If you don't understand what happened, they recorded over Steve Vai's tape (that he spent 4 days on) cause they didn't know anything was on it. The full video goes into more detail.

I’ll take 80% of what Dylan’s recorded over pretty much anything Steve Vai’s ever done (outside of his brief stint with Zappa, but even that stuff was mainly great because of Zappa, not so much because of SV). A technical virtuoso, sure. But who cares?
@@keef7224 Who cares? The one and a half million people who bought "Passion And Warfare", for starters. And the thousands who go to his concerts on every tour. If you think "a technical virtuoso" is all that Steve Vai is, you clearly know nothing about his music. Frank Zappa, Ry Cooder, Lemmy, Alice Cooper, Ozzy, David Lee Roth, David Coverdale all specifically wanted him on their albums. Not just as a guitarist, but also as a songwriter. They clearly cared. What have you ever done that anybody cares about?
@@henrygvidonas9573 you clearly missed my point, but if you really think Vai’s legacy of recordings is anywhere near Dylan’s then I don’t know what else to say.

A slap back echo is an old school effect used for vocals, think John Lennon Instant Karma. The machine uses a loop of tape with several tape heads to give the echo effect. ( I think) So Dylan took Vai's tape and in using the echo machine wiped off a section of Vai's song for Dylan's vocal.
I don't get it. I'm sure you have your own studio but you pay a studio where your work isn't safe? I guess laughter is one way of dealing with it. So Bob Dylan scheduled studio time and is waiting to record. Nothing makes sense here.
@@jimbelanger4594 Steve didn't have a professional studio of his own when he was in Alcatrazz. Or he already had his first real pro studio, but had to rent it out to other musicians all the time, to be able to afford the costs of building and running it. I think the only Alcatrazz album Steve was on, was recorded at Cherokee Studios on Fairfax Avenue in Hollywood and/or Skyline Studios on Topanga Canyon Boulevard. But I'm not sure. It was mixed at Cherokee.
In this case, a tape recorder with separate record and playback heads is used to record audio and immediately play it back again to create the echo. The time between the recording and the playback is determined by the physical distance between the two heads and the speed of the tape. The distance is fixed, so the time is adjusted by varying the speed of the tape. And the tape isn't used as a permanent recording medium. It's considered just part of the mechanism. So you use whatever tape is available.
This is such a Bob Dylan story. I heard a story about how he once got stuck behind some bins after trying to see if a jewellery shop in London was open at midnight and he had to be rescued by a few members of the public.
I think he's just referring to the fact that Dylan used the tape at a different speed and was high-pitched when he played the tape back at the speed he used to record the guitar stuff.
The very idea of Dylan, who practically invented the home studio, sitting and waiting for studio time just cracks me up. Not to mention that he’s Bob F*#&ing Dylan! He should never have to wait for anything, let alone studio time. But then again, it’s actually kind of awesome, isn’t it?
Liked the video and I'm truly a Dylan fan. However, I play guitar but I couldn't understand anything this guy said ! Anyone welcome to explain it to me, it would be greatly appreciated.
Dylan's engineer grabbed Steve's tape off the shelf and replaced an old used-up tape loop in an analogue tape echo/delay with a part of it, thereby erasing a big part of what Steve had recorded over the last four days. Tape echos always erase whatever is already on the tape before the loop comes around after a full turn. It goes like this: Record signal with one tape head, play back with one (or several) other(s) head(s) for the echo signal(s), erase head deletes recorded signal, tape loops around, record new signal, etc. Depending on the model of tape echo, the erase head is either the last head in the chain of tape heads and the tape loops around "empty" - or it's the first head in the chain before the head that records the new signal onto the freshly erased tape. That's the type that was used in this instance. That's why Dylan's vocals were still on the tape.
It's almost certainly not Bob's fault, those tapes are almost always left unlabeled, anyone who used that studio space after could have accidentally recorded over them.
What exactly did he plagiarize? Early on he made folk music, songs like Blowing in the wind and Restless farewell both put Melody's of old traditional songs over original lyrics, that's not plagiarism that's the essence of folk music.
