I’m doing exactly what you’re doing and I get that error too. When I close out the error message though I don’t see the receipt like you do. It says my cart is empty. But in my orders on the admin page I see the orders. I contacted Shopify about it and it works for them but not me. Any ideas?
If it works for Shopify and not you it may be a browser issue, some things to try - complete the process in incognito mode, make sure your browser is up to date, try another browser from the one you are using. These may not work but I have run into issues similar and this has resolved it.
After you add to cart you will need to "checkout", otherwise it will allow you to continue shopping and adding items to cart. You can checkout at anytime, just click the cart/bag icon at anytime.
