Sea King Helicopter with Apollo capsule. Restoration of Dinky model number 724.

  • The Dinky model debuted in 1971. The helicopter was very technologically advanced and continued the series of aircraft models. I bought my copy at a flea market. The previous owner tried to repaint it Blackhawk, but it didn't work out. The model has a battery-powered electric motor that moves the propeller. This engine didn't work for me. In this video I show you how to repair a broken engine. I also made the missing polyurethane resin wheels and the rear propeller blade. A big challenge was to recreate the packaging together with the display. Thank you for watching the video, I publish car repair videos on Tuesdays and Saturdays. You can turn on subtitles in your language with commentary on the activity in the video.

    Impressive restauration of helicopter and box. I remember this in the Dinky catalogue and wanting it as a kid, but I never got it. The Apollo Capsule is a reminder of a bygone era, when the space race was on.

    • @PaulRestorer
      @PaulRestorer  3 месяца назад +2

      Thank you very much, Martyn. I'm very glad I could help you in this way. 90% of cases when these motors do not work are due to the lack of current flow, usually between the brushes and the housing. If, of course, there is no conduction between the rotor turns, then the problem is more serious because one of the circuits must be burned. It seems to me that this situation can only occur when someone connects too high a voltage to this engine. Good luck with the fix Paul

    Sea King helicopters continued to be used by the Canadian Navy untill well into the 1990s. These planes were older than most of their crews! Eventually it became impossible to obtain replacement parts and so they were finally retired.

    The paint job on the Sea King helicopter is wrong. In the 1970s seeking helicopters of the US Navy were painted white on top with a gull grey bottom. Not blue for historical accuracy. The propeller blades were black with yellow tips not light blue, and the hub on top of the blades was yellow with black squares between the blades so it showed when it was turning. The tail rotors were black, with red tips, and a center white line. There were also the standard stars and bars on the sides of the fuselage on both sides of the body near the tail strut, and underneath the main fuselage. With white and black numbers on both sides of the midships fuselage, with a small American flag painted across from them. This was latter removed. and Navy painted in black on both sides of the fuselage tail strut. Which is accurate for a U.S. Navy Sea King in the 1970's. If the toy company painted it in the blue and white they had it totally wrong. As for the capsule. It was not yellow, only the inflatable floats were yellow. The capsule itself was silver with black lettering spelling NASA on it.

    Maestro! Fixing a fiddly winch is one thing. But fixing a fussy electric motor? Do you do work on toasters? Insuring the continuity on the armatures and soldering in a fail safe copper wire were brilliant touches. Getting it all to work AND fit back in perfectly is why you ARE the Maestro! Beautiful paint job, decals, and especially the hard work to source, scale, and execute the perfect box to hold and display the set!! ❤❤❤ Best, Stephen!

    It never ceases to amaze me how these fairly expensive toys for the day were brutalized by the children who owned them. I had a few and still own them but I will admit that it's been a good way to add them to my collection, buy cheap and damaged and then repair them with help from the very large spare part market that is alive and well.
    I also have pulled these small motors apart and carefully cleaned and coaxed them back to life. A very cool little DC 2 pole motor with just one magnet giving them the flick start capability and this is why you will only get continuity on and off as the motor spins since it basically turns on and then off at each revolution. The main problem points are the commutator faces and the wire brushes, they tend to gather a surface film of fine corrosion that is just enough to create an open circuit. It's a pity they are almost impossible to get hold of as I need one for my Dinky Toys A6M5 Zero.

    The recovery helicopter looks great. I feel that the capsule should have some black paint on it, especially the bottom of the capsule.
