Maybe but basses can’t as basses (even in this video I think) have to sit on a ledge, and also they would hit the stand because we have to sit closer to our music to all fit
When we did parades we would march and dance along to the music and sometimes we would do movements like that and although we could still play it didn't sound quite nice.
@@andoeniespinoza5736 I can imagine, cause you got aerodynamic interference on a wind instrument, lololol. I can see how challenging it is to sound good and do this crazy stuff while moving and turning as you play. You can get away with a lot of this stuff in singing so long as the movements allow the torso and windpipe to stay aligned, but then there's the issue of the vocal projection meandering, lol. Michael Jackson was a jazz dancer and developed very unique dance movements so he could dance while keeping his torso stable so that he can still sing properly. You can do all kinds of things with your hands and shoulders and legs, contrary to what many people think of when they visualize singing (I saw someone comment that a concert performance was fake because the guy was walking while singing, LOL).
Yeah in field shows we’ll twist around and do fun visuals but with a key caveat: The instrument has to move the exact same way our head does (clarinets/oboes have some wiggle room). As a flutist the flute thing was p bad and would be impossible to play much at all. The most intricate visuals are during rests bc you can do whatever

As a wind player, you have to be very careful elevating your instrument because as you play, saliva builds up in the instrument, and if you tilt your instrument to high, guess what's headed straight to your throat!
@@janne7263 At least some of it is saliva. Fluid droplets come out of your mouth when you blow air, not just when you intentionally spit. That's why coughing spreads airborne diseases more easily compared to exhaling from your nose with your mouth closed
14:28 as a trumpet player, I can tell you this is very possible. Horn flashes are pretty common in marching bands, and just to have some fun during a song. Marching band also tends to require a higher horn angle because your audience is above you. (It's super fun when the spit starts rolling back through the mouthpiece) tl;dr: It's just trumpets being trumpets :)
Yeah all the things they’re saying “I don’t know if that’s possible for the winds” are just common marching band moves. I know fuck all about orchestra but I’d love to see what they think of my first love: an entire football field of band kids. 😂
@@dhu2056 There's no actual rule for that, except that the strings always go outside. In fact, 2nd violins normally sit next to the 1st (inside), and outside go either the cellos or the violas. So this is pretty standard. Then, again, if the conductor says the trombones should sit at the front and the cellos next to the timpani, then that's the way they do it (not that I've seen it happen). But yes, violas outside is pretty standard in some orchestras.
As@@federicoandre5717said, there's no fixed rule (except that first violins go on the conductor's left). Second violins on the outside (at the conductor's right) was very common up until around the middle of the 20th century, and it is today more common in Europe than in the USA. (The cellos then usually go next to the first violins and the violas next to the seconds.) A lot of standard orchestral repertoire from the 18th, 19th and (early) 20th centuries has passages that exploit the "antiphonal" arrangement of the two violin sections for special effects; these are lost in when the second violins sections are next to the first.

I’m pretty sure most of the orchestra members were from a real orchestra and the obvious bad ones are some of the main characters in the story, thus not a real munition... they are actors. But I remember seeing interviews about how they hired musicians to teach them the correct bowing and fingerings, correct positions for piano also. The original manga artist is known for the accurate details of the some what niche themes she chooses, and she only agreed for this to be in live action if they could do it accurately. A lot of people my generation loves classical music and/or started playing instruments because if this drama! Also my school orchestra played Beethoven’s 7th symphony because we were so influenced by this... lol
Violinists talking about how humble they are? They're the most humble. In fact, they'll let you know that there is no one more humble in the whole orchestra. 😄
Yeah, that last Chinese movie was so horrible! I know nothing about classical music but those scenes hurt my eyes, can't believe the director sees that and "yeah it's good"
One weird thing I noticed as a percussionist: disregarding the timpani dude’s playing (is bad), he should only have 2 timpani. It’s true that we usually have 4 to 5 timpani onstage at most concerts, but this is a Beethoven only concert, and during Beethoven‘s day, there were only the two middle timpani, the 26” and the 29”. Since they only needed the middle two, why bother bringing the other two with? Timpani are heavy and cumbersome, and you never bring more than you need. Why waste energy on them just to bring them back without playing them once? Big goof
Just a little basic info on Nodame Cantabile (Live Action): The girl listening extremely intently was Nodame, the protagonist and a gifted but lazy pianist. The conductor was Chiaki, the male lead and also an accomplished pianist. He was one of those extremely serious/intense people, and just started learning to conduct. But the first assignment he got was to work with the university's worst orchestra, the S Orchestra (a lot of the members couldn't even play in tune when they first started). All of these people were university students, not professionals (yet). The concertmaster was one of those typical rebels who didn't want to be restrained by the usual conventions of classical musicians (hence the attire). The group of misfits made a pact with Chiaki to add something 'extra', which is why there was all that spinning and 'interesting' poses at this first performance (also the first time he had fun conducting). The man wearing that long wig and shouting "Bravo!" in the audience was a world-class conductor (with a weird personality and many issues). Chiaki became his apprentice, and this performance was sort of a test to see if he would qualify. So while the critique on the technical aspects (violin-playing, conducting) were on point, the other things pointed out were completely reasonable within the context of the series. It was one of those occasions where manga/anime-style exaggerations were incorporated, but remained perfectly plausible. You can't imagine everyone acting like this. But you can easily see _these_ people behaving that way.
@Lailene Rodriguez-Ordas No prob. Nodame was one of my favourite live-action depictions of music. Thanks for pointing out the corresponding anime episode.
I’m mostly just shocked that I figured all of this out based on anime tropes- like seriously guessing 80% of the plot. 😂 I think the overall context of live-actions is very important. But it’s hard to get as big of a laugh, or a reasonable length of a video when you share all of that context. I can understand the balancing act of a RUclipsr giving a reaction.
@@OneWhoDreamsAwake Yeah, 2Set did a good job. There was nothing wrong with this video. As professional musicians, they balanced objective criticism with recognition of the effort put in by the actors. I just wanted to leave the context here for those who might be interested, or who saw the anime and never watched the original (it came out before the anime, and is, in my opinion, much better in terms of character development). People tend to assume that adopting anime-style things into live-action would be cringey, but this one was honestly well done. Not only was the music great, but it also showcased the real struggles musicians go through, all in a humorous way. It may not be as new and shiny as productions filmed in recent years, but it's a classic. Of all the music-themed films, TV series, and anime I've seen, this was hands down my favourite.
Isnt it kind of wired that the blonde guy didnt like being "restrained"? Like... why did he pick up violin and classical music let alone playing in an orchestra. He couldve chosen guitar and play in a rock band or smth. It is tacky and annoying to see these little "rebelious" unique attitudes and even tricks (the twists and turns of the instruments) being incorporated into something that is supposed to be already pretty meaningful and beautiful on its own with no need for these kind of acts. I havent read or watched anything about nodame cantabile si there might me more to it.
@@randomme3095 What's wrong with wanting to become a classical musician but not liking stuffy clothes? Orchestral musician attire isn't just formal, it's stifling. Wearing tails, cummerbunds/waistcoats, and bowties while trying to play difficult pieces is _not_ conducive to playing well. Also, notice that this wasn't exactly a formal occasion either. They were performing in front of the school, no one else. And why can't rebels become classical musicians (not that there's anything wrong with rock)? Many of the best classical composers in history were rebels who went against the convention of the time, experimented with new sounds/technique, and created revolutionary pieces. Most of them weren't even remotely decorous, and did all sorts of outrageous things with their pieces, during performances, and in their daily lives. The concertmaster here was a classically-trained violinist who practised for years, aiming to become a classical violinist. He had to fine-tune his playing before this, but the potential was always there. The S Orchestra was filled with university students, some aiming to become professionals, some just wanting to learn music. They didn't distort the music, just designed a funny gesture that was unique to them. What's wrong with adding a bit of unnecessary but individualistic quirk? And yes, I'm a classical musician. I wholeheartedly approve of what they did in the context of the series. Finally, I completely agree with the last sentence of your comment.
Lol my marching band during our fight song and hype song (But also just regular visuals during marching shows, like fr I wish twoset would review some of the top DCI shows from the 2000’s-2010’s because they would be absolutely in awe)
Yeah but they do not rise it up so high, I think, it is much more gentle and more left right motion than sharply high left right motion...I think it would be very difficult. I tried it once only a little swing and it so so much harder, this sharp big rapidly motions would be very difficult, almost impossible... For example: ruclips.net/video/DPOeGWl6x4E/видео.html yes they are moving with intstrument, but 1) they are not moving just the instrument from left right, they are moving with 2) the instruments are not risen up to the sky, they are just moving from left to right or vice versa... and that is the major difference, why is so unreal, even if ska brass players do it, because they do it naturally...
@Garrett yes, they each played in several different orchestras and they both were also the concertmaster in those orchestras for several years. it's all on their website. very impressive.
As a flute player, the sacrilegious posture at the end kinda bothers me. You might be able to pull it off, but you would need to move your head very precisely to keep the flute in tune. If it rolls in or out the flute will go out of tune. And a gold flute produces a more mellow and rich tone if anyone is wondering.
As another flute player i can confirm that, plus your air flow would probably be messed up enough for your pitch to sound like it is on a rollercoaster.
Listen, I'm no professional when it comes to playing clarinet, but this 17:13 - 17:14 *this* is how you get neck injuries (not to mention the whole clarinet section's going to sound like a flock of ducks being strangled)

My question was in what world is their only one percussionist. I can only imagine in a normal setting how many parts he would have to cover. The pain. The pain
For a little bit of context, that orchestra was done during the school/university days. It was not a normal orchestra and all the members are consist of bad/showing students that a well-known teacher pickup just to mess around. Due to jealousy, that teacher fell out and that student conductor takes over. You could say it was their first time performing in front as an orchestra and as a student do weird stuff just to gain attention. The actors in that orchestra are the conductor(the main protagonist), concertmaster, timpanist, flute, oboe, and bass( I forgot the name of instrument )...
As a trumpet player, I can 100% verify that we do exactly what Brett points out at 14:28, just not in performance. The movement is easy to get used to with practice, especially with marching experience
As a member of the superior silver-plated trumpet master race, it is actually fairly common to play like that in marching or outdoor bands. It's really not common in sitting bands because you have to more of your body to get the same effect. If you are the OU Marching 110, though, you don't care about any of that and yeet yourself across the field at mach 10.

I like the part when Eddy and Brett talk about conducting, then give out an example of how conductor should give instructions to the orchestra, then Eddy ends up saying "Conducting is an art form" as conclusion. And Brett's showing the phrasing and difference on the violin between the conducting of the professional and the one in the movie. I mean, you guys really do love classical music to the point that there's an aura spreading when you talk about it. @@waytoohypernova it might be a reference to a meme featured in Ling Ling 40 hrs about a composer's last work with a sudden F with no explanation and the op saying "did he predict press 'f' to pay respect" Sorry, I forgot the important details of that meme.
14:30 If you’re a show marching band like my high school marching band was then trumpets moving like that is totally normal and totally possible. I was a Clarinet and we would swing our instruments around while play them. At certain points in shows in between our marching movements we would stop and boogie. 17:26 you’d be suprised what you can do with a flute. We had them in my marching band.
I get making a song animated but marching band is not orchestra, you swing your horn and move your feet in a way that looks professional in marching band, you sit still and look professional in orchestra
@@Unfoundrumors yeah, I didn’t say anything regarding that. I was just explaining that it was possible. We never swung our instruments around in concert band.
This series was so well done that it tricked a girl I went to school with (and we were music majors) granted... She wasn't that great of a musician but still.. The S orchestra is supposed to comprised of all the weird outcast musicians (and the principal violin was notorious for only caring about playing "heavy metal violin" lol) which is why they did posing and he had gloves, also why the audience was stunned that they actually played well and waited to clap!
To be fair, this is the "Special Orchestra", which is made up of the school's loser-musicians. They just turn out to be the Underdog Good Musicians in the end.
Nah won't do man. They are not in highschool anymore. In university you can actually expect them to be good. For drama sake and cause of the perfectionism of the MC hey showed them as pretty bad xD
Flautist here: The one girl is not playing a professional flute. Pro flutes have a B foot joint (so they can play one note deeper, the B...)...these flutes are louder (and longer/heavier)...you need that to be heard in an orchestra...
I don’t even believe the girl is a flautist. In the one scene that zooms on her the notes are changing but her fingers remain down and don’t move at all. As well as that, the flute doesn’t appear to be making much contact with the groove of her chin, and her right hand is bent down and is not up. She also doesn’t tilt the flute down, she holds it up straight which isn’t typical of a professional player.
@@wayneshih8064 Yeah, you‘re actually right, i looked it up…i wasn‘t aware that pros use the flute with a c foot too, if they want :)…BUT: There sure are a couple of pieces that you cannot play in the original form without the low B note, eg Jolivet‘s flute concerto…but pro flautists generally got more than one flute, they sure got all the joints they need :)
The anime Nodame is way way more accurate. Don't let the live action distract you from that. Also, the dude is an actor, but if I'm not wrong his character was also definitely not the best violinist in the orchestra (btw he likes playing the dreaded electric violin like in our favourite talent shows if you know what I mean) but still was made concertmaster due to some circumstances.
Twoset roasts are somewhat like cinemasins. They roast purely the specific portrayal by the actor(s) in that specific scene. Any other details are not a concern
@@inevra4053 That's a bit unfair, Twoset clearly don't try to conjure artificial mistakes (like SS). They didn't watch the entire show and don't know the context, naturally, so they have to assume this is some ordinary orchestra performance.
Well, 'not the best violinist' shouldn't play worse than other 'regular' violinists in the orchestra. And no, Twoset's opinion shouldn't change even if they know the whole plot. What's the point of comparing it with actual orchestra if they do that?
@@ThomasSMuhn They do address it as such but towards the end, Eddy says the show is good so maybe they've seen it before they roasted it. Judging the scenes as objectively as possible might be better for a roast because if they'll be defending via context, it won't be as consistent with how they've done roasts so far. Also, they obviously have to nitpick ones with the more blatant mistakes. I honestly thought they'd be harsher on the instrument spinning and back arching but maybe they've been lenient cos other shows have done exponentially worse, or they do know some context. As the viewers, we should be able to asses the rest of the drama disregarding the accuracy of portrayal (however knowing those failures definitely contributes to the viewing experience). And maybe Twoset hopes that from all the other tips and facts they've given, everyone even non-musicians will be able to know the difference.
Doreen Ketchens begs to differ. But then again, that's jazz. Idk, it's possible if you're moving your head around for sure though to keep the embouchure (which it looks like the players in the video are? I cant really get a good frame stop to tell)
Lois nah, you definitely can. the sound comes out a fair bit worse but you definitely can without any trouble if you’re at least between beginner and intermediate levels
When Brett and Eddy said that it looked like the orchestra was conducting itself, my orchestra conducor actually cued us in and then left he stage until the end of the piece to let us conduct ourselves and so that the people in the middle of the wind orchestra could be seen by the parents. Bear in mind it was a training wind orchestra so the piece wasnt neccessarily the hardest thing out there, but it was still kinda hard. So it is possible for an orchestra to conduct itself.
As a professional musician we performed under the baton of a very famous conductor (whom I shall not name) who was often so drunk that no one could follow him. When this happened all musicians followed the Concertmaster instead. Unbelievably no music critic ever commented on this and we never heard anyone in the audience talk about it either. Thank God for the Concertmaster!
Scott Cho the cellos in my orchestra had to do that once... it was a training youth orchestra so we were like 12 and a bit shit but still made me wince every time lol
Would be funny, as he is so insecure and being carried by the section so hard that he forgets he's the one leading and starts following the ones who are following him :D
@Chris Pearson One question: does waving the trumpet around while playing induce doppler shifts audible in the audience? I'm kinda thinking Lesley here...
Honestly, as a pianist myself, this is my favourite Japanese drama about music and orchestra. With the trumpets pointing up and side to side, this is actually a normal thing. It’s used in “Friend Like Me” from Aladdin for example. It’s used to make a gesture that “something is going on” to the audience and used as a cue for other instruments.
I've been binging your videos. I have always loved classical music but barely know anything about it. Your breakdown of the moments before the performance starts was great, it's actually one of my most favorite parts in any performance... the tuning, the silence, and then the bow-- it lets all of US "tune in" too!

Not saliva, unless you actually spit instead of blowing. It's condensation from the hot air hitting the colder instrument
@@janne7263 At least some of it is saliva. Fluid droplets come out of your mouth when you blow air, not just when you intentionally spit. That's why coughing spreads airborne diseases more easily compared to exhaling from your nose with your mouth closed

This classical music theme TV drama was super famous and really popular in Japan back in 2006.
14:28 as a trumpet player, I can tell you this is very possible. Horn flashes are pretty common in marching bands, and just to have some fun during a song. Marching band also tends to require a higher horn angle because your audience is above you. (It's super fun when the spit starts rolling back through the mouthpiece)
tl;dr: It's just trumpets being trumpets :)
Yeah all the things they’re saying “I don’t know if that’s possible for the winds” are just common marching band moves. As long as your shoulders move separately from your core it’s totally doable :p

(The cellos then usually go next to the first violins and the violas next to the seconds.) A lot of standard orchestral repertoire from the 18th, 19th and (early)
20th centuries has passages that exploit the "antiphonal" arrangement of the two violin sections for special effects; these are lost in when the second violins sections are next to the first.

Big goof

Just a little basic info on Nodame Cantabile (Live Action):
The girl listening extremely intently was Nodame, the protagonist and a gifted but lazy pianist.
I think the overall context of live-actions is very important.

For example: ruclips.net/video/DPOeGWl6x4E/видео.html yes they are moving with intstrument, but
1) they are not moving just the instrument from left right, they are moving with
2) the instruments are not risen up to the sky, they are just moving from left to right or vice versa...
and that is the major difference, why is so unreal, even if ska brass players do it, because they do it naturally...

To be fair, this is the "Special Orchestra", which is made up of the school's loser-musicians. They just turn out to be the Underdog Good Musicians in the end.
yup, subtitled calls them underachievers
Nah won't do man. They are not in highschool anymore. In university you can actually expect them to be good. For drama sake and cause of the perfectionism of the MC hey showed them as pretty bad xD
So they need to act to hide they're not good enough ?
Flautist here: The one girl is not playing a professional flute. Pro flutes have a B foot joint (so they can play one note deeper, the B...)...these flutes are louder (and longer/heavier)...you need that to be heard in an orchestra...
Not really. Many flutists like Rampal use C foot one.
Actually, I think the deeper B is not a must note.....
Yeah, I wonder if their opinion would change knowing a little bit more of the story context
"Please don't talk during a classical symphony." *cough*
*sneeze*
Lemme just say that you cannot play a clarinet horizontaly. Believe me, I've tried.
I tried it for recorder too when I was younger, there was no sound
Doreen Ketchens begs to differ. But then again, that's jazz. Idk, it's possible if you're moving your head around for sure though to keep the embouchure (which it looks like the players in the video are? I cant really get a good frame stop to tell)
*sound of reed cracking*
Lois nah, you definitely can. the sound comes out a fair bit worse but you definitely can without any trouble if you’re at least between beginner and intermediate levels
Me too
I was mocking the trumpet angles during bands camp
When Brett and Eddy said that it looked like the orchestra was conducting itself, my orchestra conducor actually cued us in and then left he stage until the end of the piece to let us conduct ourselves and so that the people in the middle of the wind orchestra could be seen by the parents. Bear in mind it was a training wind orchestra so the piece wasnt neccessarily the hardest thing out there, but it was still kinda hard. So it is possible for an orchestra to conduct itself.
My band teacher did that once in class for a song and said we performed better than with him conducting-
As a professional musician we performed under the baton of a very famous conductor (whom I shall not name) who was often so drunk that no one could follow him. When this happened all musicians followed the Concertmaster instead. Unbelievably no music critic ever commented on this and we never heard anyone in the audience talk about it either. Thank God for the Concertmaster!
I love how at 6:33 they put their violins down perfectly synchronized
Wow they must have some telepathic thing going on
classically trained musicians XDD
Haha if orchestras are anything like brass bands that's just automatic
I noticed that too!!
Great minds think alike
Anime Character: We need to find the villain, it could be anyone
Concertmaster:
As someone who's played cello for over a decade that cello spin hurt my soul
Scott Cho the cellos in my orchestra had to do that once... it was a training youth orchestra so we were like 12 and a bit shit but still made me wince every time lol
I wish they watch the whole drama to see why the concert master isn’t as good lol
Maybe the violins didn’t stand up because the “concert master” didn’t stand up, and the violins have to follow the concert master, don’t they?
He is standing tho
Nah I think it s so the audience of the movie can.see one of the main character (concert master) who is the only one standing up in the section.
Would be funny, as he is so insecure and being carried by the section so hard that he forgets he's the one leading and starts following the ones who are following him :D
Nah, in this TV show, this concert master charactor was the person who suggested this standing formation.
They look like skittles w/ that big S on their shirts lmao
😭😭😂
What kind of skittles are you eating?😂
Chocolate Chip gosh this funny but exactly!! 😂 Black skittles? But kinda funny to think of them as skittles too Fun comments 😆

Trumpeters also rely on gravity.
Not to get spit running back into your mouth. Playing upwards for more than a few seconds can be nasty.
I did not need to know that. That's f**king disgusting. 😂
@@GabsARV yea ikr 😂 😂 😂
Hearing wind stories always bothered me as a percussionist.
@Chris Pearson One question: does waving the trumpet around while playing induce doppler shifts audible in the audience? I'm kinda thinking Lesley here...
Ohhh yeah, just imagining it makes me wanna feel sad.
Honestly, as a pianist myself, this is my favourite Japanese drama about music and orchestra. I really eddy and brett would dive deeper into the story to know why the conductor was not as good and the performance has come in an exaggerating way. Nodame Cantabile became popular amongst musicians for a reason

Gotta give a lot of thanks to Nodame Cantabile for making me start listening to a lot of classical music piece since I was young
This was my first shoujo anime and it got me interested in classical 😍😍😍

Sure, but look at the music they play. It isn't exactly Mahler.

The live action was well made tho, especially the two movies. Don't hate if u haven't seen it
Actor conductor: Me with my plastic HP wand
Actual conductor: Albums Dumbledore level
@Kiara Stuchbery Was it that bad that from his desperation he went on search for actual magic to make it sound not as sucky?
With the trumpets pointing up and side to side, this is actually a normal thing. It’s used in “Friend Like Me” from Aladdin for example. It’s used to make a gesture that “something is going on” to the audience and used as a cue for other instruments.
But it's no good for serious music, where you want the direction of the sound to be consistent.
I've been binging your videos. I have always loved classical music but barely know anything about it. Your breakdown of the moments before the performance starts was great, it's actually one of my most favorite parts in any performance... the tuning, the silence, and then the bow-- it lets all of US "tune in" too! Anyway, your editing is literally top notch, the sequence around 11:15 had me in stitches.
