- On the N3 Between Johannesburg and Durban, a bridge with a mysterious name crosses over the road. Spook Brug. Haunted Bridge. In a Just Off the Highway Halloween special, Al Prodgers goes in search of the origin of the ghost story and tests whether the haunting effect is true or whether it’s all an illusion.

Jeepers Al! Now I have to go there! Fascinating 😮
Thanks Ulandi! It's a pretty town, well worth a stop.
Another great SA story Mr. Prodgers! Love your videos
Thanks very much, Leon!
Awesome Al, loved it - my dad always told me about this - will also go have a peek one day - optical illusion or not it's still cool. Apparently there are two actual magnetic hills in SA - Kwazulu-Natal: On the R74 provincial route between Greytown and Weenen. Coordinates: 28°55′15″S 30°11′49.8″E and Somerset West, City of Cape Town, Western Cape: Spook Hill, on Parel Vallei Road. Coordinates: 34°3′28″S 18°51′36.50″E - thought to mention it since we were on the topic ;-)
Thanks Theunis! I'll do some research. Might make a good episode.
Awww, what a great story! I'm almost sad that it has a perfectly reasonable explanation 😂
Great work, Al and team❤
Hi Melinta, yep I hate it when the facts spoil a good story! thanks for your comment and for sharing.
Great video! Came about this channel as part of a recommendation from Mike Rogers. Very good and look forward to more episodes.
Thank you. I'm glad you've enjoyed it so far. Please say Hi to Mike from me.
Thank you Al, another great story, I used to live there a few years back and loved cycling up/down there
Thank you. I really enjoyed visiting this lovely little town. Full of surprises.
Same, I never cycled just jogged 😂❤🙏 beautiful in the morning. 6'ish in summer.
@@FofaBeijFeli It's a lovely part of the country.
Thanks for a great story. I watch your channel as much for the stories as for getting a glimps of that magnificent car you drive. My dad and brother both bought Coronas from Denel Toyota in the early 1970's - one blue one red. I use to drive my dad's around often. Sometimes with his permission. Lovely cars.
Thanks for sharing that memory. Mine was resprayed at some point, but I think they tried to match the original blue. Would you be interested in an episode that goes into more detail about the car? I've been considering one.
@@JustOfftheHighway I certainly would.
The original colour was not a bright blue. It was more like a baby blue if there is such a colour.@@JustOfftheHighway
Another great episode. Heidelberg is on the Travel &Things list of places to visit! What I do want to know is, why the skid marks on that stretch of road?
Dunno... perhaps someone saw a ghost? Thanks for the kind comment, David.
My vriend dit is omdat hulle wind gat is agter 'n stuurwiel en van hulle gesuip is dat die briek merke op die teepad is .
Hey bru...me & my 3 mates we're on that bridge in 89...Mark was driving and stopped before the bridge,..pulled it out of gear..dropped the handbrake...sat back & crossed he's arms....The Passat rolled uphill....😮...the weirdest part...we had sausage rolls in tinfoil on the Passat's back window board...half of them were eaten 😳....we never touched them
😅I thought ghosts only ate I-scream.
Excellent again Al ! wow I could see there was no strong downward gradient on the road yet the car and tennis ball moved very freely.
Thanks Rob. Yes, it's freaky and fun and worth a short detour next time you pass through Heidelberg. But the "ghostly" effect only works in one direction. Into Heidelberg, not the other way.
Good build up suspense Al, I like the story. Please do more!
Apologies for my late reply. Somehow I missed this comment. Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed this strange little story.
I drive under that bridge at least 2 to 3 times each week..always wondered about the name...Baie danke, goed om te weet!❤
Thanks! This is exactly why I do "Just Off the Highway." You've made my day.
Been there a number of times. It always amazes me because it does look very uphill from the bottom.
Yep. Agreed. There's that moment when the car begins rolling the "wrong" way that definitely messes with your senses.
Ghostly indeed, using a "spirit" level. 😂
Glad you liked that one.
@@JustOfftheHighwayMy maid would call you a smat koookie.
Thanks!
Thank you! 🙏
Doing your level best, I see.
😂😜
Thanks
Thanks very much for your support!
I recently found your channel with the video on the creation of Johannesburg, I'm completely fascinated by the fact that things you speak about are not taught in school.
I have a question about this one , which direction do you have to be heading in for this to work ? I'd love to go for a site seeing trip.
Loving your videos !!
Thank you! Yes, it's sad that schools only seem to prioritise a narrow selection of local history.
Re direction: It's best to start at End Street as I did in the episode, because Commissioner is a one-way. Be safe!
*This was fun*
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed my little "ghost" story.
Herinner my aan facts or fiction. Goeie episode, Al. Thank you.
Groot plesier! Dankie vir die kommentaar.
There is a road like that in Somerset West. At night the car must be switched off, in neutral and hand brake off. The car rolls up the hill.........
I didn't know about that one. Weird feeling when it happens.
Thanks!
Thanks so much, Andre! Your support is much needed and greatly appreciated.🙏
Same situation on the road between Voortrekkerhoogte and the Pretoria prison at Voortrekkerhoogte!
I didn't know that. Thanks!
I've experienced this myself in Port Elizabeth close to Sardinia Bay I tell people about it and they don't believe me until they actually go there and experience it for themselves 😮
Wow, I didn't know about it happening in PE either. If possible, please share details.
@@JustOfftheHighway I'm from Cape Town only details I can give is that you drive from Skoenmakerskop beach towards Sardinia bay which is about+- 10 km apart and it's the road just before you get Sardinia bay, sorry that's all help I can give you hope you find it and post a video looking forward to it
Thanks very much for your comment and for sharing the details.
😅I guess the shocks are fine! This was funny. Halfway through I thought I wonder if the guys from ghost Hunters need to come test this. A few seconds later, a tennis ball in its lead roll 😂 (genius) busted that myth entirely. Spirit level! Lmao! It's 24h40 now and you've got me laughing loudly here with people sleeping in the house! 😂
Thanks for the lovely, generous comment. I'm glad you enjoyed the episode and the bits of silliness we threw in.
@@JustOfftheHighway Very well done. I would totally watch if this were a TV show. I can't remember and I'm sure this was when I was a child but there was an Afrikaans TV show, I think either end of 80s or the beginning of the 90s, where the presenter was an actor and on a farm and telling old ghost stories mixed in with old boereraat and so on. I remember what the actor looked like but not his name nor the name of the show. Like this, it was fascinating. Your presenting skills are on point!
We were told of the bridge and didn't believe it, our friends then took us their and lo and behold, the car moved slowly up the hill.
A similar incident took place on Table Mountain
Yes, it really works. Thanks for your comment. BTW, can you tell me where on Table Mountain you experienced it? I've never heard that before.
@@JustOfftheHighway back in 89,went to Cape Town on honeymoon and of course to introduce my new wife to my folks as I stayed in Jo burg and my folks in Goodwood.
As my wife had never been to Cape Town or Table Mountain,I drove up the mountainside road, all the way past the cable car entrance till up around the 4th or 5th bend,(that part of the road is now closed) we got the car, a 1977 golf 1500 GLS, it was dark, pulled up the handbrake, left the motor running, lights on climbed out the car and walked to the edge to look out over the inland and the ocean to the far left. The gradient wasn't very steep, we turned around expecting to see the car, but it wasn't where I left it, I run to the road and looked down expecting to see headlights showing up to the sky, my wife looked up the road, and she calmly Said, there's the car. The damned thing was inching along at a snails pace. Probably about 6 meters from where I left it idling. I ran up and climbed in and stopped it. The handbrake was on, but, I realized I hadn't actually locked the handbrake properly. When we got down from the mountain I spoke to a parksboard member about my experience, he stated that it may have been a magnetic field pulling the car along.
So when I saw your story, it just reminded me of our experience on Table Mountain. However, the last time I visited the mountain, we noticed that that section of the road was barricaded and no one was allowed to enter. That was in 2021 August. It sounds crazy, but it was a heart stopping experience to say the least. 😆
@@brucepiek7551 Apologies for my delayed reply, but somehow I missed your comment. Thanks for the great story!
Is it Heidelberg in Western cape or Gauteng province?
Hi, it's Heidelberg, Gauteng.
Isn't Heidelburg where the T.V. series Trompie was filmed ?
You've got me stumped, I'm afraid. I have no idea.
Baie dankie! Jou kommentaar is een van die beste wat ek nog ontvang het. Ek is so bly dat julle die episode en die ervaring geniet het.
Ha Ha
I know it well
Hell of a story that spook brug
Yes indeed. It's a great story. Thanks.
The saddest thing about that bride is how the railings have been stolen.
Thanks
Hi, thanks very much for your generous support! I'm so glad you liked this episode. Please feel free to browse the other videos in the series and let me know what kind of stories you enjoy. Regards, Al Prodgers
Here is chanllenge for you ...the old germiston prison and mortuary was on the corners of joubert and railway street...germiston south....today only two palm trees are left....the main entrance of the prison was just across the palm trees....and the germiston mortuary was next to the prison....there are no archive available on this....hard to find anyway....you can make contact with me ...i can point out the location for you....today there are flats build on that premises....catalinabay is the name of the flats.....

It's magnetic pull or something
Optical illusion. It looks like an uphill, but it's actually a slight downhill.
Can you do the "Merriespruit ramp" I was only 5years old but remember it
Thanks for your suggestion. I have friends who lived so close, the sludge stopped less than a block from their home. I'll speak to them and see if there's an episode I can put together.
Yes. 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thanks!
Urban legend, I guess 😂😂😂
Yep. Simply an optical illusion with a romantic ghost story attached. But still a lot of fun.
