So why shouldn't they keep some of that brighter aesthetics even when painting them in a grim dark style. I would love to see one or two Blood Angels in this style in a grim dark painted diorama with some imperial guards. I guess it would look pretty unnatural, but not unrealistic and therefore totally catch the Blood Angels aesthetic concept. Like a beacon of hope, but without exaggerating it and without forgetting the dark setting.

It depends on the situation but most of the time I do not tend to use varnishes when using Oils. As long as you give your acrylics time to properly cure (not just touch dry) the White spirit won't hurt them 👍

Very beautiful miniature and very grim dark. Not my style as I like more "cartoonish" paint style which I paint my own Blood Angels miniatures. They are more orange than red and the recesses are painted with Nuln Oil. The other parts of the armour are done with dry brushing leaving the shadowy parts completely black. You have really vast painting skills, so I as wondering that could you do a different style for painting Blood Angels? More like the "cartoonish" style of the 2000s mixed with more epmhasis on shadow and light. Not like the fully comic book cartoon style and not like the old 1990s and 2000s models either, but a mix of both.
Call me heretic but wouldn't bathing the whole mini in nuln oil pretty much give a very similar effect ? Tones down hilights, mutes the colors and turns everything down a notch. I swear my blood marines armor looks the same after a base coat of Mephiston and a full wash of Nuln before i put in the highlights. Also: Do you varnish after all of this or are the enamels enough to seal the paintjob? If varnish, Matte ?
Bathing in Nuln will give a similar effect but you will also likely get water marks and it will provide the same effect on everything as opposed to you being able to remove it from areas that you don't want the effect like you can with Oil/Enamels. It is a similar effect but the Oil based paints give you much more control and leave a better finish at the end. I always use a matte or satin varnish (depending on the look I want) at the end of a paint job as generally my minis get a decent amount of use on the tabletop and it helps to seal in the pigments.
Lovely job! Just wondering, do you let either the oil wash or the streaking grime dry before you take it off with the white spirit q-tip? Or do you do it immediately after you apply it?
It depends a little on the effect that I am going for but yes generally I'll leave them to dry for a period of time. For the enamels like the streaking grime this will normally be about 20 minutes or so. Normally until it is dry to the eye. With Oils they dry a lot slower so will often be left a little while longer.
