It’s an amazing instrument. I own this trombone, I’ve been playing it for over 4 yrs. Rented it new until I bought it. Plays really close to intermediate or professional!
Has full mellow sound, especially for a small bore. Has a rich tenor sound. Thee bell section makes the difference. Would recommend it especially for the price. I use a Bach 9 mouthpiece. Cheers!
Dad and 13 year old newbies here, just renting after seeing your video review. Excited to receive it in a few days. First month rental just $12. If it goes well, we’d likely buy it at 50% off. Thank you.
Just got it, played it, and you're right. My wife and I are both experienced trombone players and when she was in the other room, she said that she thought I was playing my Bach 36. Not too bad, huh ? This is far better than any student instrument I've ever played.
Hey Paul, I visited the NAMM show 2022. I went straight to the BAC booth. BAC has made a simple DAMN GREAT playing trombone. Thank you for your video, I now know of what you speak. I still pinch myself to see if I am dreaming.
I've been playing on a cheap Bach Aristocrat student horn for 6 years and it's lasted me good, but truth is it's very hard to play in the upper end. I'm about to senior in high school and all my friends are telling me there are serious issues with this horn. I'm really excited to rent this horn and see how it compares!
I love your tone, not a lot of people have that. I adopted similar playing tone from a young age. I had a professional world class trombonist tutor teach me that omboucher and playing style!
Paul, I'm happy to 'like' and 'comment', been a subscriber for a long time. I wish my comments carried more weight with RUclips. Your Bone Masters series is a national treasure! To have all the fantastic artists interviewed by the same 'correspondent', to hear AND see them all playing with you, brings a continuity that is unmatched (possible exception would be Marian McPartland, but dude, that's some pretty good company if so). Cheers mate. Keep up the good work!
Great video from an ex-77 yr old trombone player. So sorry I gave it up after H.S. !! I put my all into it and gave up a chance to play professionally!! One would think my rear would be bruised from all the kicks I wanted to give it!! I still wonder what my life would’ve been like.
Almost 60 years ago, a young upstart brass instrument manufacturer asked my then teacher (a top LA session player in the 60's and 70's) to endorse their horns. At the time, the company had no profile in North America what so ever, and contracted their sales with independent retailers (in our case it was an instrument repair shop) rather than music stores who were committed to Bach, Conn, King, etc... He played them all and ultimately chose one. They said, 'But...that's our student model'. He said, 'Cool!". They tried to get him interested in their pro level horns but they were overbuilt, heavy and unresponsive, and he didn't like them. He said the only one that approached his Williams Model 6 was their student model. Ultimately they never came to terms. My teacher ended up staying with his Williams, but I don't know what became of Yamaha!
I ran into this video a while ago and didn't put much thought behind it, but the more I've gotten to playing again, I've realized the horn I have doesn't fit the band I'm in. I have an old Blessing B-78 and play in a 27 peice Jazz/Dance band. My current horn is just a bit too mellow for the sound we are looking for and this seems like a great horn to get until I can get the horn I'm after (King 3BS). So, while this video is a bit old, just wanted you to know that it's still helping people. Thanks.
Paul, quick question: I've been primarily a classical player, and just picked up a large bore Shires. I'm going to be a freshman in college next year as a performance major and I'm wondering if this would be a good horn for me to use in jazz, which as of now I have very limited experience in. So basically, I'm wondering if this horn would keep up at a college level, and if so how well?
It would have been great if I had known this 2 weeks ago before I rented a horn locally. I had to take it back because it was "stuffy sounding". I now am having an older horn renovated so if it turns out it isn't good enough for me, I will turn to this deal. ;)
When all horns were made in places like Elkhart, Indiana, manufacturers had easier access to high-quality materials, and most student model horns were much better than most student models you see today. There is a night and day difference in blow and tone produciton between my Olds horn from Elkhart and new student trombones of my friends that I have tried.
Played trombone as a kid from 4-7 grade but dropped it when I heard Rosolino and Bill Pearce. But thinking of picking it up again for my own amusement. This may be a good horn at a reasonable price for that.
Very nice introduction to the topic. It is so fatal that buyers often have false expectations of the first or second trombone. Every professional can cope with all trombones, no matter whether recently from P-bone plastic or high-end German-Austrian manufacturing style, worth a used Mercedes. Those who do not practice extensively and thus - by the way - learn Trombone, hardly needs an instrument over 500 dollars, more from China from the supermarket. Sufficient. With us in Germany, the music schools in big cities buy the instruments at the local wholesaler and the shops repair you during the holidays. Most Yamaha, because the German instruments (Lesch or Kühnel) are too costly, because most students carelessly deal with it as with their school bags. In the country, the instruments are inherited - because here, at least in Bavaria or in the neighboring Austria or Switzerland, there is always a wind instrument for generations in the family. There are villages with 700 inhabitants, 500 of which are latent in the local orchestra. The mouthpiece is more crucial here. Dennis Wick from London is my favorite for tenor. Bach for bass trombones. Personally, I grew up with KING trombones, which was also in the jazz and big band genres. When I was 16 (1973) I had a used 350 DM (today 500 Euro) cheap KING 3B from 1963 as a student at a German conservatory. Which demanded everything from a beginner, because my father also played and wanted to participate - as a pro in the orchestra of German broadcasting. Thus, I - this brand - remained faithful, especially since I call the remaining inherited KINGS since the early 70s, in maintainable condition - my own. So every one - used queen - if cheaply acquired, would restore. Also for committed beginners. From nothing, comes nothing. Do not hold off - Warmduscher - instruments. The point of contact of the sound is - the KING - immediately behind the mouthpiece. Where, in purely concertante classical instruments, the sound responds only at the level of the second turn on the funnel. Either the sound is right there, or ....... then IF IF YES, the room is cleared empty, even without a microphone, when Big Band is announced. So -nix with it in-shit - in the untrained score when you acquire a KING. In this respect, beginner instruments - of whatever origin and self-confessed brand loyalty - are to be selected by the teacher, just as the lip texture of the student (soft or harder) is far more important and thus selects the mouthpiece accordingly. I personally, call 60 mouthpieces - (since 1940) of my worthy ancestors - my own and gladly give you free or gifted to beginners to test for strong-willed youngsters who are serious about this instrument. Thus - the right trombone - is sometimes marginal. The community of musicians and the repertoire counts more. Greetings from Germany / Bavaria / Franconia / Nuremberg
Where are the BAC Apprentice line trombones made? Can you tell us more about BAC and your experience with them? I'm a middle school band director and I'd like to be able to offer as much information to my students/parents as possible. Thank you for this opportunity and another wonderful video!
The custom horns are made and spun in the US. For the student model, they have a factory overseas in China for the brass to keep cost down for students and they prep the slides in Kansas City and over look each horn for quality control. As you may know BAC is very picky on how smooth they make their slides.
Great video information for people interested in getting a good, inexpensive (relatively) trombone. Thanks for making the effort for this particular video.......you may guess I am a trombone educator......University of Alaska......Go SeaWolfs!
for my birthday last year I got an Eastar ETB-330 beginner trombone, I only tried 1 other trombone but it was a beat up school instrument so we just don't talk about that... (it was my 1st time even blowing into a trombone, I had a year of previous experience on trumpet so I had an idea of what I was doing) and personally, I like my trombone, I got it for $120 on amazon ($150 when I checked recently) and I think it would be a good trombone for anyone looking for something cheap but decent quality
I believe "student models" are made sturdy and strong because of the battering they get from youngsters. They can be fine instruments. Probly just without the tone quality of prof models.
the Artist models blow a little larger if that makes sense. I enjoy the small bore .500 size and smaller and I personally find I enjoy playing the student model in this video more than my artist model. All good though, just preference!
Paul, I like your approach to Trombone. I just inherited a King 606 and it has some damage on the end near the spit valve. How do I go about getting it repaired? Should I be ready to take out a loan for the repair? Is it worth getting repaired? I am a biginner.
Yes you can do that. Just keep in mind the earlier that you decide to pay the discounted balance off, the better deal you will get. Or you can just keep paying $35 a month until its paid off
I wish it was not a secret on how much the 1/2 off is. I clicked on the link and clicked on rent now ???? I do not want to proceed to checkout to find info. Why is this so hard?? Why can not we talk about the price???
No secret, rent the first month and then you can buy on the second month. This is exactly from the site at checkout: You can acquire ownership through the early purchase option by paying 50% of the remaining rent at any time. Your Early Purchase price after payment of the first month's rent would be $612.50
I bought this trombone and it started tarnishing within a day. Any lubricant I put on the slide feels great for about 30 minutes, but then it dries on and feels like sandpaper to move afterwards.
You have to contact the company you got it from and let them know. I’ve had mine for 3 years now and haven’t had a problem. Please let them know and they will help you out

How do I tell what model trombone I have ? I have a king trombone that I play at my school that rents it from a music store
It’s an amazing instrument. I own this trombone, I’ve been playing it for over 4 yrs. Rented it new until I bought it. Plays really close to intermediate or professional!
Your tone and technique are impeccable
Couple more things I forgot to say. Comes with case and can return at anytime.
Just ordered one. Am excited
w0esf how is it?

Amazing! Thanks for sharing, Pinning your comment to the top so everyone else can benefit from your testimonial
And I was stuck with a crappy Holton as my first horn...

Huge peaceful high-five for a great student model. I have complete confidence in your endorsement and will check this out on my own.
any chance you can ship it to Australia?

I only had a straight trombone for a year, too attached to my f attachment one now to ever go back now. XD

Yes it will keep up and be great for jazz. I think you will be happy but you are always free to return it after you try.
But wait . . . THERE'S MORE! Order in the next fifteen minutes, 'cause we can't do this all day, and you'll receive the Miracle Mix slide oil - FREE!
Ha-Ha.
I put some Slide O Mix Light on the slide. Wow ! That really did the trick.
Thank you for sharing your expertise. Much Appreciated.
wow! Thanks Paul, I just ordered one. I can't believe I can get that for $35 and free shipping
looking forward to trying this out!
i just bought one, cant wait to get it!

This is great. I've been looking for a new horn.

Does this also apply to people living outside the US ?
Paul is such a great player he can make any trombone sound super...that said I might purchase the BAC student horn....thx, Paul.
Hey PTT...have you played a Argenta trombone?
Great buddy
I ordered one.
How is it, is it clean and smooth?
Would this be for a more of a school band, or jazz??
It's how you play it man!
School Jazz band
Is the shipping worldwide?
I love this trombone!! I got this one and also got the attachment version
Ya I have the attachment one too, played it this morning
Paul, do you think this is better than the yamaha stundent models?
Yes ands it is about half the price
I believe "student models" are made sturdy and strong because of the battering they get from youngsters. They can be fine instruments. Probly just without the tone quality of prof models.
Paul gets a gorgeous tone on this one, obviously!
What is the actual brand/model
I want one but can’t get in uk☹️ how would you compare this to a Bach student one?
I bought one how long does it take to ship out?
How do you think this trombone would compare to one in the BAC artist series?
the Artist models blow a little larger if that makes sense. I enjoy the small bore .500 size and smaller and I personally find I enjoy playing the student model in this video more than my artist model. All good though, just preference!
Paul did you get a new one or a used one? Do the used horns come with the slides set-up?
Horn will either come new or like new with slide set-up
Thanx Paul, sounds exciting!
What is the weight of the instrument? I can't find it anywhere... Thanks!
Is this the etude etb 100
Does "student model" mean the slide is narrower/shorter?? I'm looking to learn trombone, but the one i looked at seemed really small to me.
hi paul. what's the brand of this trombone?
Hey Paul! What's the bore on this horn? I am totally interested in trying this out.
.500 bore
Paul, I like your approach to Trombone. I just inherited a King 606 and it has some damage on the end near the spit valve. How do I go about getting it repaired? Should I be ready to take out a loan for the repair? Is it worth getting repaired? I am a biginner.
Repair shouldn't be too expensive. Probably around $60-$100 well worth it for a King 606
Couldnt find
Dude ur badass
Do you play on small bore trombone or large bore trombone?
@paul how to get one in italy?
Hey Paul, is it possible to put the F attachment on this particular horn for an extra price?
yes! email me at info@paulthetrombonist.com and Ill get you taken care of
Paul, so if i choose to buy it, am I able to pay for it each month until the last payment?
Yes you can do that. Just keep in mind the earlier that you decide to pay the discounted balance off, the better deal you will get. Or you can just keep paying $35 a month until its paid off
Paul The Trombonist - Trombone and Music Producer Thank you so much
Paul, will it be set-up for playing when delivered? (Like the slide man)
gotta ask my parents but I want one and am in need of a good instrument
I wish it was not a secret on how much the 1/2 off is. I clicked on the link and clicked on rent now ???? I do not want to proceed to checkout to find info. Why is this so hard?? Why can not we talk about the price???

Very fast reply. Means a lot. You are kinder than I deserve.
You normally can go to "checkout" without purchasing anything. You must make a final click on a "complete order" or a similar button.
Word. large bore?

My name is Paul too
Hi Paul, will this be easy for an absolutely 10 year old beginner to learn?
seems like a good deal
Great sounding horn. Btw what mic are you using ?
This mic is a Neumann u87

I.M.O. it's more the quality of the trombone player than the instrument.
5 years of inflation brought that price up a good bit
