Our low brass clinician always says "if you can play a high e, you can play a high f. If you can play a high f, you can play a high g" and we all like "bro?"
I would agree. Once I learned got comfortable with E, I became comfortable with F. After that, G wasn't that far away. I would say whenever I had to go up partials is when I started having a harder time reaching.
My goal as a trombone player was to have a tone quality that sounded just as good as yours. The other day someone told me If I knew about Christopher bill because I sounded like him. I have never felt so happy lol
+Brian Hernandez Awesome! If you wanna hear some crazy Gods of tone check out Ian Bousfield, Joe Alessi, Marshall Gilkes, and maybe some of the old Bill Watrous records. They put me to shame!
You have the cleanest, neatest and most organized practice room I've seen on RUclips. You teach and explain the concept very well. Furthermore: you're a great trombonist. Thanks for sharing.
I've got a student in our marching/concert band who came to us last year with almost no range above maybe D or Eb (on the staff). I finally got a chance to work with him during drumline camp this week (we invited horns to get extra practice in before full band camp next week) and got him up to an F. Then remembered seeing this video ages ago and applied that technique (had him get comfortable with F in 1st, then with F in 6th etc etc) and got him up to Bb for the first time ever!
A lot of these points apply to playing altissimo notes on a saxophone as well. Obviously, you can't move a slide, but the way I learned them at first was by going up the chromatic scale to get to a G above the staff (ledger lines included), for example. Once I understood that feeling of the altissimo G, I was able to hit it consistently without having to hit slightly lower pitches first.
I subscribed to you because of how much this video helped me within only my first five minutes of practicing. I can already almost hit high B flat comfortably :)
Christopher: Tries to play b flat 5th pos in tune. fails. tries again gets it. Me: Tries to play b flat 5th pos in tune. fails for the 5th time. puts trombone away for the day and starts playing guitar.
Don’t know if this will help, but my voice teacher suggests thinking of higher notes as being off to the side, rather than up. So you stretch towards the right (if you imagine sitting at a keyboard) rather than upwards. It can keep your mind from thinking ‘I have to strain to reach those notes.’
I am on year 3 playing trombone, attempting All-State. If I ever feel low about my playing skills, I just listen to his playing. It really does help and shows how a proper trombone player should play.
This is the best advice I received on range so far. People talk about putting your jaw like this or like that, but never this simple approach. Thanks Bill!
Thanks for this video! I am getting back into playing after 40 years. I was fortunate to grow up in a town that had and still has a great music program. I had an excellent (private Lesson) teacher. This video is helping me get back into it iand s helping me establish my goals.you are really good!.
I’ve been playing trombone for years (6 years) and my range is quite awkward. Bb 3 octave scale would challenge me for hours on the last 3 notes on the 3rd octave. Never had a beautiful successful run of such high notes. However I’ll keep watching videos and practice, don’t give up all!
I love this video. I used to do this for fun but now I notice that it did help me all those years ago. I'll have to add something like this in a warm up.
Thank you!! I'm a sophomore in highscholl and recently I've been shooting for high range and I didn't know exactly how. I think this will really help me so i really appreciate it!!
Always remember to add low range as you add high range. High range might be more flashy and interesting, but a good sounding low range is also important. I wish I could have told myself this three years ago...
I was having trouble playing up to double high D and a double low D, especially the low D, even though I play bass trombone. It's more for fun and not very practical
Great concept expanding the range with the comfortable range as starting point! May sound self explanatory, but is an often overlooked method! Thanks for a great video!
When you started talking about notes you can 'sometimes' play and 'good days,' I realized that my problems are normal! Thanks! Hopefully I can expand my range now.
Very helpful. I've been doing a million range excercises, doing all sorts of tips and tricks for years now, and my improvement has been painfully slow I can't get above a high g comfortably, and this has helped me with the entail aspect of it, I think that's last step
For me, after having a problem with the high register, a great teacher had me set my embouchure on middle Bb, and comfortably slur down to low Bb, up to high. Once that was easy without any change he had me expand my range with Bb always being a pivot point. It sorted out my high range without sacrificing low or sound. That teacher was Chris Mowat, ex principal trombone of the BBC Symphony Orchestra.
I wanna thank you Christopher Bill for your tips. I've been struggling to play high G (7th harmonic) and above without taking my lips off the horn for years. I've been applying your trick for about 2 weeks and I can now play very comfortably and without changing my embouchure up to high G,Ab,A and Im getting there to the B flat. Plus the tone quality is improving for this register, and the notes are less shaky.
Even after playing trombone for six and a half years, I found this video very helpful in every way there is. I've been able to get up to a high Eb with little to no problems.
Any advice for embouchure. I am able to play high range, but I feel like there is way to much tension in the mouthpiece when i play them. Almost feels as though i am pushing too hard into the mouthpiece
+Badtothetrombone If your mid-range is effortless, then the advice in this video will help a lot! Just focus on extending your "effortless range" rather than your "playable range"
When he was like "let's say your a beginner, and you can only play concert F" I was like... I've been playing for about 6 months... And I still can't play concert F...
What amazes me the most is your endurance dude. I just keep re-watching some of your videos, where you are playing pretty long lines, and can't seem to wonder how can you play those in what looks like one breath ?(Duel of Fates bass trombone part especially) Is there some trick or is it just many hours of work put into endurance and control of breath ?
Hey Christopher Bill! I just wanted to tell you that I resolved my problems with extending my range and controlling my breathing. I went with a smaller mouthpiece (3g) and a smaller throat... gained good control. Now your exercises are really working for me.
alex wilson i mean more than tenor and alto. Those are different but they arnt to abstract. But I do have a little trouble transposing on the spot. Such as reading French horn music
I am a trombone player and I've played for 7 years. I think that I've been using too much pressure to force out high notes and it hurts my lips after playing them for a few minutes. Do you have any advice on how to play without hurting your lips? You seem to be able to play very high notes for extended periods of time. I've heard that you shouldn't play with pressure from the mouth piece, and after trying, I've lost almost an entire octave. Please help me out.
Make sure the mouthpiece isn’t pressing on your upper lip, this could lead to damage. Let your lower jaw and lower lip come out slightly and this will greatly protect the upper lip. Squeeze both upper and lower lips to form a small pin hole with airstream going up as if you are blowing the top of your hair. Lastly take your time learning higher notes, don’t move on to the next higher to you are completely playing the note underneath 💯 then move on to the next higher note and so on. Remember air support is a must! Good luck fellow trombonist!
Upper register: 1. How long would spend working to increase per day? 2. A good warm up before hand goes without question. On warm up for high register would I warm up more on peddle tomes? Thanks!
Yeah, once again, I come back to this and see there's no answer to my question a year ago. But thank you for that. I'll continue working on with the Gliss. I'm also working on my diaphragm so I can put pressure from below and relax on the lips.
For the people in the comments wondering if this works, I've been playing for like 20-30 minutes now just following this warm up and practice and I'm already easily hitting notes I struggled with for weeks earlier. This is stuff they won't teach you until college if you're a music major, so get it early and you'll do so so much better as far as tone and range. Mouthpiece exercises absolutely help!!
My teacher always gave me first parts and i always thought my range was pretty good for a junior in a 4a hs band but then he threw a bass bone part at me and i had to write in the trigger positions cause i had hardly ever play really low notes
Depending on your playing level, it all depends on you. It also depends on your personal taste. The best advice I can give you is to go to a shop that carries different horns, such as Shires, Bach, Yamaha, etc. look around and most importantly play around on them too
Recently i got music with notes very low, much lower than i play on my trombone (Bb below the staff and whatnot). Ive started doing this to practice those low notes. Bass trombone btw, not tenor.
Ive been playing trumpet for 7 years and love playing it. I also wanna learn how to play the trombone bc I love the sound of the instrument. If you can help me out and deicing on what trombone should I start off with.
Pretty sure he already covered that elsewhere. It depends hugely on personal preference and the size of your wallet. If that's small I personally would recommend checking out the used instruments market with an open mind, looking for a quality, but not a specific, brand (and obviously in a good shape). It should be possible to find a good bargain there and that's the trombone you should start of with ;).
I am an 11 grader now, and there was this person that said when I tried to play double Fs and Gs it sounds like a balloon, so just to annoy her I played it all the time, and without realizing it I was practicing them.
kobe Brooks they actually are typically the most out of tune, adding on to what chris said, unlike other instruments like trumpet(i know they have a small kick slide) they mainly tune and its down to their embuchure but the trombone must worry about their lips and slide position
Thank you for this video, when I 1st started trombone in 6th grade, I worked all my way up to be able to play a high F. Now that I watched this, I can play all the way up to a high D!! Only that it doesn’t come out sometimes, but I can play a high C, and I’m in 7th grade!
Awesome Video :D Gonna try it out directly. I only have one more question. How importent do you think warmups are? Also keep going with this awesome work ^^
Christopher may not get around to answering this. In my humble opinion warm ups are essential before playing etudes or music. I am not up to my own capabilities if I skip warm up!
I have braces as a tenor brass player and I can comfortably hit a C5 and sometimes if I'm lucky a Eb above that. If I get my braces removed will I lose that range that I'm used to now and have to work it back or will it stay about the same?
Jack Nemec I'm not sure, I've heard from some brass players that have had used braces before and then got them removed, some say that you have to learn how to play all over again and some say it's the same
When I had my braces and got them removed (mind you, this was 6th, 7th, and 8th grade), I don't particularly remember any issues. However, the highest note I could hit back then that was somewhat comfortable was an Eb4.
I've always heard they in a way hold you back. I'm betting when you get them off you will be an even better player! Of course getting used to the different feel...
Jack Nemec I had braces from 7th to 9th grade (US grade system wise) I lost no range whatsoever when i got my braces removed. My range was up to the F above C5 and after getting braces removed I didn't notice any difference in the feel of the horn.
Ethan Keating look up Matonizz he's basically the closest thing you'll find to Christopher Bill for Euphoniums, when I was learning Euphonium as a extra along side my trombone for jazz, I watched him and his videos were extremely helpful. Good luck!
I'm a drummer, why am I even watching a trombone tutorial from three years ago?? (actually these suggestions are useful with most instruments, improvement is all about pushing the envelope little by little. Good one.)
I can pedal tone F but not any lower tho. My band class plays a pep band arrangement of Seven Nation Army and in measure 34-37 I play low, but I can't hit low Eb or D. I play first Trombone
Our low brass clinician always says "if you can play a high e, you can play a high f. If you can play a high f, you can play a high g" and we all like "bro?"
Nate he's kind of right in a way, but he did a horrible job of communicating his thought
I would agree. Once I learned got comfortable with E, I became comfortable with F. After that, G wasn't that far away. I would say whenever I had to go up partials is when I started having a harder time reaching.
He's right but that doesn't exactly mean you can control the notes
"If you can play it slow, you can play it fast."

Straight up didn’t know you could play B flat in 5th. Changed my life.
If you have a valve, you can also play the low Bb in a low 3
the more i watch the more i realize how much i suck at trombone

I'm glad I'm not the only trombonist who occasionally rests their hand on their mouthpiece.
Is that not correct form? I always do that.
Ajay Narayan I do to
Christopher: Tries to play b flat 5th pos in tune. fails. tries again gets it.
Me: Tries to play b flat 5th pos in tune. fails for the 5th time. puts trombone away for the day and starts playing guitar.
caleb rose bro I did the same thing lol
caleb rose i hate fifth Bb unless im doing triplets in fifth lol
... It makes so much sense! I can't believe I didn't realize earlier. Thank you!
I study the trombone at university, with the plan of teaching others to play eventually. I felt this video was very helpful.
THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH! i've been struggling finding what to do to expand my range, but now i know what to do!!!! THANK YOU!!

Absolutely superb!!!! just what I needed to hear today.
Thank you for the good advice my friend.

Cool concept, looking forward to trying it, I've definitely been doing it the "wrong" way and just trying to hit the high notes directly.

now see how high you can get on a contrabass trombone. He should get a piccolo trombone for his trombone covers.

FunnyGirl1111 Needs some work I guess... You will get it out just slur up to it or push more air
Nelson Moreno oh, I know. I just have really bad ombechure, I have a coach and I've been working with him, I'm actually able to hit it now xD
FunnyGirl1111 Awesome. My range is 2 octatives above that F(trying not to show off) I did the note above it once

There is a reason these videos are appealing for all ages
It would be really nice if you gave some tips on reading other types of music on trombone in weird clefs or just different instrument keys
+Spencer Lininger Sure! I'll put it on the list
Spencer Lininger If you're referring to Tenor and Alto clef, get Brad Edwards introduction to tenor and alto clef
alex wilson i mean more than tenor and alto. Those are different but they arnt to abstract. But I do have a little trouble transposing on the spot. Such as reading French horn music
Spencer Lininger you only use one clef
otherwise you will get the notes messed up

Can you do a video on why and which trombones are better and what they are better for
Because I am looking for a new trigger trombone and I wnat to know which one would be best
Depending on your playing level, it all depends on you. It also depends on your personal taste. The best advice I can give you is to go to a shop that carries different horns, such as Shires, Bach, Yamaha, etc. look around and most importantly play around on them too

Hello! I've been playing trombone for 9 years now and today I encountered your channel and I love It, Thank you 😜
Fer Sanz i've been playing for 6 years now, and its my junior year in high school
Great video.
thank you, teacher
Awesome tips!!
this really helped me
Thank you so much
Are your trombones always in tune??
+kobe Brooks My trombones are never in tune :p ya gotta use your ear to tune every note on this instrument. (We play a giant tuning slide)
the art of trombone
kobe Brooks they actually are typically the most out of tune, adding on to what chris said, unlike other instruments like trumpet(i know they have a small kick slide) they mainly tune and its down to their embuchure but the trombone must worry about their lips and slide position
This is s good way to learn alternate position not usually used in the upper register.
Christopher Bill true true, my band director told me that
Thank you for this video, when I 1st started trombone in 6th grade, I worked all my way up to be able to play a high F. Now that I watched this, I can play all the way up to a high D!! Only that it doesn’t come out sometimes, but I can play a high C, and I’m in 7th grade!
I’m currently able to play a high E (above the 5th ledger line) and I’m working on the super F. My goal is to hit a super Bb someday!
I’m a freshman in high school so I think this is pretty good
@@liamsamples Damn, I'm also a fresh man and I can barely hit G's on the 3rd leger line like 30% of the time, good job with your range.
I think a lot of people would love to see how or if you range has improved over the few years since this was posted
pretty knowledgeable video.
This is freakin great. Time to binge watch lol
Any chance you'll do a video on composing/arranging music?
Awesome Video :D Gonna try it out directly. I only have one more question. How importent do you think warmups are? Also keep going with this awesome work ^^
Christopher may not get around to answering this. In my humble opinion warm ups are essential before playing etudes or music. I am not up to my own capabilities if I skip warm up!
Very useful. Thanks
I can play from a Pedal Bb below regular Pedal Bb (trigger w/ slide as low as possible) to a high F above the “above the staff” f
I have braces as a tenor brass player and I can comfortably hit a C5 and sometimes if I'm lucky a Eb above that. If I get my braces removed will I lose that range that I'm used to now and have to work it back or will it stay about the same?
Jack Nemec I'm not sure, I've heard from some brass players that have had used braces before and then got them removed, some say that you have to learn how to play all over again and some say it's the same
VidSourceGames Makes me a bit worried now that I'm nearing the end of them.
I’m trying to increase my range on marching baritone, but I have a trombone. Could I practice this on baritone and have it help my baritone range?
Great job
holy shite this actually helped me so much bro what
Thx this helped a lot.
Are chromatics good to increase range??
How do you get that good tone my tone sounds like a delayed flash bang
*I wish there was a channel like this but for Tuba.*
Thanks you!
Question: when you get sick, does your range decrease? Or is it just my weird body
+That Wannabee Wind instruments require a healthy body! Take care of your weird body! (But what you're experiencing is very normal)

I play the French Horn but this still helps me. Trombone is cool to.
Can you do a video on arranging? I'd really appreciate it!
I can pedal tone F but not any lower tho. My band class plays a pep band arrangement of Seven Nation Army and in measure 34-37 I play low, but I can't hit low Eb or D. I play first Trombone
Do you have an f attachment?
Damn I love trombone
Amen, brother.
Anybody knows how a double A looks like in bass clef (in my language we do not know such thing).
I had an instructor who could hit a triple Bb. Dude was insane!
I can hit it but not very cleanly
