- We bought this small block chevy retired race engine for four hundred bucks from an old timer who claimed it ran low 12's in his late 70's chevy camaro. Will this dirt cheap small block engine fire up in our freshly built engine run stand?

$400 and runs! Not 2 shabby.
$400.00 is a very good deal you lucky bum! I'm happy for ya!
Sounds Strong!
Hey quick cooling fan idea for your stand, You could just use a box fan on the outside and plug it into your wall... Just a thought!
Back in the day I had friends throw together motors with stuff they had laying around. Always ran strong and great until they didn't. Keep building novas best car ever.
Sure wish I didn’t miss my motorcycle ride with John Mellencamp..haha..motor sounds good..lots more to come
Put that ol girl in that Pontiac with a 5 speed 3.73 rears 11.s for sure
Engine sounds great, a steal for the money! Put a Holley 850 and electric fuel pump, you can always jet down if needed, swap out the 307 and run it! 12's here we come!!! Happy to see the parts are coming in handy. Cheers, Ray
Heck ya man. Its a good morning when i can watch Hatch's while drinking my coffee.
Appreciate the video.
Thanks man! Glad you enjoy our content!
like the stand sounds like a runner
$400 well spent! If the Ventura doesn't get a Pontiac, this is the next best thing that could've happened!
Pontiac 400 for the ventura ! But that tree fiddy sounds good!
That motor sounds sweet!!
I'm new here but very excited to watch more.
I got one just like it, wish I could attach a photo. Mine has ported 882 heads. 405hp you'll love it.
Put that engine into the Ventura. Keep the Pontiac name alive!
I love it , that rascal be in the Ventura in a Heart beat . Your stand has inspired me to take the front clip of a 67 Chevy 2 and make me a run stand
She sounds rowdy! Love it! :)
First start-up on a new to you engine is always epic. Very cool!!!!!! 😎😎😎😎👍👍👍👍👌👌👌👌
Next time your at the wrecker grab an electric fan from a ford Taurus. Cheap and they flow a ton of air. Comes complete with shroud. Fits a gm rad perfectly. Keeps my twin turbo ls cool. You’ll need a high amp relay for it as they draw a lot of power.
I have an 84 z28 that this engine would be perfect for!
This engine came out of a 78-9 z28.
Absolutely worth it. 👌 Sounds like a very healthy engine in general, got a nice lumpy sounding cam. Be interesting to know what kind of cam, and the specs. I'd be really curious at this point about what else is inside the engine, bored, oversized pistons, figure out if the block has been decked, are the heads stock, have they been ported, etc. For the first start, it sounds like you have a good engine. If I were planning on using it in a street car, I'd probably be looking into a good dual plane intake. Plenty of time for that. For now I'd be very pleased. 👍😊
Good deal. If you have a bore scope, stuff it in a spark plug hole to see if it has dome pistons to get the squeeze up on those smog heads. If you don't have one of those do a compression test on it to see what kind of cylinder pressure you're dealing with.
A 307 crank in a 350 block with a standard bore makes it a 327. Then you can use the 350 crank in the 307 block and make it a 328 with a standard bore.
Would be a very cool test to see what is better, a shorter stroke with long rods and a bigger bore or a longer stroke, smaller bore with shorter rods both setup with the same heads, cam and compression ratio.🤔 This bench racing question has been debated for centuries and still no solid
winner.🤷😎👍
I think you should bring it to the No Name Nationals 2024 in Sikeston Missouri in September! 😁
Sounded pretty good for iron heads!!
Ooo i see you have a ventura. I bought a 71 ventura from a junk yard. Still working on it
Heck yeah!!!!!
She’s a runner!! Lol
Sounds good. try to get a dual plane intake, for better low RPM. Best of luck.
You guys need to put mufflers on that stand so you will be able to hear what the engine is doing because you can't hear anything with straight manifolds on there and the red lead wire to the battery looks like it will be cooked if left where it's at because the heat and flames out of the manifolds will cook the plastic right off and then you will have a live ground wire to that frame and it will not be good.
definitely worth it and then some !!! even with those crappy heads ..its a heirloom motor designed to be rebuilt repeatedly.. im willing to bet its like a crane fireball 2 cam 454/454 lift nothing insane but fine for stock heads. if you put a dual plane intake on it you would see a different motor all together.
Another great video! Get some old volvo cooling fans they are 2 speed and 4000 cfm. Get one on every car. I spent $20 on mine 8 years ago. It has never beenon high. Just a good old street sign for a shroud!
Very nice motor great find!
The heads are the worst. It's got a 305 dampener too so good luck to ya. Hey if it runs ok just play with it till it blows.
I know those 76 cc heads are a real bummer. I don’t know why anyone would throw money at the motor with those heads but here we are. I still think this motor would be a fun little street car engine who knows maybe it could touch 12’s. I guess we won’t know till we know.
@@hatchsrecreationalengineer1997 itll be great fun . Until it isn't.
You can pick up some aluminum heads fairly cheap. Just don’t feed the kids for a week. 😂 Buy a balancer from Summit. I would agree it needs a 750 cfm Holley if you plan to drag race with it.
cool motor brother it is indeed spicy, going to terrorize no doubt!!
A running s/b for 400 is a great great deal. Whether it ran mid 12's, I'm of no comment. It was a great buy for $400.
The choke was on the whole time you was running it, so with a torque converter on it in the car it might sound a little different.
400 bucks for a running 350 SBC is a good deal and it has roller rockers and aftermarket pan is the kicker put a good set of aluminum heads on that thing wit smaller CC and higher lift cam and that thing will be a good engine. Do you have a borescope camera to stick in the plug holes to see what kind of pistons it has if they are 30 over or flat top pistons.
Better put that in your race car see what it does
Nice
Rip off the heads and get some knock off aluminum heads. I would also want to know about pistons and crank. Is it bored and stroked?
Score!
Pick up some vortec heads for this and a 750cfm carb. Cheap horsepower increase!
Sounds like a stock OEM cam shaft and with those heads I doubt seriously 12s. But. it is still worth what you paid.
305 harmonic balancer?
👍🏽😎🏁🏁🏁
What happened to your car's are you still working on them
Full send it bro!
Put it in the nova with the 6 cyl!
Keep up the content!
Small hyd cam stock compression ??? Take the chain cover off and see what cam #s are stamped on the end of it !! A mild small block mostly factory parts !! Has potential of 12s in a lighter car with 4.10 gears 350 turbo and a 10" converter with 1 5/8 " headers with 26"× 8.5" slicks !
@dennisburger1220 sounds like you walked into an unusually good buy !!! What he has won't run 11 anything just not enough motor and you need a lighter car !! So what's your story ??? I would love to hear it !!!!
@dennisburger1220 so you did the machine work yourself ??? That would obviously save a ton of $$$ !! MSD ??? Rpm range of the intake and cam ??? Why not single plain ??? 1 5/8" headers or bigger ??? Sorry I'm a stickler for details and combinations !! Edelbrock makes the performer and the RPM Performer ! Which one ??? Rear gears ??? Turbo 350 trans ??? Traction bars and slicks ??? I'm not into the big cubic inch nitrous cars I like the backyard car that starts from scratch !!!! Much more exciting to me !!!!! Thank you !!! I will find that video !!! My days are over for bracket racing I'm 61 and not physically or financially able to it anymore !!! Life goes on !!
@dennisburger1220 Any idea on compression ??? Sometimes it's a pain in the butt to figure it all out !! Approximately ! Also how good are the heads ??? Did you give them a little stretch and massage ??? Roll bar or cage is frame connected ??? Definitely more motor then that $400 motor !!!! I ran track only wanted to stay out of trouble !! Too much temptation on the street when younger !!!
@dennisburger1220 the one thing that will be tough to get around is the cfm airflow of those heads !!! I just think a single plain like a team G power Ram would definitely wake it up and flow better air and still be primarily streetable !!!! That is a pretty big cam for being on the street !!! I can see why the big stall converter is needed also big for the street !!!! Your on that edge of impractical !! Not pump gas is it ???
@dennisburger1220 I'm probably way off on asking this but what a difference this makes !!! Traditional motor mounts or motor and mid plates ??? Provides room for headers and strengthens frame and transfers torque evenly !!!! Also NOT expensive just a lot of time measuring and trimming plus aviation bolts and weld in carefully placed tabs !!! Eventually enough runs will take a toll on the bell housing and start to crack it and split it right into the casing !!! Just some friendly FYI !!
Those are NOT roller rockers they are stamped roller tips which really does nothing to improve anything !!! A true roller pivets at the stud NOT the valve tip of the spring !!! No cam specs ??? Looks like a dual plain intake which is made for efficiency more then power and usually is only good for maybe 6 grand !!! Anxious Torres know MORE !!! Hopefully this buy was worth it !!!! I guess you can't go wrong for $400 !! I guess you can say you rolled the dice !!! 12s are possible but then how heavy was the vehicle used ??? A Vega is a far cry from a Chevelle if you get my drift !! Ahh !!!!!!!!
Yes your are correct they are roller tip rockers I should have made that clear. I do not have cam specs because we never took the engine apart at all to look. We bought it threw it in the cart and fired it off. It is not a dual plane it has a single plane torquer ii manifold on it. For $400 I feel like any sbc is a good deal as a runner. The vehicle it was used in was a late 70’s Camaro. The weight should be rather similar to some of our cars. I feel like 12’s were possible out of this thing and like I said the guy who was running it shelved it because he wanted to go faster. I guess we will see what we are gonna do with it. At least we know now she’s a runner
@@hatchsrecreationalengineer1997 One thing I learned is it's about the combination and comparability not how big it is !!! 350s have such longevity and so many ways to go with them without spending a ton of money !!! It's always tougher to do more for less and a much greater challenge !!!! A holley blue pump would probably work best with that !! Maybe even a half inch line !!! I have always been a stickler for details !!! The smaller stuff always seems to be more fun getting the most out of it !!! A 5941734 single intake !!! Haven't seen one of them in years !!! I so much love the old stuff being I'm 61 years old but never forgot it !!! I do miss being in the garages talking shop !!! Cherish your time with these things time goes by too fast and then it's gone !!!!
@@hatchsrecreationalengineer1997 I’ve seen people try to sell the core for $400. So $400 for a running 350 is an absolutely ridiculous deal. What was the casting number of the block? An 010?
