My husband works as a mover. In his profession he gets pretty close and intimate with peoples’ lives and belongings, often packing them as well as transporting them. He’s been doing this for ten years and truly loves his job but he never gets over three things: 1. People have SO much stuff they obviously don’t use, shut away in places that can’t easily be reached, and yet they pay SO MUCH MONEY to have it moved. 2. People often move just to be able to store their belongings. They pay considerable money to buy a bigger house or rent a bigger apartment just to accommodate their stuff. 3. A lot of the time even when they’ve moved to a bigger space it’s still too small for all the stuff (and furniture). The beautiful new house is instantly crowded and cluttered, even before they get unpacked. And this is the norm. It’s nothing unusual and it happens in all families no matter their socioeconomic status. People don’t realise how much owning things costs. How much money you can save by scaling down your belongings.
Sadder still.... my father owned a storage facility. You wouldn’t believe the junk people pay to store. Out of sight... out of mind. But, they keep paying to store it.
@@grogers511 Yes, my husband have worked for companies that offer storage solutions, it's quite common in the moving business here in Sweden. Part of the job at those companies was to empty storage boxes ("boxes", they're big as a smaller room) where the owner hadn't paid the rent for months, and drive the things inside to charity. Most things people stored, he said, was basically junk. Just stuff. Old fast fashion clothes and shoes, books, Ikea furniture, maybe some hobby equipment. Nothing of high value, neither monetary nor emotional. Things that cost the owner thousands of dollars each year to hold on to. Again, there's no special demographic that does this. It's really sad to think about. Imagine what most people could do with $1000-$2000 a year.
I love movers! We are moving at the end of the month and I am 40% packed and I always stage for the movers. Their job isn't to organize me...it is to move me. De cluttering when I am packing gets easy and brutal. I gotta LOVE it to move it.
As a moving company we're constantly moving folks untouched extra boxes of stuff from one basement or attic to another. It's wild how often people are crushed by the burden of their own possessions.
For me hiring a mover is worth it 100%. Then part of that process is making that affordable. The best way to do that is be packed up and only bring what you love with you. Less time equals more affordable mover bill.
I really wish I had known about this video 8 years ago when I moved from living alone in an apartment to moving in with a relative who had basically everything and So I wished I had gone through my stuff dec 2012 and got rid of all things I did not “love” or “needed” because in end several of the things I brought in got ruined due to water leaking, stopped working or got destroyed in other ways and if I had just not bothered in first place I wouldn’t be wondering now all this time how to get mould out of the bottom edges of books! 1- Start early. We often overestimate the time we have and you can sell, donate and it makes the process less stressefull if you dont trip on stuff. 2- Start with the bulkier stuff and work the way down. It makes the biggest impact on volume. 3-It is pointless to declutter things that are stored in furniture you gone bring in the next house. 4-Don`t force yourself to be perfect. You gona declutter while unpacking anyway. Gain time. Questions: Have you used that item after the previous moving? Have you used it in a long time? Do I love this item enough to pack, transport, move, pay, umpack and find a new place? Is that item worth the trouble? Are you willing to have it ship or buy insurance? For my move last June, I began packing in February. On moving day, we sat and waited for the movers to arrive, completely ready and relaxed. It was the best move ever and all thanks to being a minimalist and also to not procrastinating. We lived out of some boxes heading up to the move but I knew where everything was and it was definitely worth the minor inconvenience. Stress is a killer!
Love this. I'm an empty nester who downsized to about a third or fourth the space. I thought I did a great job decluttering before move...but way overestimated my new space. That's o.k. Every box I'm unpacking, I'm reevaluating and decluttering more. And after we are settled, I'll go through again.
So late to this party, but I can relate. My 2 kids and I moved from a 3 bedroom house with a 400 sq ft studio in the backyard, plus garage, to a 2 bedroom apartment and oh my lord was there some mass stuff to still get rid of once we moved. Since we moved I have fully decluttered the apartment and if I need to move again it will not be the total chaos moving here was.
18 days to my move & enjoying the motivation from the deadline. I didn't think I have much clutter but have a lot of unfinished projects (craft, clothes to alter, etc etc). I won't move until 6 or 12 months from now but I want to intentionally make time for my projects this year and as you said it - if I don't finish it in this time, there is absolutely no point in moving it to just have it sit in the shelves for another couple of years..

I moved from WI to IL a few years ago and only insisted on moving my bed. I downsized everything else into a couple boxes per room (I lived alone). By decluttering ahead of time, I was able to save the cost of having the movers use a larger truck and paying for extra movers to help. They actually rented one of the smallest U-Haul trucks available and it saved me a ton of money. They are a small company and quite happy with the light load that day lol.
The expression on your face at 12:36 makes me add this to your narrative: the sooner you pare things down to a manageable amount to take with you, the more time you’ll have later to spend with loved ones & make memories before you make your move. And I just love seeing you with your sassy pixie haircut!
I love the idea of downsizing where any future move(s) would be effortless. I'd like to get to a point where I have a mental inventory of just about everything in the house.
Having massively decluttered twice in my life, I am still amazed at how little I actually need to live a normal life. It's the most liberating feeling... and easier to keep a clean place.
My fiance and I are moving at the end of our lease in Sept. I just want to move in a less stressful manner this time so I'm here for motivation. I've already got many boxes packed of current art supplies, décor and sentimental items. My biggest task will be sorting through clothes as I probably have 6+ laundry baskets of just my own clothes My favorite way to decide if I can part with something yet or not is to ask myself "If a natural disaster were to happen, which items would I save first? Would I remember this item if everything got destroyed or lost?" I like to imagine that I've been informed that a tornado is on its way to destroy my home and I have an hour to pack up my important stuff and leave. It might seem dramatic or extreme but its something that sparks emotion so I know if I should keep something or let it go! Simply looking at the item the marie kondo way doesn't do anything for me. I have feelings attached to every item I own!
Yes! Brilliant! Pretend you are moving. 2. Pull up you pants and get going! Your are such an inspiration to me. Thank you for the videos and everything.
I frequently say I need a bigger house, yet I sometimes view the house I live in (925 ft2) as too big. I've concluded I just like a lot of "elbow room," and it hasn't always got to do with how much I own. I pared down extensively on my last move. Being I want to go off-grid, I should design a house specifically for the way I want to live, and that will accommodate my stuff. I don't want "more" stuff, just "nice" stuff. I'm willing to trade. It's like growing up: I'm in a new phase now. At least I recognize that. I think that an important step.
I am not really working meaning earnings money at the moment. I am studying for a test and declutering in my mind getting ready to move into my house that I will probably purchase 2 years from now. I believe that I won't have the time to purge things then. So, to get ready I am purging some stuff now. I am starting extremely early. 🙃 So, I think I have time.
I did this 4 years early when my step daughter became a freshman in hs! We knew when she graduated we wanted to leave the area (we only were there so she could be close to her mom and dad while going through school) and I'm so glad I did - even though in those 4 years I accumulated other things I had way less than I would have in the end.
5:48 I still have a moving box sealed with tape from a move made in 1998. There is some nice stuff in there including a Japanese tea-service from a move made in 1957 and only briefly unpacked for display a few years prior to the move in 1998.
Thank you. This is very helpful. We’re planning a cross country move after 18 years of accumulation of a family of five. We’re now three and downsizing.
I rent my house, so I’m decluttering in anticipation of moving. We want to stay another 5 years when my son graduates from high school. But, you never know! 😀
I'm a weirdo who loves moving, of I don't move at least once every 4 years I feel suffocated. I love how moving forces you to confront the things you've held onto just because you "had the space".
I love watching your videos even when I'm not trying to clean. You're just so positive and sweet that you put me in a great mood to face my day as a sahm. Thank you so much 🤗❤️
Preparing for a big move in a year or more so far I've been getting rid of 2-4 boxes of stuff a month. Not to mention all the things going to recycle or trash. I got rid of 2 cabinets that had been sitting on our porch for years and a broken planter and wheel barrow that husband had been holding onto. I'm having a good go of it but my husband is more reluctant so I have to ask him if he wants to keep stuff.
In one of my moves, I losses my oldest baby clothing. I had packed a diaper pail with very special momentum. Now, I only have pictures. I did save the things from my 2nd child and things happened to those momentum. Yes, I have pictures of those things. I was very sad, their coming home from the hospital outfits/ensembles.
My husband is retiring in a few years and wants for us to become "grey nomads" and travel around (Australia is a bloody big island, could take us a while to get around it!) but I am already decluttering in anticipation. I don't want to pay for storage of anything that I won't use when we finally stop. The game commences!
Looking forward to this video! I have a move sometime in the next year or so and am currently working towards decluttering all the things I don't want to move. 😁
I’m moving in a months time from a 3 bedroom house & my husband, dog & I are moving in with his mother as we are trying to save for a deposit. These tips are really helpful, thank you!
I'm planning on moving into my own place next year but my rented room needs a reality check now. Most days it is just a storage closet of items I purchased for my future home! 😅
Omgoodness.... this woman is brilliant! Just watching this video took so much stress off, already! I got so lucky in choosing this video to watch for my how to. Thank you!!
This is such a nice video. Decluttering can be really tough sometimes. I am about to move to a new place and going to start the process of decluttering very soon. I am so happy I came across your channel. Keep posting more such videos.
Thanks I have a chronic illness and was panicking about what to do with my items. Movers are soooo expensive. I decided I'm going to try to get rid of my book cases. Less to move in 2 weeks when i go. Also going to chuck a lot of clothes.
I’ve always tried to live move ready. Only decisions to be made if I actually move are the big items and using up consumables. I moved quite a bit for work when I was younger and only once did I get caught being behind on my regular decluttering of paperwork and other things. I had to move stuff I would have preferred not to move and doing those move inventories are horrible. Makes you not want to own anything. I’m contemplating a move and downsize in a few years as I retire and I’m getting rid of a lot of things now that I would not want to pay to move or keep in a smaller space.
I am rewatching this video because I have 6 months before my renting contract is up. I have been decluttering for this whole year. Now Christmas is coming I dont want it to rebuild up😅
@5:50 1) Have you used this item since the last time you moved? 2) Do I love this item enough to go through the process of moving it? (The cost, the time, the effort, etc) 3) Are you willing to pay to have this item shipped, itemised or insured? (E.g. overseas move) 4) Does this item fit with the vibe of the new home you are moving to and the lifestyle you want to create? Or is it just a relic of the past? (Do you want it in your future) 5) If this item got lost, broken or damaged in the move how upset would you be? How much will it hurt if you have to say goodbye to it?
The thing I see in college town is the stuff people leave in lobby when they are moving out. Of course I bring those bags to see if there is anything good in it. And my God, there are so many food items that have been expired 2 years prior, dishes that are unclean, furniture that has never been dusted. I wonder how people live mindlessly in their homes and never go through their items
@@HowToGYST True but depends on lobby and how much stuff you leave at one time. My place had a large lobby. However, when furniture items were left, it did get crowded
@@HowToGYST Maintenance threw it out in the dumpster. This happened when during move out season, there was so much stuff left, that it was impossible for others to take it all.
Oh my God! Everything you are saying is so true. After 30 years of marriage, I am now divorced and I am leaving so much behind. It is so very therapeutic to trash so much of this life behind me. Very little I have can go to charity so I am trashing a lot. Thanks for the post. I 90 days to be out. I am on track to be out in 30 days.
Great video and tips! When I started my decluttering journey I told myself what would I consider bringing to a new home? Even though I wasn't moving it helped me put things in perspective!🌻🌼🌷
I had things in boxes that weren't appropriate for my last home, but I'm glad I kept them for my current home. And I'm surprised that you moved the IKEA piece across the sea!
Was it worth moving inexpensive and easily replaceable furniture (IKEA)? I'm curious. We're looking at a cross border move (not over an ocean thank goodness!) We have so much of that kind of stuff and it's nowhere near new to begin with. Could be easily damaged during the move. It doesn't seem wise to pay to move it only to have it get there broken and throw it out anyway. I was wondering how full service moving costs are calculated, weight? volume? value?
Because our move was transatlantic we were paying for a shipping container. It was a flat rate, so we could pack whatever fit in it. Assuming you'll be using a truck, you're probably best putting the priorities in first. If you still have space for the IKEA stuff (and you still want it, of course), take it with you. If not, try recycle.
I think movers charge by the pound. It may be wisest to take only the furniture that is in really good shape, is irreplaceable, and definitely has a place in your new home.
I wondered about this too, specifically IKEA style furniture. I think in most cases it would make more sense to sell it cheap locally before you move (maybe help out someone who can’t afford new) and then replace it in your new location. Damage during the move is pretty likely in most cases (even just moving it from one room to another! lol) and then you have the hassle of dumping it too. And who even knows if it will fit well in your new space. It might be a good chance to get something a bit better quality or buy a fun used piece or just start fresh with new IKEA that fits your new home.
@@olivemaycards Damage during the move is pretty likely in most cases (even just moving it from one room to another! Good point, thank you, i will be moving soon to a new smaller house...makes alot of sence
I have a month and a half going 2states over. Thank you Thank you I felt so stressed out. Don't get me wrong it's a stressful act but you make it obvious how to handle in a way your proud of your self once it's done. Gotta go packing

And about to move after 3 newly adult children moved this year ..I have a 7 year old btw and I'm 48 freaking no idea...so much stuff but we have had to move over n over....Oct 15th last day here...im hoping to have new place 1st and be able to go back n forth. I am putting it off n ADHD for real medicated but still so much harder than anything for me
Please can you enable the speech speed to be made slower, as I can follow everything your saying. Thanks. I am starting to declutter for a move, so the more tips the better.
Watching the van drive away from your home, I wished I could fill it with some of my stuff and just watch it go, not that I’ll be moving with it lol 😂 xx
LOL. OMG. that is exactly what I've been doing is pretending I'm moving as I choose what all to let go of. It is helping a lot. Would I want to bother moving this? NO!!!!! That is my answer most of the time. I still need a lot of those things though so I've kept them....but....yeah....it is helpful to pretend I'm moving as I declutter. To make it even more interesting, I pretend I'm going to move abroad. Of course, if I really were doing that I'd get rid of almost everything and have to buy many things once I got to where I was going as that would cost less than shipping things over, but it also helps me be even more selective. I say, "NO," a lot more often now! 😀😀😀
So i have quite the conundrum... Ive gone through everything once already. We currently live in an itty bitty house and we'll be moving into a much larger house. Its a home we inherited and is going to have to be essentially gutted and remodeled. We don't even have a move date or really an idea of when but i want to declutter as much as possible as early as possible. I dont know how the house is going to be remodeled so I don't necessarily know what im going to need but i dont want to keep everything. I know just because i have the space, i dont need to fill it and i dont plan to. But theres stuff taking up space in our small house that we need until we move. I dont know what to do at this point!!??!
There's no right or wrong place to start but furniture will make a big impact seeing as that's the largest and most awkward to move. Not sure if you've seen it but I have a video dedicated to decluttering before a move that has lots of tips in it. Hopefully you'll find it helpful: ruclips.net/video/-lRavNqSAqE/видео.html And here's another with some more general tips I found helpful last time I moved: ruclips.net/video/OYvGHzkMSHs/видео.html
We were paying for a container so could bring whatever fit in it. Plus, the unit was from a discontinued line so I wasn't sure I'd be able to re-purchase.
Being evicted from my family home after I have lived here 37 years with my parents who have passed away. Council have given me 3 weeks to clear the house and be gone. Getting so stressed packing everything up all by myself. I have not found anywhere to go so it will go into storage unit while I live in my car. Not only that I have a dog and nowhere allows dogs council or private. I have no girlfriend, children, friends or family to help I don't know what's going to happen I could end up homeless all because 2 bedrooms are not used and they want a family here.
Hi, I’m about to Mike from LA to Madrid, I’m looking for moving companies, but I’ve seen on videos about so many scams so I’m worried I won’t choose a correct company, does anyone know about a good compay for international Moving that is trustworthy? Please 🙏!!!
The problem I'm having with packing is that my partner wants to keep everything "in case we need it" but then stresses out that we might not have enough space to pack everything into the cars/trucks 😫
I hate how you showed people packing so fast. It made me dizzy and got on my nerves so I couldn’t pay attention to what you were saying. Slow it down or just show yourself talking in front of the camera

Oh thank you for this! I'm moving in a few months!
Best of luck!
Thank you. This is very helpful. We’re planning a cross country move after 18 years of accumulation of a family of five. We’re now three and downsizing.
Hope the move goes as smoothly as possible. 🤞
I rent my house, so I’m decluttering in anticipation of moving. We want to stay another 5 years when my son graduates from high school. But, you never know! 😀
I’ll check back in 4 more years
I'm a weirdo who loves moving, of I don't move at least once every 4 years I feel suffocated. I love how moving forces you to confront the things you've held onto just because you "had the space".
I love watching your videos even when I'm not trying to clean. You're just so positive and sweet that you put me in a great mood to face my day as a sahm. Thank you so much 🤗❤️
This is one of the biggest compliments I've ever received. Truly, it means so much to me. THANK YOU. 💖
I can't wait as I am starting to pack for a big move right now. :)
This video is perfect timing for me! I’m possibly moving in the next few months so even if I don’t, I’ll feel better about my home!
Win win. 😁
Laura, Thank you for putting together the free printable for us. I really enjoy having a tangible paper to follow.
Cheers
You are so welcome! 😃
Your'e very welcome. Best of luck with the move. 💖
I'm planning on moving into my own place next year but my rented room needs a reality check now. Most days it is just a storage closet of items I purchased for my future home! 😅
Been there! You'll be amazed how much progress you can make if you chip away at it in small bits and pieces.
Omgoodness.... this woman is brilliant! Just watching this video took so much stress off, already! I got so lucky in choosing this video to watch for my how to. Thank you!!
Aw, thanks so much. Glad you enjoyed it.
This is such a nice video. Decluttering can be really tough sometimes. I am about to move to a new place and going to start the process of decluttering very soon. I am so happy I came across your channel. Keep posting more such videos.
Great inspiration i i moving know my husband passed and leaving his stuff behind is emotional but i must grow
I'm so sorry for your loss.
@@HowToGYST thank you 🙏🏼 🤗
Thanks I have a chronic illness and was panicking about what to do with my items. Movers are soooo expensive. I decided I'm going to try to get rid of my book cases. Less to move in 2 weeks when i go. Also going to chuck a lot of clothes.
*nods*. Thank you.... This is good.
Now Christmas is coming I dont want it to rebuild up😅
I am currently trying to declutter, preparing to move. I feel like she made this one for me lol.
Definitely did. 😉 Best of luck with the move!
Thanks for reminding us it doesn't have to be perfect.
Omg your timing on this video is perfect for me.
Question: why did you decide to leave Ireland and how did you choose the Midwest to settle down?
She has actually answered this on her Instagram! I think there's a highlight
@@lowwastehighmelanin I’ve tried to find it to no avail. Oh well…
My husband's company is based here, so it was a career move for him.
I just got rid of four boxes of paper after 7 years of being back home. I moved from Ohio back to Michigan
@5:50
1) Have you used this item since the last time you moved?
2) Do I love this item enough to go through the process of moving it? (The cost, the time, the effort, etc)
3) Are you willing to pay to have this item shipped, itemised or insured? (E.g. overseas move)
4) Does this item fit with the vibe of the new home you are moving to and the lifestyle you want to create? Or is it just a relic of the past? (Do you want it in your future)
5) If this item got lost, broken or damaged in the move how upset would you be? How much will it hurt if you have to say goodbye to it?
really liked the tip to start with the bigger items!
It makes a huge difference!
you are really energetic and humorous and it's very helpful
The thing I see in college town is the stuff people leave in lobby when they are moving out. Of course I bring those bags to see if there is anything good in it. And my God, there are so many food items that have been expired 2 years prior, dishes that are unclean, furniture that has never been dusted. I wonder how people live mindlessly in their homes and never go through their items
I suppose we're all guilty of it to some extent. Leaving everything in a lobby sounds like a hazard though.
@@HowToGYST True but depends on lobby and how much stuff you leave at one time. My place had a large lobby. However, when furniture items were left, it did get crowded
And what happens with the stuff that nobody takes?
@@HowToGYST Maintenance threw it out in the dumpster. This happened when during move out season, there was so much stuff left, that it was impossible for others to take it all.
Oh my God! Everything you are saying is so true. After 30 years of marriage, I am now divorced and I am leaving so much behind. It is so very therapeutic to trash so much of this life behind me. Very little I have can go to charity so I am trashing a lot. Thanks for the post. I 90 days to be out. I am on track to be out in 30 days.
This video is the first one I found today that actually helped me thank you!!!!
Great video and tips! When I started my decluttering journey I told myself what would I consider bringing to a new home? Even though I wasn't moving it helped me put things in perspective!🌻🌼🌷
Very good advice. One of the best I have seen on moving
Thank you!
@@iamjane9628 Our transatlantic movers charged by size of container, and the other company we used for our move afterwards charged by the hour.

Good point, thank you, i will be moving soon to a new smaller house...makes alot of sence
I got rid of so many boxes. before my last move. 7 years later we are moving and I have to just pack this stuff up.
What a huge task you’ve saved yourself! 💃🏼
I have a month and a half going 2states over. Thank you Thank you I felt so stressed out. Don't get me wrong it's a stressful act but you make it obvious how to handle in a way your proud of your self once it's done. Gotta go packing
And you sound like my family I'm American but my dad was from Mayo
Hope your move went well.
Thank you for the inspiration
Great points you made, thanks for sharing. So fitting for this season in my life.
Love channel name! And about to move after 3 newly adult children moved this year ..I have a 7 year old btw and I'm 48 freaking no idea...so much stuff but we have had to move over n over....Oct 15th last day here...im hoping to have new place 1st and be able to go back n forth. I am putting it off n ADHD for real medicated but still so much harder than anything for me
One box at a time. 🙂 Best of luck!
"Pretend Moving"... Loved your video 💖
Please can you enable the speech speed to be made slower, as I can follow everything your saying. Thanks. I am starting to declutter for a move, so the more tips the better.
If one of my items got damage in a move .i wouldn't be too upset. It just gives me a reason to go shopping
Watching the van drive away from your home, I wished I could fill it with some of my stuff and just watch it go, not that I’ll be moving with it lol 😂 xx
ooooo so neeed this caused im overwhelmed
Hang on in there! You'll get there. When's moving day?
What movie is the Frome behind you from?
Very, very helpful!!!
thank you for the printable!
Hello! What was the white dividers you used in your suitcase at 9:30 in this video??
They're Ikea's Skubb boxes.
Wouldn’t a new ikea bookcase have cost less than shipping it across the Atlantic?
Not in this case. We paid for a crate so it was whatever we could fit in there for a flat fee.
@@HowToGYST ah, that makes more sense.
Thank you so much ❣️ it wasn't like other moving tips 😸
We never unpack everything. 😬
LOL. OMG. that is exactly what I've been doing is pretending I'm moving as I choose what all to let go of. 😀😀😀
Yes, it’s amazing how much you can let go when you consider a move.
Hopefully you'll find it helpful: ruclips.net/video/-lRavNqSAqE/видео.html
And here's another with some more general tips I found helpful last time I moved: ruclips.net/video/OYvGHzkMSHs/видео.html
such a great video with awesome ideas! thank you :)
Thanks for watching. 🙂
great tips! Thank you so much!!
i love you, thank you so much!!!!
This was very helpful.
I'm so glad. 😁
Why would you pay to move an IKEA bookshelf across the ocean?
We were paying for a container so could bring whatever fit in it. Plus, the unit was from a discontinued line so I wasn't sure I'd be able to re-purchase.
Hello! Thank you for this video. Just one thing... I can't seem to find the printable
:( Does anyone know how to? Thank you!

The problem I'm having with packing is that my partner wants to keep everything "in case we need it" but then stresses out that we might not have enough space to pack everything into the cars/trucks 😫

Ummmmm maybe not great advice for everyone.. When you're paying $300 AUD per cubic metre, you will want to declutter E.V.E.R.Y.T.H.I.N.G lol
I hate how you showed people packing so fast. It made me dizzy and got on my nerves so I couldn’t pay attention to what you were saying. Slow it down or just show yourself talking in front of the camera
