As prime-time's # 1 half-hour variety show for five years, The Ford Show featured all the ingredients of the top variety shows of the day; Hollywood's greatest guest stars, top-of-the-line production, and terrific music. But one simple element separated it from all others...Ernie closed virtually every show with a hymn, a spiritual or a song of faith. For the time, it was a bold and powerful statement for a popular entertainer of Ford's stature to be making on live television, especially in the face of the initial objections from Madison Avenue and the network. But it was a statement that would become the trademark of his career, and in many ways, the mark of his life. There are actually people who think that this was TEF's real singing voice. When he sang seriously his bass-baritone was one of the best ever and that includes operatic singers.
One song where his bass voice shines is in the song Shenondoah
For example, His Gospel & Hymn albums.
He reminds me of Jim Nabors who played Gomer Pyle. Jim Nabors had a beautiful singing voice as well, but many people remember him for his Gomer Pyle voice.

June and Ernie grew up less than a dozen miles from each other, near Bristol, Virginia. He was ten years older, and she probably heard him on KNOX radio from Knoxville, TN, when he first started out.
And to think, this was MANY YEARS before Hee Haw (the TV show.) THAT's entertainment.
June Carter was a Great Lady.

You're misinterpreting what I said. I didn't mean that it wasn't Tennessee Ernie who was singing here. I meant that he wasn't using his "normal" singing voice. It certainly isn't the way he was encouraged to sing at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. He's hamming it up here which is fine; however some people, especially younger ones he may have only seen him on I Love Lucy reruns, don't realize what a superb serious singer he could be.
He's awesome. He's got a beautiful voice & this definitely wasn't his normal, but neat to see or hear.
