    In 1875, the French composer Saint-Saëns came to Moscow to give concerts. He turned out to be a handsome, charming and very lively person. It turned out that he and Tchaikovsky had many common interests, for example, ballet. Both of them were regulars at ballet performances in their youth.
    One evening, three of them together with Nikolai Rubinstein staged a choreographic improvisation on the theme “Pygmalion and Galatea.” It happened on the stage of the concert hall of the Moscow Conservatory.
    The part of Pygmalion was danced by the 35-year-old professor of music theory Tchaikovsky, Galatea was portrayed by the 40-year-old Saint-Saëns, and his peer, the director of the conservatory, Nikolai Rubinstein, improvised the musical accompaniment at the piano, portraying a theater orchestra.
    There was no audience, however. This story was told in his book “The Life of Tchaikovsky” by the composer’s brother Modest.

      I know right? When I heard 32, I was like "No, that’s Beethoven numbered piano sonatas oh my god 😂" Like really, how could someone mix up Chopin’s ballades with Beethoven’s piano sonatas, just how?

    • @gatesurfer
      @gatesurfer 2 месяца назад

      With the exception of a couple of piano concertos, Chopin wrote exclusively for solo piano. While some of his works were transcribed for other instruments or even string ensembles, the vast majority were not. So a violinist will have heard or played some of those tunes, he would not be familiar at all with Chopin in general. The Ballades in particular are considered his best long form works, and yet they never to my knowledge have been transcribed for violin or anything else, probably because of their difficulty and length. There’s lots of good melodies in them, but they’re fairly repetitive, and they don’t allow the violin to breathe.
      So it is not surprising to me that Brett and Eddy don’t know much about the Ballades, although they probably have heard the first one many times. Everyone knows that one. Only pianists know about the other three.

    I love to see Eddy and Brett grow and experiment with new formats. 3 games in one video is great and the buzzer is a nice addition. But I do miss the cosiness of the older videos. Just two guys from next door, talking about their passion. Those videos made classical music more relatable because of the relaxed and informal way it was presented.
    I’m afraid the sterile white studio and the purple lighting are creating more distance between them and the viewers. And they don’t talk into the camera any more, but to an unknown person somewhere in the studio, which makes it less personal as well.
    Of course they can’t just keep repeating what they did before over and over again. That would kill all creativity. I just hope they will be able to bring back some of the cosiness again.
    I enjoyed the video anyway, because they are still their silly selves. It’s just this new format that needs some tweaking IMHO

      They spent December in Singapore, where they do not have that cozy home studio. They used the same studio, where they recorded the Christmas video for recording three more. (1Brett vs 9 WOMEN, Guess the Classical Musician and this one.) Considering their year long world tour, either they stop making videos or we have to accept the different studios.
      I understand the 'two guys' nostalgie, but after beeing stuck together 24/7 for 4-6 weeks during tour legs, they might want to enjoy the company of their friends. (See the two Brisbane videos.)
