Moving out, moving up, moving on! How do you find moving boxes? Do you have to hire a moving company? Here's my advice on how to move the most quickly and easily.
I have moved house 12 times in the past 2 years since graduating from college. Whether your moving into a dorm or apartment, a new house, a sublet, or airbnb (I've been there) here are some tips and moving hacks as you're packing and planning to help stay on top of it.
Also the tape that I used is TEFLON TAPE or plumbers tape, rather than electrical tape - whoops! Clearly I don't do many repairs, lol

Hey! I'm Ahsante the Artist :) I make vlogs and short films about culture, social issues and justice, Harvard college, how to adult as a post grad, and what's going on with me. I strive to live spiritedly and think creatively. I hope you join me!
Plenty of awesome moving tips in these comments! I've landed at my new place and I hope to Never. Move. Again. Also a note: the tape I use for the bottles is actually Plumbers Tape or Teflon Tape, rather than electrical tape!
These are very useful tips! Thanks! I once moved using my 1987 Subaru hatchback, all by myself. I did it at night. It was much easier for me. Less traffic. It took 12 trips. I also went back and cleaned the apartment. I started around 7pm and finished at about 6am, just in time for my landlord to show the apartment! ***Another tip: Plastic storage bins. I was able to organize and pack early using these and the bins were space efficient for me. IKEA bags are great too!
I’m procrastinating watching this instead of packing up my apartment rn😩🤣
SAMEEEE omg
Me
😅😅😅🤣🥰
Currently lol
It's not procrastination if it's relevant, it's rest and research.
My favourite tip is to do a massive clear out before the move. all the shit you can give away, do. be ruthless!
This!
So true!!
If you're using a moving truck or moving crew, I'd definitely recommend packing valuables that you don't want to put in a truck in your own vehicle and move it there yourself. It'll save you extra stress from something that's already stressful enough.
I can't believe I've never thought about using my clothing for packing material. Great idea!
Moving in 3 days.. I FEEL SO UNMOTIVATED TO PACK EVERYTHING THIS FEELS HORRIBLE 😭
My best tip: use bankers boxes.
They fold together and have lids with no tape needed. They have hand holes, and they're small. If you fill them with something heavy like books you can still pick them up. And you can acheive a better tetris style of packing and use the whole volume of your car.
"that's when you know"
"i'm not trying to be classy, i'm just trying to get out"
You gotta do what you’ve gotta do!
I have moved abroad a couple of times, and my main tip would be to have access to a scanner weeks before the move. Personal documents, school files, notebooks, scan everything you can because omg the times I've needed digital copies of basically my life for: studying, health and migration proceedings, even at the airport!
i have NO intentions of moving soon but wow that tape PRO TIP WAS TOO GOOD.
Stick the vacuum hose into the top of trash bags to vacuum out the air and save space! I also used pantry items (oatmeal packets and boxed foods) for fillers in kitchen boxes!
As a 25 year-old who is now having to move across cities, this was INCREDIBLY insightful. Thank you for sharing!!! I never had to move with so much more furniture (or basically other than my clothes and personal belongings) but now I have to and I was stumped LOL hope you're doing well!!
The exception to the pack like things together rule is if you have a lot of books and/or notebooks! A huge box of books is HEAVY! Spread those guys out!!
Totally!
Thank you so much! I’ve moved 6, now turning into 7 times and the move process is so draining. Thank you for giving these tips, I’m going to try these
oh, my second tip is to be aware of your own limitations!!! I know that if I lift things my back will hurt for the next week or more. if i've got people helping offering to carry things (last move was my dad and brother) then LET them do the lifting. I did all the scurrying around with smaller items and making sure all the fragile things were taken care of, moving vehicles in and out, etc. I lefted a few heavy things but as soon as i felt sore i stopped. I know from previous moves that if I knock myself out on moving day I will be almost totally bedridden for days afterwards, and it SUCKS to be stuck lying down when all your shit is in boxes.
your personality is so vibrant and precious
I genuinely loved this, I'm moving for the third time in two weeks (don't worry, my stuff all fits in my parents' car) and all these tips are brilliant; thank you!
Liquor stores are usually a great spot for boxes. The one near my home keeps empty boxes out in the front of the store for easy access!
“I’m not trying to be classy, I’m just trying to get out.” 🤣 👏🏻
I love you sense of humor 😀. I see I’m on the right track with your tips. thanks
i've been really stressed about having to move back in with my parents, so this helped a lot. i only have 2 weeks left til i need to be fully out, so the little i've gotten done has made everything else more daunting. the biggest issue has been sorting where things are going.
What a beautiful musical intro!!! I hit replay on the multiple. The point of moving being a test of friendship is such good point.
Wow this is the most helpful moving video I’ve watched out of DOZENS!!! Seriously, thank you! 🙏💖
I think your awesome!!!
I've moved 8 times over the years and these tips are still working for me.
I'm praying this next move will be MUCH easier as I'm pretty much chucking or giving everything away - starting fresh!!
Thanks again this was Brilliant
You have such great vibes!! I loved watching this video!!
Literally THE BEST moving video. Fast, comprehensive, helpful.
This is such a timely video, I'm moving in 16 days! Thank you for this awesome video!
yaassss you did the moving video! 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
Yes! Finally!!
Im so glad I watched this. Ty!
This is super helpful! Thanks!
I
Have to move in 4 weeks. I haven’t moved in 7 years. I’m a single mom and you’re right I just visited the Uhaul site to rent a truck and only two trucks available…. Yes happens to be early September like you mentioned on your video.
This was so helpful thank you for this video !
I never thought about using my cloths for packing material. Loved the vlog, keep posting more such videos.
Thank you so much for making this video.
Omg Im moving into my apartment for the first time after living in the dorms for 2.5 years, 1.5 year at home, and finally moving back to campus to finish my degree!!
Thank you for outlining your tips Ahsante!!
Love this video, thanks so much!!!
Thanks for the tips! Planning on moving this fall! I didn't think about more than 2 weeks to book out a Uhaul!
Man! These were some great tips! Now I have to go and open some of my boxes to better pack them lol.. thank you!
This is so helpful, thanks for this video because I'm moving very soon!
"As always, remember to live spiritedly and think creatively."
Especially when you're moving.
I would add, make sure to load the heavy, large, bulky, cheap things first. As far as moving goes, I've heard that four moves is equivalent (not identical, but equivalent) to a fire, just in terms of how much one throws out. Of course, to be a frequent mover, one must be organized, and that means keeping one's clutter to a minimum. So paring down one's possessions means going through them on a regular basis and asking, "How long since I've used this? How long since I've used that?" If it's been more than a year, strongly consider getting rid of it. It's a pretty safe bet, if you haven't had any use for it in the _last_ year, you probably won't have any use for it in the _next_ year, bank statements and accounting forms excepted.
Those are great tips! Loading things into the van can feel like a game of Tetris, you definitely have to have your strategy. And clearing out stuff you don't need really helps as well.
Good tips, great use of humor!
Helpful. Clear. Thank you.
Loved this video... Entertaining and with good info...thx
Thank you so much your tips made alot of sense
I love your personality 😂👌🏽
Love this
I just watch this video! & I didn’t even finish the video yet, I just wanted comment before I finish the video. I like you.. you sound like a really nice & fun person.

I loved this video!!! your videos are so well presented and helpful and make me feel like i can get. shit. done.
Heck Yeah!! Go out and get it! Thanks :)
great video and tips. thanks
Thus is so useful because my mom siblings and I are moving
It was so helpful 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you!
I am a fan of packing clothing (et cetera) in plastic trash bags.
I prefer not to because you cant stack them neatly and compactly like boxes.
That's plumbers tape. Not electrical tape btw. Electrical tape definitely has adhesive, just an fyi
Oh shoot, you already said. My bad
At 3:50, thats NOT electrical tape! Looks like teflon tape, which is for sealing connections on hose threads.
I already addressed this in the pinned comment!
@@AhsanteB What is a "pinned comment???"
@@JM-nh8yp It should be the first comment you see at the top of the comments section, I made it shortly after publishing the video
“I’m not trying to be classy I’m just trying to get out” hahahahaha
Thank you
THANK YOU
I thought I had some creative ideas for moving cheaply 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
I'm planning on moving so this was VERY helpful. Thanks!!!
Great tips! Especially using your clothes as cushioning for items; That is so resourceful. Now Im curious as to why all the moves in one year at that! Must have been exhausting to do that.
Thanks for sharing this vid and the opening song was funny and chipper haha.
I agree on not making any other plans. I had an original moving date for my house, and it got changed because closing was changed, and then the person to help my dad was only available on certain days, and everything was boxed up because we thought i was moving earlier, so we had to do it that next weekend, which happened to be the weekend of a friend from work's wedding. Her wedding was on Sunday but they did the heavy moving thursday and friday, i had to do a MASSIVE shopping trip friday, and then Saturday was spent building many piece of new furniture so Sunday had to be almost all the unpacking that I either needed immediately or needed help with because I had to go back to work on Monday(again things didn't happen the weekend we thought it would) and I was so tired and so sore on Sunday I was practically crying. There was no WAY i could have gotten cleaned up and dressed up and gone to a wedding. Then I still had literally a month of trying to unbox a box here and there of things that weren't urgent necessities.
Whoof! That sounds like quite a project! Yeah, moving is always so stressful and things seem to always take longer than you think they will. I'm usually completely wiped out afterwards.
It was a huge project but it was all worth it. I love my house and it feels like my sanctuary :-)
I'm moving to my first shared flat to start university in a month or so :> thank you very much gonna keep these tips in mind! ( i actually wrote a list)
I love your personality and your cute Lil face 💜 Keep being awesome gurl👏
You rock
The white tape you used seems to be the Teflon tape not electrical tape
just one little thing. That tape was plumbing tape, not electrical tape. Big difference. Electrical tape is sticky, whereas plumbing tape is not
Is it weird that this video made me want to move? I'm going on my third year of living in the same apartment. It's the longest I've lived in the same place during my adult life and I don't know how to cope lol
Lol, we have the opposite problem! It is my DREAM to one day renew a lease.
Wow, I can not even imagine!
I dont even really want a house for myself when im old enough to move, my dream is to find a nice apartment. i love tiny spaces!
You’re like me. My family says I have itchy feet.
Thank you. I'm moving up the coast, except I have no idea which family member I'm gonna be with since I dont have my own place figured out.
Moving in college is no fun! I had to move out at the end of every year, and one year I changed apartments halfway through the year. I also studied abroad for a year, I had to "move" rooms a couple times through the year. Luckily, since it was abroad, I had pretty much just a hockey duffel bag, carry-on suitcase and a regular backpack.
Funny, there were two videos today in my subs related to moving - yours and one from the New Age Creators (Chase). Maybe it's a sign?
Oh man, that's a lot of college moving! Yeah college is such a transient time. And after I read this comment I went and found Chase's video (amazing as always)! It's that time of year I guess!
Your voice never seizes to amaze me.
I have a feeling this might be one of the most useful videos I'll ever watch.
Also friends are probably going to be way more careful with your stuff than hired movers.
Wait, that's what you call electrical tape in English? Interesting... Wait. Google images look different. What you got there is teflon tape I think. Which is used to seal pipes, not electric stuff. (At least I never seen it used for that.)
Also, if you're moving further away: start emptying your fridge (and other food) EARLY. Make a rough meal plan for the last month or so to somehow get rid of that bulk bag of lentils without having to eat nothing else in the last week. For anything you can't possibly finish in time (like, a kilo of salt), find friends who want it.
Before the day of the move, locate the nearest supermarket or at least convenience store, so if you suddenly realise you don't have any toilet paper you know where to go.
For furnishing a new place on the cheap, second hand is your friend. Be that online or brick and mortar charity/recycle shops.
Thanks Karola! Yeah, friends over movers any day.
Wait, I just realized the tape is more commonly called Teflon tape - I'll make a note in the description too: www.homedepot.com/p/1-2-in-x-520-in-Thread-Seal-Tape-31273/202206819 Thanks for pointing that out!
And emptying your fridge is a MUST, those are great tips!
Friends over movers seems like good life advice in general ^^
Welcome ^^ Never heard of teflon tape before I started my current job to be fair, I guess it's a fairly specialised item ^^

Viewing vids looking for any tips that may be helpful. Also, to give a couple that may not have been covered.😄 I'll be moving within a couple months, so I've been decluttering/organizing & packing for quite a while now, bc I've actually been planning on it for at least a year. It's > never < too soon/early to start this whole process.
Okay, a couple tips off top of my head, I use dish towels to wrap kitchen items such as dishes, fragile items, pictures, etc.
I use my empty/cleaned out & lined kitchen trash can to fill w/liteweight canned goods/boxed foods or just freezer items. Then when ya immediately unload those perishables, you'll have an empty, clean & lined kitchen wastecan!!😉
Same thing for bathroom ... pack either bathroom supplies or small linen items; such as washclothes, soap, etc ... so when ya unpack you'll immediately have an empty wastebasket!!😉
Oh ya can always use washcloths, hand towels, etc to wrap up items.😉
Well, that's it for now.
Thanks for your great vid!! 👊
Completely unrelated but it’s funny that you moved from Boston on September 1st because that’s my birthday and my hometown 🤣
I will soon move out for the first time and it will be abroad Which is scary but really exciting thanks for your tips
Oh wow! Good luck with your move, that's exciting!
Ahsante the Artist thanks will definitely be easier after watching your video 🤗
Good luck, it'll be fine! :) Been there, done that, best tip I can give is research the area you'll live in beforehand, get some offline maps or something about it with info on where to get food, basic household items (dishes, towels etc) and some place that sells internet/mobile phone services. And then have fun with it! :D
KarolaTea those are great tips i wouldn't think about downloading maps but it seems like such a great idea thank you 🤗
Shoe stores are a great free option for free boxes
I used painting tape to seal my bottles and you can put items in desk drawers and dresser drawers to save space. Good video
I found you from we the unicorns article ❤️
Yay! Welcome!
Ahsante the Artist Ty! 😊
I’m not trying to be classy, I’m just trying to get out 😂. Yes that’s me!
Me right now 😫 haven’t even started
Yasss
I found my moving buddy 😉
The tape it tephlon not electical
I’m here for the Dreamgirls songs queen
I’m moving with my mom becuase her boyfriend is a drug addict and isn’t abusive physicaly but he isn’t a good person. We’re moving all out our stuff by ourselves but we have very very heavy furniture so after we move all out stuff we’re hiring movers for furniture. We live in a small town so it should be quite easy
Hi Ashante. M moving but a LOT of stuff. I need help, more...
Very helpful 😳
Happy to help!
oh god i hate the end of august so much. i've done 6 full moves since 2012, 3.5 no-furniture moves (into/out of a dorm and a sublease that also involved switching rooms halfway through) since 2011, and 1 family move back in 2006. i still live in my college town and every single lease in town is september 1st (or later, depending on the apartment complex) through august 31st. it's super annoying because if you're moving into a new lease you're basically homeless for at least a night. i was lucky this time since the friend whose room i took moved to the nearby much larger city where they don't have a ridiculous housing situation and so they got their keys a few weeks ago and so she moved out earlier than the 31st. hoping and praying my new housemates want to stick around even longer (this'll be their fourth year in this house) and that my job contract gets extended another year or i find a new job so i don't have to do this again in a year.
also jobs with vacation time are fucking amazing. (this is my first time having that so i took off three days and now have a 6-day weekend and it's wonderful)
also also, overly-specific protip: if you cosplay, don't buy tickets for a convention taking place the weekend of or the weekend after you move. and especially don't decide to start a new cosplay 3 weeks before said convention and work on that when you're supposed to be packing and cleaning. you might die.
just remembered. when i moved into my last place i took my full size mattress from the parking lot to the apartment, up the flight of outside stairs, and up the flight of inside stairs, all by myself. it might have also been drizzling since it was january instead of september. that was awful i do not recommend it. this time my dad helped me and my new place only had one stair from the garage into the kitchen lol
Wow you have been through some moves!! Oh man, taking a full size mattress up several flights of stairs by yourself is super impressive. Moving is such a struggle!
My family has 2 weeks to move and we haven't found a place and my mom is annoyed that I keep on asking her we need to find a place now and my dad is also trying to tell her 😔 I'm so stressed because it's my last year of high school and I need my own room idk what to do I'm stuck and depressed
I don’t know who she is but I like her
notification squad
+Indi Dip whoop!!
We move in 10 days. Not planned to be that quick
Oh god moving sucks so bad. Im moving interstate at the end of this year and I am Dreading
Not me planning to move September 1st 🤣🤣
