Ilan Pappé: The Untold Truths of the 1948 Palestinian Nakba

  • In this statement, delivered at the UN Forum on the Question of Palestine in 2017, Ilan Pappé delves into the events of 1948 that led to the Palestinian Catastrophe. He begins by recounting the role of the United Nations, which appointed the United Nations Special Committee on Palestine (UNSCOP) in 1947. This committee, comprising members who were largely unfamiliar with the region, "totally misunderstood either the Palestinian position or the general Arab League position on the Palestine question."
Pappé explains how the Jewish community in Palestine initiated a process of ethnic cleansing in early 1948, even before the end of the British Mandate on May 15. By April, over 150,000 Palestinians had been expelled from urban areas, with the massacre at Deir Yassin on April 9 exemplifying the brutality of these expulsions. By the time Arab nations intervened on May 15, 250,000 Palestinians were already refugees. Pappé highlights the systematic destruction of Palestinian villages, stating that "half of Palestine's population was expelled, half of Palestine's villages were demolished, and most of the Palestinian towns were wiped out."
He concludes by emphasizing the need for acknowledgment, accountability, and acceptance in any peace process. Pappé asserts that the international community must recognize the "catastrophe of 1948" and hold Israel accountable for the ethnic cleansing that occurred. Only through this acknowledgment can there be hope for a just resolution and acceptance of Israel as part of the Middle East. "The Israelis can ask both the Palestinians and the Arab world to accept them as an organic part of Palestine," he states, envisioning a future where past wrongs are addressed and true peace can be achieved.
To mark the anniversary of the 1948 War and subsequent uprooting and mass displacement of Palestinians, known in Arabic as Al-Nakba (the Catastrophe), the Committee convened the UN Forum on the Question of Palestine "70 Years after 1948 - Lessons to Achieve a Sustainable Peace" on 17-18 May 2018.

The origins of the Palestine problem as an international issue, however, lie in events occurring towards the end of the First World War.
These events led to a League of Nations decision to place Palestine under the administration of Great Britain as the Mandatory Power under the Mandates System adopted by the League.
In principle, the Mandate was meant to be in the nature of a transitory phase until Palestine attained the status of a fully independent nation, a status provisionally recognized in the League’s Covenant, but in fact the Mandate’s historical evolution did not result in the emergence of Palestine as an independent nation.
The decision on the Mandate 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐞, 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐭’𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 “𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐛𝐞 𝐚 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲”.

Truth? The Jews were on the defence in the first months of the civil war the Arabs started; Jerusalem e.g. was besieged by arab militias since the start of the hostilities, and they would constantly ambush supply convoys.
"Following the outbreak of disturbances at the end of 1947, the road between Tel Aviv and Jewish Jerusalem became increasingly difficult for Jewish vehicles. Arab forces tried to cut off the road to Jerusalem from the coastal plain, where the majority of the Jewish population resided. The Arabs blocked access to Jerusalem "at Latrun and Bab al-Wad," a narrow valley surrounded by Arab villages on hills on both sides. In December 1947 the Jewish Agency set up the Jerusalem Emergency Committee, headed by Dov Yosef, which stockpiled food and fuel. In January the Committee estimated 4,500 tons a month was needed. In January 1948 the number of trucks supplying Jewish Jerusalem had fallen to thirty per day. By March the daily average number of trucks reaching Jerusalem was six. By the end of March it was clear that food supplies for civilians in Jewish Jerusalem would run out. "
The only reason the Arab states didn't invade sooner, and only had small militia's active during the cil war period, is because the terrtory was still British, and they didn't want to start an international incident by invading British soil.

In 1947, it was a white's man's world. The world was largely the white man's colonies. And the white man stole Palestine and gave it to strangers from alll over the world to populate it. At the time of the Balfour Declaration, Jews formed less than 5% of the population of Palestine.

The zionists made an idol out of Einstein that people bow down to. He had children from a serb gentile female physicist called Mileva who according to many either helped or wrote most of Einstein's works. Not sure I am not spreading gibberish? Look up Olinto Di Pretto for instance... Einstein was working at the swiss patent office when Di Pretto had sent his work to be patented. That's no coincidence. Einstein rarely gave credit for other people's ideas he was using. Read his travel diaries what he thought of other people. He left his gentile wife with his sick son without helping them. That's what I call an sbag. Later he went on to marry his ewish first cousin.

Thank you Mr. Pappe for having the courage,
honesty, integrity and decency, to bring
these critically important facts into the
public sphere! Most of us are kept in the
dark about these facts, and that is
    inexcusable and deplorable! This
information should be known by the
people of the world, so that proper
steps can be taken , to begin to
    compensate the people of
Palestine, for all the suffering, hardships
and death and destruction, they have
been forced to endure, even prior to
1948! The policies of the West that has
    perpetuated this ethnic cleansing and
    now Genocide, are without justification
and violate the tenets of the U.N.
Charter and Nuremberg Codes! It is
    incomprehensible that this nightmare
is still ongoing, and only with active
    support of Israel’s Western backers!
We should al be ashamed of our
    active participation in such an
    endeavor!
Thank you Mr. Pappe and the U.N.,
for bringing this to our attention.
What would lol it take for the governments
of the West to come to their senses
and put an end to this Genocide???

“The Arab armies entered Palestine to protect the Palestinians from the Zionist tyranny but, instead, they abandoned them, forced them to emigrate and to leave their homeland, and threw them into prisons similar to the ghettos in which the Jews used to live.”
    - Palestinian Authority (then) Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen) (Falastin a-Thaura, (March 1976)

On April 3, 1949, the Near East Broadcasting Station ( Cyprus ) said: “It must not be forgotten that the Arab Higher Committee encouraged the refugees’ flight from their homes in Jaffa, Haifa and Jerusalem” (Samuel Katz, Battleground-Fact and Fantasy in Palestine, NY: Bantam Books, 1985, p. 15).

"Indeed the struggle is about ideology, not about facts, Who knows what facts are? We try to convince as many people as we can that our interpretation of the facts is the correct one, and we do it because of ideological reasons, not because we are truth seeekers." IlanPappe Le Soir, Nov. 29, 1999
"IlanPappe, a history lecturer at the University of Haifa, freely admits that, in his view, facts are irrelevant when it comes to the history of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. "Indeed the struggle is about ideology, not about facts, Who knows what facts are? We try to convince as many people as we can that our interpretation of the facts is the correct one, and we do it because of ideological reasons, not because we are truthseekers," Pappe said in an interview with the French newspaper Le Soir, Nov. 29, 1999
"My bias is apparent despite the desire of my peers that I stick to facts and the "truth" when reconstructing past realities. I view any such construction as vain and presumptuous." - IlanPappe (A History of Modern Palestine) p. 11
      -----------------------
IlanPappe is an ex-Israeli, ex-historian. This guy was expelled from his Israeli university post after he was found to be fabricating historical data. Pappe's books have been critiqued by many since his evidence is based on half-truths, falsified facts a and wishful thinking. He makes a living by giving talks to both left-wing groups and Islamic organizations.
