The issue is that advance money and instant fame are damn near irresistible to someone who is young and broke and has been dreaming about being a famous musician their whole life. ESPECIALLY if you’re struggling and desperate, and don’t have a safety net in the form of family or an inheritance or something, that advance check is like instant relief, plus the gratification of being an instant celebrity. You have to be extremely disciplined and have smart people around you that really care about you in order to avoid this. Helps to be in a good financial position as well but that’s not the case for most young aspiring artists.

Everyone already knows this. The issue is that advance money and instant fame are damn near irresistible to someone who is young and broke and has been dreaming about being a famous musician their whole life. ESPECIALLY if you’re struggling and desperate, and don’t have a safety net in the form of family or an inheritance or something, that advance check is like instant relief, plus the gratification of being an instant celebrity. You have to be extremely disciplined and have smart people around you that really care about you in order to avoid this. Helps to be in a good financial position as well but that’s not the case for most young aspiring artists.
