Thank you Norman for dedicating your life to this work. I know you said in a recent video that you became pessimistic about your work and starting thinking that there was no solution to this tragic situation. I am so glad that you found the inspiration and strength to share your expertise on this topic and to advocate for the lives of these long oppressed people. I took a few classes with Professor Norman Finkelstein at DePaul University in Chicago around 2006-2008 and learned a lot about this conflict then. At the time, he was really the only high profile Jewish academic who openly criticized Israel and supported the Palestinians. He lost his teaching career because of his views. A real mensch.

As a Palestinian I grew up experiencing most of this while watching my parents, grandparents, aunts uncles and so forth deal with such unjust experience. Despite all this I don’t remember growing up watching any of my extended family having hatred for Jews (but for Zionism or Israel) From theological perspective I think we Palestinian consider religion is the core essence of our land Palestine

Whenever Finkelstein gives his brief history of the area around 1948, he always misses out the same information. I’ve seen this multiple times, and it’s frustrating once you know how pertinent that information is. Whenever he says there are things “he’s not going to go into”, I began to realise that the majority of the time it was because that information didn’t support a one-sided narrative.
He’ll say the Jewish partition was 56% of the total area, despite the Arabs being a larger population, but will neglect to mention that over half of the Jewish allocation was the Negev desert, which other than sparse migratory tribes of Bedouins, was uninhabited, and considered uninhabitable for permanent settlement.
He’ll also leave out the fact that the majority of of the area was not owned by either the Jews or the Arabs, but by the state. It also wasn’t a country, but a region of the Ottoman Empire, and then the British. It was to be split in the partition so that everyone gained.
To further compound it, he’ll neglect to mention that the proposed Arab state was to be 99% Arab-Palestinian, whereas the Jewish state was only to be 55% Jewish, with the rest of the population comprised of Arabs and Christians.
Indeed, today Israel is only 73% Jewish with the rest being Arabs and minority groups. Why did the Jewish percentage go up? Well, it’s something else Finkelstein doesn’t like to talk about.
He’ll mention how the 1948 war resulted in the displacement of 700k Palestinian Arabs, but he won’t mention the almost 900k Jews who were expelled from Muslims countries where they had lived for thousands of years, longer than the Muslims. Most of those refugees fled to Israel and expanded the Jewish percentage. He won't mention the mass property confiscations they suffered, which included both considerable financial assets and land. Indeed, the land they lost was approximately 60'000 square miles. By contrast, Israel is about 9'000 square miles. That ethnic cleansing resulted in their being less than ten thousand Jews in the Arab world today.
He doesn’t mention that, because one of the sticks to beat Israel with is the notion that they’re European Jews not native to the area who merely emigrated to the area, as that is a way to delegitimise their presence in the area. But when you realise the Israeli Jewish population is comprised of European Jews, Palestinian-Jews who were there all along, and Jews that had lived generally in the middle-east unbroken for thousands of years, that narrative starts to collapse, and so he leaves it out.
He also won’t mention that one of the driving factors for the Palestinian-Arab displacement was several Arab countries coming into the conflict with the intention to eradicate the nascent Israel in an openly declared war of genocide, and they advised the Palestinian-Arabs to vacate the area until the slaughter was complete, at which time they could return. Whilst a lot of Palestinian-Arabs joined the invading Arab armies to destroy Israel, the rest stepped aside and waited for the Jews to be eradicated hoping they could take the land afterwards.
Israel won, and set her borders with agreement from Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan and Syria, whilst Jordan annexed the West Bank and Egypt occupied Gaza.
Then he’ll say the Arabs turned down the partition because they felt it unfair on two points, but that’s not actually fully true. Before stating that as their reason, they made it clear they would accept no scenario which ended with the creation of a Jewish state, no matter how small. They wanted the entire area, and would only suffer the existence of Jews if they were of lesser status, or Dhimmi, which the Jews had been relegated to throughout the Muslim world.
There’s absolutely wrongdoing on both sides as one would expect in a conflict that's been going on for so long, but Finkelstein will only present Israel’s wrongs, whilst downplaying the actions of the other side, and likes to leave out all of the justification for Israel’s actions. I used to see this guy as an authoritative yet unbiased voice on the conflict, but the more I read into it, the more I realised that actually, he was deceiving me. That was before I discovered his pro-terrorist comments, and his comments about the 7th attack by Hamas warming ever fiber of his being.

Whoa! Got off to a terrible (arbitrary) start by describing the population of the area as ... "jews or zionist" and "arabs or palestinians". How about the mention of muslims or backing up in time with a pivotal, brief mention of the Treaty of Sevres or the role of the UN in 1945. How convenient to launch this talk in 1947. The content is not factual and he cherry picks what is conveniently left in or out of this narrative. This conflict is not about land. I repeat, not about land. Finkelstein leap frogs over the crucial issue: the teachings of Islam. The conflict began, around 632AD when regional/middle eastern antisemitism began. The whole point of this religion is the extermination of the Jew. Islam has pushed out "refugee" Jews and Christians in all Muslim countries for centuries and the very notion of an Israel situated within conquered muslim/Ottoman land is intolerable. There is no 2 state solution. Israel tried that experiment in 2005 when it withdrew from Gaza. From that point on, Hamas did nothing but build rockets, excavate tunnels and indoctrinate human shields with the funds gifted them by the UN, with one purpose: extermination of the Jews. Please read more on this subject matter before believing anything contained in these 42 minutes.

"Always siding with the oppressed" otherwise known as "siding with the underdog" is an infantile perspective. And Fink is an infantile and disingenuous charlatan. He hides behind abstract legalism, which does not determine moral right or wrong. He leaves out all actual context. Because if he provided it, he would have no argument.
. These will provide further context. To understand the full context that Fink leaves out. All at YT.

Finkelstein leaves out the awkward facts.
Such as that the Palestinian refugees left Israel in the midst of the Arab attempt to massacre the Jews, which began immediately after the UN passed the partition resolution in November 1947. The Jewish leadership offered to work with Arabs for the betterment of all and the Arabs launched immediate terror attacks and a general strike.
Or the fact that Israel pulled all troops out of Gaza and evicted all Israeli civilians, making it 100% Arab in 2005, and offered to help in any way, and this was answered by a huge increase in rockets fired from Gaza into Israel (almost 1000 in 2006) and constant terrorist attacks, so that Israel and Egypt HAD TO establish a blockade to keep Iranian arms out.
Or that nobody ever talked about a Palestinian nation before the Arab League invented the PLO and the Palestinian People in 1964, as part of the Arab attempt to alter the public perception of the Middle East conflict from many Arab states bullying Israel to Israel bullying the poor Palestinians.
Or the fact that when Israel attempted to negotiate the creation of an Arab ('Palestinian') state in 2000, Arafat responded by launching the second intifada which was a campaign of constant terrorist attacks.
Or the fact that the leaders of the Arabs in the Palestine Mandate Territory were allies of Hitler in World War II.
Or...I could go on and on and on. He just spins half truths and lies geared to arousing emotion and in fact playing on people's preconceived notions and prejudices. And he uses his parents SUPPOSED Holocaust experiences (about which we have only his word) to falsely give himself credibility.

if Jewish people would just be able to listen to you and acknowledge the facts and legal implications! But they are not and possibly never will. Why? I think we could call this false "entitlement" based n the again - false - assumption of inborn superiority going back to being the chosen people of God. With the coming of Christ and the Jews putting him to death, they lost the privilege of being the 'Chosen people. To see this for a traditional Jew living in Israel with all his comforts and rights, is simply impossible and calls for an intervention by the international authorities....

Twenty years after its was voted for and another big war of the surrounding Arab nations against Israel was lost (btw. No word about the Jom Kippur war in his „brief“ review) whereas Israel and in contrafiction of what Finkelstwin is saying, Israel actually accepted on May 1. 1968 the resolution and we’re starting to go into negotiations with each Arab state.

Injustice, perceived or real, inevitably results in conflicts. The prevailing colonizers attitude among Westerners, before and right after the creation of the state of Israel, was that Arabs represented a lesser than humanins, and thus have less rights if at all. The facts then and now should have lead to a totally different outcome, but as always the British knew better and they managed to create this conflict! As long as there is no justice, there will not be peace between the Palestinians and the Israelis.

Why do say indigenous Palestine and Jewish settlers when you state there was two communities in the region? How did you identify the indigenous tribe? Why do you quote UN as the authority on what was legal? Why did you not present the Jewish side, ie their claim to Palestine, when you presented the Arab side? The Arabs lost the Arab-Israeli war so, yes they became refugees. If the Jews lost they would be dead. That's war, why is this unjust? Israel after the Arab-Israel war had no obligation to abide by UN resolution. Why do you state UN as absolute authority? Israel won the rights to Palestine by warfare like every other F-ing country. The Arabs should've negotiated but they warred instead.

a lot of people came to this place where they had no ancestry before, whereas the other group of people were there before (and to boot, have a demonstrated genetic connection with whatever ancient population was present that people like to bring up to say that israelis are indigenous). i think it’s very simple in that sense to talk about indigeneity.

Professor, it's a bit misleading. It's the Brits and their bankers who created the "conflict". The Palestinians awoke one day to the realization that they were indeed being systematically displaced, and they vigorously opposed their own extinction, as anyone would faced with that aim by newcomers moving in.
