Nice video thanks. I am surprised you did not mention the old Rand Airport which sureley must have preceded Jan Smuts Airport.
As far as I know Rand airport was first airport Built-in 1920 Jan Smuts airport was not built then It was only in 1952
Fascinating
Stumbled on your channel and I'm loving it. Local really can be lekker.
Thank you for the great history.
Thank you for the gift of bringing our 'lost' history alive in such an enticing video 😊
I was an South African Airways employee. Some of my colleagues worked at Palmietfontein. We did aircraft maintenance.
Thank you, most informative!
Amazing around 1980 I went with my future husband and family on fishing trips there and never knew this!
My mom grew up in Primrose and ahe always said Daisy lived not far away.

Wow thank you so much Had no idea
Wow thank you so much for such a unique history lesson definitely earned my subscription 😊😊😊
Paying for Premium I do not expect intrusive adverts . I will not be visiting this site again.
Here's a suggestion. You might get better results if you address your complaints to a company called RUclips, since they control what you see on their site. I am a content provider who has absolutely no control over ads.
Your debit order probably bounced and you are back on regular viewing. Or you did not sign in. Either way it's your issue to sort out and not the YT channel you are watching.
@@CorneEngelbrecht78 My debit order has not bounced. I did sign in. I have never had such intrusive advertising on any other channel I have watched, and I have watched hundreds. I will not watch this channel again.
@@JustOfftheHighway Ok Tot Siens
Why on earth would you choose to pay youtube money? If you cant understand the fact that the channels you watch do not have any control over the ads delivered then you deserve to continue paying youtube for something that can be done for free by your browser.
Hello Al, this was my first time watching your channel and I thoroughly enjoyed this episode and so you have gained a subscriber in me. Looking forward to more similar content 👍.
@AL PRODGERS - Have You ever Investigated the WOMENS & CHILDREN CONCENTRATION CAMP just Off of Columbine Road Mondeor - (Suideroord). This Stupid Money Greedy Government Gave permission for People to Build on the PROTECTED AREA - FOR MANY YEARS - HOPE YOU HAVE SUCCESS TO FIND THE GRAVES, There is a HUGE Headstone Up there.
40 years ago a full dam took 3 years before there was a water shortage. Now a year.
Thanks!
Loved this history story, Dec 24
Super interesting!
Another excellent episode Al.
Thank you, Al. Very interesting indeed.
When recent history is portrayed as major discovery
Platitude portrayed as scorn.
This is an amazing revelation to me. Spent many years in that area growing up and had no idea of this history. Thank you só much for sharing. From Melbourne Australia. Dankie
Brilliant, fantastic work👌👍👍👍
Thanks!
I actually live in one of the first “cottages” that were built when they build the dam wall.
Wow! 👍
The Postcard was to CS Lewis.
Incredible!!!
Thank you 🙏 Strange Johannesburg.
"...growing in to a young man, becoming more demanding and more difficult ." Luckily, Daisy had just the right medicine for that😂
Yep!
And this was the sign that we as humans should have not started mining in to this planet and now we sit white climate change as the after affect remember Noah ark it was just water nou its gone thanks to mining so now no one should complain there's no water and it's going to get worse and there's nothing to stop this not even a cruise function is going to fix this one around he has already given up hos son for us but no one listens to GOD now wear the brunt
Thank you for a wonderfully interesting and very well presented look into the past. I've been to many of these places and have experienced some of the development, thank you for rekindling special memories!
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed the show. It was challenging to make.
@@JustOfftheHighway I can imagine! Finding the amazing footage you have must have been quite a challenge. Well done, much appreciated!
I remember the Deneyville Hotel when I had a small yacht on the dam .. It was pretty run down but was more comfortable than sleeping onboard .. it also had a bar which was important for us guys ..this was in the 1980.s I believe it was built by Imperial Airways for passangers and aircrew of the flying boats ? Can anyone confirm that that was the case ? Long since demolished.
Thanks I can't confirm exactly who built it, but tit was used by crew and passengers. The old stone steps to the entrance still exist.
What happened to the British that was responsible for the concentration camps that killed women and children were they also send for trail " war crimes" ? Sorry just curious to know
Why is the dam wall blurred out @ 1:30? Weird....
I agree. There are so many pictures, but when I received permission to film, we were informed that the wall is a key point and told not to film it. So I complied. The authorities were gracious enough to allow me to film in a controlled area.
That's very interesting, it does make sense. Thanks for the feedback! Great video.
Another fascinating video. Thank you so much, Al Prodgers. Long may you continue.
Thank you for watching and for your kind words.
An amazing story… a brilliant Narator !!! Well done on your Series. We do have a colourful past👍
Thanks very much for your kind comment.
I have to agree with @stuartthom3713. Your position of the Palmietfontein Airport is not correct. The GPS coordinates are 26° 20' 7.20" S, 28° 08' 28.80" E.
Yes Mollie you are correct. Al mentions the correct location - the visual graphic is out with about 6 Km. I take responsibility as I created this graphic for Al. This was an honest mistake and I apologize for the oversight. Skuus mense. (Al now you certainly have to do an episode about Palmietfontein Airport.)
Yes, You're right. I was rushing to complete the episode and made a mistake. I will follow up in 2025.
Al, one of the best episodes yet! Well done. Always a great watch.
Hi Alex! Thank you!
This was really interesting ive been to the vaal and live in south Africa and didn't know this... although i was only born late 80s
You're not alone. I only read about it recently.
As far as I know the Vaal dam also submerged the settlement called " Westhuizen". Unfortunately I do not know the location of where this settlement/ town was.
Fascinating. Another thread to follow. Thanks.
Brilliant loved this history I didn't know any of this living in my bubble
Thank you. You're not alone. I only read about it recently.
This is caucasian stories in Africa not african stories
Enjoy your battle against reality. You'll find it's quite tenacious.
What a superb evocation of the heyday of Imperial Airways in Africa and, especially, in South Africa. I am now hooked on Just Off the Highway, just as many fish were hooked in the Vaal Dam on lazy, hazy Sunday's back in the 1970's..
Thanks for your delightful comment!
Such a pity that probably more than 40% of the water is lost through leaking pipes etc
