This video was hilarious... but y'all are sleeping on how freaking good this youth orchestra is. Seriously. A youth orchestra that doesn't sound like a train is already an achievement.
I have friends inside and I have heard two of them play in real life, they are really very good, like diploma level at age of 12 those kind
A TRAIN- 😂😂😂😂
There are some out there, though! I’m proud to say that I am in a similar youth orchestra with the same age range that sounds like this (and I say this because we played the same exact piece and I know how to compare lol). We have fewer members, but a good conductor and instructor makes a huge difference too.
I think philharmonic youth is supposed to be one of the best youth orchestra in the county
can relate, i used to play in a youth orchestra wen i was 10/13 and i thought we sound decent, now that i've been watching some of our concerts recordings i can't understand how we were so bad

If they were my conductors, they'd roast me.
For real.
Eddy in this vid is like that Asian kid who always says that they didn’t study but end up with straight A’s lol
I think Eddy is the type of person who can see the details and learn fast, Brett's first try helps him to analyze things. I wish I could be like him lol
Exactly! HA
Eddy is that kid in every video haha
you couldn't be more precise!
But I think it was also to his advantage that Brett went first so he could learn from Brett's mistakes and also from the conductor's feedback
I love everytime Brett asked everyone “are you guys ready?” but actually he was talking to himself
That's so cute!
its like asking himself if he's ready, but outloud instead of his head
The conductor of this orchestra is FANTASTIC. I say this as a conductor myself: he communicates well with the kids in the orchestra, his gesture is effective, and his pedagogy of conducting to Brett and Eddy was amazing - just what they needed at the time, and not overwhelming. What an amazing educator on multiple levels!! Kudos to Brett and Eddy for being vulnerable and trying out something new in the music world. I love this channel so much!!!
I have a question for you : do you find it more difficult to conduct with a mask on ?
For example, does it impair your peripheral vision, or do you have to use your hands and/or your whole body more than before to convey what you want, since the musicians can't see your facial expressions ?
But not meeeeee
Agreed!
Whats a pedagogy

But how a conductor practice?I'm so curious.

Meanwhile, the orchestra is thinking, "Well, Twoset has told us to ignore the conductor and just follow the concert master."
Musicians respect conductors that can play an instrument really well too.

What I like about Brett and Eddy is that they go out of their way to experience different aspects of music careers: music store workers, conductors, trying out different instruments, etc. When they go and learn, they humble themselves and have fun instead of being like, "I know more about music, so you guys need to follow me!"

Although they r violinists and part of the string family, I feel like they should experience some more of the other families. It is so interesting how the orchestra starts to feel unconfident when the conductor is unconfident. ;) Very interesting that you can hear it in the music. And this is what conducting is about. Giving the orchestra confidence, bringing the feeling to them of the piece ... so interesting.
Literally you get everything from the conductor. I had a band director who brought it all to our band practices for marching band, and by doing so you feel compelled to also give it your all. I remember the first time this particular conductor conducted our piece and afterwards everyone was exhausted and I swear the room had the after echo of how loud it was. It was so good!😊 on the other hand I've been in a room with a conductor who was pretty weak, for lack of a better way to say it, and people got lost, came in on the wrong parts, no dynamics. To an audience member it may seem like the person is just waving their hands but their job is so important! I admire conductors that can get their all from their musicians.
Yeah It's true! Most people don't actually recognise the differences that different conductors do to a band or orchestra. I had a band director one time and he was a really old conductor, but really funny and joking, so we played really well with all the lighthearted pieces. My other conductor was also a fun guy (again really old), but was a brass player (a euphonium and a trombone so he was a bit of a bully but a fun bully that everyone liked) so we played passionate pieces really well. We usually play the same pieces sort of as a throwback and even with the same piece we could see a huge difference!
So true!!
If I'm not wrong (please correct me if otherwise), the conductor is the glue of the orchestra. Keeps things together. And if that glue is weak, the orchestra is also weak? Is it like this usually?
Right, my band director from day 1 told us she didn’t want to be there. So the band sounded terrible. We’ve actually regressed as she’s continued her rant on her dislike of directing.
"If they don't catch you, its their problem"
When it comes to conductors, truer words have never been spoken.

@@Noone-ue6xo no. Conducting is about rhythm and dynamics, and directing a group of people to play that rhythm and those dynamics on your cue. More or less anyway...
@@hbarattai see and thanks for responding! :D
No one as the other comment said, pitch isn’t that important when live conducting if the members already know their notes and you aren’t the everyday teacher helping them with ensemble intonation. To be ‘natural’ it’s more important to have great familiarity with the piece and know where you want to take it. The gestures will follow.
I appreciate that the real conductor is both really amused and patient/serious. Like, he's having fun, making it fun and also makes sure that they actually learn how to do it.

I've never played in an orchestra either it's mostly solos and private concerts since I take lessons with a private teacher and I know that pianos aren't really always included in orchestras unless they're the leading instrument so that really bums me out... And watching people like Brett and Eddy who put so much emotion and effort into their instruments makes me feel so happy to see fellow musicians that are so in touch and connected with their community and instrument
He has memorized the score and can see it clearly in his mind's eye, every instrument's part flowing in near perfect synchronization with the tempo that comes out of him. Thus, he has the mental bandwidth and processing power to use gestures and command his physical body to display what he suggests the orchestra do during the performance. This memorization of the entire musical score liberates him to become a teacher and instructor and conductor. He's a fine conductor.

As conductors, we always have to anticipate, be at least a beat or more ahead of the orchestra. Otherwise you are not giving information that the musicians can use, you are sort of vibing with them
You make a good point but 'a beat or more' isn't always necessary. It can also come down to the individual conductor; I've played with some who are many beats ahead and some who are hardly ahead at all, and it usually doesn't determine the quality of their conducting
@@Max-jf5vu of course, the quality is determined by soo many factors. Specially cause a lot if not most of a conductor’s work happens in rehearsal and if everything is well set up, then a professional orchestra may not need that much information on the go at the concert ;)
It also may depend on how fast each person can process the conducting, if they need a heads up a measure before, or 3 measures before, depends on each section. Conducting seems complicated.
@@applepeachbirdduckmaster801 As a conductor I can confirm, yes it is complicated 🥴. But I recently made a video about conducting where I make the point that I don’t think being a conductor is harder than say being a surgeon; it’s all relative :)
It is a completely different mindset. I played in a small orchestra and we were rehearsing an arrangement I had written myself, the conductor had to leave for a while and asked me to conduct. So, I knew the score perfectly well, it was entertainment music (much easier) and I still screwed up completely. Just the thing with keeping the pulse with one hand and signalling (cue, hush, louder..) with the other was enough to overwhelm me.

Seeing Brett and Eddy playing together with other musicians like this really shows how multi faceted they are. It's not many times we've been able to see the play together with an orchestra like this. It shows so clearly that they're highly trained musicians. Now I'm even more inspired to apply for music schools. Thank you 2set!

This is not related to the vid but I just want to thank Eddy & Brett for giving me a free online music course lol. Earlier we had an exam & a part of that exam contains classical music questions that are 91.96353% not known by non-musical students (especially that I study science) and I'm so sure I aced it through my twoset knowledge. Don't mind me, I'm just flexing the fact that I'm part of TwoSet Academy.
This is cool. Can you tell us any of the questions that were on it, that you were able to answer because of the TwoSet Academy? Just super-curious what kind of questions "they" asked.
Yeah, I would also want to know. Reply if you could haha
love being a ling ling wannabe :)
i am not a musician. i’ve watched twoset for almost two years now and i’ve learned so much. watching this has shown me that conductors are BADASS and are a force to be reckoned with. i learned that being a conductor isn’t just waving your baton around,, there are dynamics to remember.
that’s why i love your channel, you’ve taught me and other non musicians so much and have shown true love for the classical genre. classical music is something i listen to all time because of you both. thank you brett and eddy,, for being amazing. 💌 🎻
Hey! I am an orchestra conductor and totally agree with you: they have done so much for classical music and inspired many people ( myself included) to talk here on YT about our love for classical and what we do. :)
keyaunna, you are so inspiring! Keep on listening to classical music, learning about classical music and watching Two/Set and your life will change for the better! All the best to you.

Eddy I guess could be a conductor cause he hasn't got "inside tense" like Brett, but he lacks strength and stability and maybe that's the only reason why he's not a lingling yet:D. Brett is more kinda hardworking and solid, careful, that's why sometimes he sounds more sophisticated than Eddy. But they both are genuinely passioned about music and it really feels, and that's the most crucial
Thank you for your excellent observations.
Excellent indeed :D

@@arianah8842 because they haven't experienced conducting themselves 🙄
Just put them in the spotlight and see how it goes🤭
really shines a light on how difficult being a conductor really is. you decide what the orchestra sounds and feels like, and you have to communicate it in a way that anybody can understand.
and bravo to that youth orchestra. bra-fricking-vo. i could not take my focus off of this video just because their playing was so good. very talented and hard working youths that deserve great praise
Have I ever played a violin before? Nope. Do I ever plan on trying to learn to play violin? Nope. Have I binged every episode on this channel? Yep 😁
Gang gang! I was interested in learning double bass contra bass (low airy notes don't hurt as much➡️) but haha not gonna happen! I've had chronic migraines since birth so tbh.. I rarely even listen to classical music Considering sharp sounds feel liek hot knitting needles inside my head but you bet I've probably seen almost all their videos in the last.. SOME amount .. years.
Why not plan on learning it? It's a good plan
@@xingyuan_ it looks really hard i cant never play violin :( i want to play but i cant probably

Maybe Twoset were told to be con-DOCTORS instead so they didn’t get musician as first choice in the career test

-conducting

Ok but Vivaldi L’Estro Armonico op. 3 concerto no. 10 is EXTREMELY underrated! Loved their performance at the end!👏👏👏👏👏
Vivaldi's creations apart from the seasons are very underrated overall. :(
It made my day!
When they started playing the final movement, I really felt like I was a parent watching their children play. Proud and Happy. It was so good.
In Norway we actually have a show like this. Its a bunch of celeberties that get taught to conduct by kids that play classical music. Its really fun bcz u can tell that some of them never listened to classical music or remember what tempo their piece was. Someone was gonna play flight of the bumblebee and they did it so slowly that one of the judges called it the ‘morning walk of the bumblebee’
Sounds like a fun show. Wish they had it with subs on RUclips. There was a similar show on the BBC.
What's the show called? (and do you remember which episode that was? 😬) thank youuu
well go on then, link us the video lol

@@Noone-ue6xo you can actually notice when eddy conducts and the conductor asks him “is this what you want?” and eddy says “its not what i had in mind” you can actually hear the difference with Eddy it was much slower and the cellos and double basses entered very slowly it sounded reluctant and it was slightly dragging it was really because of his gestures while the Conductor was more snappy and everyone entered at the right time (this is no shade on Eddy he did amazing)
Sometimes we make fun of their "exaggerated" gestures but wow, really conductors are amazing
The exaggeration is very necessary too, because small gestures wouldn't be visible to the musicians in the back.
what's interesting too is that I've never had the gestures explained to me but I naturally understand what the conductor is trying to convey.... but it seems like expressing through gestures needs to be taught to a conductor despite being a musician who already understands the importance of it.
The 19:45 moment when Eddy played the solo bring chills to my bone. The way he swerves his body shows his passion for the movement
I felt the pressure when I conducted because Club president was late for rehearsal.
And we were playing wood wind instruments ~ Palchabel Canon D. I know it's lame but when 99% of us are sports athletes, we gotta do with what we have.
