mud creates dust and I breathe it in. Since it smells like sewage I don't know what I'm breathing in. I have to wear a CPAP at night and I have to change the filter once every 2-3 days. Please Mike, I need help and don't know where to turn. Some have suggested tearing the house down and starting over but I don't have any money to do that.

You have to pack the windows all the way around when you install them with insulation and a potty

Home Inspector's are good to have inspect your investment on All home's, new, old, recently renovared, even your own home while your getting renovation's done to your home. Just make sure to get your own inspector. Not one the Realtor or contractor recomend's. For the simple reason that the Realtor or Contractor might be paying the Realtor or Contractor might be paring the Inspector for a passing inspection report.

Most of it is covered by the TV show (HGTV.ca) - for some shows the homeowners are asked for 10-20% - for other shows (very few) Mike has paid out of pocket.

Listen to yourself Mike! "Don't get into their hair but don't get out of their hair" Mike, once you get into their hair you have just screwed yourself. They are vicious and nasty vindictive people, once they see you watching them the shit comes out! You of all people should know that .

Original air date: April 14, 2003. Didn't exactly have 4K technology 20 years ago.

Remember that this show first aired in 2003, it's hard to find good copies of it, and reuploading it over and over again loses quality over time.
