      The thing I really like about nick is he revisits techniques he’s previously done and tries to up his game, he’s constantly learning and experimenting and showing that to his audience. Really interesting channel. End of the day, nothing is gospel because all tracks need different treatment, techniques evolve and he at least acknowledges when he may have done something that may not have been the most optimal at that time. Good channel anyway

      @chriswhite7636 completely agree I may have cut it. But I talked about how I use soft clip earlier in the chain, and was sure I’d also seen Nic do that previously too. But with the video already being an hour plus I did end up cutting lots.

    I watched a video of Colt Caperune yesterday and he said it took him 6 years before actually offering mastering to his clients. Mastering is a total different mindset than mixing and Colt let his clients blind listen to his masters and the one from his mastering engineer. When 90% of his clients picked him he decided to offer his mastering services to clients. I think he right with that approach, you need a great room and above average monitoring and a lot of practice to get good at it. If you want to learn mastering the right way then you need to put in a lot of hours to rightfully call yourself a mastering engineer. Nicolas is a great mastering engineer imo and he does a lot of RUclips video’s and I think he’s definitely legit, he always says that if he’s wrong about something to let him know and he will set it right. I don’t master anything myself but I like both mentioned engineers a lot and love seeing their approach and mindset.

    • @Unders
      @Unders  29 дней назад +1

      I don’t know if you watched the video, but I specifically said I don’t consider myself a mastering engineer. But I have a fair amount of experience.

      @@Unders I was not talking about you but was talking in general. I liked that you said that you don’t consider yourself a mastering engineer. I just wanted to point out that mastering is not something that is done easily that’s all.

    • @Unders

      @@Studio22mix Fair and I agree, Wasn't sure if you skipped using the chapters (many do)
      This is why its not something i offer, I do it for friends who like my approach and I master my own work an releases, an it stops there really. Going back to my older video i explained the reason i took this approach was that my engineer i used for years retired. An basically i couldn't find anyone else who fit the affordability and wasn't shit. Im blessed to be friends with an have been taught by Mike Cave who has more plats than i can recall, Lewis Capaldi being a recent one i remember. But i can't justify his prices 😆 Which i feel is also MANY MANY of us who create. Hence videos like this I felt are both fun for us and hopefully helpful too.

    • @Studio22mix
      @Studio22mix 29 дней назад +1

      @@Unders I really liked the video, maybe only the ‘exposed’ title was more of a click bait but that’s RUclips these days I guess. I just do mixing as an out of proportion grown hobby because I love doing it. Many people underestimate both mixing and mastering. I especially don’t master my own mixes because of song fatigue which kicks in much faster than most people think. I like to mix fast, throw them on my phone and listen back as a listener not as an engineer then if really necessary I fix some things. A great mix doesn’t have to be a perfect balanced or perfect sounding mix in my opinion. For me most important is the way it makes me feel about a song or album. There are so many different ways and techniques available and so much to learn, it’s a fun ride. It took me some time to get my mixes translate well on different systems but now that they do I enjoy it even more.
      Great video, it got me subscribed 👍🏼

    • @Unders
      @Unders  29 дней назад +2

      it is indeed the way of youtube. I hate it, an annoying this is the best perfoming video in a couple months. I miss just being able to make a good helpful video and it being shown to subscribers 🤷‍♂️
      song fatigue is absolutely a thing, I give my tracks weeks maybe months before i come back round to them. To hopefully achieve objectivity. its also a reason why i adopt a print to audio kind of workflow that means forward is the only option without extreme hassle.

    • @Unders
      @Unders  7 дней назад +2

      Are you so immature and IK multimedia ONE, both very good if you need to add a little bit at the Mastering stage and do a very good job at avoiding phasing. You can test this with a sum to mono in utility afterwards but for sure if the track doesn’t benefit from it, don’t do it.

  • @YoungLitHippy
    @YoungLitHippy 28 дней назад +2

    I think the low end sounds more solid on streakys version. Nic’s is good too but sounds a tad thinner.

    • @YoungLitHippy
      @YoungLitHippy 28 дней назад +1

      But listening more Streakys slightly distorts during certain parts. I think somewhere between Nic’s more dynamic and Streakys more compressed is perfect for your song.

    • @Unders
      @Unders  28 дней назад +2

      I can agree with that I feel it’s the use of the multiband compression option which is something I would often reach for but wasn’t present in the other tutorials.

    • @Unders
      @Unders  28 дней назад +2

      @YoungLitHippy the thing with the distortion is having to blindly copy limiter soft clipping settings and then push to a certain level. Whereas with Nick we correctly gain staged at every portion so that would not be an issue.

  • @ntsakomaluleke6333

    • @Unders

      Giving the use of multiband compression certainly allowed for that. his is also deceptively loud though as it basically said make it -8RMS, However if it does the job then winner.

    Friend Question:
    I want to give it that touch that only analogue gives and send my finalized digital mix from the daw to one of these devices: (Compressor/Limiter or Tube Preamp, both 2 channels) and return it to the daw:
    What do you recommend me? 1. Send my mix to an analog limiter or 2: Send it to a tube preamp and finish limiting it digitally.
    I have little budget and space to buy just 1 piece of equipment; I already have a harmonic exciter.

    • @Unders
      @Unders  28 дней назад +2

      I personally wouldn’t and don’t I bounce everything and use the colour tax system in Mac to organise. Nick explains in his video he uses it for an organisational reason and it keeps everything contained in one session. I don’t know for other DAW but I covered many years ago the different ways of bouncing in logic and how they all also sound different which would be a concern to me.

    I will say, the only reason you need at least a db before you can register is due to your monitoring. Go and demo some mastering grade monitors, something like the PDP MUM 8's or ATC SCM series or something, and you will hear 0.3db boosts.
    I don't believe the OP can hear that .3 db boost in his headphones tho, he is capping

    • @Unders
      @Unders  Месяц назад +5

      that the human ear cannot discern amplitude shift below 0.3dB an in that example, I could hear no discernible benefit. I like that you mentioned the MUM monitors I was there at the launch. Got to try some of my mixes on them even.
      Im way too out the loop to know WTF you mean by capping.
